NYT Liberal Economist and Obama-Booster Paul Krugman: I Believe in the End the Government Option "Would, in the End, Kill the Private Plans"

Remember, before the public knew about this, this was being sold by de facto DNC spokesmen as a good thing.

Now that they're not selling it to liberals, anymore, but are instead selling it to moderates, the intended "killing" of the private insurance industry becomes a "myth."

Paul Krugman, as an early booster of the private-plan "killing" government option, can resolve the supposed debate here. We have video of him at least twice stating that the government option is intended to, and would, kill private coverage.

As someone who was an early booster, before most people knew the intent of this plan, and as an economist, and as an editorialist for the NYT, he could resolve this debate by simply stating "Yes, as I myself have said on several occasions, this plan would kill private insurance."

But as far as I know he has not commented upon the issue since it became a controversy. He has simply avoided it, because he knows his honest assessment would hurt Obama.

So he lies through omission. Reading Krugman's columns now you'd never at all be alerted to the fact that there is a major controversy regarding this aspect of the government option, an aspect he long championed. (Well, he says in a perfect world without politics he'd take us to single payer right away, but he's willing to support the government option as a sneaky way to accomplish that goal without alerting the public exactly what's afoot.)

Will Krugman ever address this major controversy in which he appears to occupy a central and dispositive role?

Paul Krugman's brain is so large I wonder how he fits a yarmulke onto his skull.

Geniuses like him make me swoon with a giddiness which invokes memories of a little schoolgirl who is just discovering her nascent sexuality.

I want to make mad, passionate yiddish-hippopotamus love with him and have a brood of little half-breed circumisized hippopotamus love-calves running around our home.

We will eat kosher, except for the bacon.

Speaking of Edward Kennedy...

What has he ever done for us, the little people? Well, I 'll tell you in four sentenes: Teddy Kennedy, while in the Senate never did anything for the people other than spend the taxpayers money on groups of people who did not pay taxpayers. So, in essence, Ted Kennedy was nothing more than a wealth re-distributor.

Kennedy never spent a dime of his own or a minute of his own time on us, the little people. He made a living taking money from the earners and giving it to the non-earners, the non-Americans, and the anti-Americans.

The implication is that everyone knows that the ultimate goal is a government-only health plan. Which is true, and kind of frustrating that it isn't the conservative main talking point, rather than death panels.

Just one more example, in an already bulging file, of left-wing willingness to lie about their intentions and policies, in order to sell them to the electorate.

I almost feel bad for them, seeing as how they have to conceal their true agenda all the time in order to get elected.  Must be tough having to calibrate your statements to suit the audience and the particular need of the day.

The problem here is that in a way it is very difficult to explain how this will come about.  It is an A B C D progression, when only about 1/3 or the American populace can follow more than 3 steps.  In other words most people are dumb.  Remember that the average IQ in the U.S. is something like 90, and that 70 IQ points is borderline mentally retarded.

What's all this stuff about "in the end"? Ya mean, if you win this debate and healthcare gets Obamatized, in the end we will get stuck in the "end"? In the end as in, we the people will be sodomized?

26 Krugman is running one of the best cons I've ever seen. Spend your entire academic career focusing on international trade in the third world. Write a couple of books declaring how much you hate GW Bush and how much of a liberal you are. Parlez that into an NYT column and regular TV & radio experiences where u spend 99% of your time pretending to be an expert in domestic social and fiscal policy, and ranting against Republicans. Then win a Nobel prize -- again, for your work in international trade in the Third World -- and use that to justify your domestic policy rantings. Then, when you advocate and dissemble in favor of nakedly irresponsible domestic policies, you sill get treated as though everything you said is unimpeachable -- because of your expertise in third world international trade.

32 You all are idiots. Read what he actually said. He said if the public option bankrupts the private option, it is only because the market has proven that the a public option that doesn't have to make a profit is better, despite all the right wing dogma about government messing everything up.

Krugman also says the most likely outcome will be that the public option leads to reduced costs for everybody, as the private companies cut overhead costs to compete with the public option

35 Krugman is saying that he thinks that the public option would be popular with the people it serves.  Because of it's popularity, he thinks it will be the center of the system.  If his assumption that people like the public option is wrong, then clearly his prediction does not apply.

So where is the problem?  Either there will be a change because the public option helps people or there won't be a change because it doesn't.  Either way, it's just people voting with their money.  All Krugman is doing is saying what he thinks that outcome would be.  If you held these opinions, wouldn't you expect the public option to dominate the market?  Seeing as you don't hold these opinions, you should have nothing to worry about, because the public option will not dominate the market if it sucks.

That being said, Krugman is probably wrong because he's an economics wonk, not a political wonk.  Many countries worldwide have programs like the public option but have no push towards single payer.  Creating a single payer system for the entire American public (unlike offering Medicare to only some people) is waaay more complex then congress will touch.
