"Well-Sourced Rumor:" Advocate of "Retreat Everywhere," Chuck Hagel, to Replace SecDef Gates By Year's End

No! Chuck Hagel? The pacifist left's favorite "Republican"?

There's no way that could be the plan. Because I know for a fact that Obama is was a kill-crazy super-trooper when it came to Afghanistan -- he told me so himself, and, like Superman, he never lies -- and there's no way he'd install a conveniently-Republican dove as his most important civilian military official.

Meanwhile Obama's deputy NSA has resigned in order to go back to the Navy, because he loves the Navy so much.

I don't doubt he loves the Navy. But presumably he loved the Navy before he accepted the job as Deputy NSA, too.

So why is he bailing on the position?

The speculation is obvious: McChrystal has threatened to resign, reportedly.

It could be that a lot of military folks willing to give Obama a chance are now running from the administration now that it is show its true color.

2 Bi-partisan pull-out, whether it's bi-partisan or not. Just like bi-partisan healthcare because they have Snowe.

Pretty much it in a nutshell.

6 Maybe the Obama team is more politically astute then we give them credit for?

Or maybe not, at the end of the day I don't think they will get the public to believe the Republicans went from super warmongers to conceiving of the retreat idea.  I have more faith in the electorate after the health care debate.

7 I've been wondering who will quit first; Gates or Clinton.

I'm thinking Clinton, because Gates might stick it out longer out of a sense of duty.

Posted by: forest at October 01, 2009 04:12 PM (RYaox)

8 At least Judd Gregg had the excuse of Obama claiming to be bipartisan when he tentatively accepted the job of Secretary of Commerce before backing out.

If Hagel's still willing to take the job after seeing the last 9 months of these idiots in charge, it confirms he's the gelded RINO we thought he was.

But it's all okay now:

The Daily Beast's Michael Adler reports that the "steps to build confidence" announced today are more concrete than Obama revealed. Iran has agreed to ship 1,200 pounds of enriched uranium to Russia to process for medical purposes.

President Obama’s statement about a confidence-building measure from Iran this afternoon left out the key detail: In a breakthrough agreement at talks in Geneva, Iran has agreed to send 1,200 kilograms of enriched uranium to Russia for further processing, two diplomats told the Daily Beast, noting this would mean Iran no longer has enough uranium to make a nuclear weapon.

And you are assuming that the Iranians are being truthful about their amount of enriched uranium. Another alternative is that Iran may be playing the Saddam bluff. We don't have, don't have the technology to do it, but lets play it out like we do and see where it gets us. Also, you have to start wondering what was promised to the Iranians to get this. Hagel served alongside his brother Tom as infantry squad leaders with the U.S. Army in Vietnam, earning numerous military decorations and honors, including two Purple Hearts.

There is no mention of whether he is currently in possession of a magical hat given to him by a Secret CIA Murder Death Kill Special Vector Force Ninja Recon Stealth Kill Death Team, while illegally floating down the Mekong River into Korea to kill Col. It could be that a lot of military folks willing to give Obama a chance are now running from the administration now that it is show its true color.

Frankly, no one ever had a reason to give The Precedent any chance, as it was all too obvious who and what he was.  We are hearing the same rumblings from the useful idiots who signed onto the administration on the monetary side.  But, Volker and the rest of the advisors (the ones who aren't lunatic leftists) did nothing but prove themselves stupid by ever allowing themselves to be co-opted by an anti-capitalist, Indonesian-type regime that never had any intention of trying to help America's dire monetary and economic problems.  I lost all respect for Volker the minute he allowed The Precedent to hide behind him, as is also true for anyone in the other fields who did the same.

For those who think Shrillary is going to jump ship, she blew it all with her moronic 'reset' button, which will stand as one of the stupidest and most incompetent acts of international diplomacy in all of human history.  Then, going along with the administration's insane support of Zelaya's attempted coup sealed her fate.  She will never be anything but a laughing stock for future history books - and that's if she's lucky.

But she will never run against Barry. It will be a cold day in Ted Kennedy's hell before any Demotard challenges Barry in any serious way. 2012 will have a fruitcake or two like Kucinich challenge him, but otherwise, forget about it.

The only way Barry doesn't run in 2012 is if he has a literal nervous breakdown... and even then, grave illness didn't stop Woodrow Wilson.

Well there is that, but the Clintons are the master of spin and they will try and spin both of those.

That would be some mighty tough spin.  I am with Orwell on the fact that the media machine wouldn't be totally in the bag for the Clintons on this, but even if they were, that red nuclear-type button and the ridiculous photo of Shrillary and Lavrov is going to live on forever.  It's just comedy gold, and running a State department unable to get an accurate translation of 'reset' hits most people pretty hard.  The fact that they stumbled onto 'overcharged' (as in 'about to blow') just added to the morbid laughs.

Judging from what we got for president I don't underestimate the stupidity of the American people anymore.

I can't argue with that.  After Nov 4th, I fear what the American public is capable of doing.  This ability of the American public to go totally insane on a moment's notice is Shrillary's one possibility.

Yeah, there's a point:

1. Iran ships material to Russia
2. Russia handles it in an unverifiable way and reprocesses it into weapons-grade plutonium
3. Russians slap "For Medical Use Only" labels on reprocessed plutonium.
4. Iran takes possession of it, swears up and down that it's for medical purposes only, ships Russia a wad of cash.

The glorious USSR withdrew from Afghanistan in humiliation and defeat.

It would not be proper or fair for the USSA to do otherwise!

85 The Obama administration's true color. Indeed. Or does it have more than one?

The dominoes are falling. The last one will be Obama himself. What do you want to bet he is:

1 - losing sleep

2 - losing weight

3 - smoking

4 - unable to get it up

5 - toying with the idea of faking Chronic Fatique Syndrome or something so he can claim he's resigning for medical reasons

Speaking of people bailing, did y'all see this one at Powerline? Geithner, Volcker, and those effete Wall Streeters who supported Obama are not liking what they see.

WTF?

Is it just me, or does his seeming commitment to have a nominal Republican in the position of Secretary of Defense imply that yes, he's fucking on Foreign Policy on purpose, and plans to have our asses invaded in 2 years and blaim it all on the him?

96 Chuck Hagel == Fig Leaf

I was told there'd be no math; nevertheless, this is one easy calculation.

Team Obama strokes the ego of a RINO, essentially a GOP candidate who could be vulnerable to the rising conservative momentum, and gives a) Hagel an escape hatch, and b) himself the next speedbump when Afghanistan falls under his watch. Hagel is expendable to Obama. We'll see if Hagel volunteers to be his useful idiot.
