| Rupert Murdoch Joins Ted Stevens In The Ranks of Internet Super-Geniusdom (chad)Ranting before a group of news executives in Bejing Murdoch accused Google and other news aggregators of stealing his content. Their crime? Sending users to his sites via hyperlinks where they are exposed to all those lovely revenue generating ads. In Murdoch's world making him money = stealing. The funny thing is that, as Newsweek points out, Google makes it possible to prevent their bots from indexing his sites. So why doesn't News Corp (and AP et. al.)implement that fix? My guess, because someone who actually understands the internet know that referrals from aggregators increase revenues but they want a convient excuse to implement a pay for content model.Comments1
The funny thing is that some of his news sites provide a google specific sitemap pointing out where all of the articles to index are.

I don't like Rupert, either. He's about as conservative as Allahpundit, i.e. probably a fiscal conservative but perfectly fine with letting the country slide into the sewer with the social issues. Rupert likes tabloid trash. Read his UK papers. They're fucking garbage. They talk about the British people like they're children that need to be controlled. You see the tabloid element on Fox. Geraldo is there. Their website always has the latest gossip about the airheads in LA.

I will try to explain how it takes revenue away from a news source.
Lets say someone generally checked their newspaper every day but has since switched to google news. Google news might have a story but they will list several sources for the content. Changes are Murdoch's paper isn't the first source listed. It might not even be in the top five sources. If a user reads a story, they generally click on the first link given to the story. So a user going to Google News goes to the news sources that are favored by Google News. Go to news.google.com and see how many stories have links to Murdoch's properties. I just looked and saw exactly zero. news.google.com is a news portal that is trying to take the place of people's local or traditional news portal. The user can not set their preference for what sources they want listed first. Google controls where that revenue goes. Posted by: crosspatch at October 11, 2009 08:07 PM (ZbLJZ) 27

Especially since foxnews.com specifically allows google to index them and provides them a list of all the articles to index. It is easy to opt out. His real problem is he doesn't like aggregators. If I was a news provider, I'd hate them too, but they can't opt out because there isn't too much original content in generic news anymore. What Murdoch needs to do is encourage (with $$$ and web skills) those self selecting aggregators (Ace, etc.) and communities (CJ's links page is an example - I've been banned too don't flame me) which feed his content engines. Multiple independent referrers boost Google rankings and add "flavor".
If he wants me to me to pay for content I expect a highly personalized product delivered by hot FOX chicks, that is somewhat exclusive -- like the old Early Bird when it was hand delivered by a cute young USAF E3 (along with the coffee). Posted by: Jean at October 11, 2009 08:38 PM (xCBQ4) 58

I wonder if the reason Fox has so much tabloid stuff is that the other networks don't carry that, so people who are looking for stories about celebrity scandals and stuff end up at the Fox News site almost automatically, while if they are looking for news on Obama, there are many more choices and thus less likely to wind up at Fox.
I am not a big expert on this but it does seem logical, which may be why Murdoch has such an interest in tabloid trash: it's a money making aspect of the news. There HAS to be a reason why Greta spent a gazillion hours on the Anna Nichole Smith story. Posted by: Miss Marple at October 11, 2009 08:41 PM (UQado) 63

The very term "citizen journalist" betrays their bias. Journalists are not deputized nor in the military nor police. It's just a freeking job. Posted by: eman at October 11, 2009 09:09 PM (tXuig) 96

robtr, no worries, this place isn't an echo chamber.
I guess my contention that print media is based more on where they used to be so completely dominant, and today, not so much. they're getting beat to the punch on so many news stories, blatantly refusing to cover others, and leaving their naked liberalism out there for the average person to compare with other venues. it's taking its toll on them, and they're losing readership to other sources. like AOSHQ for example. Rupert may be a bit of a loon but without news corp we'd truly fucked. We don't have many other alternative news sources. Blogs aren't news sources. They don't, for the most part, do any original reporting.
Fox isn't perfect by any stretch but to reach for the shit flinging key at the drop of the hat is just asinine. Rupert's watching over his interests, however poorly his tactics may be. You write this idiocy, and you have the nerve to call me dense? You threw red herring after strawman after appeal-to-victimhood on that thread just to maneuver yourself into a position from which you could pontificate on your sophomoric public utilities idea. You did all that, and yet you have the nerve to say something about my tone after you presented a logically baseless case in favor of shifting more power to the federal government? I point at the moon and you bitch about my dirty fingernails. If I could buy your stupid ideas for what they're worth and then sell them for what you think they're worth, I could probably cover medical treatment for the entire world.
