| CNN: Obama lied - your taxes ARE going to go up - a lotWhen CNN won't carry water for the one anymore, the charade is pretty much over. ...Shy of finding a fairy willing to leave trillions under Uncle Sam's pillow, lawmakers will have to raise taxes and cut spending... ...President Obama is pledging to keep taxes low for most people... ...Experts say that's not going to cut it. "Taxes are going up and they're going up for a lot more people than those making more than $250,000. Why? Math. The numbers don't come close to working,"...I've been told math is hard, particularly when lots of zeros and numbers Steven Hawking would be more familiar with are involved. Comments1

The Democratic nominee for president supports plans to raise income taxes ... raise payroll taxes ... raise investment income taxes ... raise the death tax ... raise business taxes ... and increase the tax burden on the American people by hundreds of billions of dollars. - Sarah Palin one year ago tomorrow Posted by: Trish at August 28, 2009 07:34 PM (0U5Kd) 11

I truly think he had a 3-pronged approach and all had to be implemented for it to work: (1) porkulus, (2) cap and trade and (3) health care.
Cap and trade was supposed to pay for it all. No direct taxes on the little people, all indirect. I also think he not only is willing to be a 1-termer, he fully intended it. A second term means being held responsible for his actions. He wanted to shove "social justice" down our throats, whether we like it or not. Bush's deficits were nonexistant by comparison. Remember that Obama's -- even in his own rosy scenario -- exceed the sum total of those during Bush's.
In addition, the spending was in large part extorted by Democrats who held up Bush's international policies, not on principle, but to get pork. This was particularly true starting in 2007. Posted by: AmishDude at August 28, 2009 07:56 PM (T0NGe) 54

yeah, as Slu says, there are different types of govt spending. Obama's spending is the worst type: entitlement spending, for which there is zero return...so it's a shitty investment. Other spending, on such as, say, infrastructure, can be 'good' spending because it creates jobs and helps the flow of commerce, both of which generate revenue for the government in the form of taxes. So there is a return on the govt's investment. Posted by: His Holiness Tweet Paul II at August 28, 2009 08:23 PM (iD12c) 101

Not much. All they can do in 2010 is stonewall subsequent spending. There won't be the juice to repeal anything and override a presidential veto of the repeal legislation. Posted by: Purple Avenger at August 28, 2009 08:23 PM (jPJan) 102

People are starting to realize a lot of the supposed infrastructure spending isn't happening as planned. All those decaying bridges on the verge of collapse are being ignored in favor of "easy" repaving projects elsewhere. It was probably a big mistake to just hand piles of cash to the states to spend as they please. They're treating it as most people treat free money - recklessly. The argument they used against that was that tax cuts would "only go to pay off debt", rather than stimulating the economy through increasing spending. Which is a stupid argument, primarily because if the debt costs 9%/year (which is about a good approximation of what consumer debt costs) and the only spending or investing opportunities available to the person getting the tax cut are not worth that much, i.e. you can't find any investments paying more than 9% and the value of any goods you could purchase immediately with your tax cut was not worth continued 9% payments on the debt you didn't pay down, paying off the debt IS the most efficient allocation of resources. For those with no debt, a tax cut may or may not have been spent, depending on their perception of future opportunities, i.e. it may have made more sense for someone in, say, the residential construction industry, to save any tax cuts due to the chance of being laid off. The whole debate on the mix of tax cuts vs. spending was conducted at a completely superficial level by the political class. In other news, water is wet. And the government would not be able to provide anything but the most
basic public services. We would no longer be a great power (or even a
mediocre one), and the social safety net would evaporate," tax policy
expert and Syracuse University professor Len Burman wrote in a recent
op-ed cheerfully titled "Catastrophic Budget Failure."
When they say basic services do they mean just what the federal government is supposed to provide and not cradle to grave welfare and social services? I mean if it can bankrupt the welfare state it might not be a bad thing. But knowing Barry he'd wipe out the DoD budget so Peggy Joseph can sit on her lazy ass and live off of tax payers. The question isn't how much spending can be avoided, since the majority of it cannot be at this point. The real question is how to inspire or effect the sort of shift in understanding (on the part of the voting citizen as well as the leaders they elect) that discourages future spending, works to pay off what has already been heaped on, and-gasp-seeks to cut government spending and programs.
Speeding up the dawning of that understanding is even more important than making sure a bunch of R's get elected, at any cost, in 2010. Posted by: Fortunate Son at August 28, 2009 08:29 PM (FaLC9) 112

Things like repaving are really just routine maintenance too -- i.e. something that should be part of a state's normal budgeting process every year.
In effect, what the states have done is offset their general fund shortfalls and simply keep doing whatever maintenance they would have had to do otherwise, only this time using fed money. The whole "shovel ready" thing is largely a scam. Prudent state legislatures (ha, ha, ha) would have been budgeting all along for things like bridge replacements rather than treating them as some sort of exceptional expenses, because even the best built bridges don't last forever unless it was the Romans who built them to begin with ;-> The Romans put in some seriously sturdy shit that's lasted 2000 years. @ 166 Test classified me as a libertarian, which is pretty close, but I don't consider myself a dogmatic, capital L Libertarian.
I did have problems with some of the questions being too vague and misleading. For instance, the question about being "Too patriotic" -- well, I'd need to know their definition of "patriotic" and what constitutes excess. That kinda thing. Also, I didn't notice too many questions about foreign policy/military matters. But oh well. Posted by: Capt. Numbstick at August 28, 2009 09:34 PM (voIlD) 184
Not much. All they can do in 2010 is stonewall
subsequent spending. There won't be the juice to repeal anything and
override a presidential veto of the repeal legislation.
Posted by: Purple Avenger Disagree. There are all sorts of places where continuing authorizations can be blocked. They can even fail to authorize the Treasury's borrowing authority. Obama gets to blow the money for 2009 and 2010. If we get a clear majority, we can start clawing some of that money back. Posted by: Kristopher at August 28, 2009 09:34 PM (Jjzb5) 185

So, under our new currency regime, when you get held up and the mugger asks for dough, you could actually hand over a loaf of bread... just before shooting him? Eh, could be worse. I mean, he could ask for my underpants which would be bad 'cause that's where the profits really are. Posted by: AnonymousDrivel at August 28, 2009 09:35 PM (JamGx) 187

Math is so racist. Always telling us that some numbers are somehow bigger than others, forever demanding that the result of either side of the = thingy have to be the same. Always dividing, subtracting. Hateful shouts of "divide by 0 error" when we all know the 0 stands for 0bama. Sarah Palin and her bizarre statement that "a prime number can only be divided by itself and 1" even though NewsWeek, ABC and Geraldo Rivera have thoroughly disproven this.

In '45, the tax rate was 94% for those making over $200,000. As recent as '80, it was 70% for those making over $215,000. The thing is, because of inflation, those in '80 were more than likely hit much harder than those in '45, plus in '45 there weren't that many people making that kind of money.
All of that being said, Obama will simply monetize our debt and we will end up being the Weirmar Republic. No rationing, just milk that costs $1,000,000,000 a half gallon. Thanks 52% Posted by: shibumi at August 28, 2009 10:11 PM (OKZrE) 261

My prom story: All the pictures and bullshit are done, so I'm climbing into the car with my date to set off for the evening. Said car is loaded with alcohol, and some dumbass propped a bottle of schnapps up against the door. When I opened it, the bottle tumbles into my parents' driveway and goes off like a bomb. Everyone in the car, including me, freaks out. I just tell them to drive away and spend the rest of the night worrying about the ass kicking I'm in for when I get home. Imagine my surprise when I return home to find the bottle completely cleaned up. Not a word was said. No one ever mentioned it. I guess they decided to just give me a pass on it, surprising how anti-alcohol my parents were. Posted by: Dack Thrombosis at August 28, 2009 10:57 PM (P33XN) 298

Don't get me wrong, I am a very charitable guy and there are exceptions to all the aformentioned afflictions but this has been the overall effect of these programs on America I know people who have been collecting unemployment regularly since '80 under the "lack of work" guidelines. Basically, they use their part time job to supplement their unemployment income. It's become a lifestyle that will end when they get their gold watch from the government at 62. These are also the same people who are frothing for Obamacare. MYTH: "Taxes are going up and they're going up for a lot more people than those making more than $250,000. Why? Math."
FACT: Math is a very difficult subject, and one that is full of theorems and theories. The connection of this obscure field of academic inquiry to the "real world" is hazy and largely unknowable. The President has said that he will not raise taxes for those making over $250,000. This fact is echoed by the head of the conservative economic watchdog group Progressives for Economic Justice and Social Change, who says the Presidents plans are entirely reasonable and have been taken out of context by "math extremists." Despite these facts, many Americans still believe the persistent math myth. Posted by: The Associated Press at August 28, 2009 11:15 PM (PDt+D) 303

The states are going to complain about the amount of money the federal government is taking. Eventually they will want more of the tax money for themselves and more people will agree with that since they get more services that directly affect them on a daily basis from their cities and states. People are going to start to think the Federal Government is too big. Always wonder about the perks federal workers receive. The other day Fox had someone on who said that they don't participate in Social Security, they have their own, better pension plan. So that is in addition to their own choice of the best medical plans ever. Seems like their perks add up to more extra money so that explains why their salaries can be a little less than the private sector where your employer is contributing to your 401K, well mostly not anymore, and you are contributing to your health insurance. Essentially, the government employees have a good deal and they know it.

No tax free foundations. Cut the Congress pay and benefits and tie them to federal employees. End the Dept. of Energy, Education and Agriculture. Across the board 50% spending cuts.

Great exit line, PA. I'm sure you know Haiti provides NO services and redistributes most revenue they recieve (international aide?) amongst government officials and to certain member of the elite class that make up 20% of the population. Which is why no capitalist will invest there. I have two daughter's adopted from Haiti and I have spent a significant amount of time in that country. THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT IS ISSUING THE FOLLOWING ALERT
Due to the increased demand of our zeroes, they are now in short supply. Please conserve your zeroes. The Federal government needs all we can get. During the wars in other countries we asked you to conserve certain items so that our soldiers fighting over there would have the food and supplies they needed. Your country is calling on you again to show your patriotism by conserving our zeroes. This time we need more zeroes. There are more zeroes going out than coming in. Please cut back on your use of them. If you have any extras, please send them to us. Please send your extra zeroes to: Secretary of the Treasury Timothy F. Geithner 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue NW Washington DC 20220 He will make sure they are distributed where they are needed most. He is an expert on zeroes. Secretary Geithner feels that if we can link enough of the zeroes together we can end our financial crisis. Right now there aren’t enough zeroes to form a long enough link. Your zeros could supply “THE MISSING LINK” that supplies the zero that makes the number big enough to end the financial crisis. It is your duty as a citizen of the USA to do your part in saving, collecting, and sending us your zeros. You could start a local drive to collect zeroes, just like they did during the wars to collect metals and other items. Any patriotic citizen would be proud to give your group their extra zeros. You will be a hero to your community and to your county. You will be a "Zero Hero." As we did with the wars we fought all over the world, we need to pull together as a nation to end the financial crisis. We need to send Secretary Geithner all the ammunition he needs to fight this war. He needs your zeroes. It would be tragic if we were only one zero short of our goal. Don’t be THAT missing zero. If a soldier runs out of bullets, they have little chance of serving. If Secretary Geithner runs out of zeroes, we could loose this war. TRAVELING IN OTHER COUNTRIES If you travel to other countries, and they let you get some zeroes, please get as many as you can. Even if you can only get a few, that will help us end this economic crisis that much sooner. A zero is the same in any country, so the ones they use in the country you visit will work her in the USA. There is no limit on how many you may bring into the USA. Customs has been alerted, and any zeroes you bring in will be collected there. They will expedite the transfer of your zeroes to Secretary Geithner. Thank you ahead of time for doing your part to end our zero shortage.
