DC Mobbed- reports from MK Ham & Uncle J

Yesterday was an amazing show of force, without any force employed. Hundreds of thousands of folks showed up to let the President & Congress know that they weren't real thrilled about trillions of dollars flying out of the Treasury to all kinds of liberal causes. 9 months ago the Obama love was out of control and they went overboard. Well the people aren't happy about owning GM, or billions going to ACORN, or the idea of socialized medicine. 2010 is completely in play and if I was a Democrat, I'd be a little worried. Here is MK Ham and me and some perfectly ironic music, I think.

Wow, that is awesome.  I heard the "official estimate" was like 600,000 on
Beck.  That looked like more than a million to me.  If the Democrats ignore this and try to cram nationalized healthcare down our throats, they do so at their own peril.  I went to my little local tea party out in Redmond, WA.  We got there late as it was winding down cause my husband and I had to run a 20 miler first.  There was a 90 year old man there holding up a sign.  On one side it said "I am not a clunker" and the other side said "I'm 90 years old, let me live!"  We got a lot of positive honking and thumbs up, but there were also people who were pissed off and giving us the finger (driving very nice cars, I might add!)   Anyways, I am so proud of America!  OK, gotta run and go to church--D'nesh D'Souza is speaking this a.m.

9 Good job Jimbo.

O/T, a bunch of prominent politicos (including Sarah Palin, Bill Kristol, Ryan Crocker, and even David Frum) are taking your side on Afghanistan:

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
The White House
Washington, DC

Dear Mr. President:

The situation in Afghanistan is grave and deteriorating. This is in part the legacy of an under resourced war effort that has cost us and the Afghans dearly. The Taliban has retaken important parts of the country, while a flawed U.S. strategy has led American forces into secondary efforts far away from critical areas. However, we remain convinced that the fight against the Taliban is winnable, and it is in the vital national security interest of the United States to win it.

You’ve called Afghanistan an "international security challenge of the highest order, " and stated that "the safety of people around the world is at stake." Last month you told a convention of veterans, “Those who attacked America on 9/11 are plotting to do so again. If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans. So this is not only a war worth fighting. This is fundamental to the defense of our people.”

We fully agree with those sentiments. We congratulate you on the leadership you demonstrated earlier this year when you decided to deploy approximately 21,000 additional troops and several thousand civilian experts as a part of a serious counterinsurgency campaign. Your appointments of General Stanley McChrystal as top commander and David Rodriguez as second in command in Afghanistan exemplified the seriousness of purpose you spoke about during the campaign. We are heartened to see that the much needed overhaul of our military operations has begun.

Since the announcement of your administration’s new strategy, we have been troubled by calls for a drawdown of American forces in Afghanistan and a growing sense of defeatism about the war. With General McChrystal expected to request additional troops later this month, we urge you to continue on the path you have taken thus far and give our commanders on the ground the forces they need to implement a successful counterinsurgency strategy. There is no middle course. Incrementally committing fewer troops than required would be a grave mistake and may well lead to American defeat. We will not support half-measures that repeat the errors of the past.

This is, as you have said, a war that we cannot afford to lose. Failure to defeat the Taliban would likely lead to a return of al Qaeda to Afghanistan and could result in terrorist attacks on the United States or our allies. An abandonment of Afghanistan would further destabilize the region, and put neighboring Pakistan and its nuclear arsenal at risk. All our efforts to support Islamabad’s fight against the Taliban in Pakistan’s tribal regions will founder if we do not match those achievements on the other side of that country’s porous northwestern border.

As you observed during the 2008 U.S. presidential campaign, “You don't muddle through the central front on terror and you don't muddle through going after bin Laden. You don't muddle through stamping out the Taliban.” We completely agree. Having “muddled through” in Afghanistan for years, this is no longer a politically, strategically, or morally sustainable approach.

Mr. President, you have put in place the military leadership and sent the initial resources required to begin bringing this war to a successful conclusion. The military leadership has devised a strategy that will reverse the errors of previous years, free Afghans from the chains of tyranny, and keep America safe. We call on you to fully resource this effort, do everything possible to minimize the risk of failure, and to devote the necessary time to explain, soberly and comprehensively, to the American people the stakes in Afghanistan, the route to success, and the cost of defeat.

With the continued bravery of our troops, and your continued full support for them and their command team, America and our allies can and will prevail in Afghanistan.

10 One thing I find interesting about yesterday, and recent events is that they may be signaling the end of political parties as we know/knew them; the opposition to Obama is not being driven by the Republican Party; the GOP is, at best, an adjunct to the opposition; this is what the Internet, talk radio, and Twitter have wrought,

And this is a good thing.  It means that certain clueless politicians are about to be run over by a truck they barely saw coming.

I can hear Inigo Montoya saying to the MSM: "I do not think this word 'thousands' means what you think it means."

Another O/T: for all you haters out there, Obama is keeping another campaign promise.

Barack Obama starts US talks with 'axis of evil': North Korea and Iran

President Barack Obama has approved plans for the US to start direct talks with both North Korea and Iran, in a significant shift in policy.

The State Department said it would meet one-to-one with Pyongyang negotiators in an effort to persuade the reclusive Stalinist state to return to multilateral talks on dismantling its nuclear weapons programme.

Washington has also accepted a vague Iranian offer of talks on broad national security issues, even though Tehran refused to discuss its illicit atomic operations.

The US insisted it would raise Iranian’s nuclear activities in the meeting. "This may not have been a topic that they wanted to be brought up but I can assure that it's a topic that we'll bring up," said White House spokesman Robert Gibbs.

Posted by: ErikW at September 13, 2009 02:19 PM (hKtiw)

22 First...just noticing how the music in the video is from Rage Against the Machine (no longer a band), a very radical left wing band who disagreed with anything that had to do with the right, even though they basically espoused being anti government just like the Tea Parties. The irony.

I would also like to tell everyone that we need to stop talking about the "main stream" media, the "elite" media, the "legacy" media and whatever else we call them. Why do we continue to give them voice? They do not get the ratings in any media form so obviously they don't have the viewership/readers so who gives a flying eff what they say or do? IGNORE them and they will go away. The more we give them voice by disagreeing and getting pissed off that they don't cover these events the more they will do it, the more they will feel empowered to do it, and the more they will feel like they have control. They don't. Blogs and online 24 second news sites (as opposed to 24 hour) are the new "elite." I know the blogs must have an enemy to gauge themselves against but still when we acknowledge their stories or arguments as legitimate they win. The best thing we have against these "elite" media and left wing blogs is the fact that most right/indy blogs out argue them. Which is why they love to do emotional appeal/ad hominem type arguments, they simply cant out argue. So ignore them, we know the truth, we know the true numbers, spread the truth.

We fell for this with the 2008 election. The news didn't cover Palin's huge gatherings of 10 to 20 thousand people, they reported low crowds, how she wasnt pulling the people or the votes...and people fell for it and I believe they eventually thought that she and McCain were not going to win and maybe decided that it was futile to vote. But if they had known the truth they would have felt emboldened to go out and vote and maybe we wouldn't be here trying to march on Washington. The "main stream" are now doing it again, downplaying the truth...I hope we are now smarter to know that we shouldn't take them seriously. This will happen in 2010 also, don't believe it. Ignore them. They will go away. I mean who watches CNN anyways?

I'm pasting this from C4P:

This is on Race42012:
http://tinyurl.com/lwpupz

Sarah Palin was without a doubt the unsaid queen of the 9/12 March. Of the many people I interviewed, about a dozen expressed solid support for a Palin candidacy, with all of the others at least open to supporting her.

Many were caught up in the fervor of Joe Wilson’s recent outburst. At moments, it seemed as if every other person was holding a “You Lie” sign. Joe Wilson, indeed, was a name I heard with much greater frequency than Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee (whose name crossed no one’s lips), and Tim Pawlenty. Floated names did include, however, Michele Bachmann, Mitt Romney, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck. But these were not serious propositions.

“All eyes are on Sarah Palin,” a man said. “Without her, McCain would have lost in a landslide.”

“Palin is from outside the Beltway. They hate her down here in D.C., and that’s why we need her,” one woman said to me.

“Quitting as governor was so smart,” another man said. “She got her leg out of a political beartrap. They were trying to sink her up in Alaska.”

Palin for President pins, shirts, and even signs were constant. Truly, she is their woman. And it’s hard to see that changing. Among those with whom I spoke who were committed to a candidate, she was the only name.who came up. Her anti-Washington credibility overwhelmed them.

“She has ethics and moral values, she’s pro-life, she knows what she stands for and she speaks with integrity.” She’s one of them.

24 They sort of had no clue, they thought the growing numbers of independents was a good thing, thinking we could be promised anything and tow the line.  What they did not mean is that independents are just that, independent and, as such, we vote not based on party loyalty or affiliation.  Sure, do we miss the perks that come with being a party insider, yeah but we keep our dignity in tact.  Heard from a few libs that "it was a bunch of old people who can't get used to an African American prez and went down to DC to whine about it, en masse.  No biggie, the prez told the folks at Target center, the true Americans, the bill is going through no matter what those folks in DC think they can do.  it's all good".   Can't tell you how many times I heard that yesterday.  It seems to have made no impression on them.  They say the bill will pass this week without any republican input.

Yes, I've been saying something similar for months -- the paradigm is changing.

As of today, I'm not particularly worried about the Democrats "going it alone" on healthcare; if it isn't bluster, which I suspect it is, it's an act of self-immolation as it is bound to have long-term consequences which ripple out for decades.

We are not in the Obama Era -- that was a silly MSM meme, as was "we are all socialists."

We are in the Army of Davids era, and if the MSM and the major political parties do not recognize it, their demise will be even quicker than it would have been otherwise.  We are inside their OODA loop.

Where to get a reliable and honest "official" estimate of the crowd?  This "no crowd estimate was made" meme morphed into "D.C. Fire Department (!) estimates 60-70,000. I know that's B.S.  I used to live in the D.C. area and (1) the govt. routinely estimated the size of crowds downtown and (2) the overhead pictures indicate, I would say from experience, half a million as a bare minimum.

Fire department estimates? WTF? A buch of nice union jobs in a notoriously corrupt city that's a Democrat plantation. Oh yeah, I'm going to believe them.

Leftist boneheads are seizing on the erroneous attributing of a 2 million estimate to ABC.

No newspaper has said more than tens of thousands - that's what we've heard from the Washington Post, for example. Any D.C.-based reporter would know this is pure, bogus spin. Why can't these people do something creative and different for once, like do their jobs, for example.

Michele Malkin has some good info.

Based on the USA Today graphic and the pictures I've seen of the 9/12 crowd, I'd say 1.2 million is a fair estimate.

The Park Service stopped estimating crowds after the Million Man March but resumed it for Jug Ear's inauguration. I don't know if they made an estimate for yesterday's rally.

Watch the speech from yesterday.  He knew there were over a million people in DC who are not in favor of any of this and he still spoke the way he did with the tone he had.  The MSM has couched this as "a defining moment in his presidency".  He is going to pass a bill and he is going to leave a lot of leeway so that he gets his death panels and his public option and perhaps control by the government of the entire health care industry.  Ask yourself "did you think GM would end up like this?  Fannie?  freddie?  medicare?  medicade?  social security?  Yesterday was a real "let them eat cake" moment and the people who came out don't even realize it.  They don't see the steamroller coming.  If you go by passed behavior, it doesn't matter what the American people think as the congress and the prez think they know better and they are out to prove it.  Look how Gibsey set the tone yesterday.  What?  something going on here?  no, the prez is going to MN to give a speech at the Target center to paid participants, that is what is important.  Libs have actually said "once all those old people are dead and gone, we can really change this country".  That is scary if you ask me.

If the Fire department reported 1.2 million, would it have been dismissed as well i wonder?

Mars, The Washington Post says the D.C. Fire Department doesn't report crowd estimates (see 60).  So your claim that it did is bogus, unless and until you can point to the name of the DCFD official who made the announcement.

Here's a timelapse you dumbfuck. You'll notice the National Mall is full. The National Park Service says that the National Mall holds 946,000 and the area directly in front of the Capitol holds 240,000. That's 1,186,00 people.
LOL, you're so pwn3d.

Go get your fuckin' shinebox bitch

That time lapse is actually of Pennsylvania Ave right?

I would calculate it by noting that the sidewalk capacity alone is 300,000 per security experts quoted by the Washington Post for Obama's inauguration. The street is much wider and though people were moving, rather than stationary and therefore more densely packed, that movement seems to have continued long enough to compensate for the difference in density. Therefore, IMO at least 1 million is reasonable.

66 har, yes I did methos, it was dismissed out of hand with no factual basis.

It's not a fact that DC firemen are unionized?

Why exactly would the fire departments be counting crowds, anyway.  Police have to keep the peace, so they have to have their heads wrapped around the situation, so they'd be expected to count.  Whoever supplied the port-a-potties (who is responsible for keeping the pee) should also be aware what the plans were for and how much they were off by.  I'm sure there are other "agencies" in DC who'd want to know the size of a crowd sitting on the capital.

But the fire department?

Fire departments in general don't give a damn about crowd size unless it's in a building or enclosed space.

D.C. Fire wouldn't waste time and resources trying to figure out crowd numbers.

Trust me, they have other things to worry about.

Yeah, I see why people keep worrying about that.  It's obviously necessary to keep the pressure on.  But bear in mind that this is the Democrat party we're talking about here.  They aren't exactly bastions of courage.  I think for all the talk there will be no bill of any kind.  My only question is whether Pelosi takes the extra step of holding a vote, under some delusion she has the votes-or playing chicken with her caucus-or whether it just all fizzles out under its own weight.

46 They say the bill will pass this week without any republican input.

Curious, if they do that, there could be a revolution, for real.

Just a few snippets to consider.

Shannon Breem was interviewing some Ky. Dem this afternoon and was asked about the "going it alone" option.  He admitted there was at most one or two Repubs who might vote for it, but that they would go it alone --  because "we have to vote for what's best for the country."  Funny, I thought being a "representative" meant you represented your constituents.

I've heard Boehner (I think) say that if the Dems try to go nuclear with the "51" vote, that Repubs can make life a living hell for the House, in that every bill will be read word for word on the floor from hereon out.  Is that true?

Even though the thought is "let 'em pass it and get voted out," and ""we'll have plenty of time to roll it back since it doesn't go into effect till 2013," Rush and others pundits have said once this thing is law, everything is set in motion to totally revamp, i.e., destroy our healthcare system.

The wife and I just got back home to Ohio from the 9/12 DC Tea-Party.  Rather than try to find a parking space in DC, we rode the Metro subway in from New Carrollton.  The subway was so crowded when we got off, the Transit cops just opened the turn-stile and told the crowd to just forget about using their tickets.  I talked to a Transit cop and he told me that it was a mandatory work day and they were all on duty!

We got in to DC at about 10:30AM.  We were at Pennsylvania & 13th and it was a sea of humanity as far as the eye could see!  One of the volunteers told me that Pennsylania Ave had already been closed for about two hours and the crowd was so huge that the march on the Capitol started early.  Pennsylvania Ave was shut down for about four hours total.

The DC cops were present but bored.  The crowd was very orderly and well-behaved.  The wife and I got to the Capitol by about 12 Noon.  The entire area was packed and people kept streaming in for hours.

I spoke to some of the volunteer staff and they were stunned by the turn-out.  They were hoping in their wildest dreams to get about 500,000.  The crowd was way larger than they planned for.

90 What's really amazing is that the lefty press can take some liberal protest of 5 aging hippies and turn it into thousands of people and take yesterday's event and reduce hundreds of thousands to tens of thousands. Great job to everyone who attended regardless of what the asswipe media reports.

Posted by: TheQuietMan at September 13, 2009 07:10 PM (GUccg)

91 quietman, you must be joking. the protests in opposition to the war in iraq set the guiness record. Rome alone had 3 million protesters. The event was worldwide Many people attending were young, not "aging hippies". Kind of an ironic comment I might add, considering the average age of the "tea party" set. Certainly there have been many smaller protests, but none of them covered as well as Terri Shiavo, and that had a little over 100 at best.

I think you guys should honestly feel good about the turnout even if it isn't 2 million, as Malkin reported. Conservatives appear to be really taking their shot at protesting. welcome to particapatory democracy. I think its good for the country.

Imagine so many delusional people getting organized to block of all things, expanding health care in this country. The insurance companies that bilk us all must love you guys. Imagine actually believing that obama is some kind of nazi/communist for offering pretty watered down industry-centric policy changes. its truly baffling to sane people everywhere.

Left and right, war supporters dominated coverage leading up to the war. it wasn't even close. except for donahue (who naturally, was canned even with high ratings) I can't think of a single pundit who received decent air time. Possibly Cindy Sheehan, but she was roundly derided, and rightly so. You guys should be in love with the msm, they have covered the "Tea party" events considerably.
