Obama Peace Prize Reaction

Mine was to burst out laughing.

It seems that most people think it's too soon. That includes a worthy recipient of the award Lech Walesa.

Mickey Kaus says Obama should turn it down. Yeah, right.

Nor surprisingly, there are idiots who think this is AWESOME.

Behold David Ignatius in the Washington Post.

The Nobel Peace Prize award to Barack Obama seems so goofy -- even if you’re a fan, you have to admit that he hasn’t really done much yet as a peacemaker. But there’s an aspect of this prize that is real and important -- and that validates Obama’s strategy from the day he took office.

The Obama team came to the White House convinced that one of America’s biggest problems in the world was “reflexive anti-Americanism,” as Obama put it in his speech to the United Nations General Assembly two weeks ago. They saw America’s unpopularity as a big national-security problem, and they were right.

So they set about winning hearts and minds (the Nobel judges among them) from Day One. Obama gave a series of speeches calculated to position him as the Un-Bush. He listed his achievements in that same U.N. speech -- halting torture, ordering the closure of Guantanamo, withdrawing from Iraq, backing negotiations on climate change, and paying America’s debts at the United Nations itself.

Europeans liked it, too, when the president picked a fight with Israel over settlements, and when he showed himself so determined to negotiate with Iran that he overlooked the fact that its government had stolen an election.

That’s what he’s being honored for, really: reconnecting America to the world and making us popular again.

High school kids want to be popular. Nations want to be prosperous, secure and in America's case, a force for good in the world. Those things don't usually lead to popularity because it means making hard choices and doing the right but often un-popular thing....you know, like a grown up.

Obama is making America popular again by talking us down and saying in effect, "We are nothing special, just one of the gang. We've been bad before and I'm sorry. I won't do anything you don't like."

That's morally bankrupt and dangerous. But who cares? We can eat lunch with the cool kids again!

No reaction yet from another Nobel Peace Prize winner...the Dalai Lama. You know the guy Mr. Wonderful refuses to meet with to placate the peace loving Chinese government.

Integrity.

It was irritating a year or two ago, then it became sort of gobsmacking - but a tired sort of gobsmacking.  The relentless appetite that the world at large seems to have for fellating Obama has so permeated the universe that it's becoming part of the backdrop.  It's not even really funny anymore, because you know it's coming.

It's like watching Gilligan's Island.  No matter what, you know the outcome of every episode, even the dialogue and puns are telegraphed.

This has gotten boring, and I'm beginning to wonder if that has been the strategy all along.

The strategy has not been to bore us but to make him a part of our every-minute lives. Maniacal, power hungry leaders have shown a historical tendency to do that sort of thing.

52 I watched anti-American demonstrations from my apartment window  in West Berlin in 1968.

The left would say, "It was because we were in Vietnam."

But then,  how to explain that in  1979  Iran overthrew the Shah and held our embassy employees hostage for over a year,  even though then President Carter had backed Khomeni over the Shah?  To this day the government of Iran is anti-American.

Pakistan  had anti-American demonstrations all through the Clinton years;  those demonstrations didn't begin with Bush.

Most of the world doesn't like us,  never did, and won't no matter what President Hopey Changey does or says.  It's just the way the world is.

Al Gore: Spreads junk science about man-made global warming resulting in unnecessary financial burden on businesses, forcing them to lay off workers, increasing worldwide unemployment, poverty, starvation.  Nobel Peace Prize!

George W. Bush: Fights terrorism to keep America 100% safe in years following 9/11, spends hundreds of millions of dollars to spare millions of Africans from AIDS.  NO Prize!

Barack Obama: Commits endless series of embarassing gaffes in front of foreign leaders, earns praise of muslim tyrants and communist dictators, allows Iran, Russia and China to pursue worldwide aggression unchecked, dismantles the American free market to replace it with the theft and slavery of Socialism.  Noble Peace Prize, in eleven days flat!

The Michael Moore of Oslo
John Podhoretz - 10.09.2009 - 10:06 AM
I can’t agree with my colleagues here on CONTENTIONS that a) Barack Obama should reject the Nobel Peace Prize or b) be embarrassed by it. The Nobel Committee chose him wisely because he does, in fact, represent the organization’s highest ideals.

He is an American president queasy about the projection of American power. He is an American president who rejects the notion of American exceptionalism. He is an American president eagerly in pursuit of legitimacy to be granted him not by those who voted for him but by those who do not cast a vote and who chafe at American leadership. It is his devout wish that America become one of many nations, influencing the world indirectly or not influencing it at all, rather than “the indispensable nation,” as Madeleine Albright characterized it. He is the encapsulation, the representative, the wish fulfillment, the very embodiment, of the multilateralist impulse. He is, almost literally, a dream come true for the sorts of people who treasure and value the Nobel Peace Prize.

It’s the most obvious choice, once you think about it, since Michael Moore won an Oscar for Fahrenheit 9/11.

Posted by: Joe at October 09, 2009 10:33 AM (0Gde6)

71

The Nobel committee has continued down the path of irrelevancy.  The committee has made some fairly bad choices for the last decade or so, its anti-America agenda fits in perfectly with Mr. Obama’s.  The following is a list of recent Nobel winners. Examples 1994    Yasser Arafat (A terrorist), 2001 Kofi Annan (Anti-American Politician), 2002 Jimmy Carter (Anti American Politician), 2005 Mohamed El Baradei  (A fool and a Liar), 2007    Al Gore (A large fool and liar), 2009 Barrack Obama (Anti-American Politician). This is a collection of Leftist doofuses, unknown bureaucrats, petty dictators, terrorists, conmen, and crooks. What distinguished company, Mister President “No Clue”.  The continuing journey to mental retardation is firmly imbedded in our society; this is not all that different from giving an Oscar to a pedophile.

Serious question. The prize money should go to the US Treasury shouldn't it?

Posted by: nevergiveup at October 09, 2009 10:37 AM (TfW4T)

92 Most of the world doesn't like us,  never did, and won't no matter what President Hopey Changey does or says.  It's just the way the world is.

Leftists are unable to perceive this, largely because, though claiming to be 'sophisticated,' they are actually far more provincial than anyone else.

They believe America to be the center of racism, sexism, injustice, intolerance, hate, and they think this simply because it's what they see.  But the thought that the rest of the world is massively worse on all those issues, even does not see that there is a problem?  Doesn't occur to them.  They see only what's in front of them.

Why?  Because looking at the problem in front of them, and then setting themselves up as NOT part of that problem, lets them elevate themselves above it, and feed their need for superiority.

But looking at another country?  A brown country, or a non-Western people?  That would be WRONG!  Leftists believe in multiculuralism, that all societies are equal!  (Except ours, which is inferior.)

He has quite literally achieved nothing in the realm of international diplomacy.  All he's done is make unilateral concessions to thug regimes and give a few speeches.

The awards for physics, chemistry, and (looking it up) medicine still mean something. Astronomers sometimes get the physics Nobel, but there are other prizes they go for instead.

Nobel was apparently crap at math because he didn't include that as a prize topic. Mathematicians go for the Fields Medal.

Nobel never should have instituted a "Peace Prize". He should have guessed it would become a political tool.

152 Obama's the world's patsy and his narcissism so elevated as to remain unaware of just how hard he's and, by extension, America's getting kicked. Obama willingly diminishes the nation, and friends and enemies alike the world over are champing at the bit to a) knock us down and b) climb over us on the way to their own global prestige.

This now unequivocally empty award is a well-placed ego-stroking to one foolish enough to accept it so that it may encourage that fool to let tyranny and oppression prosper. Defend innocent Afghani's from the Taliban? Over. Protect Georgia et al. from the Russian bear? Nuh-uh. Free North Koreans from their misery? Nope. Deny nuclear proliferation in tinpot dictatorships? Nah. Defend a democracy in Israel and a constitution in Honduras? Heavens no. Encourage freedom-seeking masses in the prisons of Iran to rebel? Not a chance. Bleed America dry for handouts around the globe with money we don't have and further diminishing its ability to project a policing force for humanity? Yep.

The Nobel Peace Prize is a joke. Has been for years. That's not a worry and makes for great comment fodder. What this absurd theater signifies, however, is infinitely more significant. And tragic. We are being "led" by a nobody (who will latch on to this like it was a lifesaver) who himself is being led by a team of globalists intent on knocking off the only country still truly a defender of freedom that could go beyond its borders.

The world will rue the day it encouraged a man who has accomplished nothing to actually accomplish that which he says he wants to do, and the Nobel Committee encourages, because a momentum in the decline of freedom and those who will fight for it will be hard to reverse and, paradoxically, cost incalculable lives. It's not a Peace Prize, it's a Parchment Peace Prize.

Go Peace!

But just as the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center was ramping up to investigate abuses of protesters after this summer's disputed presidential election, the group received word that - for the first time since it was formed - its federal funding request had been denied.

"If there is one time that I expected to get funding, this was it,'' said Rene Redman, the group's executive director, who had asked for $2.7 million in funding for the next two years. "I was sur prised, because the world was watching human rights violations right there on television.''

Many see the sudden, unexplained cutoff of funding as a shift by the Obama administration away from high-profile democracy promotion in Iran, which had become a signature issue for President Bush. But the timing has alarmed some on Capitol Hill.

248 RayGun,

I have a few questions.  WHY do those 45,000 die because they don't have insurance?  It can't be from injuries,  because emergency rooms are required by law to treat anyone who shows up.  This is also true for people who are taken to emergency rooms because of high fevers (pneumonia and infections), pain (appendicitis,  heart attacks, obstructed bowels, etc. or convulsions or unconsiousness (brain tumors, stroke, diabetic shock, etc.).

So, all of those deaths can be ruled out because people get treatment when they present symptoms.

I therefore conclude that this study assumes lives would be saved by preventive medicine not available to those with no insurance.   Except preventive medicine IS available to those with no insurance.  Medicaid takes care of a lot of the poor.  There are free clinics in every major city, Planned Parenthood offers free services on things other than abortion,  Catholic Charities offers assistance,  drug companies offer help with prescription drugs, and many, many doctors will give treatment with reduced rates, payment plans, and a certain amount of charity work.

I do not see how the lack of insurance immediately means 45,000 people died last year.  Are they just logging deaths and inferring that they would have been saved if only they had had insurance?  How many people died WITH insurance?
How many people without insurance died immediately (insurance therefore being irrelevant) from gunshot wounds, motorcycle accidents, drug overdoses, and suicide?

I would have to know a bit more about that study from experts (one fact being exactly who they are) before I give any credence to such a claim.

Posted by: Miss Marple at October 09, 2009 01:22 PM (UQado)

256 RayGun:

Doing the work that YOU should be doing since you were the one who supported the Harvard study's figures,  I notice in the article that they do not factor in accidental deaths, drug overdose, suicides, murders or deaths in conflict,  none of which are affected by whether or not someone has health insurance.

In fact,  I dare say military people have NO health insurance since they are treated by the military hospitals without charge, and I am pretty sure that most criminals don't have insurance.  The article fails to mention that they factored those categories into their study,  so I must assume they did not, since they mentioned state of health and socioeconomic factors as things they took into account.

I think you need to do further research.  I also think you need to work on your reading comprehension.

259 I've never read the study.

“Historically, every other developed nation has achieved universal health care through some form of nonprofit national health insurance. Our failure to do so means that all Americans pay higher health care costs, and 45,000 pay with their lives.”

That pretty much says it all.

262 RayGun,  you've never read the study?

Then why are you even quoting an article which doesn't EXPLAIN the study sufficiently?

Your last quote is just something lifted from that article and is a bunch of hyperbolic nonsense.

For example,  I could say "Historically, major metropolitan areas have traditionally elected democrats, and over1 million people have paid with their lives."

I have actual work to do,  so I am not wasting any more time with you.

Posted by: Miss Marple at October 09, 2009 02:05 PM (UQado)

263 The abstract says it all? If that were the case, then there would be no need for the rest of the paper.

You're supposed to read the rest of the paper and see if the data support the conclusion that you quote in the summary. You're supposed to at least try to view that data with a critical eye because people tend to view data that appeals to their prejudices with an uncritical eye.

It is a lot of work, but it makes it far easier to argue persuasively on a subject. For the record I find an argument of the form "I haven't read the report, but you can google it" to be utterly non-persuasive, but that's just me. I also find that people who routinely distort the names of people and organizations are sufficiently juvenile as to warrant just ignoring them, especially since I don't "listen to Faux News" and I had heard of the report that you are trumpeting but don't think enough of to actually read.

Remember his implied charge of racism because he didn't look like the all of the dead white guys on the money?

This is an outrage.

It took me a carbon footprint the size of China to lobby enough support for this.  Plus all the free ManBearPig publicity...further proof I am still relevant!

I still get residuals for guesting on South Park.  Can Barry O say the same?

Obaaama was nominated 11 days after taking office for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Enough CO2 expended on this subject.

270 I thought I posted this before, but maybe I am just lost in thread-land! I remember I got an award at entrance to the University of Chicago of $500 I think in the seventies. It was because, even as a moron of questionable standing, I tested reasonably well (go figure!). Who would have "thunk" it; being a complete moron (of the regular kind) on the other hand earns you millions (e.g. Obamas). Why should I have put so much effort in trying to be intelligent and actually know what I am talking about. Damn me! Could Carter have gotten one of these worthless awards too? You know, the last worst president. Nah, that would be too damn weird! Could that happen twice in my life? This is the craziest I have seen things, and I never imagined that people would be so stupid to vote for a slightly darker Carter who takes things south to "11" to Carter's more normal level of destruction. In addition, let us just go completely crazy and give the worst congress ever, more power for no apparent reason. Genius! Ammo up you better-sighted people! I am an independent. Some younger conservatives should survive 2010, but no Democrats. It should be like the quote at the head of this blog. If it is not, my nieces and nephews are totally screwed. We all get to be serfs. I do not mind being poor, but I hate not being free.

271 Anyone who says "faux news", is certifiably retarded. I read an abstract once by the congressional budget office in conjunction with Columbia University that categorically states that. It's been all over the news.

Jordans for cheap is now mainly concentrated on NIKE DUNK SB and NIKE TENNIS SB. So after thickened tongue it¡¯s easy to wear. In addition, the increased protection performance to the ankle. Added ZOOM AIR is mainly taking the X movement into account with its landing force, thus all of the Discount jordan shoes are better Jordans for sale.
