Sarah Palin Takes Hong Kong

The WSJ got hold of the video, which had been closed to the press.

Allah notes Time has already begun the delegitimzing:

Palin-skeptics may, perhaps, enjoy Time’s write-up of the event, featuring snotty asides about her “rattling off financial terms of art” and “rambling” about the ancient land bridge that once joined Asia to Alaska.

Yes, "rambling" about the typical ice-breaking remarks about how "you and I are more connected than we think," and yes, it is very suspicious that this Aerial Lupine Assassin was capable of grasping anything about finance.

Hmmm... She seems to be trying out a campaign theme. See if you can spot it.

You can call me a common-sense conservative. My approach to the issues facing my country and the world, issues that we’ll discuss today, are rooted in this common-sense conservatism… Common sense conservatism deals with the reality of the world as it is. Complicated and beautiful, tragic and hopeful, we believe in the rights and the responsibilities and the inherent dignity of the individual.

We don’t believe that human nature is perfectible; we’re suspicious of government efforts to fix problems because often what it’s trying to fix is human nature, and that is impossible. It is what it is. But that doesn’t mean that we’re resigned to, well, any negative destiny. Not at all. I believe in striving for the ideal, but in realistic confines of human nature…

On Liberalism:

The opposite of a common-sense conservative is a liberalism that holds that there is no human problem that government can’t fix if only the right people are put in charge. Unfortunately, history and common sense are not on its side. We don’t trust utopian promises; we deal with human nature as it is.

...

On the Financial Crisis

Lack of government wasn’t the problem. Government policies were the problem. The marketplace didn’t fail. It became exactly as common sense would expect it to. The government ordered the loosening of lending standards. The Federal Reserve kept interest rates low. The government forced lending institutions to give loans to people who, as I say, couldn’t afford them. Speculators spotted new investment vehicles, jumped on board and rating agencies underestimated risks.

...

On deficits and Reaganism:

Common sense tells you that when you’re in a hole, you have to stop digging! A common sense conservative looks to history to find solutions to the problems confronting us, and the good news is that history has shown us a way out of this, a way forward from recession. Ronald Reagan, he was faced with an even worse recession, and he showed us how to get out of here.

If you want real job growth, you cut taxes! And you reduce marginal tax rates on all Americans. Cut payroll taxes, eliminate capital gain taxes and slay the death tax, once and for all. Get federal spending under control, and then you step back and you watch the U.S. economy roar back to life. But it takes more courage for a politician to step back and let the free market correct itself than it does to push through panicky solutions or quick fixes…

I can’t wait until we get that Reaganomics sense supplied again because we are going to survive, and we’re going to thrive and expand and roar back to life. And as the world sees this, the world will be a healthier, more secure, safer and more prosperous place when this happens.
...

On health care:

I seem to have acquired notoriety in national debate. And all because of two words: death panels. And it is a serious term. It was intended to sound a warning about the rationing that is sure to follow if big government tries to simultaneously increase health care coverage while also claiming to decrease costs. Government has just got to be honest with the people about this….

As I said, it’s just common sense to realize that government’s attempts to solve large problems like the health-care challenges that we have, more often create new ones, and a top down one size fits all plan will not improve the workings of a nationwide health-care system that accounts for some one-fifth of our economy.

Common sense also tells us that passing a trillion dollar new retirement program, that’s not the way to reduce health-care spending. Real health-care reform is market oriented, patient centered and result driven. It would give all individuals the same tax benefit, that an ideal plan that I would have in mind, same tax benefits as those who get coverage through their employers. And give Medicare recipients vouchers so that they can buy their own coverage. And reform tort laws and change regulations to allow people to buy insurance across state lines. Rather than another top down government plan, we should give Americans themselves control over their own health care with market friendly responsible ideas.

I'm not being snarky about the campaign theme -- every campaign needs one and every campaign has one. She's obviously picked hers. Works, I think.

More excerpts at the WSJ, and at Allah's link. He has video, too, which I left behind, because I'm stealing the WSJ stuff.

"It was fairly right-wing populist stuff,' one US delegate said.

Palin blasted Obama's proposals on healthcare, reiterating a previous statement made to the press that the plan would include a bureaucratic "death panel" that would decide who gets assistance, he said.

Another from the United States said: "She frightens me because she strikes a chord with a certain segment of the population and I don't like it."

Hey, they left out the rest of 'another's' quote:  "She frightens me because she strikes a chord with a certain segment of the population and I don't like it, but at the same time I am strangely excited and drawn to this sexy, strong, dynamic woman."

9 But as the foreign press flapped about Palin (and the lack of access to her), few in the local Cantonese media — or most Hong Kongers, in general — seemed to care. Few representatives from Hong Kong's tabloid-driven press stood in the forlorn journalist pen outside the hotel. Shown a picture of Palin, a woman surnamed Ng, who operated a food stand near the Grand Hyatt, professed to not know who she was. "If she is rich and famous, then maybe she goes shopping nearby," said Ng from behind her counter. "Afterward, she can come eat my fishballs."

from Time. Dumbest paragraph I've seen in a long time. Are they really called Hong Kongers???

Palin-skeptics may, perhaps, enjoy Time’s write-up of the event, featuring snotty asides about her “rattling off financial terms of art

Did that include the dreaded "profit and earnings ratios", that our imbecilic Precedent introduced to the world as he was trying to demonstrate his difficulty handling mathematical concepts that any 8th grader understands?  I bet Time never had much to say about that.

In related news, The Precedent went on to talk about highway speed limits, stating that '65 minutes and hours' should be an acceptable speed to everyone.

Yeah, Palin spouted a lot of meaningless claptrap like this:  "In an era when our destiny is shared, power is no longer a zero-sum game. Blah blah blah interconnected blah blah balance of power blah blah the interests of nations and peoples are shared..."

Oh wait.  That was from Obozo's speech at the UN.

14 I'm sure that Sarah Palin doesn't have that firm grasp of economics that Barack Obama has.  Sure, we've never seen his transcripts, but it is obvious what with his invoking of Keynes and other 80+-year-old theories that have a poor track record of success that Barack Obama has the kind of expertise that has given us the sub-8% unemployment we're enjoying now.  (With a 25% margin of error, of course.)

I am eager to see the video in its entirety and compare Sarah's speech to a certain other recent speech in front of an international audience.  I don't think it will be difficult to discern which speech is a serious assessment of international relations and international finance and which one is a complete embarrassment.

For fun, let's compare the number of times each one ends a gerund with -in' instead of -ing.  Palin got mocked incessantly for that and yet it's a verbal tic that infests Obama's speech, with or without TOTUS.

Hi again, its me, Honest Cloud. Now, as we continue our lessons on trolling, here is a very important thing to remember. On the internet, you can be anyone you want to be. That is helpful, because at some point, the 2 basic plays of trolling, being snarky and smug, and then reordering your verbage to make your original snarky and smug comment look different, may get old. Well, for you, for me, it works everytime.  Here is a great example:

I have made over 40 trips to Hong Kong and have many dear friends over there. I have also stayed and visited the Hyatt where Plain spoke.

I, like my Hong Kong friends and business contacts, am sorely disappointed that they invited such an idiot to speak.

And rumor has it that many walked out due to Palin's moronic speech.

I'll update as soon as I hear back from my friends wife who was planning to attend.

See, there is no way to verify any of this. I just made it up. Later, I can make up a confirmation that my friends wife called and said everyone (or nearly everyone - got to make it somewhat believable) walked out and everyone said she was an idiot and it was a horrible speech and her outfit was bad.  So even if someone with a small shred of credibility, like the New York Time, actually runs an article saying that most of the people there were impressed by her speech, it doesn't matter, because my friends wife was there. See, the internet lets you make stuff up without any possibility of being proven wrong. Remember what I said yesterday, you don't need facts and logic. Well, that is all for now, keep up the trolling.  I am going to Hong Kong tonight with a super model on a Leer Jet.

Hi again, its me, Honest Cloud. Thanks to the grant from the NEA, I can continue to make these wonderful educational films on how to be a good troll. And thanks to the fine folks at ACCORN, I can keep most of the money and not pay taxes. But, just like our President, it isn't about me - this is about you, the wanna-be troll.  Now, every once in awhile, you will say something that someone may remember.  Remember earlier when I said I had a wifes friend in Hong Kong who went to the Sarah speech and she was gonna give me an update on it. Yea, I know, completely unverifiable, but someone remembered and called me on it. In that case, all you do is make up an excuse. Try this one:

Nope. They are sleeping now you dumbfuck. You know different times zones and all.

But I will be speaking with them tonight. I'll let you know.

See, I put if off. Also, did you note the use of profanity there. Remember, when engaged in  an argument, curse alot, it tells people you are super smart and serious.

Then later, when everyone has forgotten it, I can slip in a post about my wife's friend and presto chango, I have kept my credibility.  See, how smart I am.  So remember, on the internet, you can be anybody you want. And you can make up any excuse you want.  Thank you, Al Gore, for inventing the internet.  That is all.

On Liberalism:

The opposite of a common-sense conservative is a liberalism that holds that there is no human problem that government can’t fix if only the right people are put in charge. Unfortunately, history and common sense are not on its side. We don’t trust utopian promises; we deal with human nature as it is.

112 I believe unions have a valuable place in American society, but they need to adapt to the realities of today, not remain mired in the slogans of the 1930s.

They've actually legislated themselves into irrelevance.  Overtime pay, health care, safety regulations, etc. were all perks of being in a union.  Now they're legislated and there's no reason to be in a union, other than to not have a job because the union will not give in to lower salary demands.

154 OK, forgive me if someone's already said this (I don't have time to read through the comments right now...cooking dinner), but "Common-Sense Conservative" was Fred Thompson's thing during the primaries.

I've suspected for a while that he may be advising her, as he and his wife talk about her on their radio show on a very regular basis. And Jeri Thompson started a website for women who supported Palin and has been on numerous shows defending here.

This slogan- if I may use that term- kind of confirms those suspicions for me. And if it's true, that's one hell of a mentor to have! I love me some Fred.

Dude.. Like it's been explained to you before over at Hot Air, it needs to be explained to you here. Damned if I don't have puppets to help you follow along too.

What Palin did was well within rights of the Alaskan state constitution. The Alaskan State Constitution explains that the people (residents of that state) own the mineral rights that are mined.

Like a farmer with an oil derrick in the middle of a cornfield. He's getting a cut of the oil because he owns the land.

It's a 10th amendment thing.

What Palin did was pay out to the citizens of Alaska their dividend check.

That's how that happened. If you don't like it.. well.. You can always head over to LGF.

Why didn't she practice what she preached when she governed Alaska? She expanded the size of government while increasing taxes. Now the state is looking at deficits with revenues plummeting. She's a populist not a fiscal conservative".

So she grew the government while the total reduction in spending between 2007 and 2010: a whopping 9.5% or $1,127,400,000. Works for me! But as for increasing taxes don't get me started on that crook Mark Begich and my property taxes. Fortunately he'll be a one term Senator and we have a new fiscally conservative mayor. As for deficits and plummeting revenue? I'm not worried, as long as we can keep the dems away from the pursestrings and let Alaskan business do what it's suppose to do you won't see what's happening in every other state happening here. I'm usually very civil on this blog but I'm gonna have to say that you're a negative nellie and a Palin hater that is just stupid.

Fool doesn't under the difference between a capital and an operating budget. ACES, the name of this tax scheme, was able to generate enough reserves, that the state is able to weather the storm of the recession, more than most, Under her stewardship, Exxon was actually forced to drill new well at Pt. 188 Fool doesn't under the difference between a capital and an operating budget. Thompson, and the AGIA line in on track, with the TC/Exxon deal. Now do you have any argument with any of the policies she outlined, and the reasons for our current economic crisis,

How many things can you get wrong in one comment? The operating budget is the budget she massively expanded. this is the bureaucracy of government. It does nothing for the benefit of the people. The capitol budget on the other hand is in the conservative world, the good budget. The part of the budget that improves infrastructure to promote capitalism, the budget she cut.
ACES did not generate the revenue "to weather the storm", $150.00 a barrel of oil gave the state a one year reprieve. ACES did help deter any investment by the producers on state land. which is already resulting in lower revenue and less jobs for the state. This is what tax increases do.
As for forcing EXXON to drill at Pt. Thompson, Palin had nothing to do with it, leases signed long before Palin entered the fray required EXXON to drill. She tried to force them into court to take back the leases, quite the opposite of what you're trying to sell. Only reason she dropped the state lawsuit to revoke the leases was because she was about to get her ass handed to her in court.
And last but not least AGIA is not on track, it can only fail. That's because it was a crappy populist piece of legislation forcing the producer out of the process. You know the producers, the ones that will actually have to pay for it. AGIA is just the opposite of what conservatism should endorse, nothing more then vilifying big business with government intrusion.

The Federal Government owns 70% of the state, and they have locked it up from development. Much of it is cold forbidding terrain, for half of the year much like Siberia to the West. Yet even the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Obama Interior Department, the one she wrote the op ed to the New York Times that Katie Couric had missed in her extensive review of her career, has yielded to her office's arguments. If we could help it, I'd rather not pay for $4-5 a gallon gas to Venezuela, the Saudis or Russia, if we could even find a portion of that oil here. I have no fear for the Divine Mrs. Palin.

I have some fears, and I hope that her security detail is a whole bunch of retired 'Old SEALS' with bad attitudes, and unlimited arsenals. We are watching both Those Who Are No Longer Our Countrymen, and the Institutional Republicans attacking her ceaselessly. And she is shrugging them off, and getting stronger. She is a threat to both of them. Eventually, given that there is no credible legal restraint on the actions of either, they are going to try something more violent and permanent. If they try, and especially if they succeed ....

222 Hey, Honest Clud, let me give you a little tutorial in marketing:

When something says "limited time", it usually sells out and more product is developed.

Gov. Palin did not allow media to be at the actual meeting. Means that she would get the most publicity, due to the scarcity.

1+1 = 2.

224 HC....Palin uses Facebook to bypass the self proclaimed arbiters of news and information to speak directly to the people.

Palin closed this session to the media to ensure that the facts about her speech would be based on the speech itself...the content...and also to continue what seems to be a working strategy of making her a rare commodity...thus increasing the buzz when she does something publicly.

It's called savvy.
