Obama Not Done With The Public Option Yet?

So says Marc Ambinder’s source at the White House who claims HHS Secretary Sebelius “misspoke” yesterday when she said a public option wasn’t a necessary part of a deal.

Truth or misstatement, combine it with Sen. Kent Conrad’s statement that a public option was dead in the Senate and Sunday was a bad day for Obama.

Some are speculating Sebelius might have been launching a trial balloon. If that’s the case, consider it shot down.

A healthcare reform deal abandoning a public (or "government-run") option for consumers could cost as many as 100 Democratic votes in the House, one House Democratic lawmaker warned Monday.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.) asserted that rumored compromises on a Senate bill to win centrist votes would torpedo healthcare reform's prospects with liberal members of the House.

"If the president thinks he's cutting a deal to get Senate votes, he's probably losing House votes," Weiner warned during an interview on CNBC this morning.

Obama’s problem (well, one of many) is that he seems to really believe a lot of his own PR bullshit. Remember when Obama was going to be the great healer, the man to span the bitter divisions of the nation? How’s that working out? It turns out there are things people believe in strongly and aren’t willing to give up (they cling to them, one might say) simply because that’s what Obama thinks is good for them.

Right now, he’s neck deep in an issue where the vast majority aren’t willing to sign over their future to him and he can’t figure out how to force them to, even with huge majorities in both houses of Congress.

Being President is hard.

BTW- Was Sebelius reported to Flag@whitehouse.gov for spreading false information?

SASKATOON — The incoming president of the Canadian Medical Association says this country's health-care system is sick and doctors need to develop a plan to cure it.

Aren't we lucky to have all these shining beacons to show us the way? Damned lucky, I say.

4 I think they're still going to try & pass some of what's in the bill, even if they do so in amendments. In other words, some of this is going to pass, but not the way they wanted.

5 And the White House will command the House and Sentate to just pass the God Damn thing, don't read it, don't debate it, and for God's sake, don't let the public know anything about it.  Oh, what about the media?......crickets....

6 Still.. be on guard for anything in the form of 'Health Care Reform' or insurance or whatever the meme of the day is..

Is it just the public option that's dead from the bill or is the entire HR 3200 dead?

8 Of course he can force this bill on us, and probably will. However, Obama wants it to look like he's the Great Savior of the Uninsured, and wants the rest of us to take to the streets in celebration over his glorious policy victories.

And if not, well, there are those FEMA re-education camps...

Maybe having your press secretary and the heads of your political party start referring to American citizens that disagree with you a "mob", saying they are paid off by evil corporations, and comparing them with Nazis is not a good way to persuade them to agree with you? Especially when you are referring to over 50% of the American people. IMHO

24 No one goes under any bus.  They are just regrouping and approaching the landing from another angle.  Look at the firestorm from the dems/libs, do you actually think they will give up any of their "we need a public option" chant.  Then look at the republicans/conservatives and Grassley.  He was just on msnbc with ratigan.  He is pushing co ops but then talking about "the exchange" so this is not simple and furthermore has this been explained to anyone?  He beautifully dodged all the good questions and all you could hear while he was talking was the ever honest Chuckie Shumer saying that in the end they will pass the bill with or without the republicans.  If they are talking about an exchange and they are saying that unions are against them becasue they have great hard won healthcare and they need it as a bargaining chip to entice people to join the union (oh wait aren't they getting a non sekret ballot sneaked into sone bill in the dead of night?).   What is wrong with helping people join or form groups?  What is wrong with the government paying for the few who will be uninsured after all the group joining?  Well they mention the insurance oligarchies so guess that is still on the old table.  So it is all still there but they don't want you to see it in the age of transparency.

The message this week needs to be clear - the Democrats can not get their house in order.  They have the house, the senate and the presidency.  There can be no blaming the Republican opposition on this one - its a Democractic food fight.  Plus, it works it self well into the Democrats can not govern meme that will help in 2010.

26 I think Obama believes all of his own PR bullshit.

I think the health care bill will include a public option.  It will be the precursor to government takeover of the health care industry, and it will move government bureaucrats between people and their doctors.

We are dealing with people who are acting 'for our own good' and believe we are too stupid to know what is best for us.  They will do what they want and let ACORN and amnesty take care of the rest.

Here here! Just a caning though? I'd rather they go through this:

Westley: No. To the pain.

Anyone who posts "First": I don't think I'm quite familiar with that phrase.

Westley: I'll explain and I'll use small words so that you'll be sure to understand, you warthog faced buffoon.

Anyone who posts "First": That may be the first time in my life a man has dared insult me.

Westley: It won't be the last. To the pain means the first thing you will lose will be your feet below the ankles. Then your hands at the wrists. Next your nose.

Anyone who posts "First": And then my tongue I suppose, I killed you too quickly the last time. A mistake I don't mean to duplicate tonight.

Westley: I wasn't finished. The next thing you will lose will be your left eye followed by your right.

Anyone who posts "First": And then my ears, I understand let's get on with it.

Westley: WRONG. Your ears you keep and I'll tell you why. So that every shriek of every child at seeing your hideousness will be yours to cherish. Every babe that weeps at your approach, every woman who cries out, "Dear God! What is that thing," will echo in your perfect ears. That is what to the pain means. It means I leave you in anguish, wallowing in freakish misery forever.

31 See, I think the "democratic food fight" as you call it is totally by design.  The "blaming it on the republicans" theme failed so on to a new theme.  Let's try it all and throw all the crap against a wall and see what sticks?  It is clear that they understand insurance even less than they understood what a CDO was and how they could be collateralized and sold.  What will the nect thing to come out be that they will somehow collateralize the premiums?   The bad part of this entire mess is that no one trusts anyone anymore.  Some, if the people don't trust the whole lot of them, how are they going to accomplish anything without a firestorm of opposition?

BINGO.

I don't know if anyone has seen that great YouTube of Reagan talking about socialized medicine, but he talks about just this idea... that socialists just want to get their foot in the door and then once they have the bill, they can expand it as far and wide as they wish.

That is the plan for Obama and Co. now. So we cannot get complacent.

I didn't realize until I was doing some research yesterday that the Republicans have some alternative plans out there that sound pretty good (despite what Obama keeps claiming that any opponents of Obamacare have no plan and just want the status quo). There is the Patients' Choice Act by Rep Paul Ryan (R-WI) and Sen Tom Coburn (R-OK). There is also this:

In the 1990s, Republicans tried to change Medicare into a defined-contribution model, more along the lines of the plan that federal employees enjoy. The Republican-controlled Congress passed such legislation in 1995, but President Clinton vetoed it. Seeing that Medicare costs were out of control, Clinton set up a bipartisan Medicare Commission headed by John Breaux (D-La.). The Breaux Commission came up with a similar plan in 1999. Democrats killed that too.

When Republicans controlled Congress and the White House, from 2003-06, they provided Health Savings Accounts and prescription coverage under Medicare for the first time. With the Democrats regularly using Senate filibusters, those were significant achievements.

Republican introduced precursors to the Patients’ Choice Act in the House in July 2007, May 2008 and September 2008. All died in the Democrat-controlled House. There is also the Health Care Freedom, introduced in the Senate this June by Sen. Jim DeMint.

But there will be no "rationing"!!!

The Fraser Health Authority confirmed Thursday it intends to cut surgeries, seniors' programs and services for the mentally ill to help deal with a budget shortfall of up to $160 million.

However, it said the emergency department at Mission Memorial Hospital will stay open.

Confirmation of the cuts, expected for some time, came as the authority's board of directors met in Mission Thursday. The board said 10 to 15 per cent of elective surgeries will be cut in the latter part of the 2009-10 fiscal year, with slowdowns already scheduled for the Olympic period.
