Tom Ridge's Explosive Claim Of Political Pressure Fizzles

The publisher said Ridge's book would talk about political pressure to raise the Terror Threat Level.

Ridge now said no such thing ever happened.

"I'm not second-guessing my colleagues," Ridge said in an interview about The Test of Our Times, which comes out Tuesday and recounts his experiences as head of the nation's homeland security efforts in the first several years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

...Now, Ridge says he did not mean to suggest he was pressured to raise the threat level, and he is not accusing anyone of trying to boost Bush in the polls. "I was never pressured," Ridge said.

I guess that's the end of the Olbermann booking.

Publishers release jazzed up quotes all the time to generate some interest in what otherwise is likely to be a deathly boring book. I guess they figure the walk back won't get as much attention and the PR buzz from the initial release.

Given Ridge's less than electric public personality, it's hard to blame them for wanting to make it seem exciting. Who in their right mind was going to read this book before they heard that quote? Now we can all go back to ignoring it.

15

I remember that Lefties said that Ridge had made this claim before - YEARS ago - but the plain fact of the matter is that if you look at when the color coded alert level was changed, it was never during an election cycle:

High (Orange)

On a nationwide level, it has been raised to High five times:

September 10–24, 2002, the first anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. February 7–27, 2003, near the end of the Muslim religious holiday Hajj. Intelligence reports suggested the possibility of terrorist attacks against "apartment buildings, hotels, and other soft or lightly secured targets." March 17 – April 16, 2003, around the beginning of U.S. and Coalition military action in Iraq. May 20–30, 2003, after the Riyadh compound bombings and the Casablanca bombings. According to Tom Ridge: "The U.S. Intelligence Community believes that Al Qaeda has entered an operational period worldwide, and this may include terrorist attacks in the United States." December 21, 2003 – January 9, 2004, citing intelligence information suggesting large-scale attacks around the holiday season.

In addition, the alert has been raised to High on a select or partial basis three times:

August 1 – November 10, 2004, for specific financial institutions in northern New Jersey, New York, and Washington, D.C., citing intelligence pointing to the possibility of a car or truck bomb attack, naming specific buildings as possible targets.[21][22] July 7, 2005 – August 12, 2005, for mass transit systems only. The DHS secretary announced the level after the 7 July 2005 London bombings despite the absence of "specific, credible information suggesting imminent attack" in the United States.[23] August 10, 2006 – present, for all domestic airline flights and all international flights to or from the United States, with the exception of flights from the United Kingdom to the United States. Flights from the United Kingdom to the United States had been under a severe alert, but were downgraded to a high alert on August 14, 2006.[20]

I don't see how the financial sector one counts.

16 All the headlines when Ridge's "quote" comes out, and it takes him this long to deny it?

Of course, if I were his book company, I would be calling him up and saying -- "If you couldn't deny it right away, why couldn't you STFU for another week while we sell some books?"

What a tool.

Posted by: Brewdog at August 31, 2009 10:16 AM (pOQor)

17 Blurg - cut and past from wikipedia makes for ugly formatting.  Bottom line - the nationwide alert has not been changed since January 2004.

No, I think he did so before.

There's a difference between saying something and having the MSM report it.

I was one who speculated this very thing.  It's not uncommon for a publisher to do this, especially for a snore-fest like a Tom Ridge book.
