Why Are People Who Never Visit the White House Site for Information Getting Emails from David Axelrod?
Update: Is It Because Axelrod Has Put Out a "Viral" Email He Wants His Cultists to Spam Out?

Major Garrett is asking Gibbs about this. Gibbs is just saying he doesn't know and denying that anything is going on.

There is actually an easy (possible) answer: Lefties are signing up righties they don't like for email blasts. They do that sort of thing.

Whether that's the case here, or there's something more... interesting at hand, I don't know.

Jake Tapper, by the way, did not ask about Doctor AxelTurf.

Miss Marples Writes:

What we have here are people who communicated with the White House as a governmental entity who are getting e-mails from Obama's political group.

That is a violation of law, if that is what happened, and that is why Garrett's question is important.

Yes, I know that, but what I am saying is that trouble-making lefties may be signing people up for email blasts. It's not like anyone verifies those are real sign-ups.

But yes, it could be quite a bit more than that, too.

I am just offering one possible innocent explanation, not endorsing it. I want to know the answer myself. That's why I posted this.

Ah: I see my error. I said they'd "never visited White House sites." I am corrected: They visited the White House as a governmental, non-partisan entity serving the public, not Obama, and yet are getting emails from David Axerod, who represents Obama's political arm. Which is not a "public service" thing, but someone serving only Obama and his political ambitions.

Thanks for correcting.

Is This the Explanation? Axelrod is putting out an email he himself says is "viral" (that is, he's telling people to make it viral) in the header.

Perhaps lefties are merely following the orders of the High Priest of their Cult and sending it to everyone they know.

CBS' account:

His Internet outreach reflects growing concern at the White House that the president’s efforts to enact an overhaul of the health insurance system in America are encountering unexpectedly tough resistance and are in trouble.

...

At the start of Axelrod's e-mail, which he addresses to "Dear Friend," he quotes the president from Tuesday's event, speaking out against "wild misrepresentations" of the health care plan he wants. He said opponents were citing provisions "that bear no resemblance to anything that's been proposed."

...

Axelrod urges his e-mail recipients spread his message and "start a chain email of our own."

He clearly doesn't mind if his e-mail goes viral.

Note well that those claiming "AstroTurfing" are now sending out top-down, DC-birthed, party-coordinated "viral" messages to counter real viral emails.

1 No.   What we have here are people who communicated with the White House  as a governmental entity who are getting e-mails from Obama's political group.

80 Palin's latest Facebook statement:

Yesterday President Obama responded to my statement that Democratic health care proposals would lead to rationed care; that the sick, the elderly, and the disabled would suffer the most under such rationing; and that under such a system these “unproductive” members of society could face the prospect of government bureaucrats determining whether they deserve health care.

The President made light of these concerns. He said:

“Let me just be specific about some things that I’ve been hearing lately that we just need to dispose of here. The rumor that’s been circulating a lot lately is this idea that somehow the House of Representatives voted for death panels that will basically pull the plug on grandma because we’ve decided that we don’t, it’s too expensive to let her live anymore....It turns out that I guess this arose out of a provision in one of the House bills that allowed Medicare to reimburse people for consultations about end-of-life care, setting up living wills, the availability of hospice, etc. So the intention of the members of Congress was to give people more information so that they could handle issues of end-of-life care when they’re ready on their own terms. It wasn’t forcing anybody to do anything.” [1]

The provision that President Obama refers to is Section 1233 of HR 3200, entitled “Advance Care Planning Consultation.” [2] With all due respect, it’s misleading for the President to describe this section as an entirely voluntary provision that simply increases the information offered to Medicare recipients. The issue is the context in which that information is provided and the coercive effect these consultations will have in that context.

Section 1233 authorizes advanced care planning consultations for senior citizens on Medicare every five years, and more often “if there is a significant change in the health condition of the individual ... or upon admission to a skilled nursing facility, a long-term care facility... or a hospice program." [3] During those consultations, practitioners must explain “the continuum of end-of-life services and supports available, including palliative care and hospice,” and the government benefits available to pay for such services. [4]

Now put this in context. These consultations are authorized whenever a Medicare recipient’s health changes significantly or when they enter a nursing home, and they are part of a bill whose stated purpose is “to reduce the growth in health care spending.” [5] Is it any wonder that senior citizens might view such consultations as attempts to convince them to help reduce health care costs by accepting minimal end-of-life care? As Charles Lane notes in the Washington Post, Section 1233 “addresses compassionate goals in disconcerting proximity to fiscal ones.... If it’s all about alleviating suffering, emotional or physical, what’s it doing in a measure to “bend the curve” on health-care costs?” [6]

As Lane also points out:

Though not mandatory, as some on the right have claimed, the consultations envisioned in Section 1233 aren’t quite “purely voluntary,” as Rep. Sander M. Levin (D-Mich.) asserts. To me, “purely voluntary” means “not unless the patient requests one.” Section 1233, however, lets doctors initiate the chat and gives them an incentive -- money -- to do so. Indeed, that’s an incentive to insist.

Patients may refuse without penalty, but many will bow to white-coated authority. Once they’re in the meeting, the bill does permit “formulation” of a plug-pulling order right then and there. So when Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) denies that Section 1233 would “place senior citizens in situations where they feel pressured to sign end-of-life directives that they would not otherwise sign,” I don’t think he’s being realistic. [7]

Even columnist Eugene Robinson, a self-described “true believer” who “will almost certainly support” “whatever reform package finally emerges”, agrees that “If the government says it has to control health-care costs and then offers to pay doctors to give advice about hospice care, citizens are not delusional to conclude that the goal is to reduce end-of-life spending.” [8]

So are these usually friendly pundits wrong? Is this all just a “rumor” to be “disposed of”, as President Obama says? Not according to Democratic New York State Senator Ruben Diaz, Chairman of the New York State Senate Aging Committee, who writes:

Section 1233 of House Resolution 3200 puts our senior citizens on a slippery slope and may diminish respect for the inherent dignity of each of their lives.... It is egregious to consider that any senior citizen ... should be placed in a situation where he or she would feel pressured to save the government money by dying a little sooner than he or she otherwise would, be required to be counseled about the supposed benefits of killing oneself, or be encouraged to sign any end of life directives that they would not otherwise sign. [9]

Of course, it’s not just this one provision that presents a problem. My original comments concerned statements made by Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel, a health policy advisor to President Obama and the brother of the President’s chief of staff. Dr. Emanuel has written that some medical services should not be guaranteed to those “who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens....An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia.” [10] Dr. Emanuel has also advocated basing medical decisions on a system which “produces a priority curve on which individuals aged between roughly 15 and 40 years get the most chance, whereas the youngest and oldest people get chances that are attenuated.” [11]

President Obama can try to gloss over the effects of government authorized end-of-life consultations, but the views of one of his top health care advisors are clear enough. It’s all just more evidence that the Democratic legislative proposals will lead to health care rationing, and more evidence that the top-down plans of government bureaucrats will never result in real health care reform.

31 Major Garrett is the only reporter who will ask a tough question. I wonder how long he will keep his WH press job. Can Obama lean on Fox News and get him kicked off?

FOX knows they're on the shiite list, including Major.  Gibbsy won't even call on him in press conferences, and they won't consent to a Mocha interview with FOX.  Just in the last couple of days, Glenn Beck mentioned that Major's lucky to get called on once in a typical presser.

Just read this:

Iowa Republican Sen. Charles Grassley, who is working with Finance Committee chairman Sen. Max Baucus on a health care compromise, has just issued a statement saying that concerns about end-of-life issues in the House health care bill are entirely legitimate.  In addition, Grassley says the Finance Committee has "dropped end-of-life provisions from consideration entirely" because of those fears and also because of concerns that they could be "implemented incorrectly."  Grassley's statement:

The bill passed by the House committees is so poorly cobbled together that it will have all kinds of unintended consequences, including making taxpayers fund health care subsidies for illegal immigrants. On the end-of-life issue, there’s a big difference between a simple educational campaign, as some advocates want, and the way the House committee-passed bill pays physicians to advise patients about end of life care and rates physician quality of care based on the creation of and adherence to orders for end-of-life care, while at the same time creating a government-run program that is likely to lead to the rationing of care for everyone. On the Finance Committee, we are working very hard to avoid unintended consequences by methodically working through the complexities of all of these issues and policy options. That methodical approach continues.  We dropped end-of-life provisions from consideration entirely because of the way they could be misinterpreted and implemented incorrectly. Maybe others can defend a bill like the Pelosi bill that leaves major issues open to interpretation, but I can’t.

89 Derak:

It is illegal to use governmental facilities for political purposes.  That is why there is a DNC and an RNC,  separate from the White House.  It is why the president has to reimburse the government for the air fare to a fund-raiser (which is why presidents schedule government events on the same trip).  It is why congressmen cannot make fundraising calls from their offices on Capitol Hill.

If people wrote to the White House asking or complaining about legislation,  it is illegal for the White House to get those e-mail addresses and have Axelrod,  who is a political person,  use it.

Those of us old enough to remember Nixon and CREEP (committee to re-elect the president)  remember that this was also a bit of trouble Nixon got into.

It is an excellent opportunity,  though,   for Republican senators and congressmen to rant about this on the floor,  and for lots of good ads and talking points on talk radio and cable.

We are stuck with Obama until 2012,  unless he gets bored and resigns.  Our only option is to use every bit of ammunition to bring down his popularity and make sure he is not reelected.   This is a pretty big piece of ammunition.

He shouldn't be.  I don't want an advocate press.  An objective press is a win-win in my book.

Me, too.

I think I was overly gentle with regards to Jake, however.  It's not that he's not sympathetic to the protesters... I think he's actually in the WH camp on this one.  He was one of the reporters who basically asked "what more can we do" at the press conference the other day and he's been soft balling questions, including one about how the attendees were selected that completely miss the crux of the issue about the town halls.

Still, he's useful because he isn't at Fox News... so there is at least some chance that libs will actually read/listen to some of his stuff.  I can cite his work to my lib friends, but I can never (effectively) use anything that I found at Fox.

115 Speaking of manufactured mobs, can anyone give me a legitimate reason for the SEIU or any other union to be at town hall meetings agressively agitating for a bill that (as I understand it) specifically excludes them from its pernicious effects?

Miss Marple: Axelrod is a "special adviser to the POTUS".  He's not reviewable by the Senate, but he's not a DNC political operative either.  He holds the similar title that Karl Rove held in Bush's first term.  He's Senior Adviser to POTUS.

The emails I get from Axelrod are from the White House.  They're sent by executive branch servers.  The White House is permitted by law to get out there message.  They're not permitted to send this message to people that never signed up to receive it.  That's the problem with flag@whitehouse.gov.  The fools are dodging what a form based website would do.  They're wearing snake skin here.

It's wrong.  They don't want to answer questions about using emails sent to flag@whitehouse.gov as being added to the White House mailing list.

119 The left, when they push for a sacrifice of personal freedoms which they assure us are neccessary for the progress of the human race, clings to the romantic notion that they're fighting on behalf of the oppressed against a powerful system that holds all the cards.

The righteousness they derive from their disproven premise, and the perceived inhumanity of the forces tarrayed against them, justifies morally transgressive behaviour in the service of their cause, for example lying to the 'masses' because they don't know what's best for them.

Listen to Miss Marple.  She is correct.  I am sure  the whitehouse.gov addy----NOT the flag one-- is the one collecting our addresses.  I sent an email to the president at whitehouse.gov in February as an American citizen on a specific issue.  I have received 8 emails since then (several before the flag addy was even published). 4 of the emails show the sender as President Barack Obama and 4 show David Axelrod. Other than requesting a reply to my February query I did not ask for additional emails or announcements to be sent-- although I suppose there could be something somewhere buried in the small print.  I am not going back on the site to find out though!!!  Most have been about health care but one was about sotomayor.  IMO someone at the WH had to go through all the past emails to sort the ones that were friendly or at least neutral (which mine could be considered.)  All I receive now are being collected in my spam filter.  Even tho they are aggravating me I like to see what they are up to.

Axelrod's position as senior advisor to the president technically makes him a white house employee rather than a DNC one, but his role in this PR project is blurred and the the emails definitely smack of politics.
