Something to Keep You Up Nights

From the Anchoress:

It is interesting to think, isn’t it, that if America is brought low (a no-longer unthinkable notion, unfortunately) and the crazymen that we’re hot to appease in Iran, or North Korea or Venezuela get together to do crazy things, the only fully-functioning and war-ready Democracy left to help the world will be…Israel.

Tiny, despised, fierce Israel.

I love irony, but that’s not an irony I want to see played out.

Unfortunately, the Israelis do not have nearly the force projection that we do. And while there are two oceans separating us from our direst enemies, the Israelis' enemies are right next door. The Israelis cannot stand between China and Taiwan or North and South Korea or Russia and the former soviet republics. If President Obama pusses out, many will suffer.

Related: The impending creation of a more sovereign European Union after Ireland's vote to ratify the Lisbon Treaty has Professor Kenneth Anderson musing about American decline and the President's "multilateralism":

Be wary, O Europe, above all, of liberal internationalist Americans bearing gifts of multilateralism. An America that does not assert, rudely and brusquely, its own interests and views first through Nato and elsewhere, an America that sings sweet songs of multilateral interdependence is, surely, a superpower that has decided to simply go along with what everyone else does, which is another way of saying it has tired of supporting the free riders, which is another way of saying that it, too, says one thing but might do another, and what it might do is not show up when the big battalions are finally needed.

Prudent Europeans fear and do not trust, above all, an America that does not put its own interests first and carry the rest along in train. Re-read Raymond Aron. Europe will soon enough face an Iranian nuclear weapon along with its massive dependence upon Russian natural gas, even as its military strength declines yearly – hourly – and in important respects it is today at least arguably more dependent on the American security guarantee, not less, than at any time since 1990.

Anderson is wordy and in great need of an editor, but he's worth a read if you're into international relations.

At the end of Obama's first term, there will not be one superpower in the world.  There will be two.

And neither will be the U.S.

By way of explanation for what is to follow. I have not owned a television for over 10 years. Listen to radio for various talk show hosts. Also tune into NPR so as to understand the enemy. An enemy I will someday need to put down.

On NPR this AM the old reliable lefty, (read as Communist), Dan Schorr, (notable only for being on Nixon's "enemies list"), commented on the President's meeting with General McChrystal, in Copenhagen.

Schorr suggested that the 25 minute meeting with the General was to remind General McChrystal who was CIC.

General McChrystal had been in London and had apparently made some public remarks that were interpreted as being a challenge to the President's leadership.

This would not be remarkable, except for the fact that Schorr's voice rose to a crescendo when he speculated that the CIC had dressed down General McChrystal.

In my travels around the inter tubes today, I have not seen any mention about this.

If any of you all heard Schorr, or if you've seen any mention of his comments, please comment. Sorry for the length.

15 Hussein, that's China and who, exactly?

Russia's wealth is mainly oil, but there's only so much to be done with it if there's no one but China to buy it.  If things are that bad, India will have had a nuclear exchange with a Taliban-ruked Pakistan, and whatever condition Israel is in, it will have levelled Iran by then.

Surely you don't mean the EU?

Posted by: Methos at October 04, 2009 12:18 AM (dhFYq)

16 Like I said at Hotair, a lot of folks who h8ed on American power did so in part hoping the decline of America would mean the rise of their own little part of the world. But all they will lose would be a powerful ally who kept their own regional PITA in check. A "multipolar" world won't mean the rise of French influence, it would mean French subjugation to Russia. It won't mean a rise in the influence of India, it would mean a struggle with China that it won't win. It won't mean the rise of Brazil, it would mean an increasingly lonely struggle against Chavez.

On the other hand, 0bama's failing, and failing real soon. Some of this crap he's done can be stopped, reversed or overcome, and this current generation of voters may be inoculated enough against Leftist idiocy that those who pursue sane defense policies need never again look over their shoulders when doing so. That's my hope.

18 A Patriot - my guess is that Schorr is projecting what he wanted to see happen. McChrystal's recent comments are definitely a challenge to Obama's leadership, and Obama should respond. The problem for the President is that he may hold the office but he holds little moral authority; should McChrystal decide to pack it in the public will be watching Petraeus and to some extent Gates and should their support for Obama be less than persuasive it will reflect very poorly on him.

Posted by: mrkwong at October 04, 2009 12:22 AM (G8Eo0)

19 Prof. Anderson reminds us that as individuals, Europeans love Obama, but as nations, their love doesn't translate into their nations doing any heavy lifting to help him in world affairs.  As much as they loved to carp about Cowboy Bush, they depended on him for leadership and on America to do the work of keeping them safe.

Good snippet, Malor.

I think we'll show up eventually. We always do. But maybe a delay or the perception of a delay will recalibrate our allies' attitudes. I'm pretty much in the camp of those tired of subsidizing the security of allies while getting chastized and undermined for "hegemony and imperialism." That charge has always been bullshit. The thing is we really aren't in a position to provide the subsidies. We're broke. We've spent the monies of future generations and have to scale back out of necessity despite some ancillary desire to "teach everyone a lesson." Well, let's pass the buck a bit more while hardening our own smaller sphere wherever possible. The reality is hitting us and we're in no position to keep it from hitting the rest of the West. They're getting what they asked for.

Lets just hope we can keep our anger and resolve going until the 2010 Congressional elections; that won't completely neuter Obama, but it will go a long way.

Aside from Israel, are there any nations in the world that are not the object of scorn and contempt around here?

Look at the viewpoint that is being expressed- the entire world is one seething mass of crazy dictators and thugs, and only America can "stand tall" and lead the way and kick ass and so on and so forth.

Where does this leave us? What is the neocon strategy? Belligerent posturing and bluster, leading to...war with Iran? War with North Korea? War with Venezuela? Hell, why not throw in Zimbabwe while we are at it?

8 years of this crap have left us weaker, more isolated and in a worse strategic position than we were in before. What did Bush's blowhardism effect in North Korea? What has the Iraq war accomplished? Other than destroying the one powerful enemy the Iranian regime had?

Our allies had nothing but contempt and ridicule for Bush and the neocons, for good reason.

 - - - - - - -
Our president has nothing but contempt and ridicule for our allies, and Sarkozy, for one, seems to have had enough of it.

But the "contempt" of the world for Bush is a lie.  You who in "the world" was "contemptuous" of Bush?

Not Britain
Not France under Sarko
Not Germany under Merkel
Not Italy under Berlosconi
Not Australia under John Howard
Not Canada under that guy in Canada
Not Poland
Not Mexico
Not Czech Republic
Not Hungary
Not Israel
Not Saud or UAE
Not Japan
Not China
Not So. Korea
Not Taiwan
Not Spain (even though the shoemaker was iffy)

So..."the world" that "had contempt" for Bush was...Belgium? Switzerland? Sweden?  And then assorted Latin American tinhorn despots, mostly communists.

Oh, boohoo, the commies and islamofascists hated Bush!

But they feared him and respected him enough not to fuck with him.

Do you think they fear or respect Obama?  No.  They see him as weak.

Bush kept us from being attacked for 8 years, even though we were all sure after 9/11 that we'd be attacked again.

Obama?  He's showing weak cards.  He's showing weak resolve to do anything more than be an appeasing smiler who likes crowds and cameras.

Who in the world loves us right now, really LOVES us?

Not Britain
Not France
Not Germany
Not Italy
Not Poland
Not Czech Republic
Not Spain
Not Canada

Hey...but Venezuela, they love us.  Cuba loves us.  Daniel Ortega loves us.  Honduran despot-wanabees love us.  Gaddafi loves us.

I'm not even sure Belgium loves us much, anymore.  But Gaddafi loves our president, his "brother."

You're an idiot.

39 ChipD, define "neocon"

Posted by: Andy at October 04, 2009 01:23 AM (VMyjP)

40 Chippie,

Let me clue you in here: Any association of individuals or nations is built on this little thing called trust. You either trust the individual/country or you can trust the individual/country to follow the rules.

When you have neither trust in the individual/country in question, and they have amply demonstrated contempt for the rules, what the Hell do you do then? Wish upon a star and click your heels three times? Sprinkle unicorn farts on them? Uncritically take their point of view as valid?

Oh wait, here's a good one: Actually think a bunch of j-holes who got Haaaahhhhvaaahhhd degrees (in lesbian underwater basketweaving, but dammit, it was at Haaaahhhhvaaahhhd) will somehow pull the perfect solution out of their asses at the last minute like Captain Picard on Star Trek, and you need only kiss the bad actors' asses until they do so?

In comparison, the neocon actions of threatening to kick their asses seem so much less foolish.

OK.  Nothing weird there.  Wait, did you say three people?  After "a man's gun went off..."

"...Investigators say bullets struck the man in his shoulder and throat, and also hit his wife in the arm.Another man was shot in the hand."

Only in Florida.  Whoever wrote that for WFTV doesn't seem to wonder how the hell a gun could just "go off" and shoot not one but multiple bullets.  I have a feeling someone or something was pulling the trigger.  Call it a hunch.

45 It's too late to listen to these (long), but Evan Sayet pretty much lays out why the only way to defeat the left in this country and around the world may eventually come down to the use of force.

It would be nice to take back the educational system, popular media, and the news but the past of least resistance is carved into place in our society, and the EU.

I'd like to see the right convince/persuade people more, but if the political 'solution' is solely based on trying to reach minds not receptive to rational thought through discussion, the futility of that approach must be considered.

56 Israel cannot fight a protracted high-intensity war. Not without U.S. material assistance. Israel's wars are fought on the level of what used to be known as Grand Tactics and which is now characterized, not quite correctly, as the operational level of warfare. I can well imagine that Israel has taken care to stockpile large reserves of spare parts and munitions, but it will never have enough to fight a high-intensity war for very long. In the Yom Kippur War of 1973 Israel was starting to run out of the means to continue fighting after just a few days. So, yes, as someone before me said, if the U.S. goes down, Israel goes down too. Unless of course Israel uses its first-strike nuclear capability to forestall a protracted high-intensity war. In other words, as the situation vis-a-vis the precipitous decline of U.S. power deteriorates, the peril of Israel resorting to a nuclear preemptive BOB (bolt-out-of-blue) increases. And therein lies the current danger of our present and possible future circumstances. If Israel reaches the point where she thinks she is in real and proximate existential peril, all hell's going to break loose.

57 If all men were angels, force would not be needed. Force ultimately is the only thing keeping us civilized. Evidence of that is all around us. As for me, I have to pay my taxes, even the ones I hate, because if I don't, men with badges and guns will eventually show up and my door. If I don't cooperate, a can of whupass gets opened up. I used to have some bad neighbors, druggies and such, they used to mess with me. They, on the other hand were not afraid of the cops. So, it fell to me to make them fear me. I won't go in to how I did it, but it got done. They left me and mine alone, just because they didn't understand me, and thought me to be a little crazy and unpredictable. They were right to think that.

Fear or respect, take your pick, but you have to have one or the other.

59 Chip D,

Let's have a look at what we've gotten from the Obama Administration so far...

Here's just the foreign policy:

European nations have refused to send significant numbers of new troops to aid the U.S.-led war effort in Afghanistan. Few countries have agreed to accept detainees held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Scottish officials ignored Obama’s plea to keep the Lockerbie bomber in prison, and U.S. efforts to head off a coup in Honduras were ineffective. North Korea continues to develop nuclear weapons, Iran may be doing so, and Middle East leaders have rebuffed Obama’s efforts at peacemaking.
FROM THE WASHINGTON POST

Then we have...

Gitmo still open

Iraq still on

Afghanistan still on and worsening fast

Secret wiretaps still on

Secret 'snatch and grab' of 'terrorists' still on - this just done recently in Somalia and no one has any idea where these supposed terrorists are now - can you say 'secret prison'?

Economy in shambles

Unemployment at 23 year record high unless you count actual unemployment numbers as reported by the Associated Press - then you get 17% - an all time unemployment record

Businesses failing nationally

Dollar to be replaced as world currency

Deficit under Bush - billions. Under Obama - trillions and growing rapidly

Promise to make government transparent, that no bill would be signed before it was reviewed for 5 days. That has not happened yet.

Mass demonstrations against a dubious health care plan - in the first 8 months of Obama's Presidency

Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, N. Korea laugh at us because they know we are weak

Plummeting poll numbers for the Democrats and the President

Obama interferes in NY politics, trying to force a black, blind governor not to run - the governor ignores him.

Scandal after scandal - NEA, ACORN, Charlie Rangel... the list grows each week

Over 25 unelected, unaccountable 'Czars' who seem more and more ready to supplant Congress, not to mention each one of them is riddled with problematic histories and illegal activities

A stimulus bill close to 1 trillion dollars that got us.... what?

With Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, N. Korea, record unemployment, ballooning deficits, an economy in shambles, ACORN, NEA scandals and a healthcare mess on his plate, Obama takes a trip overseas to work a deal for his Chicago machine buddies to get Olympic contracts and FAILS in the first round, making the USA look very bad.

All this with the Democrats running the White House, House, Senate, Supreme Court, most state governorships, and a slobbering media who carry the water for everything Democrats ask

The Left continues to blame their problems on Palin, Limbaugh, Beck, Right Wing Blogs, Bush, Cheney, Halliburton, Nixon, Reagan, Hannity, everyone but themselves

Hope and Change!

65 60 Pretty good SNL clip.  OK, not good except for the fact that they would attempt such a thing.  The whole show blows now.

Posted by: ParisParamus at October 04, 2009 01:48 AM (44Zv5)

This means little. The show has historically been falling off the ratings map for a decade. This is desperation for viewership to keep their jobs, and the low quality of the impersonation is par for the course with modern SNL.

Since want attention so bad, they might be tempted to go blackface for their Obama/Oprah impressions at this point.

They could start with Whoopi, and have her say that it isn't "racist racist".

The current situation makes you wonder who our "allies" will ultimately be.

Israel has been tasked, by the world, to take care of the Iranian threat, after which "the world" will set about condemning Israel for everything imaginable under the sun (especially as the financial destabilization that occurs can be fatal if Israel is left isolated).  The big difference, now, is that the US will be part of "the world" that actively sets about to destroy Israel through embargoes, isolation, and perhaps a blockade.  The reaction to Jews around the world will be monstrous.  We saw just a bit of what to expect back during Israel's last incursion into Gaza - to finally stop the rocket fire.  The world went nuts.  And that was a minor operation for which Israel showed far too much restraint.  Multiply the reaction to that by 1000 and that probably falls short of what is to come after an Iranian operation.  The greedy part of the world is looking to kill two birds with zreo stones by having Israel take out Iran, and then using that to take out Israel.

That's the big picture that I see.

Forgetting Israel and Iran for a second, the rest of the world without the traditional US role, will just revert back to a real state of nature.  It won't be pretty.  Nations that haven't defended themselves had better star learning how to do it.  Most are unable, and the rest of the jungle knows this.

The conflict boiling just under the surface is the one on American soil.

We have an administration that believes in breaking down society as we know it today. They believe that by dividing America they will be able to rally their foot soldiers to fight for more government control, viz. martial law.

The outside conflicts are of little consequence to these committed socialists, and the welfare of our military is just not that important.

The goal of this administration is domestic, not global. The goal is control and they are willing to go to any lengths to secure this goal.

More attention is focused on manipulating circumstances here at home. It is the American people who must be subjugated first.

That's the bad news.

The good news is that Americans are not, by nature, inclined to external control and will fight against any effort to impose control.

May God be with us in our struggle.

71 Be sure that America no longer has Israel's good  interests in mind with the usurper Kenyan Commie rat bastard and crew in the White House. WTF????

Nor the Poles...

Nor the Ukrainians...

Nor any other Democracy.

Note too, Israel has never been too awful of a reliable ally of ours either....Remember the USS Liberty and their penchant for placing spying moles in our government.

Clearly Israel has been in our interests a bulwark against the festering madness that is Islam, but she hardly gives a rip about us other than what she can extract re cash and weapons from us. She'll go it alone if need be too.

What did Bush's blowhardism effect in North Korea?

I don't remember any blowhardism.  All I seem to recall is Bush doing what the Democrats say they want to do- endless talks.  And he didn't act unilaterally either.  He held six party talks.  So during all this, what did Democrats do?  They complained that Bush should bypass multilateral discussion, ignore all our allies and potential allies in the region, and hold unilateral talks.  All this after complaining endlessly about his reckless, cowboy, unilateral ways.  (sigh).

82 Looking at the headlines on Drudge.  10 of our men killed in Afghanistan, and Obama, hands in his pockets, like a "dude" takes his wife out on a date.  I don't mind his wife, she's alright, although I wish she's stop hunching over, but this president gave only 25 minutes to his general, after months of delay, and now he's off for a night on the town.

If this was Bush, the press would be crucifying him.

83 Sorry I missed this post last night as I'm fighting a goddamn cold but to Thea's list of countries that GWB improved relations with you can add India, which is pretty fucking important strategically.  Also Thea's relatives are correct in that normal people in France that I've encountered are much more apolitical than the MSM jizzmops would have you believe.  Truth be known I get treated great there and there's no fucking way that I'm ever doing anything less than being 100% pro-USA.  The whole "France hates us" thing is a bullshit construct based probably on some dipsticks that don't know how to act in public; and that's not to say that every country doesn't have its share of douches who could give the wrong impression.

As for NPR's Daniel Snore:  How pathetic is it when a senile cocksucker has to constantly remind all his dipshit listeners as they're pulling their dessicated skullets (kudos to whoever came up with that) back that he was on Nixon's enemies list?  BFD; we have Il Douche mentioning Rush constantly and he doesn't go running for his binkie.  He says fuck that shit and just keeps blasting the pansy twat.  Snore went on to get fired by CBS for being an incompetent idiot until one of his glory-hole buds (probably Moyers) found a slot for him at NPR.  Sucks to not be able to hack it in the marketplace, Danny.

Posted by: Captain Hate at October 04, 2009 10:35 AM (Rrnzg)

84 Captain Hate, having lived in France, I tend to agree with you.  What's also true is that socialist countries such as France delaying the growing-up process compared to the USA (at least in our present, ruin-in-progress form).  So the political outlook of a 30 year-old in France is even more immature there than here; fortunately there are people over 30 in France.

By the way, a majority of people did elect Sarkozy, notwithstanding that France's MSM, as well as their young people, hate him.

Read a few blog posts this morning as to whether last night's SNL skit caused or is evidence of Obama no longer being a deity. Gee I hope so.

But just remember: the MSM called the Surge, and Iraq a failure, yet Obama is still our President.  So don't get your hopes up.

2010 elections closer every day;  lets keep our resolve to neuter Obama as much as possible!

43  Weirdest Local Gun Story Ever.  Anyone else think there might be a little more to the story?  I have to be careful not to quote the entire thing.

Only in Florida.  Whoever wrote that for WFTV doesn't seem to wonder how the hell a gun could just "go off" and shoot not one but multiple bullets.  I have a feeling someone or something was pulling the trigger.  Call it a hunch.

89 Ref the accident in Florida. I believe the gun went off in the husbands hand. The bullet went through his left hand, through his wife's left arm, and penetrated the shoulder and neck of the man in the stall to the left of the couple. It sounds like the husband was careless while racking the slide or explaining the operation of his cheap gun to his wife and he pointed it down the firing line to his left. An easy to picture accident requiring only one discharge and no mechanical failure, just poor range discipline with the gun not pointed downrange and the shooters finger on the trigger. Too common.
