The Obit Ted Kennedy Deserves

Karl from Hot Air's Green Room has a great post about the MSM's differing treatment of the Robert Novak and Ted Kennedy Obits. For Novak, the Plame non-scandal is mentioned early, sometimes even in the second paragraph. Sometimes even in the second sentence.

For Kennedy, Chappaquiddick is only mentioned deep, deep into the article.

Good piece.

But the real find here is this Carl Cannon piece on Chappaquiddick and the media's selective memory.

I thought it was good piece as it explained why conservatives care about Chappaquiddick and liberals in the MSM are wrong to dismiss these concerns as merely held by "haters."

But then it got... appalling, as it recounted the Chappaquiddick Manslaughter in harrowing detail. Details I never knew about before. It's the little things that stick with you, and there are some little things here (not little at all for Mary Jo Kopechne) that truly bring home how vile this man was.

So, Howie Kurtz is surprised Chappaquiddick and Kopechne are hot search terms, and that some of the "comments are pretty harsh?"

He ought to read Carl Cannon's piece. You know what's harsh? Kennedy returning to the party from which he absconded with Mary Jo Kopechne and telling his (married) male friends not to tell Kopechne's (unmarried) female friends that their coworker and friend was currently lying, state of life or death questionable, beneath a river.

In order, he would (illegally) later tell police, to keep the women from going off on some hare-brained rescue attempt that might jeopardize their lives. See, he withheld news of the crash from Mary Jo Kopechne's friends to protect them.

He was all about protecting the women.

That is one of the several fresh (to me) facts that is sticking with me. Returning to a party and deliberately withholding the possible death of a woman (who might actually have been rescuable at that point; we'll never know) from her friends.

Treating Kopechne's life as completely disposable, and a mere political obstacle. Dead? Alive? Who knows; gotta sober up and start working on a story for the police (including claims of heroic rescue attempts, naturally). She was just an unconnected party-girl anyway; the world is filled with them, and won't miss her much.

On the other hand, there were issues of genuine consequence, such as contriving a story as to why exactly Kennedy was driving drunk to the beach with a woman not his wife.

It really is sickening stuff. I recommend that all those liberals in the MSM who can't fathom why we conservatives still care about a petty little manslaughter read particularly closely about Teddy Kennedy's long, heroic walk back to the party he just left, and the telephones he passed along the way.

One of which was no more than 150 yards from the site of Kopechne's eventual death.

Mary Jo Kopechne is, like, so DEAD.

Teddy, on the other hand, was, like, totally HAWT.

I dreamed of drinking Chivas with him and stumbling my way into the middle of a waitress sandwich.

Honestly, reading that account, I'm wondering if he killed her on purpose. Maybe he raped her or attempted to, and she was hurt in the struggle, so he dumped her body, figuring that it would be easier to laugh off a drunk accident than a rape/murder.

Not like Kennedys haven't done that exact some thing before.

This is why I see red when certain bloggers open comment threads on Kennedy's death, and then straightaway ban unkind words about Kennedy's life.

Sigh, palin steele. If he had gotten help immediately (assuming his account is even close to correct), she well could have been saved when SOBER people went to get her out. Even in a sinking car, there is still air, and it could take awhile - 30 minutes, maybe an hour, maybe more - for that air to get forced out. Fast help well could have saved her.

But, you know, it was a judgment call, and who are we to question the Lion of the Senate?

No links, sorry, but I am sure others here have heard or read the same as Ted is eulogized in various places....

The "tragedy" of Chappaquiddick IS mentioned, but as just that, a "tragedy", making it sound as though something terrible had happened to Ted Kennedy (!)and not to Mary Jo.  Then, mention is made of he was able to "rise above" it, and "move on". What the fuck?

I swear, it makes it sound like he was the one who was done against.

He went missing for those hours to walk off whatever blood alcohol levels he had and that was what mattered to him.

18 30 minutes, maybe an hour, maybe more

mary jo trapped unconscious under water in a car

Autopsy said she suffocated.  The diver who found her body said she was in an air bubble.  She was conscious and knew she was going to run out of oxygen.

(I got this information from a 1989 Time article that interviewed jurors, who noted that the prosecution was not allowed to introduce any information that made Ted look back.  I'd post a link, but I'm at work.)

For you Dum dum, I posted this on another thread but it seems more appropriate here.

In Honor of Ted Kennedy and our new "Chappaquiddick Care" Health bill. Complete with the snappy new slogan: "We Promise to show you the same level of care that Teddy Kennedy showed Mary Jo Kopechne"

From Wikipedia

In addition to the working telephone at the Lawrence Cottage, according to one commentator, his route back to the cottage would have taken him past four houses from which he could have telephoned and summoned help; however, he did not do so. The first of those houses, referred to as "Dike House", was only 150 yards away from the bridge, and was occupied by Sylvia Malm and her family at the time of the incident. Malm later stated that she had left a light on at the residence when she retired for that evening.

Earlier that morning, two amateur fishermen had seen the overturned car in the water and notified the inhabitants of the cottage nearest to the pond, who called the authorities at around 8:20 am. A diver was sent down and discovered Kopechne's body at around 8:45 am.The diver, John Farrar, later testified at the inquest that Kopechne's body was pressed up in the car in the spot where an air bubble would have formed. He interpreted this to mean that Kopechne had survived for a while after the initial accident in the air bubble, and concluded that

Had I received a call within five to ten minutes of the accident occurring, and was able, as I was the following morning, to be at the victim's side within twenty-five minutes of receiving the call, in such event there is a strong possibility that she would have been alive on removal from the submerged car.

Farrar believed that Kopechne "lived for at least two hours down there."

49 You are a fool to believe that msm does not already know or that a liberal would read this and care. T.K. could have, later, if given legal immunity, come out and said he did it, even bragged about getting out of her pregnancy on top of it, and they would still be for him. Beyond the sympathy of both his brother's (deserved, if Joe and Teddy are examples) deaths, most liberals believe the end justifies the means, you know, a few cracked heads for the good of all, a couple of sacrificial lambs to keep our god-politicians happy and in power, you know. Come on, every body does it.

Posted by: Doom at August 27, 2009 02:44 PM (TIVfM)

50 One of the more unknown "lionizations" of Ted Kennedy was in one of Piers Anthony's books, "With A Tangled Skein".

There's an unnamed politician in there who is destined for greatness but targeted by the Devil for death.  He's saved from an assassination attempt, but a young woman who was with him at the time took his car and drove off anyway, as the car gets knocked into the water and she drowns.

It's later told to the person who saved him that he may have lived, but his politically career was irreparably damaged.

Thus, the real reason that Ted Kennedy was never President Kennedy was that the Devil destroyed his career, not that he owned a car other than a VW Bug. [/sarc]

5 Teddy made some mistakes regarding the Mary Jo incident. However, the fact remains, that even if he went to one of those houses and called the police, Mary Jo would not have been saved. Too much time had passed.

Dummy, that's not why he didn't try to help.  You and I both know, however you deny, that he went back to his hotel to clear the alcohol from his system. Also hoped that something would happen so the police wouldn't find out.

Then when Ford pardoned Nixon, he actually stated publicly that "There are two kinds of law in this country, one for the poor, and another for the rich and powerful.  That and the fact that he named his dog "Splash" indicate that he had no concience to bother him about this event.

4 I wonder if he saw her every time he fell asleep sober.

I would bet that that's why he seldom fell asleep sober.

77 Ted had no intention of risking his fat bloated ass to help anyone else. His first concern was to get his fat greasy ass out of that car, then the water. Then his derelict mind went to working on extracting his big ass from the mess he was up to his neck in. Not one moment did he waste thinking about the girl, and he sure didn't want her talking to the police or the press. That is the simple truth that is suggested by a lifetime of debauchery and drunkenness.

I used to have a saved internet spot for Ted Kennedy the truth about Chappaquiddick and More, based on a book written about the incident. I read it in the late 70's early 80's.  It had/has interviews with different parties, including locals and Kennedy cronies and all sorts of details about the island, the fateful night, the Kopechnes, Ted's big brother Jack, the AG, etc etc. I just tried to use said link, and it won't open. Hmmmm. I think the author was named Damore, not sure though.

He was a hypocrite of the highest order, and only the fools in Washington DC and Massachusetts who voted for him think he should be honored.

if i am not mistaken humans can go 12 minutes without air before they suffer massive brain damage and death. While i agree it is unlikely she would have been saved, you can't let your leftist ideology explain away what was at the very least manslaughter, DUI, felony to not report a fatal car accident, and maybe even attempt to conceal a crime.

110 Palin, you are a coward. That much is obvious, and your admission of such is not terrible in itself.

However, your comments here are simply making excuses for those moments in your life when courage may be needed; moments whose outcomes you have already surrendered to the whims of fate instead of your own actions.

Those who say "who knows how anyone would act if x" are missing the opportunity to encourage themselves and others to prepare to do the right thing.

Heroes are rarely born. Far more often, heroes are molded by the expectations of their peers.

I'll help you out here Palin, if nobody else will. I expect you to do the right thing. I expect that you, unlike Ted Kennedy, will act with courage when a life is in the balance. I believe enough in your basic humanity that you will make the phone call, or pull someone from a burning car, or from the path of a bus.

I believe that you won't freeze in that moment, Palin.

Six years or so isn't very recent. However, what was recent was the moon landing, just two days prior to Chappaquiddick.

Someone on another blog---I'm too senile to remember which--- mentioned something I'd like to share.  Dominick Dunne died yesterday, too.  A weird coincidence.

For those who don't know, Dunne was a writer who devoted much of his life to exposing the way the powerful get away with murder (literally.) His (thinly disguised) novel on the Martha Moxley murder has been credited with the re-opening of that case and the eventual conviction of Michael Skakel, Ethel Kennedy's nephew.  It's called A Season in Purgatory and it's a great read.  It really shows you how the Kennedys & Co. spoil and protect their sociopathic brats. Dunne's articles in defense of the victim in the William Smith rape are also excellent.

Just wanted to mentioned Dunne and pay special tribute to him.

I caught a glimpse of the news last night and they were talking about Ted and it just floored me the way they talked about Chappaquiddick. It wasn't a tragedy that resulted in the death of woman due to a man's cowardice and negligence. No, it was a tragedy that it stole the presidency away from Ted Kennedy. Really? Too bad that happened because Ted lost any bid for the presidency? I have no words to describe how vile I think that sentiment is.

I said Teddy made a mistake.

A mistake is hitting a mailbox post. Driving off a road at a 15 degree bend into a pond, leaving your passenger to drown, and waiting ten hours to notify police is a crime, usually negligent homicide if you're not a Kennedy.

I've been to the bridge at Chappiquidick. The bridge has been replaced, but other than that things are the same. The road curves very gently at the entrance to the bridge, so someone would have to blasted out of his mind to miss it. The water is not very deep, and the bridge is very close to the water. It's not as daunting a prospect to pull someone out of a car there compared to a similar situation in an urban area. Eddie just didn't give a good goddam about her, at best.

Ed Kennedy skated on a felony manslaughter due to family connections. Bad enough, but the attempts to whitewash him over the years turn my stomach.

The Kennedys were idols. My home had the, now admittedly a joke, pictures of Pope John and JFK on the wall.

The legend lives on from Chappaquiddick on down
Of the lecher they call Uncle Teddy
His car, it is said, never gives up its dead
When Ted's hand on the wheel is unsteady.

With a girl he did bed, not his wife, it is said
Edward plied her with drink and with ardor
The car he did drive, it was not built to dive
When the drunk Senator gets too horny.

The rain on the road made a slippery hold
But that's nothing a sober man's fearing.
Yet old Teddy knew, did the poor girl too,
T'was a drunk Ted doing all the steering.

So Edward wired in, he had water coming in
And his Senate career was in peril
And later that night when his lights went out of sight
Sank the wreck of the Edward Booze Barrel.

Does anyone know where the love of God goes
When the wait turns the minutes to hours
The searchers all say she'd be alive today
If Ted acted like a human being.

He might have called help, but he thought of himself
So he lied to her friends and her neighbors
And all that remains is her face and her name
And a smug Teddy reeking in office.

The legend lives on from Chappaquiddick on down
Of the lecher they call Uncle Teddy
His car, it is said, never gives up its dead
When Ted's hand on the wheel is unsteady.

Last night, PBS was reshowing their documentary, The Kennedys.  Their description of the party before the crash was absolutely pathetic.

Friday, July 18, 1969. As the Apollo 11 crew approached the moon, fulfilling a goal set by John Kennedy, Edward Kennedy was in Massachusetts, fulfilling still another family obligation—attending a reunion party of young women who had worked for his brother Robert's last campaign. One of them was Mary Jo Kopechne. The party was held on Chappaquiddick Island, off Martha's Vineyard.

Calling a get together between six young women and five married (plus one unmarried) men a "reunion party" is pretty rich.  Then to frame Ted's attendance at the party as "still another family obligation," as if there was something noble about a married guy partying with campaign staffers, takes the cake.

if this happened to anyone of us, we don't know how we would've acted.

Speak for yourself, pussy. If I see someone get into an accident, or is hurt, I stop and help. Just like most people do. Why, because we're not quivering cowards or soulless sociopaths. I undestand that you most likely scream uncontrollably at such horrors like too-close bumblebees, but not everyone is like that.

I read Mike Kelly's article that was linked last night and my overarching take from it was a cold revulsion. Men like Ted Kennedy and Bill Clinton see women as simply playthings; temporary, discardable pleasures that serve no other purpose than their own appetites. (And this is a non-partisan flaw, there are plenty of people on both sides that are shitty to women.) I've known men like this for years, and it rarely shocks me anymore. What I don't get is why women are still drawn to these scumbags. Are power and money  that intoxicating?

so it was apparently in only 4 feet of water... and he couldn't get the girl out of the car???

nd Kennedy supposedly reported the incident at 9am -- but the fishermen had already called it in at 8:40 am
so did he really even call at 9?

Or did the cops come to talk to him at 9 and allow him to claim he had contacted them?

how can a man not manage to move a woman's weight, especially when water is buoying it? All he had to do was open the door, or pull her through the open door HE got out of

Laura Bush was 17 at the time. She was going 50 in a 55 zone, and she was not drunk. She had an “accident”.

In any reasonable State of the union Kennedy would have been charged with felony DUI which here carries a sentence of 25 years. Kennedy left her to die, tried to establish a cover-up, and was drunk.

That's the sound of the undertaker nailing the lid of Ted Kennedy's coffin shut to close a disastrous chapter in the history of the US Senate.  Ted Kennedy was famous for serial lying, perjury in the Willie Smith rape case, fondling and attempted rape of a waitress, and acute alcoholism.  Ted Kennedy's dead, and good fucking riddance to a bad actor.  Also, fuck the rest of the Kennedy also and that includes Caroline.

OT but this is vomit inducing from the Politico.

"After a mid-August trip to America's national parks and a weeklong vacation on Martha's Vineyard, President Obama plans ...

... to take a little more time away from the office next week.

Obama will head to Camp David on Wednesday, Sept. 2, and stay through the weekend, White House spokesman Bill Burton told reporters in a Thursday briefing.

Joking that it may have been "wishful thinking" to suggest Obama's current trip out of Washington would coincide with a news-free week, Burton quipped that the president needs a "break from his vacation."

Why not mention all his other notable bullshit? How about during Reagan ? I think the word is TREASON?

Ted Kennedy and the KGB

It was a May 14, 1983 letter from the head of the KGB, Viktor Chebrikov, to the head of the USSR, the odious Yuri Andropov, with the highest level of classification. Chebrikov relayed to Andropov an offer from Senator Ted Kennedy, presented by Kennedy’s old friend and law-school buddy, John Tunney, a former Democratic senator from California, to reach out to the Soviet leadership at the height of a very hot time in the Cold War. According to Chebrikov, Kennedy was deeply troubled by the deteriorating relationship between the United States and the Soviet Union, which he believed was bringing us perilously close to nuclear confrontation. Kennedy, according to Chebrikov, blamed this situation not on the Soviet leadership but on the American president---Ronald Reagan. Not only was the USSR not to blame, but, said Chebrikov, Kennedy was, quite the contrary, “very impressed” with Andropov.

Here's the best line in the article :  Many of these liberals and their supporters on the left literally see the conservative Republican in the Oval Office as a greater threat to the world than the insane dictators overseas that the likes of Reagan and George W. Bush were/are trying to stop. That’s not an exaggeration. Just ask them.

I give the Kopechne family a pass on the deal. At that time the Kennedy family was powerful enough to destroy their lives or just have them disappear. They knew that Ted would never get justice in MA so the money was the closest thing. Plus the money may have been part of an offer they 'couldn't refuse'.

195 Joseph's Kennedy's overwhelming desire for power created a family with all the negatives of "inherited wealth" with no sense of responsibility or consequences. One really wonders if Joe Sr. made a "faustain" bargain with the Devil himself.
The result a pox on the Kennedy DNA....
The Kennedy's have always been their own worst enemies...so the family has a history of self created disasters brought on by lack of judgement and control. The assaination of Robert and John (may they rest in peace) are the exceptions.
Teddy's behavior with Mary Joe was truly criminal, can't blame her family for taking money...would you like to have faced down the Kennedy's and their lawyers in 1969..(unless you are Tony Soprano).
TK was an endless steam on bad behavior, that has been replicated by the clan far and wide.

196 #181 Maetenloch   I firmly believe that at time that period, it was still a family disgrace to have a "loose" daughter running around with married man. A go to Church every Sunday family woud have been quite upset at this. The shame would have been widespread. Drowning Mary Jo is not the worst thing Teddy Kennedy did.

When the US pulled its ground troops out of South Vietnam, we promised to lend air support to defend them from the North.  When North Vietnam invaded, Ted Kennedy forced Congress to reneg on that pledge, dooming South Vietnam.  As a result, 165,000 South Vietnamese died like rats in re-education camps.  Another 1.6 million Vietnamese fled for their lives, a quarter million by boat, of whom a third died at sea.

Mary Jo was just the beginning.

It has been difficult, and I've been tempted to reach out a few times, but I've resisted.  There's no point.

Family, on the other hand, is a different matter.  It's difficult to know that people you grew up with and respected are flaming lefties or just too ignorant and self-absorbed to care about the rape of our country.

I once removed a man from a car in and accident in a hurry cause the thing started to burn.  It did not get bad, but I had no way of knowing that in advance.  I needed to get him out and the fire company had not arrived yet.  I was going to the mall with my sister and mom when I saw the accident happen.  When I got him out, he only had one leg.  But he seemed fine.  He told me he lost his leg at Pearl Harbor!  Not in the accident! Which explained everything then!

231 I am so glad you blogged this.

You see, it's not a D or an R issue at all. It's simply a shit humanity story. That Kennedy let a woman die, hid it, denied it, evaded all consequences and eventually paid Mary Jo's family 140k...speaks volumes not just about Kennedy but an entire justice system unable to grow a spine and prosecute this piece of shit. And a bunch of idiots who continued to reward him at the polls every few years. Yea, you know who you are. I wouldn't have voted this loser in as dogcatcher.

Why would I ever think a chronic alcoholic could come to terms with what a shitty human being he was? I wouldn't. And so I'll have just a piece of sympathy for a spiritually diseased Kennedy-a little more than he showed Mary Jo and her family. Even if its very little.

Yes.  You are correct.  Thanks for mentioning it.  I rember the "boat people" at an army base then.  We went by the razor wire fences with armed soldiers guarding them.  We were young teenagers in a Ford Bronco and a driver who did not like them their.  She was another friends aunt.  Of course a heavy drinking, slutty aunt, to be sure, but a lib none the less.

DUM DUM, DIM Bulb, Dipshit, dogshit, candy ass...I keep descending in my attempt to describe you with the proper invective. SO, let me humbly try it this way:

Whether you are a man (a pussy of a man) or a woman ( a miserable C**T) or some surgically modified cross over SUV/SOB...I read your pointless, argumentative ramblings attempting to provide cover for the lowest form of leftist scum, pro big-smothering-nanny state-marxist assholes and I come to only one conclusion.

You would play the shill for HELL itself, you would defend a child molester who was a leftist, you would cover up a serious crime and perform oral sex on a farm animal if your political masters indicated you should do so.

Over all, the lack of depth, lack of insight, lack of humor, and the pasty, basement apartment living adult child mooching off its/his/her/whatever's parents feel of your posts reminds me of needing to take a shit. But having to hold it until you get home...a gassy, unpleasant cramping sensation. That's you.

That's you, the unpleasant sensation of having to take a shit, maybe at Lowe's or WalMart or in the middle of your drive to work. You, Dum Dum, remind me of my excrement, as does Howard Dean, Duh one, also known as Urkel X, and Slow Joe Biden, the Special Olympics Veep. His limousine is probably a damn short school bus with you sitting in the back seat, picking your nose and eating it, or eating your own scabs. Keeping your own company, that.

Dum Dum, you're less than pathetic: you're worthless. As in being without value of any sort. I'd make a joke about loofa pads and scrubbing your mama's ass or something, but that's been done to death, I'll leave you off my 'worth posting about' list and just remind you that that last three 3! child molesters in Congress were Dems, Libs, and stayed until they were voted out, finally. You'd like em...

Guara-damn-teed.

Your side likes child predators, and ending the lives of old folks to save tax money so it can be wasted on other bloated programs. You are lower than the shit that flushes to my septic tanks. At least shit can fertilize.

You are, in fact, worthless, judging by your posts defending the indefensible. Like alibiing for dead shithook philanderer and drunk lecher Ted SwinCoach Kennedy, the Gin on the rocks senator. He was a piece of shit and a well connected manslaughterer (womanslaughterer, to be correct.). He should lie in state in a trash dumpster covered with rotten food and catshit.

Can I be any more condescending and rude to the likes of you?

Sure, just watch your screen. If you're not loofaing the dried semen off your mother's ass. Tough work with the fans not working in that little bathroom huh?

Nasty. You. Shit. Quite the team.

You make my skin crawl. Like watching MJ around school kids, Kennedy wobbling drunk around young women at political rallies...

In the summer of '69 (I was 15 at the time) my family drove to central Louisiana to visit relatives.  My uncle was an investigator for the outfit now known as Experian.  At one point during the visit, my uncle took us to see his office.  In those days before computers were ubiquitous, his office was mainly a huge room full of file cabinets.  While there he regaled us with stories on some of the famous people of the time and some of their various pecadillos know to him and his employer, but not generally known by the public.

And yes, he mentioned Teddy Kennedy, as a well-known drunkard and womanizer.  Being a naive youth who idolized the Kennedys at the time, I was rather scandalized by this, and didn't really believe him.

A week or so later the Chappaquiddick story broke, as did a number of my delusions about the Kennedy clan.

When they pulled Mary Jo from the car, she had pushed her head up into the rear window in the back, where the bubble of air was the longest. She was alive for some time in that car, waiting to drown.

It is quite possible that if he had gone to the nearest house that she could have been saved. But Kennedy needed to get to his spin doctors first, and that is what made it too late.

Oh, and get this when reflecting on the benevolences of Mr. Kennedy:

Meanwhile, listening to ”Reflections on Sen. Kennedy … Lion of the Senate” on the Diane Rehm Show on the drive home last night, I was deeply moved to hear Newsweek’s Ed Klein tell guest host Katty Kay about Kennedy’s love of humor. How the late senator loved to hear and tell Chappaquiddick jokes, and was always eager to know if anyone had heard any new ones. Not that Kennedy lacked remorse, Klein quickly added, seeming to intuit that my jaw and perhaps those of other listeners had just hit the floorboards. I gather it was a self-deprecating maneuver on Kennedy’s part, exercised with the famous Kennedy charm, though it sounds like one of those “I guess you had to have been there” things.

Chappaquidick was a tragic misfortune that unfolded in a way that warrants examination, if not condemnation of bad judgment  and behavior on the part of Ted Kennedy. In this day and time, due process woud surely have served Mary Jo and her family justly .The incident and how it was handled was tragic on so many levels...

However, Right or Left, you cannot argue that Ted Kennedy was a true statesman.  Many have forgiven him, and focused on his social advocacy and his life work that focused on the less fortunate.

Let the man rest in peace.
