Rupert Murdoch Joins Ted Stevens In The Ranks of Internet Super-Geniusdom (chad)

Ranting before a group of news executives in Bejing Murdoch accused Google and other news aggregators of stealing his content. Their crime? Sending users to his sites via hyperlinks where they are exposed to all those lovely revenue generating ads.

In Murdoch's world making him money = stealing.

The funny thing is that, as Newsweek points out, Google makes it possible to prevent their bots from indexing his sites. So why doesn't News Corp (and AP et. al.)implement that fix? My guess, because someone who actually understands the internet know that referrals from aggregators increase revenues but they want a convient excuse to implement a pay for content model.

1 The funny thing is that some of his news sites provide a google specific sitemap pointing out where all of the articles to index are.

Rupert likes tabloid trash. Read his UK papers. They're fucking garbage. They talk about the British people like they're children that need to be controlled. You see the tabloid element on Fox. Geraldo is there. Their website always has the latest gossip about the airheads in LA.

26 I will try to explain how it takes revenue away from a news source.

Lets say someone generally checked their newspaper every day but has since switched to google news.  Google news might have a story but they will list several sources for the content.  Changes are Murdoch's paper isn't the first source listed.  It might not even be in the top five sources.  If a user reads a story, they generally click on the first link given to the story.

So a user going to Google News goes to the news sources that are favored by Google News.

Go to news.google.com and see how many stories have links to Murdoch's properties.  I just looked and saw exactly zero.  news.google.com is a news portal that is trying to take the place of people's local or traditional news portal.  The user can not set their preference for what sources they want listed first.  Google controls where that revenue goes.

57 What Murdoch needs to do is encourage (with $$$ and web skills) those self selecting aggregators (Ace, etc.) and communities (CJ's links page is an example - I've been banned too don't flame me) which feed his content engines.  Multiple independent referrers boost Google rankings and add "flavor".

If he wants me to me to pay for content I expect a highly personalized product delivered by hot FOX chicks, that is somewhat exclusive -- like the old Early Bird when it was hand delivered by a cute young USAF E3 (along with the coffee).

62 I wonder if the reason Fox has so much tabloid stuff is that the other networks don't carry that, so people who are looking for stories about celebrity scandals and stuff end up at the Fox News site almost automatically, while if they are looking for news on Obama, there are many more choices and thus less likely to wind up at Fox.

I am not a big expert on this but it does seem logical, which may be why Murdoch has such an interest in tabloid trash: it's a money making aspect of the news.

There HAS to be a reason why Greta spent a gazillion hours on the Anna Nichole Smith story.

Maybe so but I would also bet that the majority of people that listen to talk radio also either read the frigging newspaper each day or watch the news. If you think talk radio has it covered though fine. Let's bash Fox because Rupert is a frigging capitalist. We all can agree on hatin on those guys.

Posted by: robtr at October 11, 2009 08:46 PM (/1QEK)

Absolutely not.  Have you ever read a proposal from a ad firm on the demographic penetration of the different media and their relative costs?  A better complementary buy is newsprint and local /network TV.  Talk radio feeds billboards, sports related buys, and prime-time buys.

Yeah we seem to have gotten off track, this whole thread is about bashing rupert, not you in particular. I said leave him alone because he is one of the few that sometimes has a conservative point of view, you said no he's not there are plenty but you included fox in the plenty and it went on from there.

So sorry if you took it wrong. One point though, just because newspapers are losing money it dosen't people are not reading them, They are only they are not paying for it. I think that was Rupert's point about google. Google aggrigates news other organizations pay to produce so the ads go to google and not Rupert because google takes all of the other peoples stuff for free and puts it in one place.

98 robtr, no worries, this place isn't an echo chamber.

I guess my contention that print media is based more on where they used to be so completely dominant, and today, not so much.

they're getting beat to the punch on so many news stories, blatantly refusing to cover others, and leaving their naked liberalism out there for the average person to compare with other venues. it's taking its toll on them, and they're losing readership to other sources. like AOSHQ for example.

Well maybe, but most of Ace's posts link to mainstream media articles don't they? Ace has his own original and most of the time hilarious take on the article he's linking to but none the less someone had to pay someone to write the original article.

I think the news producers ie: papers and such are trying to find a way that we don't read their stuff for free and at least if we do read it for free we have to be on their website where they control the revenue from ads and not on google's site where we can skim through and only read something we are interested in.

Ok, what if you buy a newspaper and read it to a friend over the phone? Do you owe the newspaper more money?

The old models that linked money to information to access to the information are disintegrating, and players are scrambling to come up with something new or to hold onto the past.

It will be years before this is finally hashed out, if ever.

Maybe it'll be so good that we can put Windows stickers on our cars and cut-n-paste a standard reply to anyone asking for help on a Mac, "Just get a PC."

Microsoft was kind enough to send me a signature version of Win7 Ultimate. I let my Technet subscription expire, I guess I should renew that thing.

I'm thinking of getting an Intel 80GB SSD Gen II for my Son's laptop, and maybe an additional one for my desktop. I also have a weird desire to grab an i7 too, which means gutting the existing Q6600 machine I'm on now, and starting over. Too bad because I was just getting used to Windows being such a pig I just decided to go all overkill on my home computer last year. I mean 8GB of DDRII and an overclocked quad-core should be just enough to run IE8.

I like the cut of your jib. I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.

For my daughter's birthday I almost made her a hackentosh out of a Dell mini-10, but she didn't want it.

160 158 Jim, go see what chemjeff built for himself on last nights thread.  12Gb Ram - i7

Posted by: Jean at October 11, 2009 10:13 PM (xCBQ4)

No I missed that. So that means I'll have to go with 16GB then, and RAID-0 my SSDs. I bet I would get all the girls!

note:  sorry to steal the thread chad

to get an i7 you need a new motherboard but the new asus' aren't that expensive

ssd's ROCK!!!!!!!!!!! like an 80's hairband, go to newegg for some good ones, i would go with an ssd for the os and a huge 7200rpm for storage

i use two 128gig torqx in raid0 in the lappy, i should be getting 440read/400write speeds aka batshit fast

I never called you a troll.  We did not have a "minor policy difference."

I hyper-reacted to a snide little lefty-think comment you shit through your keyboard.  I apologized for my that reaction.

Obviously you are too utterly dense to recognize that I was being polite by not not mentioning you by name, but if you insist, I'll be more than happy to pound on your head for every stupid thing you say here until the end of time, as I'm sure you will give me plenty of opportunity, you fucking psycho.

The motion picture industry fought the video player industries tooth and nail when they came out. The irony is that the video player (tapes and dvds) bailed them out and ended up being a bigger moneymaker for them than theatrical releases or broadcast rights.

You write this idiocy, and you have the nerve to call me dense?  You threw red herring after strawman after appeal-to-victimhood on that thread just to maneuver yourself into a position from which you could pontificate on your sophomoric public utilities idea.

You did all that, and yet you have the nerve to say something about my tone after you presented a logically baseless case in favor of shifting more power to the federal government?

I point at the moon and you bitch about my dirty fingernails.

If I could buy your stupid ideas for what they're worth and then sell them for what you think they're worth, I could probably cover medical treatment for the entire world.
