| Slate: screw "the kids" future, run those printing presses at warp speedWell, I'm glad that jingoistic phony concern is finally out of the way. ...There is a good, simple reason for taking a more selfish view of the cost our present debt imposes on future Americans: All else being equal, those future Americans will be leading better, easier, richer lives... ...The main reason that the future should be better off is staring at you from the light-emitting diodes in the back of your screen: improvements in technology...The writer then goes on, essentially, to make the case for American Exceptionalism WRT technology advancements -- a notion I would generally agree with. The fundamental problem here of course is one of timing. I do believe we are on the brink of the next technological revolution. Indeed, anyone who follows science news to any degree has seen brief glimpses of what is to come, and how radically different it will be as we relentlessly push out the boundaries of "the possible" beyond what was considered science fiction only 10 or 15 years ago. Bio/Nano/Materials/etc its going to be like the Cambrian Explosion. Much of what was considered "settled science" 20 or 30 years ago it going to get turned on its head and invalidated as we discover how this physical universe really works. Its incredibly exciting shit, and I'm proud to be a small part of it. HOWEVER, this new StarGate/StarTrek type technology isn't going to happen full force in 10 or even 15 or 20 years. As a long term salvation, yes, it will be there. The problem with this mounting debt isn't a 25 year one though, its more of a 5/10/15 year one before there are dire consequences. What will fill that gap before we get Civilization v2.0 online and producing? Comments1
This is the same fool, notably at the Atlantic, that has tried to defend cap n trade, who has attacked every aspect of equitable tax policy that the Governor attempted, so unless we discover dilithium any day now, we're out of luck

This writer does not "get it" at all - the real threat of the debt has *nothing* to do with technology in the future. The threat is much simpler and more direct - with the debt skyrocketing, we are quickly going to lose our ability to keep financing it with other people's money. (especially the Chinese) When they quit buying our debt, interest rates will skyrocket as the dollar collapses against other currencies and this country's economy will be destroyed for a generation, if not two. Unemployment will not recover for a decade, at least, because under high interest rates new job creation will be anemic, at best. Ask Argentina how this worked out when they tried it. Of course, we could always simply try to "monetize the debt". (ie, print our way out of the jam) Weimar Germany and Zimbabwe have tried that one. He writes that "The fundamental problem here of course is one of timing." Well, yes, he's right with that one. And our time runs out LONG before any possible techno-fix can come to our rescue. ...There is a good, simple reason for taking a more selfish view of the cost our present debt imposes on future Americans: All else being equal, those future Americans will be leading better, easier, richer lives... Substitute "Roman" or "British" or "Sumerian" in there and see if the message is still the same.

You can't do reasonable scenario planning with these kinds of assumptions. =It's the same reason the CBO doesn't do projections based on law that isn't on the books yet: you're making shit up. Money is not an infinite commodity, unless you do not mind needing a wheelbarrow full of it to buy a loaf of bread (oh, my bad, you write for Slate, you will need a wheelbarrow full of it to buy a latte - and no tip for barista). See, every dollar the government borrows takes that same dollar out of the funds available to lend to private companies to develop, market and exploit the new technology that you are counting on. Every dollar I spend on welfare and government waste is one less dollar I can spend on innovation and research. Does anyone understand basic economics anymore - or are we really peering through the lookingglass?

isn't Defense spending responsible for most of these government-generated technological leaps?
Through recorded history, the major "technological leaps" have happened as a matter of necessity rather than government funding. By "necessity", I mean ideas "who's time has come", and the technology of the day was capable of manufacturing devices to implement them. This "implementability window" for the "big ideas" might vary 50, 100, or even more years one way or another, but once it opens up, and there is a pressing need, someone somewhere working in a lab or their garage will stumble across it and it becomes reality. This is where our turbo-boost is going to come from. The ability to manufacture some very strange shit that would have been impossible even 10 years ago is fast becoming reality. We can manufacture exotic materials today with a laser that would have been flat out impossible to manufacture or even conceive of 10 years ago. crushing tax burden of corporations and individuals as well as interest payments on the govt. debt will limit the development of technology. the administration has already killed a number of high-profile defense programs, which consistently reap technological benefits for the consumer. whether or not it's the best way to advance our understanding of aeronautics and space, nasa is broke and will cease to provide much innovation. consumers will be hard-pressed to shell out for the latest technology simply because they have less money to spend. you simply can't get new technology from income redistribution, increased taxes, and single-payer healthcare. There are many things public officials probably shouldn't do during a severe recession, but no one seems to have told the leaders in Florida about them. One thing, for instance, would be giving a dozen top aides hefty raises while urging a rise in property taxes, as the mayor of Miami-Dade County recently did. Or jacking up already exorbitant hurricane-insurance premiums, as Florida's government-run property insurer just did. Or sending an army of highly paid lobbyists to push for a steep hike in electricity rates, as South Florida's public utility is doing.
And you wonder why the Sunshine State is experiencing its first net emigration of people since World War II. Imagine that. Posted by: TheQuietMan at September 04, 2009 01:21 PM (1Jaio) Posted by: INCITEmarsh at September 04, 2009 01:21 PM (oPFyu) 60

***** "As people dig around for incriminating evidence on Van Jones at 9/11 Truther sites and crazy conspiracy sites like the antisemitic, Holocaust-denying rense.com (which, by the way, is not a credible source of information about anything), here are a couple of tidbits that tend to back up Jones’ claim that he is not a Truther and signed that infamous document under false pretenses. First, Ben Smith contacted two of the other “signatories” of that document, and learned that they had indeed been misled by the Truthers, and thought they were signing a legitimate document calling for further investigations. In other words, the Truthers lied about the real intent of their document in order to get people to sign it. Imagine my surprise. But that’s not all. The document currently posted at the Truther website was altered to remove a name: Rachel Ehrenfeld, author of “Funding Evil; How Terrorism is Financed and How to Stop It.” ... Please note: if Van Jones is forced to step down over the issue, I’m not going to be unhappy. He’s clearly much farther to the left than a presidential aide should be. But it’s a little pathetic that people would eagerly accept the word of Truthers and rense.com, without any other evidence." ***** So there you have it. The real problem right now is demographics. And a global "water empire". Because science is not compatible with Islamic fundamentalism (don't believe a damn thing most historians have written about Arabic nourishment of science and mathematics during the so-called Euro Dark and Middle Ages: they stole their sh*t from the Hindus and Chinese): Islam is intolerant of the scientific method. Those [demographic] numbers are not good at all. Steyn is the only one carrying this water; he's right.

Is ammunition a primary or secondary asset?
Posted by: Jean at September 04, 2009 01:30 PM (L64A6) - Primary of course. Think Legolas without his arrows. Besides, with ammo, you can go out and get some food (by hunting). Without ammo, someone might just come and take away your food. Posted by: teej at September 04, 2009 01:52 PM (c459z) 90

That's pretty much the way it is. The Chinese have made a huge bet on future American innovation...because they'll be the ones mass producing the stuff Americans dream up and develop. They understand the strength's and weaknesses of both our cultures, and see the two nations as being complementary in the long run. Based on historical data, the Chinese made a sound bet. 98 - Unfortunately, liberals (and others) have come to believe that if there is a problem, economic or otherwise, it can be resolved through legislation and there is no limit to the number of problems or the number of times the problems can be legislated away. There are also no consequences to this tactic. And this is reinforced by what else - legislation.
How many times has medicare or social security been "fixed" through legislation. What did the legislation accomplish? It magically created a bigger hole. And what were the consequences? My favorite is the ice grippers for her boots, to keep her from slipping when she's shoveling out their 100 ft driveway.

Bingo! Even with Kurzweil's 'Law of Accelerating Returns,' you've still got ten to fifteen years before the bleeding edge tech has a real impact on the economy. In the meantime, the Fed is floating checks to cover the Treasury ...and the Chinese have cut off our line of credit...and the Japanese have elected an administration that isn't real friendly towards the United States. ...and the interest on the debt keeps accruing and compounding. ...and the US keeps spending money it doesn't have on things it doesn't need and can't afford. Any scientific advances that far out are not sure. Far too much can and will happen between now and then. Haven't you ever read Popular Science? Even if you are playing a role in it, stop and think. Even if the science does come to fruition; will it actually be affordable?; can it be maintained by the mal-educated and enlarging illiterate populace?; is what takes to build these items sustainable?; and a dozen other such questions. It never works out as promised, as it seems now. As with future super medicine, on the drawing board does not make it so, number one.
Cynical? A bit, but more... practiced. I have seen the promises since I was a child and I have yet to see technology truly be life changing, unless you call addiction to computers, games, online gambling and porn (for many), an improvement. Beyond, what I see with computers is though they have helped, they have also created a generation (or three) who cannot seem to do simple tasks required to do the heavy work without the use of machines.
With every sword, a war. With every advance, a step back. With every promise, a doubt and a cost. But with all things too, hope. If one has lost hope, nothing matters. So, good luck with your part of these ventures, in any case.

As the owner of a tech company with groundbreaking new technology, I can attest to the fact that it is much harder to get the investment needed to get the technology out in the world in this current environment. Ever since congress passed Sarbannes/Oxely and took the golden goose of IPOs off the table it has been harder and harder to get investment. The events since Sept 08 have made it even worse. We are getting investors and even major companies to invest, but it is trickling in instead of pouring in. Forget about VCs, all they want to invest in is software technology, no matter what a game changing piece of technology you have. Oh and by the way, our technology could absolutely qualify as a green technology and it's still hard (so much for green jobs).
Through the persistence of the business development team and family loans, we have been able to wait this out; and yes things are turning around. If we had not had those resources, our technology would be dead in the water while we were working other jobs. How many other great ideas are suffering that fate? You need a free economy for people to have the resources to create the technologies to improve life. The person who wrote that article at Slate should join the real world - technologies don't get invented out of thin air or by magic. Debt consumes savings that would be the investment capital for new technology. Government projects, while sometimes yielding results is the most inefficient way and not based productivity, innovation, and profitability but mostly on politics and pull. To be fair, I believe he was referring to the backlight of the monitor, a role increasingly filled by LEDs. But other than that, the guy is insane. Lets look at the last time the economy was so screwed up, largely thanks to government meddling. But did anyone at the time think they were living in a tech golden age? Or were they more concern with keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table?
