They Really Are Afraid of Palin: WH Talking Points Single Out Palin and No Other Republican

White House talking points blast Palin in run-up to Obama's third failed speech.

A source sends on the talking points the White House is circulating to allies in advance of President Obama's speech, most of them reiterating familiar themes of momentum and security.

But the White House has also chosen specifically to focus on former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, and evidently to make her the face of the opposition, or to respond to her ability to project herself into the debate. She is the only Republican named in the talking points.

In closely related news: Lefties praise Palin's WSJ editorial, indirectly, by caterwauling she didn't write it; and Marc Ambinder pleads with the MSM not to give Palin any exposure.

By the way, he concedes that Barack "Rara Avis" Obama didn't write his editorials. But, see, it's different and stuff.

The media -- by which I mean the cable news networks, primarily -- will determine whether Palin's view on health care becomes influential. There are many Republican, conservative health care spokespeople who have earned the right to speak for their party's principals, and, truth be told, can recite the talking points (complete with Ronald Reagan quote) better than Palin and her writer can. They're the ones who should be offended if Palin's op-ed becomes the voice of the opposition tomorrow....

Awww, he's worried about the Republican Party.

So here's a challenge to the media: if you want to do justice to conservative ideas and find some balance in your coverage tomorrow, book serious Republicans with original ideas on your programs. If you don't, Palin is giving herself a voice at your expense and through little effort of her own.

By implying, incidentally, that Palin gets help from a speechwriter, I mean to make an observation. Barack Obama didn't draft his op-ed, either. But, reading Obama, it's not a leap to believe that the ideas are truly his. Palin has no chops and no experience talking about health care and isn't participating in this debate; the content of her op-ed piece isn't original, and the points are points that Republicans make every day.

Palin was an early adopter of one of the most effective lines of attack, Bub. Indeed, before she adopted it, barely anyone was talking about.

This notion that only the actual originator of an idea can push it is bizarre. First I've heard of such a thing -- were it the rule, only one dude could speak out on any idea.

But of course the rules are different for Palin.

This is the reality. Palin has policy credibility problems. Big ones. A few op-eds aren't going to help her. But if the media treats her as as a legitimate and influential voice today, she won't need to do the hard work that will result in her learning more about policy and actually becoming conversant in the issues that she, as a potential presidential candidate, will deal with.

Ah, he's concerned about Palin, too. He's trying to help her, you see, by forcing her to do that "hard work."

Concern troll.

By the way, Ambinder is almost certainly parroting, yet again, the White House's official line, as he frequently does. (Not the originator of his ideas, so he shouldn't be permitted to write them out.)

Mickey Kaus has been having great fun at Ambinder's expense by noting that Ambinder is the only guy in politics, pretty much, willing to commit the most ludicrous spin from the White House to postings which are supposed to be seriously-intended, rather than parody.

Stuff like "Obama won August!" Yeah, Ambinder actually got spun on that, before walking it back, slightly, to "Obama survived August."

Kaus calls him Marc "Please Spin Me Some More" Ambinder or somethin'.

So, you know. Here's a confirmed Tesla-level genius, the kind of guy who's told by Rahm or Axelturf that Obama won August and immediately dashes off a blog post to that effect, a Mensa Chapter President, telling us all that Palin's too dumb to have her effective editorial given any media attention.

And, meanwhile, his spinners/handlers at the White House are specifically giving Palin the attention he claims she doesn't deserve.

Remember, Marc Ambinder only has the GOP's and Palin's best interests at heart with all this.

Semi-Correction: While Kaus does in fact knock Ambinder's apparent politico-sexual masochistic craving to be spun, he thinks that on this current spin -- Obama winning August -- it's so frickin' stupid it must have come from Ambinder himself.

Are They Afraid of Her, Or Do They Think She's Unpopular and Are Therefore Attempting the Rush Limbaugh Maneuver on Her? Actually, now that I think about it (I got spun by my tipster!), I think it's the latter.

But it won't work. See, Palin is on the right side of this issue as far as popular opinion. (And she wrote a heckuva editorial, too.)

So associating Palin with the anti-ObamaCare side of things doesn't reduce support for the anti-ObamaCare side.

Instead, it increases support for Palin.

The White House has become increasingly petulant about simply calling anyone who disagrees with them a liar, or stupid. They think they will be able to make this sale more easily if they make Sarah Palin the face of the resistance.

Not so. The public believes most of of what Palin believes. They're not going to change their minds simply because Palin is on the same side they are. Even if they don't like her.

Lose-lose for Obama. The attack accomplishes nothing to help themselves, and only increases Palin's profile and credibility.

Precisely the opposite result that the other guy spinning Ambinder hoped would occur.

Thanks to Rene.

Obama is shooting down, when he should be shooting up.  Obama is the President of the USA, and Palin is just a washed up governor of a Podunk State.

These hilarious attacks, claiming "When Palin does it its bad, but when NotMyPresident does it, its good" reminds me of when Barry's workout regime was lauded and golfing followed breathlessly, while Bush's exercise and golf were derided as "ignoring the problems of the country."

I guess we know what was discussed on the morning conference call/JournoList:

“Even Gov. Palin in the essay that, I don’t know, she wrote herself” - the official wryly continued, drawing laughter from reporters - “as she considered all of the complexities of this issue…” (Politico)

“This new version of Sarah Palin is like those lip-sync groups from the ’90s that didn’t sing their own songs or write their own lyrics. She’s the Milli Vanilli of American politics.” (HuffPo)

“Did you REALLY write that Mrs. Palin?” (DailyKos)

“You have really lowered your standards if you think Americans are stupid enough to believe that Sarah Palin was the author of the piece you submitted in your September 9th edition of WSJ.” (DKos)

“Now, on the eve of Obama’s critical speech to Congress, Palin is back with a clearly ghostwritten resurrection of the death panel meme.” (DKos)

“Who Wrote Sarah Palin’s Boring Op-Ed Today?” (Gawker)

etc, etc., etc.

The hardcore libs will be happy because to them Palin is nothing but Caribou Barbie, so making her the face of the opposition (pick it, polarize it, isolate it) seems like a win.

Reminds me of the Nixon re-election in 72, when the NYTimes reporter turned to her friends and said, "I don't know how Nixon got re-elected. No one I know voted for him."

Great book: The Black Swan, by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.  Among other things, he mentions that no one builds monuments to the leaders who prevent terror attacks, because we forget that those attacks were probable in the absence of that leadership.

The title of the book comes from the syllogism, "All swans are white.  This bird is a swan.  Therefore, this bird is white."  That was irrefutably true for Europeans... right up until the time of Captain Cook's voyage to Australia.  Australia has a native species of swan that is jet black.  Taleb's point is that, just because you've never seen something, you can't assume it doesn't exist.

While Taleb is concerned mostly with rare economic events and rare political events, his admonition applies to Sarah Palin.  No one had ever seen a strong, common-sense, good-looking female politician who rose from the middle middle class before.  Many people who were locked into the "all swans are white" old reality therefore tried to dismiss black swan Sarah Palin as not real, not genuine, an impostor, a white swan painted black.

The wonderful thing is that Libtards (up to and including Obama) and faux Conservatives are locked in a futile effort to find the white down under Sarah's black feathers, and as a consequence their attention is drawn away from the efforts of others to expose the Red underbelly of the Liberal/Progressive/Democrat enterprise.

It's so funny, isn't it?  They believe not only that Obama wrote Issues From My Daddy but that he also wrote Audacity of Audacity.

Jack Cashill takes a lot of liberties with his analysis, but you have to be a real Obama sycophant to believe (1) Obama did not get serious help with Issues, probably from Ayers and (2) Obama actually wrote Audacity.  Being in the position he was at the time, it would have been silly for him to have written it and the story that he took very late nights to write it just clashes with what we know of his work habits.  Moreover, it appears not to have been written by the same person.

But let's throw that all away.  The liberals' previous icon was a young president.  Who was credit with writing a book.  That he didn't write.

But it would have taken a profile in courage for them to admit that JFK wasn't quite as rara an avis as they thought he was.

Let me get this straight... government-provided healthcare is somehow an original thought by Obama?  Hasn't that idea been around for decades?

And how much credibility does Obama really have for forming policy when thus far all he's done is hand the ball to Pelosi and Reid only to stand on the sidelines cheering them on?  Where in his vast experience of a few years in the Senate- most of which was spent campaigning- did he become an authority on health care?

For that matter, where's Ambinder's original thought in this article which consists of little more than White House-prompted spin?  The entire basis of the article is Palin = dumb, Obama = smart.  That's what passes for intelligent commentary now?

129

RULE 1: "Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have." Power is derived from 2 main sources - money and people. "Have-Nots" must build power from flesh and blood. (These are two things of which there is a plentiful supply. Government and corporations always have a difficult time appealing to people, and usually do so almost exclusively with economic arguments.)

RULE 2: "Never go outside the expertise of your people." It results in confusion, fear and retreat. Feeling secure adds to the backbone of anyone. (Organizations under attack wonder why radicals don't address the "real" issues. This is why. They avoid things with which they have no knowledge.)

RULE 3: "Whenever possible, go outside the expertise of the enemy." Look for ways to increase insecurity, anxiety and uncertainty. (This happens all the time. Watch how many organizations under attack are blind-sided by seemingly irrelevant arguments that they are then forced to address.)

RULE 4: "Make the enemy live up to its own book of rules." If the rule is that every letter gets a reply, send 30,000 letters. You can kill them with this because no one can possibly obey all of their own rules. (This is a serious rule. The besieged entity's very credibility and reputation is at stake, because if activists catch it lying or not living up to its commitments, they can continue to chip away at the damage.)

RULE 5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon." There is no defense. It's irrational. It's infuriating. It also works as a key pressure point to force the enemy into concessions. (Pretty crude, rude and mean, huh? They want to create anger and fear.)

RULE 6: "A good tactic is one your people enjoy." They'll keep doing it without urging and come back to do more. They're doing their thing, and will even suggest better ones. (Radical activists, in this sense, are no different that any other human being. We all avoid "un-fun" activities, and but we revel at and enjoy the ones that work and bring results.)

RULE 7: "A tactic that drags on too long becomes a drag." Don't become old news. (Even radical activists get bored. So to keep them excited and involved, organizers are constantly coming up with new tactics.)

RULE 8: "Keep the pressure on. Never let up." Keep trying new things to keep the opposition off balance. As the opposition masters one approach, hit them from the flank with something new. (Attack, attack, attack from all sides, never giving the reeling organization a chance to rest, regroup, recover and re-strategize.)

RULE 9: "The threat is usually more terrifying than the thing itself." Imagination and ego can dream up many more consequences than any activist. (Perception is reality. Large organizations always prepare a worst-case scenario, something that may be furthest from the activists' minds. The upshot is that the organization will expend enormous time and energy, creating in its own collective mind the direst of conclusions. The possibilities can easily poison the mind and result in demoralization.)

RULE 10: "If you push a negative hard enough, it will push through and become a positive." Violence from the other side can win the public to your side because the public sympathizes with the underdog. (Unions used this tactic. Peaceful [albeit loud] demonstrations during the heyday of unions in the early to mid-20th Century incurred management's wrath, often in the form of violence that eventually brought public sympathy to their side.)

RULE 11: "The price of a successful attack is a constructive alternative." Never let the enemy score points because you're caught without a solution to the problem. (Old saw: If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem. Activist organizations have an agenda, and their strategy is to hold a place at the table, to be given a forum to wield their power. So, they have to have a compromise solution.)

RULE 12: Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it." Cut off the support network and isolate the target from sympathy. Go after people and not institutions; people hurt faster than institutions. (This is cruel, but very effective. Direct, personalized criticism and ridicule works.)

Heh.  That Rush Limbaugh maneuver worked so well for them the first time.  I can see why they would want to try it again ...

They're afraid of her.  And they should be.

The White House has become increasingly petulant about simply calling anyone who disagrees with them a liar, or stupid.

This has always SOP for them.  It just looks funnier and stranger as they are doing it from an increasingly waning position and as everyone and his brother knows that the White House is nothign but a bunch of liars and morons (many of us have known this from the start, but much of America needed to be shown proof of it, time and time again).

Personally, I get a kick out of the The Precedent's crowd trying to make fun of anything when the moron, himself, has never learned to use the indefinite article and his "profit and earnings ratios", all by itself, showed that he has the mathematical acumen of an 8th grader, if that.  The Precedent's attempt to ridicule and mock his Porkulus opponents by laughing that we are so sily to not realize that "spending IS stimulus", as opposed to relaxed regulations, tax cuts (not welfare but actual cuts), etc... are more stimulative than any government spending.  But, we are in the era of "bury jars of money and let people dig them up" sort of fiscal theory.

The Washington junta would be hysterically funny, as a sit-com or reality show.  It's a shame that they have positions of actual responsibility and will likely destroy the US before they are finished.

My desire for tonight's speech is that Obama himself, by words from his own mouth, comes to realize that he is not nearly as wonderful as he thinks he is.  That he finally realizes that are many people who, from the depths of their beings, sincerely hope that his policies fail.  And that their hopes are not synonymous with America failing but instead that they hope that his failure will guarantee that America will be preserved.

166 BTW...WH media goons attacked Limbaugh, who then destroyed them....(battle between pop guns and 357 magnum...). Conservatives on talk radio, who are true to our beliefs are NOT Republican stooges. Levin, Beck, Hannnity are hardly apologists for the party. Hard to attack them when they have been constant critics of weak-kneed Reps and RINO's. Our belief system is STRONG and proven by history, unlike liberals..who now call themselves Progressives..we don't need to change our label every 20 years.....and hope people forget what a disaster it was....
Because BHO has packed his staff and ranks of advisors with Marxists, Socialists and hacks....we have a plethora of people who look very bad on paper and are far out of the "mainstream" that the MSM loves to "define". Jones was not defended because they had nothing to defend him with !
Imagine a "Green Jobs Tsar" with no experience in green technology, no experience with a for profit company, no experience working on public/private R&D initiatives....his only experience was a.....you guessed it...Community Organizer. That will surely create lots on lasting jobs......
MSM is in a terrible position because they can't defend, they can only ignore or play the race card. It gets kind of bad when the response to every critique is "because of their race".....

I posted this already in another thread, but it is so good, I think it bears repeating.

Awesome op-ed in WSJ "A Bipartisan Plan to Wreck the System" by Holman W. Jenkins, Jr.  It contains a "leaked first draft" of the speech that Obama is planning to give tonight:

Salami tactics on health care have long involved slicing the salami from both ends.  On one hand, we enlarge the government's role in providing health care, making more and more voters dependent on Washington.  On the other, we enact regulations and restrictions to keep driving the private insurance system off a cliff.

To the American people I promise tonight, whatever compromises lay ahead, whatever the arduous negotioations, Democrats and Republicans will work together to continue to drive the current system off a cliff.  (Applause from Democrats in the audience; Nancy Pelosi beams).

Baehner? (sp?)

He (or whoever) should share his mic time with Sarah, or at least have her in view of the camera. Especially if Obama names Palin during his speech. Just that alone will force the media to watch the rebuttal instead of ignoring him and having a 2 hour talking head love-fest.

Palin can bring up the next attack on the Obamacare, call it what it is, and talk about the Green Eco-Marxism in our government.

And then, to counter Obama's "standin faces" for Marxist-minimal Healthcare, bring in some "faces of death panel" or maybe some of the Town Hall vocalists who are on You-Tube. By doing that, she looks more presidential, because she makes a unique counterstrike against Obama. They might have to plant those people to capture the camera at the right moment. Its not the state of the Union, so why not?

I sincerely hope that the venom that the left is directing at Palin backfires on them. I hope that the great mass of the American people sees the disconnect between the viciousness of the left and their target. Whatever you may think of Palin (and I become more a fan everyday in direct response to the hate directed against her) I think that most fair minded people would acknowledge that she is not the horror that the left portrays her as. She is a self made, unpretentious woman, unlike most of those on the left, with a strong appeal to Middle America.

I think that the mask is slipping from the Left's face and I want the people of America to see them for what they are. Hate filled elitists.

Keep it up. Please.

144 Are They Afraid of Her, Or Do They Think She's Unpopular and Are Therefore Attempting the Rush Limbaugh Maneuver on Her

Maybe they got their chocolate in their peaaut butter?  They think she's unpopular because they're afraid of her, maybe.   I mean there have been polls about her popularity in the last month that weren't great (okay they were bad), but if you're a liberal who's scared of everything she represents, wouldn't those polls seem more important to you than they in fact are?

That's right.  It's called "whistling past the graveyard": you're afraid of what's lurking in the dark to get you, so you whistle a happy tune and tell yourself there's nothing lurking the dark to get you.  Of course, if you hear a twig snap or an owl hoot, you soil your pants and run like hell anyway, regardless of how much you convinced yourself there was nothing there.

Well, releasing the talking points and mentioning Sarah Palin's "attack" is President Obama soiling his pants and running like hell from the Boogeywoman.

Hey, Andrea Mitchell was very concerned about this.  When she was interviewing Valerie Jarrett earlier this a.m., she mentioned that Clinton's teleprompter malfunctioned when he was delivering a similar speech about health care.  Valerie said not to worry.  That the Prez feels very passionate about this topic and that he will just speak from the heart if that happens.  Ha!  When he's off prompter, he often flubs.  Like when he answered that kid who asked why we didn't have nationalized health care even though a bunch of other countries do.  Obama said, "Well, a lot of people already have private health insurance from their employers and most of them are very happy with that."  Yeah, it's just breathtaking, isn't it?

207 Palin's Response to the White House on facebook now...lol, barry is so screwed:

I'm pleased that the White House is finally responding to Republican health care ideas instead of pretending they don't exist.[1] But in doing so President Obama should follow his own sound advice and avoid making "wild misrepresentations".[2] Medicare vouchers would give everyone on Medicare the chance to decide for themselves which health plan to use, rather than leave that decision to government bureaucrats. Such proposals are the kind of health care reform that Republicans stand for: market-oriented, patient-centered, and result-driven.

The White House talking points leave the rest of my arguments unanswered. They don't respond to the idea that all individuals should get the same tax benefits received by those who get coverage through their employers; that we must reform our tort laws; and that we should allow Americans to buy insurance across state lines. The White House also fails to respond to the Nyce/Schieber study indicating that wages will fall if the government expands coverage without reducing health care inflation rates.

One last thing: after President Obama's speech tonight, listen for which pundits use the words "false", "scary", and "risky" in describing the proposals I put forward. That's how you'll be able to tell who the White House counted as "allies" worthy of receiving its talking points.
