Democratic Congressman: This Is My Meeting, My Rules

Just saw this on Fox.

Meet Congressman Baron Hill (DEMOCRAT, IN). He's more imporant than you. Just ask him. No wait, you don't have to, he'll tell you.

I love how he makes it sound as if an elected official offering his constituents an opportunity to be in the same room as him is a gift. And this woman doesn't appreciate it? What an ill bred fool she is!

All I can say Baron (how great a name is that for him?) is, arrogant and stupid is no way to go through life punk.

More:
This is apparently from a few weeks ago but is just starting to get national attention. It's a nice cap on the August of Democrats discontent.

An oh yeah, he voted to keep the government option in the House bill.

Even More:

This tool is one of the so-called "Blue Dogs". In fact, he's the number 2 Blue Dog.

He served 3 terms (99-'05), lost in '04 but won again in '06. He ran against the same opponent every time and that guy might run again.

IN-9: Former Rep. Mike Sodrel (R), who has run against Rep. Baron Hill (D) four times (winning once) says he has not yet ruled out a fifth campaign in 2010. Already in the race for the Republicans are attorney Todd Young and conservative activist Travis Hankins.

6 I have to admit it. Thank God for YouTube.

There. I said it. Let's not speak of this again.

So, anyhoo, about YouTube - the irony of Baron Hill (DEMOCRAT, IN) saying he bans/controls video-taking in his meeting getting recorded and placed on YouTube is delicious.

Why, its opposition-campaign worthy.

66 Calvin Coolidge's re-election campaign is something I wish our politicians today would emulate. He completely ignored the opposition and simply went around the country explaining his philosophy of government to the people, and he was re-elected comfortably.

Hopefully this jerk will be sent where he belongs, somewhere that is not the United States House of Representatives. We are approaching a fundamental reordering of the relationship between the government and the people, all the signs are there. It's happened several times before in the history of the Republic and hopefully it will be like the other ones: the people come out the winners.

True is such a strong word. Let's just say a certain koala, maybe two, sees life quite differently since a certain weekend in 1991.

Barney Frank wants Cabinet post

By Bob Cusack
-

09/07/09 05:07 PM ET

Rep. Barney Frank is interested in capping his political career as a
member of the president’s Cabinet, according to a new biography of the
Financial Services Committee chairman.

Frank
(D-Mass.) told author Stuart Weisberg that he would like to be Housing
and Urban Development secretary. However, the 69-year-old lawmaker
stresses that his departure from Congress is not imminent.
He first wants to
pass more legislation on affordable housing, saying, “I want at least
two years with President Obama and a solidly Democratic Senate so that
we can get the federal government back in the housing business.”

No president has ever appointed an openly gay man or woman to the Cabinet.

Not in the way he said it as he sounded like a flaming asshole, but the overall point is true.
Any meeting has to have its rules, orders, and procedures. Otherwise, it's a cluster.
I don't think there's anything wrong with asking that the ppl that attend the meeting be actual constituents (which wasn't the case here but has come up in other townhalls). If you don't like a rep for political reasons but they aren't in your district, fine, protest outside. But you shouldn't be able to rabble-rouse in a member's district that's not yours.

206 @laceyunderalls

I could go along with you, were it not for the "my Congressional office" BS. Last time I checked the Constitution, the office and his job description were to represent the people and interests of the district he represents aka oh yes we do tell you how to run "your" office Mr. Fancypants.

Sure, he can make all the rules of order he wants. The simple fact is that, in context, he's not concerned with order. He's only, by his own words, concerned with silencing dissent and trying (but failing miserably) to keep his self-damning statements off of YouTube.

Congress Critters need to be reminded that they are not elected nor paid to think. Their job is to be the mouthpiece of their district and express the will of the people they represent. They are to vote the way that they are told to vote. Townhalls are an opportunity for them to listen to their constituents, not the other way around. If they can't manage this, we shouldn't have to wait to vote them out, they should be forced out of office at the end of a pitchfork.

Aha. You've noted a key point. This actually kills the argument. In this case, his case, Congressman Baron Hill (DEMOCRAT, IN) did not (as far as we know) have external agents in the audience. It was the constituents' meeting and their representative. They actually are entitled to "rabblerouse." Surely one can rabblerouse from the fringes with a camera silently documenting public debate.

I don't hate you. Just your message. And I don't really hate you either. Or your message. I just reserve my right to rabblerouse. But Glines? Totally hateable.

Maybe, did you have any before? You're right that meeting have to have rules. You're wrong that video taping should be one of them. A town hall meeting with an elected official is supposed to be an open event for everyone, not just the relatively few that got tickets. It isn't a rock concert. The fact that Baron Hill knows he's a dumb ass and wants as few people as possible to know about it doesn't mean they shouldn't know about it.

Ace played the concern troll about the "YouTube moments" thing a few weeks ago too. And he was rightly smacked down for being an ignorant concern troll and smearing and generalizing the town halls. Unless people have gone to the townhalls like such people as Jim Hoft at Gateway Pundit and others, then I don't see how anyone can make "generalizations" about them. We already had this argument a few weeks ago.

No one is looking for a "YouTube moment". People are rightly pissed off after MONTHS of the Reps answering their questions with BS talking points, lies, smears, name-calling, accusations of racism or just walking out of the townhalls without answering their constituents questions. The shouting is not being done just for the gawddamned hell of it.

Imagine a woman in an discussion with her man. The woman asks "So where do you want to go on Saturday night?" The man responds with "what's with all these questions!!??!! You are just a stupid b!tchy kunt on your period aren't you?!

Now, in the face of that, I would never expect the woman to keep her cool and continue granting the douchebag any respect.

And that is exactly what is happening at some of these townhalls. The constituents have been asking questions for MONTHS now, only to get douchbag reactions on par with my example above.

The fact that these townhalls have not turned into beatdown sessions followed up with tarring and featherings shows just how much poise and class these townhall protesters actually have.

Seriously, there's no need for any concern troll crap here. We worked through all that weeks ago. Let's move on and forward.

266 197 I don't think there's anything wrong with asking that the ppl that
attend the meeting be actual constituents (which wasn't the case here
but has come up in other townhalls). If you don't like a rep for
political reasons but they aren't in your district, fine, protest
outside. But you shouldn't be able to rabble-rouse in a member's
district that's not yours.

Well, that all depends. Does the representative get to vote on legislation that affects people outside his or her district?

Does the representative get to serve on committees that make policy recommendations or policy vetoes that affect people outside his or her district?

I think it's perfectly fine to remind members of Congress that what they do affects people outside their district. And while we may not get to vote in other districts, we can certainly influence the elections there by speaking our minds and even making donations in those races.

Iranian Invites Six Powers To Tehran
Ahmadinejad Offer Includes U.S. but Rejects Nuclear TalksTEHRAN, Sept. 7 -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday
invited representatives from a group of six world powers, including the
United States, to Tehran, but he said negotiations over his country's
right to a nuclear program would be off the table.

Discussion on the nuclear issue, he told reporters at a news conference, is "finished."

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly said the United States and its
partners have not received an invitation or "an official response" to
the offer of talks. "Our offer to engage stands, but we are looking for
a response via official channels, not the media," he said.

A senior administration official, speaking on the condition of
anonymity because no official communication has been received, said
U.S. officials were "struck at how little new there was in the comments
earlier today, particularly in light of the desires of so many Iranians
for a new relationship with the rest of the world."

Iran has said its nuclear program is entirely peaceful and geared
toward developing electricity. The United States and other Western
nations say they believe Iran intends to weaponize the technology.

Although Ahmadinejad said Iran was not willing to discuss limits on
its nuclear program, he said it was prepared for talks on the peaceful
use of nuclear energy worldwide and "an effective management to prevent
proliferation of nuclear weapons and promote global disarmament."

Hmmm, clearly you haven't been to a tea party. The one in Cincinnati on Saturday had its fair share of interesting characters (with kids holding ridiculous signs nonetheless). If you're confident in the fact you're right, have repsect for those that may disagree. I'm all for giving ppl rope to hang themselves with.
Eh, I guess we agree to disagree on this. I've read this blogs for a few years now--not really commented until recently. I rabble roused (heh) with most folks that day and then we all just agreed to have our differences and move along. I spend too much time debating those I find to hold truly heinous political beliefs--I won't do it with my comrades.

Bonus history lesson: Another reason to repudiate Jimmy Carter:

Some specifically ascribe the demise of the three-martini lunch to Jimmy Carter, who condemned the practice during the 1976 presidential campaign. Carter portrayed it as part of the unfairness in the nation's tax laws, claiming that the working class was subsidizing the "$50 martini lunch." ... His opponent, incumbent President Gerald R Ford, responded with: "The three-martini lunch is the epitome of American efficiency. Where else can you get an earful, a bellyful and a snootful at the same time?"

309 Despite what everyone is saying, I think it's probably unlikely that ALLEN GLINES raped and murdered a young girl in 1990.

But, since there haven't been any credible denials, we owe it to the Truth to investigate whether ALLEN GLINES did rape and murder a young girl in 1990.

ALLEN GLINES, can you prove where you were in 1990, and that you were NOT raping and murdering young girls?

310 I had the displeasure of being at that townhall meeting. Hill was only there to sell the Obama plan and couldn't have cared less what any of his constituents had to say. He just kept repeating the same "If you like your doctor you'll be able to keep him, blah, blah, blah.

Every election Baron's been in has been very close and he may have stepped on his dick with this shit. I can only hope.

Mike Sodrel is a good guy, but I hope he decides to sit this one out as there's a young guy (Naval Academy Grad) who's making a run.

I can't stand the arrogant little shit how he got to be classified as a Blue Dog is beyond me. Except for firearms he votes straight Pelosi.

312 i am so sick and tired of hearing this term "blue dog," as if these guys are somehow fiscally more responsible then the occupant of the white house. seems to me that they all have supported the gorging at the public trough, and have supported the stupid cap and tax bill.

they are dumbocrats, plain and simple. they are elitist who think they have to relieve you from your money because THEY know best how it should be spent. they believe the phrase, " my brother's keeper," means that you should take care of everyone else's brother to the point where you can't feed your own kids, or pay for your kids college tuition. how many parents would send thier kids to private school like these leaches all do if only they weren't taxed to death by the bottom feeding thieves?

what a jerk. baron indeed. why is this guy even in office? who votes these jerks into power?

314 My old man is an acquaintance of Mike Sodrel, and related a story that Hill dug a knuckle into Sodrel's kidney as they stood side-by-side after a debate. Apparently he's a complete fucking scumbag.

Indiana is (usually) Republican, but Southern Indiana has been dominated by democrats since at least the mid sixties. Lee Hamilton had that seat for about 34 years before Baron Hill.

316 "This is my town hall meeting for you. And youre not going to tell me how to run my Congressional office. Now, the reason why I dont allow filming is that usually the films that are done end up on YouTube in a compromising position."

EXACTLY Herr Hill you arrogant non-representing moron and mostly because more people, who you supposedly represent, would see what a pompous ass you really are. I guess your lowly minions just don't realize how fortunate they are that you have allowed them to be in your presence. Don't be too hard on us peons great and exalted leader, we aren't educated and intelligent like you are and we haven't run the country in the ground like you and your traitorous cohorts have. Oh and by the way the last time I looked that was OUR congressional office and you were supposed to be running it how WE the people wanted. Don't let the door (that WE THE PEOPLE pay dearly for) hit you in the Baron Hill on your way out come election time.
