Ten for Ten: Rasmussen's New Numbers Show Republicans Ahead on All Ten "Trust More" Issues

Some big shifts here in the GOP's favor.

CNN has a poll out (no link yet; email sent to me by CNN). It finds Obama's approval rate at 55%. Um, whatever.

It also finds that on the issues that matter most to voters (they decide themselves what they are), 48% feel that Obama agrees with them. While 51% feel Obama disagrees with them.

Again, on the issues that matter most to them, personally.

And yet his approval is at 55%. Go figure.

For the sake of comparison: In April, CNN's poll found Obama's support at 63%. 57% of voters then said Obama agreed with them on the issues that matter most to them.

So, he seems to consistently get a 6-7% goose in job approval above the agree on the issues number, which I can only guess must be from his awesome level of competence and ability to successfully turn this recession around.

Harris Poll: It was reported over the weekend the Harris Interactive poll put Obama at 45%.

They're now releasing his approval on the top twelve issues -- not a single one where he commands majority approval.

1 It feels kinda like cherry picking polls you like and scoffing at those you don't.

But of course, Obama is slipping and that's why he's so desperate to shut up outlets that are willing to be critical of his bullshit.

On the other hand, a lot of people will reelect hiim because he's a celebrity and all the stuff that he does wrong is 'stuff all politicians do'.  That general dumbness pervades, and celebrity is a trump card for a lot of idiots.  Obama will be reelected.  He'll lose the house, but the GOP has nobody who can challenge him.  Huck, Romney, Palin... nope, nope, nope.  Really sucks for the USA.

4 Sorry for hijacking the thread, but The Antisemitic Conspiracy Newsletter The Atlantic is at it again. Ambinder innocently asks "What did the moon scientist tell the Israelis", and then goes on an about conspiracy BS.

While, of course, the scientist didn't give anything to the Israelis, nor did the Israelis have been suspect at any time of the investigation. He was cought in FBI sting, nothing to do with Israel.

If Ambinder asked WHETHER there was information given, it could be somewhat excusable, but he aske WHAT was given, which is an elaborate method of saying "Of course they have, silly". And facts are not needed to confirm Mark's suspicion of the Jew. The Jew is always guilty, any kind of doubt is for gullible fools.

Oh, and he changed the headline after some lashing out in comments. But it's still in the http address.

To be completely racist about it, I think the non-Democrat part of that 55% says they approve because they don't want to be called racists for not rooting for the black guy.  Kind of a Donavan McNabb thing.

Gallup back down to 50, Ras back down to 47.  Other than WaPo/ABC who flat out lied and said a majority agree with Obama on healthcare when their own numbers say otherwise in the poll that they did, there isn't a more positive poll for Obama.  This is about the best it gets for him.

Ace could have painted a much bleaker picture if he wanted to.

8 Looking into the future I can't see a single item on Barry's agenda that will help him in the polls.

Card check? Cap and Tax? More bailouts? Fairness Doctrine? VAT? More Taxes?

Obamacare is his most popular item and it's a stinker. He will only go down from here.

O/T, but something to make you all smile (from Hotair):

Roman Polanski’s three decades as a fugitive are coming back to haunt him.

Noting his previous escape from U.S. authorities, Switzerland’s top criminal court on Tuesday rejected Polanski’s appeal to be released from prison because of the “high” risk that the 76-year-old director would try to flee again.

Polanski’s offers of bail, house arrest and electronic monitoring failed to sway the tribunal. Even a Swiss chalet in the luxury resort of Gstaad was brushed aside as insufficient collateral to guard against Polanski fleeing the country, as the United States seeks to have him extradited for having sex with a 13-year-old girl in 1977.

“The appellant has already once in 1978 eluded American criminal proceedings by traveling to Europe,” the Federal Criminal Court said in its 17-page verdict, adding that Polanski’s transfer to the U.S. could also cause family trauma and cost investors millions of dollars in losses.

“As a result, the motivation to flee is high,” it said.

24 Checking the numbers, the biggest GOP gain has been in the issue of national security, with 11% gain in just a month.

That's not surprising, given Obama's public dithering on Afghanistan.

The public gave "hope and change" and chance, and saw that it stinks.

Oddly enough, tied for second in gain is EDUCATION, for a 10% gain.   That one is odd.   Its not only odd that the Republicans lead here (IMO, they should, but I think that's counter to historical public perception), but just how much they have gained so quickly.

Sorry, to be O/T again, but I should have read further down the article.  Poor Roman's incarceration may cause him to go bankrupt because he can't finish his latest film and the investors will lose $40 million.  And then there's this gem from Captain Ed:

Interestingly, the US has not yet submitted a formal extradition request to Switzerland after Polanski’s arrest.  The Obama administration has until November 25th to do so, or the Swiss will be forced to release Polanski.   Over the next five weeks, we will see if the White House is more interested in appeasing its Hollywood backers or enforcing the law.

Gee, I'm going with appeasing Hollywood for Double Jeopardy, Alex.  Plus, the O's administration isn't so good with deadlines.

Never knew that ethics was a Dem stronghold (seriously speaking).

Abortion is curious.  The tides have shifted back to pro-life with a narrow majority generically being *against* abortion now.

Its probably in part due to the mass advent of ultrasound screening, which shows in utero baby-like behaviors in relatively young fetuses.  The ready availability of cheap contraception probably has helped shift attitudes here a bit as well.

Posted by: Goose that Laid the Golden Gong at October 20, 2009 02:15 PM (tXSD8)

31 I think the variance is simply due to pollsters having no idea how many republicans there are.  I don't think many people want to be republicans right now... they have managed to alienate Palin fans, moderates, democrats.  Obama is a total slimeball, but where are we supposed to go?

If a pollster called you up today and asked if you were a Republican, would you say yes?  Why?

The GOP needs leadership right now.  We need to get it together and unite under some simple core principles, one of which is to stop all new programs until the mess is cleaned up (which will take many years).  Some real reforms to corruption, some balanced budget laws, some core basic promises to leave controversial social issues, police issues, etc to the states.  We need to confine the message such that the GOP can get a clean clear message out.

Instead, a million roaches in the GOP are scattering to get a little bit of power back, here and there, and there's no clear indication that the GOP would fix anything if they got power back.  All we have is a promise not to actively fuck it up like the democrat have.  But many democrats want this fuckup to occur.  You can't beat them with this squishy crap.  But we all can unite under a few simply principles.  Ron Paul fans, Mccain fans, Rush fans, Palin fans, and perhaps one or two idiots who like Huckabee can all come together and agree that the federal government cannot and should not be involved in several aspects of our lives, and needs to be reduced in size and scope.  If we could constrain the national party to that message, we would be unstoppable.  Of course, the corrupt in national politics would lose their ability to be corrupt, too.  So I guess this is ridiculous.

Mark my words as Obama wins reelection: this was why.

36 GALLUP AT 50%...AGAIN...

Gallup has Obama at 50% Approval yet again.  They have done this I think 4 times now and each time it sits at 50% for 3 or 4 days, then suddenly rebounds back 5 or 6 points for no apparent reason.

You know that Obama is really in trouble when his support falls below 50% on Gallup, which polls adults and not likely voters (which favors Obama).

For some reason, Gallup remains THE POLLSTER OF RECORD for the MSM despite the fact that Gallup ranked 17th in 2008.  Rasmussen, whom the MSM dismisses as a partisan REPUBLICAN POLLSTER, ranked #1 in 2008.

When was the last time you heard any MSM outlet quoting Rasmussen?

No. . .because I don't talk to pollsters.

But in general, I have no problem telling people I am a Republican.   I'm registered as one, and generally vote that way.

A lot of the problem you describe is intrinsic to politics in general.  Politicians as a group tend to comprise self-selected power seekers.  Getting elected is difficult, time-consuming, and expensive, and the ones who do it usually want to stay in office.  Consequently, their adherence to principle is weak.

You have to understand how CBS defines a "Democrat" a "Republican" and an "Independent". An indepdent is someone who votes democratic, sometimes contributes to democrats, but will, on occassion, vote for a non-Democrat. You know, for like dog catcher or something.  A Democrat is all of the above, but also votes in the primary. And a Republican is either a racist or David Brooks.

90 Here's the thing.

If a poller asked me if I approved of the job Obama was doing, I would have to say - wholeheartedly - yes. Yes, I do.

I absolutely approve of a Democratic president who holds a filibuster-proof majority performing so ineptly, incompetently, and stupidly as to squander the single most powerful single party government that this country has seen in decades.

I completely approve of Obama's near-complete failure to accomplish any of the numerous radical items on his agenda.

I completely approve of Obama doing something none thought possible - making the GOP look competent, bold, and ideologically sound by comparison.

I completely approve of Obama's strong push for Congress to approve things like an end to Don't Ask Don't Tell, thus putting countless congressmen in his own party in far greater peril of losing their seats on a wedge issue.

What do I think of how Obama's handled himself? I'd say he's doing just fine by me...

In my opinion (which, by expressing, means that AoSHQ is no longer a legitimate news souce, sorry guys...), I chalk that 6-7% "goose" in approval over agreement to good old-fashioned white guilt.

For example, you could poll my mother-in-law.  She and Obama would be opposed on pretty much any actual issue, with the exception possibly of that meany-mean-meany Rush Limbaugh.  Yet, she would still give Obama a tic in the "approval" column, because she voted for him, and needs for him to succeed wildly in order to avenge her own personal demons from the 1950's.

Posted by: reason at October 20, 2009 04:03 PM (+hPIb)

112 #109 she needs to get into more mainstream public appearances to build up her credibility again.  Oprah's show gives Palin access to the demographic she needs to improve her numbers with.  Palin needs to get out there over and over again to show that she is likable and smart to that demographic if she has any national ambitions at all.  Oprah is an idiot, but might as well turn her into a useful one for the Right.

Posted by: Sort-of-Mad Max at October 20, 2009 04:18 PM (ERJIu)

125 Two of psychological factors that contribute to Obama having higher overall approval numbers than his approval on "agrees with me" or on any/all of his policies:

1) People who voted for him and people who voted for McCain but weren't disappointed that Obama won (the latter including people who told themselves, "well, at least the USA elected its first Black President, so that's a good thing, right?") are reluctant to admit to themselves that they were wrong about Obama.  That's a natural defensive reaction.

2) People who want to believe that the President of the United States, whoever he or she may be, is a strong leader who will solve all of our problems are reluctant to see the President as weak.  They don't want to admit to themselves that they and the country are soooooo screwed with Obama in charge.

141 I think Palin should definitely show up on as many live interviews as she can.  I bet she's much better rested and prepped now, and will surely look a lot better than the Couric hatchet job.  When people ask her why she's better now than she was then, she can say 'it's hard to distort a live interview'.  Even if this is not the whole story, it's compelling.

A lot of people on the right bash Palin... I get the problems with her, but when you bash her so much... who is the alternative?  The GOP is sorely lacking good alternatives.  Romney is simply ridiculous in comparison.  Huck, Fred, Rudy, Jindal, Pawlenty?  None of them are really all that super awesome.  I wish we had the kind of bench that we could laugh away Palin, but we don't.

Deanna Frankowski, the Beck fan mentioned in your article, is "sick and tired of being ignored"? Give me a break! I had to wait through eight years of an Administration that brought this country to the brink. Frankowski should sit down quietly while the rest of us get to the task of cleaning up Bush's mess. Besides, this health-care debate isn't about those over 30; it's about the millions of uninsured, recently graduated young people saddled with loans we can't imagine paying off, who are sick and tired of living in an abyss created by our elders' stupidity. Obama would be smart to focus on college towns. Step aside, Grandma. We want health care, and we want it now.

Likely Voters Today: 47%

Adults (bias polling at Gallup) Today: 50%

that averages to for Today to: 48.5%

in other words, Republicans can't stand the guy, Democrats love the guy, moderates are worried, and independents feel like they may regret their vote which makes him a slightly unpopular guy

Bush's averages during this time were at about 80%, to be fair this was post 9/11

Bush was President for 8 years, there's a reason he was re-elected. The guy was not a failure, was he the best? hell no, one of the worst? fuck no! I personally grade him a B- President. I have Obama currently at D+ though and falling. I'd also point out Bush was a popular President for 5 of his 8 years and a popular "man" all 8 years even when he had low approval ratings. Obama got unpopular before a year passed and his favorables have fallen 20+ points w/ in a year.

Let them count on the young vote and try and ignore seniors (remember 2004 when seniors ended up going to dubya b/c of some of his moderate policies, i'd trust seniors to vote over young people. Even my young McCain supporting friends didn't vote b/c of the laziness from the young vote)

They thought they were getting a moderate candidate that believed in low taxes, small government, fighting and winning the war quickly in Iraq and someone who could bring both sides together to incrementally improve government like they thought Clinton did (with the Rep Congress) just like the media portrayed him.

Sure those of us morons that did research, new this was coming, but the voters get one more chance before I write them off.  If they take the media at their word a second time, then there is no hope.

um, Glenn is not someone i endorse people to listen too much to when it comes to campaign strategy. The guy put Theodore Roosevelt in a "bastards list" that included guys like Hitler and Stalin. he's way too far to the right to tell us how to win. point is we need the moderates to win and getting pissed at any moderate stance is not helping us. 204 #197 LOL:  Yeah, yeah.

Just remember that 2012 will be a firestorm.  Opposing Obama will be RACIST bigger than ever.  Half the country will be supporting Obama  (yes, half), and half will be as energized as never before to boot him out.  State media has never been mobilized in an American Presidential campaign (ok, maybe somewhat last time...)

You think McCain was short of $ last time?  You can love Palin all you like (consistent with her being married...), but in exchange for some dullness, with Romney, you get someone who has a chance to deal with what will be a firestorm.

Besides, I really love HH's movie hour on Friday's.

Posted by: YRM at October 20, 2009 07:22 PM (xNw7B)

207 Miss'80sBaby, sure, deciding now may be somewhat speculative, but it's less so because an incumbent President narrows the field of potential challengers (because the cards are stacked in favor of the incumbent).

210 Regarding the Palin/Oprah interview:

Oprah needs to be very careful.  She lost a lot of her viewers with her support of Obama.  If she attacks Palin she will be the loser.

Palin needs to do what Rumsfeld did: He made sure that every interview was also taped by the Pentagon;  then he put it up on the DOD web site.

Palin should do the same.  She could post it on her own site.  That would prevent creative editing.

Posted by: Miss Marple at October 20, 2009 07:34 PM (UQado)

211 Methos, I understand your point, and no, I'm not sure if anyone has done VP twice, but I really think Palin is sui generis due to her resume,  The Alaska (tertiary state) + just one term + resignation stuff is an issue.  Does it cease being an issue in the VP slot? No, but it becomes less important.  I don't think enough people will vote for Palin for President in 2012--I just don't.  One needs to come to grips with that.

So the next question is, well, what could she run for that people will vote for her?  She isn't going to become Governor of another state;  and she isn't going to run again in Alaska.  So what remains?  VP remains.  And this is the reality no matter how many Sarah! comments you see on the non-Leftie blogs.  At VP she can get the perception of credibility she needs.  VP is still her most plausible way.

215 Carter is in the Single "A" leagues compared to Obama.  While a recaptured, solidly conservative congress could significantly neutralize Obama domestically, what about foreign policy?  Maybe Romney is no more than a sacrifice, i.e., he can't win, but who instead?  When was the last time a dark horse emerged to successfully challenge an incumbent President?  Lets be real here...

216 John Calhoun and Adlai Stevenson I comes to mind, but i can't think of one who had a run at the Presidency after multiple VP tickets

That's kind of my point.  It's not a selling point if there's no reason to believe it has a shot of working.  I don't mean to say Palin has to be the nominee or I'll vote for Obama, just that having her along as a show pony really doesn't work for me.

I'm just never going to trust Romney, unless he gets elected to something and behaves like a conservative when it counts.  I suppose Obama's Messiah complex should negate the concerns social cons have about the Mormon thing, but I have to admit I'm still kind of sketchy about it.  In any case I think Huckabee's the most electable name in the mix, by virtue of personality, though that is less than exciting to folks around here.

I volunteered time and money to the McCain campaign mainly to have her in the White House, so I do get your argument.  I just can't see doing it again for any of the names current;y out there.  I doubt they'd have her on the ticket, given the way she outshone McCain.

PP, I don't understand your question.  I meant that a) I intend to vote for her in 2012, for President, absent some compelling reason (like if she doesn't run after all, or if Ronald Reagan comes back from the dead early) and b) I don't think any of the other people who currently might run would take the chance of being diminished by standing next to her.  I don't see any of them taking the hit to their egos that counting the crowds before and after signing her up would present.

And I don't get your second point at all.  Why would she run as VP to be assigned as a Secretary?  I can see the appointment from any of the crowd in discussion, but I think there are laws against making those kinds of plans before an election which our side still follows.

Posted by: Methos at October 20, 2009 10:28 PM (mEJRc)

229 Methos, if you're still "here,"  I get it that you're going to vote for Palin in the primaries if she runs (I don't think she will, but...).  What I was asking/saying was: very few people who would vote for Palin for P will not vote for Romney for P if Romney were to make her his VP.  Or, rhetorically, as I said, what, you're not going to vote for Romney for President because Palin only got the VP slot?

Re the Secretary of Energy thing, my point was that traditionally, the VP did not much; more recently, that's changed.  Palin's biggest area of expertise is energy policy, so it would make sense for her to head the Dept. of Energy, and promote DRILL BABY DRILL.  The point is to build on what your existing resume; that's how Palin goes from being suspect to being perceived as President-ready.  I'm not saying that Energy is all she should do, but that's the natural place to start.

Oh, I hear the Yankees are winning--here's one NY'er who, as a REAL Mets fan, is only happy when the Yankees lose!

Posted by: Mitt Romney at October 20, 2009 10:47 PM (NPtVh)

230 Oh, and also:

--Yes, unlike Czars, cabinet positions need Senate approval, but that doesn't stop a P candidate from discussing things and making good faith promises.  The Presidential candidate who goes after Obama would, actually, be wise to do that beyond Palin: assemble a tenative team of sane, experienced people during the campaign (say, Rudy for HS, etc.), to stress the urgency of undoing Obama asap.

--Re "diminished status" next to Palin, well, ya know, getting to be President would seem to be sufficient for most people's ego.  Also, creating a great team is precisely the kind of thing that would feel good to someone who isn't a narcissist-egomaniac like Obama.

232 You're probably right that Palin primary voters who vote in the general would vote for Romney if she was on the ticket.  I thought you were suggesting he or one of the others promise to make her the VP pick again in order to get primary votes.  I'm not really interested in being pandered to by an east coast liberal.  My problems with Romney aren't solved by putting her on the ticket.  And I don't know any Palin fans who are going to hit the campaign trail and donate just so she can be second fiddle on another ticket we don't have much confidence in.

And I wasn't talking about Senate approval.  There was some wrinkle over Obama allegedly promising to make Hillary SoS in return for a clean convention that wasn't totally on the legal up and up.  But it's pretty far down the list of his misdeeds and I doubt anyone cares any more.

Posted by: Methos at October 21, 2009 12:13 AM (mEJRc)

233 Methos, you call Romney a liberal, but I fail to see how you can be so sure he is.  He is capitalism/market-oriented; conservative on foreign policy; and "not liberal" on social issues.  Yes, he was Governor of MA, and yes he signed onto some version of non-public option heathcare; maybe this last item takes him out of uber-conservative; is that your dealbreaker?  It's not mine.

Romney strikes me as more conservative than President Bush; certainly more so than McCain.  Are you even sure he is less conservative than Palin?  Based on what?  Palin's issue for me is experience, not orientation, but what do you base love of Palin upon?  How much of that love is really your perception of an ink blot?

234

Morons/Moronettes,

Romney/Palin is by far the best ticket we could come up with in 2012. Lots of people vote for the handsomest/prettiest candidate, Romney is a bona fide incredible businessman, Palin could be given the energy portfolio, and they could tell both the country and the world we're going to drill ourselves out of the debt and current account balance holes.

If Sarah will accept being VP and Romney lets his real Conservative out (he's a devout Mormon--not like Dingy Harry--bet on it, in his heart he's Conservative), we've got a chance to give the Dems a nut-stomping that will have most of them leaving the country.

First things first, however. We've got to get our open primaries closed. Now. We can't let our enemies pick our candidate for us like they did last time. Second thing: dump Michael Steele yesterday. That worthless fool couldn't politic his way out of a paper bag, and outreach to blacks is just stupid policy. The vast majority will vote for Bama anyway, and most wouldn't vote for a Republican if their life literally depended on it. Forget them. Concentrate on bringing the people who desperately want to see the economy pick up and the dollar strengthen back to the GOP, and we'll see Bama off to well-deserved oblivion in 2012.
