There's just no evidence that Van Jones is a Truther.
None whatsoever. Can't find anything at all. It's just nonexistent. Except the above, and except for his signature on a Truther petition, which, for reasons that escape me entirely, is dismissed as no evidence at all. One would think that if someone signs a short petition easily read in the span of two minutes, the burden of proof would be on that person to prove that he didn't endorse the sentiments he specifically stated he was endorsing by signing. But for some people, whose names will go unmentioned, it seems that the burden of proof is on everyone else to prove that the guy meant what he meant when he signed what he signed. t was first come, first serve for the dorm rooms reserved for the Black Radical Congress, held June 19 to 21 at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The area around the registration desk looked a lot like homeless shelters since welfare reform: full to bursting with folks in need of a bed. The scramble for a dorm room, at half the rate of the local Quality Inn and one-fifth the rate of the Hyatt five blocks away, was so intense that few of the nearly 2,000 activists, academics and voyeurs descending on UIC to develop a "transformative politics that will focus on the conditions of Black working and poor people" even heard, much less heeded, "the last and final call" to join the march in solidarity with the Chicago Coalition for Public Housing.
This age-old organizers' challenge of getting beyond semantic and ideological trappings was effectively addressed by an intergenerational dialogue. Sixties activists such as Kathleen Cleaver and Angela Davis shared war stories and wisdom with younger activists such as Van Jones, whose Bay Area-based Ella Baker Human Rights Center tackles police brutality, and Kim Diehl, who does union organizing in the South. Ahmed Rahman, a former Black Panther in Chicago who served more than twenty-one years in prison on drug charges trumped up by the FBI and the police, told a story of organizing a boycott as a teenager. His mother had dispatched him down South one summer to keep him from Chicago's notorious gang the Blackstone Rangers. At the black high school he attended, the students were served hot dogs and baked beans every day while the white students across town got beef pepper steak, chicken, vegetables. Rahman, who had been reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X, organized a boycott to protest the gross disparity. When some of his fellow students came up to him and said, "This is the only meal I get all day; I can't boycott it," Rahman came to understand that using tactics gleaned from a book paled against those learned from the experiences of people.
Unfortunately, feelings of being marginalized by the celebrity activists--"If you're not 45 or 50, if you can't prove you got a jail record or been exiled, if you can't show a battle scar or a book, then your perspective doesn't count," as one youth put it--prevented some Youth Caucus members from learning valuable lessons. Right after the intergenerational rap session, the Youth Caucus skipped the "Raise the Roof" party featuring the rapper Common--presumably booked for their benefit--to hammer out their own, "more radical" principles of unity. Ignoring, or ignorant of, the old SNCC slogan, "Let the People Speak" they were obsessed with finalizing "an action plan that we can go back to our communities and organize around."

We need Green Technology Training Centers in every public high school, vocational school and community college. And America needs an Energy Corps, like Americorps and the Peace Corps, to train and deploy millions of youth in the vital work of rewiring a nation.

It is obvious that eco-chic, embraced by the eco-elite, won’t save the planet. Climate change activists may be tempted to try to sidestep the issues of racial inclusion, in the name of expedience — but the truth is that eco-apartheid is just a speed-bump on the way to eco-apocalypse. Any successful, long-term strategy will require a full and passionate embrace of the principle of eco-equity.
More importantly, climate activists can open the door to a grand historic alliance — a political force with the power to bend history in a new direction.
