Balloon Boy: Shopping a New Reality Show?

Apparently they've been spreading their proposal for a new Heene family reality show all over Hollywood.

Which makes this quote from Balloon Boy even more provocative:

In an interview with CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "Balloon Boy" Falcon Keene was asked why he didn't come out from the garage attic when his parents called for him. In response, the 6-year-old said, "Um. You guys said that, hrm, we did this for a show."

They're re-interviewing the family, exploring the hoax possibility, though at the moment authorities say they think it's legit.

Here's the 911 call, which sounds kinda fake to me. But 911 calls do sound fake to me, generally -- since I really don't know how people really sound on a 911 call in the grip of panic.

The parents were watching, and their cameras just happened to be rolling, when the balloon accidentally became untethered.

The Only Video Recap You'll Ever Need: Cuffy Meigs chops all the key moments into a short video, including the "did this for a show" and vomiting.

This does call for more investigation, but it is also disturbing the extent to which the quote is being twisted.  The boy did not simply say, "we did this for a show," as is the version used in most media accounts.

What he DID say, as is quoted accurately here, "You guys said that, hrm, we did this for a show."

That first part, "you guys said that . . . " is the difference between a little kid admitting to a lie and simply repeating what the media had told him.

39 I really don't know how people really sound on a 911 call in the grip of panic.

Incomprehensible, or not panicked at all, usually.

I listened to a lot of them for an old job, and the only people who fell between "can handle shit" and "can't handle shit" were misrepresenting the situation, trying to sound panicked or not panicked without knowing what that really sounds like. Calls that sound "real," like on a cop drama, are all fake, somehow.

They do fool juries reliably, though, because juries don't hear a lot of them, except on cop dramas. Keep that in mind, hobo-killers.

HotAir has a link to Sarah's Facebook/NRO article. The woman packs more common sense into one paragraph than can be found in the entire city of DC.

We rely on petroleum for much more than just powering our vehicles It is essential in everything from jet fuel to petrochemicals, plastics to fertilizers, pesticides to pharmaceuticals. According to the Energy Information Administration, our total domestic petroleum consumption last year was 19.5 million barrels per day (bpd). Motor gasoline and diesel fuel accounted for less than 13 million bpd of that. Meanwhile, we produced only 4.95 million bpd of domestic crude. In other words, even if we ran all our vehicles on something else (which wont happen anytime soon), we would still have to depend on imported oil. And well continue that dependence until we develop our own oil resources to their fullest extent.

98 It is sort of frightening that the whole country was aware of this, some glued to their television sets for the duration.  But, as pointed out by a friend this morning, "this was a fabrication of cable television.  If there were no cable television there would have been no story, it would have been a couple of lines int he paper and on the local news, never would have made the nightly news".   Makes you wonder if he is right.

99 Here's the 911 call, which sounds kinda fake to me.

Heard a guy on a local (Denver) radio show this morning who'd met the dad while working as a camera man at a local theater, where Wife Swap wanted to capture some footage of the Heene's "thespian predilections." This camera guy says he came away from the experience believing Papa Heene was quite the actor. If that's the case, the I have no trouble believing this call was a put-on. But who knows . . .?

That paint you see drying is government approved, eco-friendly institutional Collectivist Grey, made from bio-degradable soybeans and US dollars. You may choose to have other colors in your life, grey is not compulsory. However there is a 500% surcharge on other colors, to defray the cost of painting the lives of the poor, the needy, the transgendered, the half-white, and those victimized by the era of Corporate Big Paint which thankfully ended in Year One, or 2009 AD.

120 Curiouser and Curiouser...  I think I remember seeing a photo this morning of the attic access, with a set of pull-down folding steps.  I don't see how a six-year-old acting alone could pull down the steps, climb up in there, and then pull the steps up behind him, including figuring out how to fold them up before pulling the trap door shut. An adult could do it but I don't think a six-year-old, even a feral, non-pussified six-year-old could do it.  I don't think he'd have the strength, even if the springs engaged once you got it lifted part way up.   There's just no way a 50-lb kid got up in there by himself, retracted the steps, closed the hatch, and then hung out for several hours while all of this was going on.

122 Perhaps we should just adopt the French Revolutionary Calendar and call today 25 Vendmiaire CCXVIII. We have adopted a lot of the French pose anyway... systemic unemployment around 10%, anemic or nonexistent growth, a government office and bureaucracy for nearly every human activity (a favorite department is the French Ministry for Social Cohesion), endless race problems, entitlement doles everywhere, the head of state bootlicking foreign tyrants...

The list gets too long. Too bad we won't adopt the French attitude to nuclear power. So we've got that going for us.

Regarding the Republican nomination process:

It ought to be a rule that open primary delegates only count as half votes at the convention. The only reason McCain succeeded was that cross-overs and independents voted for him. McCain also got a lot of military and retired military support.

The other problems:

1) Smuckabee's campaign's playing to the Southern Baptist crowd. Subtly feeding into anti-Catholic (Brownback) and anti-Morom (Romney) sentiments.

2) Guiliani's dumbass "wait for Florida" strategy

3) Fred! starting too late (I supported Fred's campaign monetarily but voted for Romney in the Alabama primary because Fred stopped campaigning after South Carolina.)

Bullshit. Ask a two year old who broke a cookie jar. Nobody has to teach  him how to lie.

191   Haley Barbour.   He can win it.

Posted by: labrat at October 16, 2009 06:41 PM (VpkbL)

192 This looking for someone charismatic is stupid.  I don't care what the media says,  Barack Obama is NOT charismatic.  He's cold, arrogant, and ugly with a speaking voice that has the SAME TONE while he's telling a joke, conferring the medal of honr,  explaining how health care isn't going to kill us, really, it won't, or attacking Bush.   He is a poor speaker.

The reason everyone acts like he's charismatic is because THEY SAY SO.  The crowds ACTED like he was charismatic (remember all of those fainting women?).  The crowds for Obama were under massive peer pressure.   All it took was two or three girls to start saying he was dreamy,  and pretty soon everyone was saying it and gals were fainting.  It's all hype,  which is continuing with the media to this day.

Mitt Romney is every bit as charismatic as Obama,  which is to say "not much."  BUT,  he's actually handsome and his wife is a pleasant person.  So if he comes to your town,  get out there and act like he's the neatest thing since sliced bread.  Same with whoever else runs, even (shudder) Huckabee.   Palin, Pawlenty,  I don't care.   I really hope Sarah is the nominee but what we want is the story that "the GOP has a bench full of charismatic contenders" not "the GOP candidates are boring."

We MUST change the message.  So ACT like all of these people are swell!  Applaud like hell and whistle and shout if you are at one of their appearances.  Make the media look around and say "WTF?"   Make them write stories about how Pawlenty has caught fire, or Huckabee is surprisingly inspiring, or Palin is a warrior princess.   We have GOT to excite the public,  and as Rummy once said,  "You go to war with the army you've got."  (Yeah,  I know, he made mistakes,  but that's still a good quote.)

These are the candidates we have.  Barring the rise of someone completely out of the political spectrum like Steve Wynn,   we have to work with them.  So let's just act like they are great.  It will confuse the media and annoy the democrats.

I can't get this out of my head, but do you think the parents gave the kid ipecac syrup to make the kid 'sick' for this mornings interviews so he wouldn't have to answer any questions?

No parent would EVER make their kid appear on tv if he was sick.  Give me a break.

I'm hoping more people, (including the police) see if the kid was dosed with codiene or ipecac to make him sick.

I hope the police chief is playing dumb on tv saying he 'believes them'... or maybe the global warming human extinction movement should be allowed to continue
