Obama Is Rewriting (Recent) History On Afghanistan

I'm not as sanguine that more troops means victory is possible in Afghanistan as some are but I think it's important we all deal with the same set of facts.

When it comes to the recent dust up over General McChrystal's request for more troops, Obama is being disingenuous. Some, myself included, might even go so far as to say he's lying.

On his tour of the Sunday shows the President says he won't commit to more troops until there's a strategy in place.

"The only thing I've said to my folks is, 'A, I want an unvarnished assessment, but, B, I don't want to put the resource question before the strategy question,'" Obama said. "Because there is a natural inclination to say, 'If I get more, then I can do more.'"

(emphasis mine)

Here's the thing, Obama supposedly answered the strategy question back in March

According to Secretary of Defense Gates, Gen. McChrystal's appointment was the direct result of that new strategy.

“I believe that our mission [in Afghanistan] requires new thinking and new approaches from our military leaders,” Gates told reporters. “Today, we have a new policy set by our new president. We have a new strategy, a new mission and a new ambassador. I believe that new military leadership is needed.”

Now Obama and his minions seem to be saying there's some sort of review of the strategy due after the Afghan elections. Funny but Obama said nothing about that when he introduced his new strategy back in the spring.

Even if he always meant to do that, it's silly.

Look at the time line. He announces his strategy in March, there's a new military commander named to carry out that strategy in May (though he didn't even get on station until mid June). So Obama is saying he did this top down rethink of a seven year old war and he's giving that strategy essentially 3 months to play out before he considers abandoning it? 6 months if you start from the day it was announced, not when the new military commander took over.

That's simply ridiculous on its face.

McChrystal's report (pdf) was about how to implement and resource the new strategy, not whether or not is was working.

For Obama to pretend he's not holding back on resourcing the effort is simply a lie.

(Credit where it's due...I heard some of this mentioned before but I couldn't remember where. This Corner entry reminds me it was Charles Krauthammer on FNC last night who started the ball rolling in my mind).

5 Can we please get Hillary in on this action as well? I mean, just to put to bed the misconception that she's more macho and hawkish than Obama, or that she's got the balls to stand up to him on this clusterf*ck of a policy review?

Clinton rebuffs general's warning on Afghanistan

NEW YORK (AFP) – US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton pushed back against the US military's blunt warning that the battle against insurgents in Afghanistan would likely be lost within a year without more US troops.

Clinton's comments in an interview with PBS television late Monday came amid reports that the Pentagon has asked General Stanley McChrystal, the top commander in Afghanistan, to delay a request for more troops.

Clinton expressed "respect" for McChrystal's assessment that the United States would likely lose the war in Afghanistan within a year without more US forces.

"But I can only tell you there are other assessments from very expert military analysts who have worked in counter-insurgencies that are the exact opposite," she said.

Her remarks were the latest sign of stiffening resistance within President Barack Obama's administration to a major escalation in the US commitment in Afghanistan, and a growing rift over the issue between civilian leaders and the military.

Hillary's advise is from liberal think tank gnomes who parrot the democrat party line.  She is unwilling to accept McCrystal's analysis because it's at variance with  Obama rhetoric.  McCrystal is an American patriot whereas Hillary speaks liberal talking points in an attempt to preserve the liberal voting base.

You are correct sir, it's not a pick from either column A or B, but what's best for America.  But, with Obama and Hillary, it's about what retains the liberal voting base without alienating all others.  It's a tall order to be a vote conscience dweeb instead of an American first, but both Obama and Hillary manage quite well.

53 The war phases of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars should have been concluded long ago. Unfortunately we then decided we had to build democracies to serve as shining lights unto the Muslims, and to give us military footholds in the region. Noble ideas, but in practice, impossible. We will never turn these people into anything other than what they are. Even when Iraq was a more secular society, sectarian violence simmered below the surface and it took a tyrant like Saddam to keep the country together. Even when Afghanistan was a more secular society (before the Soviets came) Taliban tendencies lay not far below the surface.

We should pull the troops out now so no more American military will die. Both places will eventually deteriorate into Islamic Sharia states, but we can't prevent that. The best we can do is keep them under observation, and go in periodically and beat them senseless when they come close to causing trouble again or try to harbor terrorists. Just as in the case of Haiti, we're doomed to get involved every few years and impose adult supervision, but short of killing them all, that's all we can realistically do.

President Obama, you hold the title of Commander-in-Chief. You declared your Afghanistan 'policy' in March of this year. You then appointed a new Commander to execute that policy.

It’s now become quite apparent that you’ve given less than the minimal amount of thought necessary to manage a critical combat theater. Given that YOU declared this AO to be THE BATTLE THAT MUST WON, your ‘lapse’ is indefensible. Given that this task is your Constitutional responsibility, you’ve succeeded in compounding that failure.

Your only options are:

[A] Lead

[B] Resign

There is no third option.

Fulfill your duty or be damned be those who did.

69 Bummer, dead thread...

The problem in "Af-ghan-ee-stan" (phonetically correct Obama style), like any other war conflict, is the right number of men to do the job of knocking the king off his throne. One could use the brute force of annihilation by millions of infantry to get the job done, or your average 'A' Team or CIA Dirty Ops could kick the 'King' to the curb.

In Af-ghan-ee-stan it was found a few Special Ops, their big tail, and the Northern Alliance could knock Mullah Omar off his throne. Not so much a war as a conflict with the current despot. And enough regulars to minimally support Omar's successor.

Imagine if W. went with an 'A' Team to hit Omar, they obviously would not be trying to play Federal Marshall over the whole shiitehole, they would have pulled it. Conversely, if W. went with the million(s) man invasion and occupation, we would not be talking about this either.

Time is past when the question was "How few", but to "how many" to suppress.

A skillful General can always defeat the enemy's king and government with fewer troops than it takes to subdue the enemy. The enemy has not been subdued.

Last weekend, I ordered chocolate Ugg Classic Cardy hoping they wouldn't show marks as much as my beige ugg cardy boots and waterproofed them when I first got them. They look so much cleaner than my old beige ugg boots, I wear my Whooga's all year round, they don't make my feet sweat as much as my older pair. I'm very impressed with how they are holding up to my abuse, very well made. My only suggestion to everyone is keep them dry and out of the mud.Ugg Classic Cardy!
