Hyperpartisan Florida (By Way of Maryland) Democratic Representative Robert Wexler... Resigning

You know him from his relentless spittle-flying hackery during the Clinton impeachment, and then the charged 2000 recount.

Hannity gave him some hassles by revealing he was a year-round resident of a DC suburb in Maryland, rather than Florida.

Wexler, a Florida Democrat who was elected to his congressional seat in 1996, announced his plans to reporters at his Boca Raton office. The seven-term congressman said he cherished the opportunity to serve Floridians and never forgot those who put him in office.

"I never sat on the sidelines. I got into the fray," [Wexler said].

Oh boy did he.

Because Wexler will leave office before his term is scheduled to end, Gov. Charlie Crist will call a special election for the seat that represents Florida's 19th district, which covers parts of Palm Beach and Broward counties.

My tipster, plugged in to GOP politics, says the GOP probably picks up the seat... but... no, I don't think so. Palm Beach? It's a very liberal Democratic area. The fact they've had such a hyperpartisan liberal for so long makes me doubt the GOP can capitalize here.

Here's a map of District 19.

West Palm Beach and Broward counties are very blue, but there are some nice neighborhoods on that map. Nice Neighborhoods are full of people with devalued investments. I couldn't begin to predict this one.

I wish it was Wasserman-Schultz bowing out.

He was one of those types would would vote for nuclear freezes and publicly bash the military, only to privately ensure that Sacramento County's three military bases expanded. After a very narrow victory in the Great Upchuck of 1994, and a still narrow victory in 1996, he decided it was no fun anymore and retired. Today the district is a solid seat for Dan Lungren.

103 Wexler's district reaches south to cover most of the City of Margate. The FBI recently arrested a Broward County Commissioner, a Broward County School Board member and a Margate City Commissioner for taking bribes, with everyone expecting they will sing about more financial corruption by local politicians. It wouldn't exactly shock me if Wexler was connected to some of this stuff, even though his base is Palm Beach rather than Broward.

GOP chances at a pick-up? Slim, though not impossible. The state legislature has gerrymandered the area enough to get some R's elected, but they're concentrated on the coast: in the state House and Senate, and the US House all include a thin strip along the coast, in some cases only going as far west as US 1. (I live in Fort Lauderdale, literally half a block on the GOP side of US 1 and thus that of that district line). State House Majority Whip Ellyn Bogdanoff's district (my district) probably overlaps Wexler's US House seat by a bit, but she's already running in a state Senate race she has a much better chance of winning.

Who I could really see with some chance at it would State House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, whose district has much more overlap with Wexler's (Hasner's base is in Delray while Wexler's is in Boca). Hasner is very ambitious so I could see him going for it. Anyone would be an improvement over Wexler, but I think Hasner could especially be an asset to the GOP in Congress.

107 I'm in Wexler's district, so obviously this is the best news I've had in quite a while.

IMO, this seat is actually vulnerable. There was a republican challenger last time, but he ran a poor campaign springing the "MD resident" thing months too early allowing Wexler and the media plenty of time to downplay it. That he was also a fairly slimy guy with lots of his own baggage didn't help either.

This is a democrat district, but its not full of San Francisco type moonbats. There's a large retired northern Jewish contingent, and a lot of blacks and hispanics as well.

I have quite a few retired Jewish friends and many were pro-Obama initially, but I'd say about 80% of those are highly negative on him now. Rasmussen also suggests that black and Hispanic support for Obama has softened as well.

It might be all that's needed for this district to flip is 10-20,000 disgruntled democrats to stay home, and unaffiliateds to break for a republican challenger.

The local FBI corruption probes have damaged the Democrat brand somewhat, as well as the Palm Beach democrats choosing a muslim to head the local party organization a few years ago. That didn't sit well with a lot of the retired Jewish contingent and really fractured the local party.
