Lord Christopher Monckton on Copenhagen Conference

The one that Gordon Brown was referring to by saying we have "50 days to save the world from irreversible global warming."

The accord to be born at Copenhagen -- to feature binding emissions-reductions
targets, adaptation measures and their funding -- is due to replace the Kyoto Protocol, which runs out in 2012. Several meetings have tried to prepare a negotiation text for Copenhagen, but Brown admitted that a lot of work still needs to be done.

Monckton spoke about the proposed treaty at a speech in St. Paul last week, and gave some insights into just how awful this stupid thing will be. LauraW tipped me to the video over the weekend:

"So at last, the communists who piled out of the Berlin Wall and into the environmental movement and took over Greenpeace so that my friends who founded it left within a year, because they'd captured it, now the apotheosis is at hand. They are about to impose a communist world government on the world. You have a president who has very strong sympathies with that point of view, he's going to sign. He'll sign anything - he has a Nobel Peace prize of course he'll sign."

Yep.

II. What the Deal Looks Like

The Treaty is based on the premise that all peoples, nations and cultures have the right

to survive, to develop sustainably and to alleviate poverty.

The final agreement must balance the need for short-term action with medium and

There must be no trade off between ambition and equity

Historical Responsibility

All countries must contribute to preventing dangerous climate change. However, the

largest share of responsibility for staying within the carbon budget rests with the

industrialized countries, obligating them to reduce emissions at home whilst enabling

and supporting developing countries to develop in a low-carbon manner

One of the funniest pieces on global warming I ever read was P.J. O'Rourke, in All The Trouble In The World. He was at an environmental conference in RIO (where Al Gore was before Al Gore was vice-president).

The highlight was O'Rourke looking at a demonstration of a solar power hot dog cooker. The most charitable comment given by someone who actually tried the hot dog "wow, the hot dog is almost warm."

That is where we are headed to. Solar power hot dog cookers, reduced standard of living and Al Gore gets to keep his private jet. Because he is important.

TRINGENT COMPLIANCE FOR DUAL COMMITMENTS

All industrialized countries must act immediately and ambitiously. Compliance

should not only be assessed at the end of the commitment period. Early warning

triggers should be put in place to flag when a country is behind in meeting its

uhh, i guess i could get lucky and die sometime soon, i just hope he fails on healthcare and becomes a lame duck one year in. However i don't think that will happen even if he fails on healthcare. He will move to an issue he knows he can win in the senate and congress, and that is immigration. There are a whole bunch of republicans chomping at the bit to legalize another 20 million people. Mccain comes to mind. So he'll get that legislative victory and it will give him a little more political capital to try some other things he want.

However when it comes to this Treaty, it will never make it through the senate or the house. It would be political suicide for everyone. Only the farthest fringe of the left wants to be responsible for ceding out sovereignty. They would go down in history like the French Parliament in 1940 who voted their democracy out of existance.

i know this may get me banned, flogged or shunned here, but i kind of like Eg Begley Junior. I mean i don't agree with him, but he is probably the only environmentalists who lives the life he preaches. Also when trying to get people to go green, he doesn't do it in a demanding and condecending fashion, instead he appeals to the green most of us care about, money. He understands that everyone can't or won't want to live like him, but he does at least try to sell ideas that are reasonable, money saving, and not crazy like using a pine cone to wipe yourself.

I think he was on Red Eye this weekend. If people like him were the face of the green movement they would probably be a lot more popular than they are with most americans today.

The amazing stupidity of it all is that liberals never learn from history. The history of mankind is replete with examples of where, with unfettered capitalism, mankind has made shifts from one good to another.

Take whale oil. If today's modern liberal was in power in the early 1800, when whale oil became scarce, we would of had a treaty regulating the hunting of whales, strict whale oil credits and 1/2 of America would have been told to sit in the dark. We didn't. Instead, industrious people developed alternatives to Whale Oil and, problem solved.

Lets assume for 1 minute that Global Warming is real. So, what are your options.

1) Do a big, complex treaty where 2 or 3 of your larger polluters are guaranteed to cheat (China, India), which, in the end, is aimed at reducing your use of energy which, by implication, results in a reduction of your productivity (no energy = no production).

2) Encourage the private sector to develop an alternative to fossil fuels. Allowing you to open an entire new market and, consequently, allow you first crack at dominating a new market.

Really, it isn't that hard.

IF he's a one-termer.  You have to take into consideration the stupidity of the human mind and shortness of their memories.  After all, he does make such pretty speaches.

i agree. i think it is very likely he will win a second term. For one thing americans have a shorter attention span than they used to and two term presidents are becoming quite common. Actually all of our presidents except for 1 since 1980 have been two term presidents. It is hard to make a convinving argument that the incumbant doesn't deserve to be re-elected in a 10 second sound bite.  Also keep in mind the advantage Obama had in the media in 2008. Now multilple that by 1000, because the media can't let him be seen as a failed one term president, and also Obama has the taxpayer to fund his 2012 campaign. The man is in never ending campaign mode and he won last year, just imagine what he is going to be like in 2011. We will be having presidential addresses on tv monthly if not weekly. he will be taking airforce one, paid for by us, to every battle ground state.

also if Republicans win a majority in either the house or senate, he will have the scape gloat to blame economic problems on the republicans as well as the democrats, one of those "everyone is responsible for this" things. Actually the more i think about it the more convinced i am that him winning in 2012 is all but inevitable. I don't think our unemployment rate will be 10 percent in 3 years.

56 billion US$ per year for adaptation activities

25;

plus 7 billion US$ per year for a multilateral insurance mechanism26;

42 billion US$ per year for REDD27; and

55 billion US$ for mitigation and technology per year.28

We expect a higher number will be needed over time post-2017, in particular for

energy mitigation and technology. In case of adaptation the number would greatly

increase if emissions are not cut fast and far enough.

In addition to these resources, industrialized countries should contribute to the

their commitments to the MRV support obligation and a contribution to the

Technology Development Objective in terms of to at least double the current spending

Predicting whether someone will be a 1 or 2 term president 10 months into the first year is, at best, a hazards occupation.

Hell, predicting the winner of an election 10 months before an election is just as hazardous.

I know, i am just pointing out the distinct advantages Obama will have over his opponent, aside from the events or economic situation in 2012.

1. He will have limitless funds, private and government. Think of all the foreign money that will be coming in, hell if i were Russia, china or Iran I would take my country into debt to help fund his re-election because it would pay off.

2. Unlimited access to the airwaves, tv and radio. Prime time billings whenever he wants. Remember when he bought that 1 hour infomercial before the election, this time he doesn't have to buy it, the networks will be competing to do it for him.

3 He will in all likelihood have legalized 10-12 million people, and probably 70 percent of them will vote, or be registered democrat and will "vote" even if they don't show up. Plus they will be in states where Republicans formerly had a chance like Arizona, New Mexico, and potentially make Texas a swing state.

4. He can count on the black population to turn out in numbers and 95 percent of them to vote for him.

5. He has the media, not only singing his praises, but willing to attack  and marginalize his enemies. I mean the election was a year ago and they are still ragging on Palin ensure she has no chance(and succeeding by the looks of GOP polling on potential candidates).

6. We still have open primaries in key states like New Hampshire which gave us that turd sandwich john mccain.

we could go on. again there could be a major event or events that causes him to lose but as of right now the deck is stacked in his favor

IMO, one of the biggest notions the public is finally getting savvy to is that one party control is generally a bad thing.  Eventually, it brings out the worst aspects of wichever one is in control.  In the case of the most recent Republican domination it took a few years, with the Pelosi congress it only took a few days after Obama ascended.

That;s missing the point, Ben.  Today's "environmentalists" fall into three categories; True believers, who comprise about 5%, the same as they did in the sixties.  Fools, who just want to "make a difference", comprising students yearning for a cause to rally around, and other good-hearted but woefully ingorant folks, totalling another 90%.  Lastly, the string pullers, former and current communist party members, true redistributionists who are not fooling themselves but fooling others, and those wanna be elites like Al
Gore positioning themselves to be Gods in the new world order, ruling over the new global proletariat, and CEO's of companies like GE that hope to profit to the extent that the alligator eats them last.

That sums up todays environmentalist movement, which only comprises 15% of the population (okay, I'm pulling these stats out of my ass, they're just educated guesses, but who doesn't do that?)   The point is, the movement wields undo influence compared to their numbers.

Long story short, the "face" of the environmental movement, regardless of who it is,  needs to be punched with brass knuckles.

170 I wouldn't rule out Obama's second term.  Republicans so far haven't said much to distinguish themselves as anything other than liberal-lite, and a Huckabee nomination would confirm that image to a lot of conservatives.  Same thing would happen in 2012 that happened in 2008.  A big appeal to the middle at the expense of the base.

I like to think that living through 4 years of Obama will be a wake-up call to those who sat the last election out who would have otherwise voted for a more conservative candidate - those that couldn't hold their nose to vote for McCain.  Those are the folks to whom I give the finger.  Anyone who thought that Obama would just be another Clinton is surely going through a rather rude awakening.

I actually miss the Clinton days, and a year ago I'd of just as soon signed up to be his intern than say that!

you guys can't assume rinos would vote for this. this trancends party lines. This pits energy and natural resource producing states against consuming states.

So senators and congressmen from states like Alaska, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, etc wouldn't vote for something that would bankrupt their constituency . . .

Mallamutt,

It doesn't get anywhere near the necessary votes.

Remember the reason Kyoto was never passed was the Senate voted 97-0 telling Clinton not to bring the shit up there.

Yes, a lot has changed with the religion that is Global Warming but not that much.

Just look at Cap and Trade, they won't bring that up and it's child's play compared to this.

The real danger is what others have said...how much can Obama do on his own w/out ratification?

And here is the salient item in question:
(note: items in brackets or parenthesis are editorial annotations by Fightin' Words)

38. The scheme for the new institutional arrangement under the Convention will be based on three basic pillars: government; facilitative mechanism; and financial mechanism, and the basic organization of which will include the following:

World Government (heading added)
(a) The government will be ruled by the COP with the support of a new subsidiary body on adaptation, and of an Executive Board responsible for the management of the new funds and the related facilitative processes and bodies. The current Convention secretariat will operate as such, as appropriate.

To Redistribute Wealth (heading added)
b) The Conventions financial mechanism will include a multilateral climate change fund including five windows: (a) an Adaptation window, (b) a Compensation window, to address loss and damage from climate change impacts [read: the "climate debt" Monckton refers to], including insurance, rehabilitation and compensatory components, a Technology window; (d) a Mitigation window; and (e) a REDD window, to support a multi-phases process for positive forest incentives relating to REDD actions.

With Enforcement Authority (heading added)
The Conventions facilitative mechanism will include: (a) work programmes for adaptation and mitigation; (b) a long-term REDD process; a short-term technology action plan; (d) an expert group on adaptation established by the subsidiary body on adaptation, and expert groups on mitigation, technologies and on monitoring, reporting and verification; and (e) an international registry for the monitoring, reporting and verification of compliance of emission reduction commitments, and the transfer of technical and financial resources from developed countries to developing countries. The secretariat will provide technical and administrative support, including a new centre for information exchange [read; enforcement].

The way I see it is that Obama can't approve the Copenhagen treaty.  Oh he can try and he probably will, but the Senate would have to ratify the treaty by two thirds majority if I remember correctly.

Remember the Kyoto treaty went nowhere.  This one won't go much further.

The Europeans, for all their sanctimonious mewling, never met their Kyoto commitments and finally gave up.

http://tinyurl.com/ygeld9e

http://tinyurl.com/yh35fsj

Then there's this; we did better that europe despite not ratifying the treaty:

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that U.S. carbon-equivalent emissions rose by 1.3 percent between 2000 and 2004. During the same period, the U.S. population grew by 4 percent, and our economy grew by 19.5 percent.

In the 25 European nations reporting under the Kyoto Protocol, carbon equivalent emissions rose by 2.2 percent during the same period (and by 2.4 percent in the 15 Western European nations). The EU-25 population, meanwhile, grew by 1.6 percent and their collective economy grew by just under 7 percent.

Between 2000 and 2004, America had more than twice the population and economic growth of Europe and a little more than half of Europes growth in carbon emissions. Thats not so bad, is it? Should we really be looking up to Europe? One would hope that environmental consciousness is not about signing treaties or setting bold goals, but rather about decreasing emissions. That is where we beat everyone.
