Avatar Trailer

Tipped by several people (CDR M, Dave @ Garfield Ridge, Ogre Gunner). It's James Cameron's new full-CGI movie (though the actors are real, just altered a bit for that CGI look).

A split in geek reaction. CDR M says it looks like what Aliens would have looked like if Cameron had advanced technology, Dave says it's "HALO in Ferngully." (I'm not sure what that means but it's not good.)

I don't know. I'm not big on CGI.

movies with Will Smith saying, "Aww, hell nah!" and shooting an alien are 28% better than movies without Will Smith in them saying, "Aww, hell nah!" and shooting an alien.

22 I can't stand CGI. It's the ruin of science fiction as far as I'm concerned.

One of the best science fiction movies made in the past decade was "Primer," which was filmed on $3000 and had 1 very basic special effect.

Science fiction is about expressing universal truths of the human condition through a futuristic medium...not eye candy and weirdness.

The fact that Cameron basically wrote the whole thing makes all this technical innovation a waste. It's gonna be moronic, in the bad way.

Just think if this much effort had been put in to some real SF-- Ringworld, Ender's Game, The Mote In God's Eye... sigh.

It sucked. It had so many holes in it, it reminded me of Andrea Mitchell's face. It can be blamed on terrible editing, I suppose, but in the end it looked like a small-budget student film.

A very confusing plot, only to be explained at the very end by one character's true motivations.  Extremely boring too.

32 "t had so many holes in it, it reminded me of Andrea Mitchell's face."

Nice metaphor, but 2001 didn't have holes in it? Oh and when you're dealing with 5 different timelines, holes are inevitable. They're called "stuff that the movie doesn't explain." All good movies have them. The ones that feel the need to make everything obvious to the audience in the end suck.

I thought the look suited the gritty nature of the film. It was science fiction done in a garage, not some super high tech spotless lab with giant monitors everywhere.

But I guess that just proves my point. CGI has ruined science fiction as literature. Now it's more about the visuals than the plot and theme. (e.g. 300)

#27  - Ender's Game can never, ever, ever be a movie.  I do not trust Hollywood to do it right.  Also, you just can't make a movie where one naked pre-adolescent kicks another naked pre-adolescent in the balls so hard he bleeds from his head and dies.  You just can't.  I don't think you can have child actors act out such traumatic scenes as there are in Ender's Game.  Or, you have to make the characters older, which also a ride on the failboat.  Or, you make it all CGI, and get older voice actors.

Speaker for the Dead they could totally do; plenty of white-guilt there, and less children traumatizing each other.

On topic, I think except for the plot, Avatar looks like fun.  Not good, but fun.  However, I don't like being scolded when I see a movie, or listen to a CD, or otherwise try to enjoy myself.

only to be explained at the very end by one character's true motivations.

Yeah, the 'meat', or the best part, of the story was frikkin narrated in the last few minutes by one of the actors while we, the stupid audience, watched a re-cap of scenes and followed along.

I was like, wait, is that what was happening this whole time, 'cuz that looked like an entirely different movie from what I've been watching for the last 70 minutes.

I thought the look suited the gritty nature of the film. It was science fiction done in a garage, not some super high tech spotless lab with giant monitors everywhere.

I can forgive a low-budget SF film...IF it has a good enough story behind it.  The average person is lost soon after all the time-machine in a time-machine crap starts happening.  That's the most confusing part.  I get where the one guy deceives his buddy by doing all the crafty moves, but the film needs to explain (in much clearer fashion) how that stuff all worked out.

A nice try, but failed in execution.

52 Science fiction is about expressing universal truths of the human condition through a futuristic medium...not eye candy and weirdness.

That's what written SF is for. The A/V stuff is purely eye candy.

That's primarily because movie makers aren't capable of expressing anything deeper than "I wanna bone you" without spending time on the characters and on exposition. But exposition and characters don't put butts in the seats in Africa, Asia, and Europe -- eye candy, naked chicks, gun fights, and Blame Whitey do.

To tie into something Insty reference just the other day -- look at the "Starship Troopers" movie. The book was about our duty towards one and another and society, about why men fight and sacrifice, and an attempt to square personal liberty with the requirements of the survival of the human race -- the bugs and shit were thrown in to make it a fun read. The movie turned a free society with limited franchise into a Nazi fetish camp, turned Tagalog-speaking Filipino Juan Rico into Doogie-Freaking-Howser, turned the MI suits into "armor" lighter than American football players wear, turned the bugs from an alien yet obvious intelligence into extras from "A Bug's Life", and tossed in some gratuitous nudity.

There may be an occasional art-house flick that rises above the tits-lasers-and-bugs formula, but...

56 From Wiki;

Jake has unwittingly been recruited to become part of this encroachment. Since humans are unable to breathe the air on Pandora, they have created genetically-bred human-Na’vi hybrids known as Avatars. The Avatars are living, breathing bodies in the real world, controlled by a human driver through a technology that links the driver’s mind to the Avatar body. On Pandora, through his Avatar body, Jake can be whole once again. Moreover, he falls in love with a young Na’vi woman, Neytiri, whose beauty is matched by her ferocity in battle.

As Jake slides deeper into becoming one of her clan, he finds himself caught between the military-industrial forces of Earth, and the Na’vi – forcing him to choose sides in an epic battle that will decide the fate of an entire world.

Sounds like more leftist crap. BTW, ever notice how much SF has changed from the noble humans fighting hi tech aliens to evil, hi tech humans fighting peace loving aliens?

Not to mention the "mobile infantry" engaged at spitball ranges against enemies that are far less dangerous if kept at range.  Let's not forget the plamsa crapping bugs shooting down starships orbiting so close together that if one dodged the plasma it would HAVE to hit another ship.

The aliens in District 9, though, seemed particularly well-done.

I agree 100%; I have got to the point where I cringe when they take a book by someone like Heinlein and turn it into a movies.

The worst recent case comes from the “Sword of Truth” series that was made into a TV series. The only thing used from the book was the characters names. The plot became just another remake of big tittied barbarian fights evil men who outweigh them by 150 pounds and win.

I really liked "Primer." Sure it was complicated, but sometimes it's nice to have a movie linger afterwards and spark interesting conversations. All movies have plot holes...most especially ones that deal with time travel. I loved the low-tech feel of it and wish more science fiction would be done this way.

BTW, there were plans to make "Ender's Game" into a movie...and that idea died just this past January. Most of the reasons seem to be that O.S. Card was involved in the development and did not like the direction it was headed. In fact, he mentioned something about it nothing turning into some CGI film.

As for "Avatar," I thought the big deal about this was not the special effects, but how the 3-D was so different and organic...which is impossible to see in an online trailer. I've seen plenty of 'liberal' minded science fiction and enjoyed it...I'll definitely be checking this one out.

@56

That's the plot from Dances with Wolves

So now we get Dances with Blue Space Lizards

Way to be original.

Oh and Cameron, hot space girls are GREEN.

You know a movie is going to suck hard when it can't cobble 2 minutes' worth of engaging material together.  Bad movies can have bad trailers, but good movies don't have bad trailers.  I mean come on, are you going to tell me Cameron was given this amazing budget just to scrimp on decent advertising?  I'm really disappointed, too, I thought it was going to be the first REAL 3-D movie, something that was more than just a gimmick.

"The Last Airbender" teaser trailer is over on You Tube and it looks considerably better.  I'll probably go to both, but there's only one Avatar I'm now looking forward to.

97 I have really enjoyed all of Cameron's movies up to this point- except for Piranha 2 that is, but I have to say for a reported budget of $250 million (and some insiders claiming closer to $500 million), I have to say this left me underwhelmed.  Looks like it's barely a step up from the cinematic to the upcoming Star Wars game: the Old Republic.

98 Hey, were those aliens wearing lace wigs?

Posted by: Ostral B Heretic at August 21, 2009 12:20 AM (OtE8p)

99 The aliens in District 9, though, seemed particularly well-done.

I think a lot of that seems to be District 9 played to the 3d's format's strengths.  The way 3d rendering works, it does hard things (chitenous exoskeleton, for example) pretty well, but isn't that great for rendering soft things with several semi-transparent layers on it (like squishy humans with skin over fat over muscle).  It's part of the reason why human characters look 'liquidy' all the time.

It's just become one of those tools that's way overused.  It's fine for limited stuff, like the powersuit and aliens in District 9, but it gets annoying because the brain picks up, even subconsciously, when the entire environment is 3d rendered.  Kinda a 5% 'off' in the environment shown 10% of the time the brain glosses over, but a 5% 'off' through an entire 2 hours gets noticed...at least for me

100 I must be way out of the loop. The plotline sounds unrelated to anything in the actual Avatar cartoons, which I'm forced to admit were quite good overall.

Decent plots with good twists, good cartoonery (and the occasional CGI), and quite well written with a lot of snarky humor.

101 I wonder if it's possible for Hollywood to lose enough money to realize that people are sick of being told they suck ass.

It seems like they can only make good movies by accident these days.

Posted by: Merovign, Strong on His Mountain at August 21, 2009 01:09 AM (bxiXv)

102 I don't plan on seeing this, but if I find myself in the theater for some reason, I'm just gonna yell out "This movie blows goat!" about ten minutes in.

Posted by: Ostral B Heretic at August 21, 2009 01:13 AM (OtE8p)

103 A tad late to the party - but the paraplegic-mind-melding-with-alien-body thing is straight out of Poul Anderson's "Call Me Joe" (short story) from 1957.   The core story is the same thing:  Useless body, takes control of alien body, overcomes hardships, becomes more attached to useful body than useless body, begins to resist Earthly control, gains freedom and seeks own destiny as alien being.  Of course, this has been bastardized and completely turned into another Earth-people-who-speak-American-English-are-evil Hollywood project.
