Flashback: When the Left Protested Bush, the Media Saw Only "everyone from grandmothers and students to veterans and mothers pushing strollers"

I cite this as an example, and I trust not even a liberal will dispute that when it came to anti-war protests, the protesters were unfailingly described as "just normal folks," spontaneously animated to gather without, apparently, any organization at all; somehow, it seems, they psychically intuited where their fellow "just normal folks" might be banging their drums and shaking their paper mache effigies of Bush and Cheney.

Ah, but that was when dissent was patriotic.

After the meeting, everyone from grandmothers and students to veterans and mothers pushing strollers marched along Lake Merritt to Oakland City Hall for an afternoon rally at which Lee again spoke.

That's noted leftist anti-american firebrand Rep. Barbara Lee. She spoke with Sean Penn.

I searched for "grandmothers" for this because I remembered just about every story about the wonderful anti-war protests mentioned the grandmothers by the fourth paragraph.

Here, a grandmother (absolute moral authority conferred by wisdom of long years) instructs us how important it is for citizens to accept the claims of their president at face value and in respectful silence and with absolutely no back-talk or sass-mouth whatsoever.

Wait, that's not what she said at all.

"The only thing this government needs is for the people to be silent and then they can do whatever they want," said Joan MacIntyre, a 74-year-old great-grandmother from Oakland. "As long as the government keeps doing what it's doing, I'll be out in the streets."

At some point, the article does mention that these protests actually were (gasp!) organized, but seems quite unbothered by this fact. No nefarious machinations are imputed.

At the rally, which was organized by a coalition of Oakland community groups, folk singers led the crowd in song and a rapper rapped about violence in the streets.

Of course, omitted from that -- and omitted from nearly all of these "everyone from grandmothers to students to veterans to mothers pushing strollers" stories -- is that most of these protests were organized, in whole or in part, by radical socialist anti-american organization ANSWER.

So, in the case of a leftist protest, the protesters are depicted sympathetically, the reporter striving to stress their diversity and normalness so that any reader can see himself or herself in the protests.

And there is no hint of disrespect for the fact that yes, at some point, an email alert went out and people were told where to assemble.

On the other hand, when Obama opponents assemble (and that includes Democrats in good standing), the press strives to paint the protesters as not only weird and possibly dangerous ("carrying swastikas") but also deceptive, in that they're somehow "faking" their anger, or have been paid to be there.

Well, to be fair, some people are in fact paid to be at these protests. Some people belong to a hierarchical organization and are, in fact, part-time paid profession protesters, trouble-makers, and intimidators. Some people know exactly what to do and what to yell and who to push, because they do it every three or four months and it is, effectively, part of their job description.

But these people -- these people -- the media "forgets" to mention.

SEIU & Castor organize a townhall and announce it at the last minute as to reduce opposition voices. The townhall was packed 1/2 w SEIU people.

When supporters of healthcare freedom (ie, anti-BigGovHealth demonstrators) were prevented access to the townhall they began to shout, bang windows & doors.

Some of these people are even told specifically to show up just to provide "cover" to the Congressmen they're trying to support and influence:

Another one of Ms. Jorge’s tips is to “Address the [member of Congress] directly with a positive message: Remember, and they are getting beaten up by right wing zealots in these meetings.”

HCAN Communications Director Jacki Schechner said protecting elected officials who support their favored reforms was necessary given the contentious nature of some town-hall meetings.

Ms. Schechner said conservatives are baiting lawmakers into holding town-hall meetings, “so [lawmakers] can get yelled at and they don’t want to feel unsafe and uncomfortable.

In fact, the media will go so far as to rewrite their stories to omit damaging admissions made in the first published version. Here, Tampa Bay Online originally included this admission from the SEIU...

Asked earlier today about possible disruption at the event, Kim Diehl of SEIU said, "We're prepared. We have strategies to deal with it if it should come up."

...but then deleted it. After all, violence broke out, and you can't have people getting the wrong -- right -- idea that maybe the "strategies" the SEIU contemplated included physical intimidation.

The media also suddenly stops reporting specific details when those specific details damage the the crowd they're trying to portray as "everyone from grandmothers to students to veterans to mothers pushing strollers:"

Ironically, the only photographic evidence of a physical encounter that the paper published showed a woman, later identified by Henke as local Democratic operative Karen Miracle, shoving an Obama critic in the face.,

Identified by Jon Hencke, a conservative-leaning blogger, not the media. I don't want you to get the impression the MSM pointed this out.

And so it goes on. Union thugs show up at rallies to "provide cover" and engage in rough-house "strategies," but the media makes no mention of it (or, having made mention if it, quickly deletes it from the record).

And meanwhile opponents of Obama are all apparently on the payroll of insurance companies or otherwise illegitimately... um, informed of protests (apparently it's illegal for conservatives to talk to each other and organize themselves) and are furthermore just there to make trouble and carry swastikas.

It is breathtaking. It is breathtaking.

I wanted to write this last night but it was so enormously... breathtaking, it's the only word I can think of, I wasn't able to do so.

I'm still not.

I am literally stunned.

I cannot believe the MSM's new heights of double-standards, hypocrisy, and frankly anti-American behavior -- yes, anti-American behavior; the MSM is attempting to rule that 50+% of the American public is per se illegitimate and entirely excludable from the public debate.

50% + of the public disagrees with them, and there is no getting around that, so they've simply decided to make overt and a binding "rule" what they've long believed silently -- 50% of the public will simply need to be disenfranchised if we're ever to "get things done" and impose our progressive agenda.

Breathtaking.

Semi-Correction: I got a bit careless in conflating the MSM with the Democratic Party. Nancy Pelosi, for example, "reported" people "carrying swatikas" (and suspiciously upscale and stylish swastikas, one imagines, according to Barbara Boxer's "too well dressed to be real citizens" thesis); that wasn't the MSM, per se.

Although they did not demand her evidence for this assertion nor debunk it.

So I did conflate the two bodies a bit, but given that the MSM simply regurgitates talking points directly from DNC faxes, I hope people can forgive me for forgetting the two are, nominally, separate entities.

If they were actually separate entities, one would imagine the media would eventually ask an administration accusing opponents of "astroturfing" about the fact that Obama's campaign manager was the acknowledged "gold standard of Astroturf organizing." And he was called such not by a partisan operative, and not even after he became Barack Obama's chief strategist.

He was called that by Business Week, and his mastery of Astroturf was acknowledged long before Obama was anything more than Bill Ayers' beard.

Our emphasis should be on their violent crackdown on free Americans, and the right of free Americans to use the 1st--and, if it should come to that, 2nd--Amendments to regain their liberty.

2  My vote for best-descriptive word goes to "treasonous."  This country is having a rebirth, and it's going to be a difficult process.  Good will triumph, and when it does, we're going to have to recommit to the laws on the books, and treason is one of them.  Seriously.  The people fomenting this dissent, from the top on down, need to be locked up.

Russia couldn't/wouldn't embrace democracy, freedom and full-throated capitalism, even though the door was wide open for them to do so.  This country is too steeped in liberty and self-reliance to accept or even live with (for a short time) the totalitarianism that is Obama.  It's just not in our DNA.

21 I was reading about one "town hall meeting" where a large section of the audience seating was reserved for union members - actually open public seating reserved for some citizens who apparently remain more equal than others.

Time for a bit more dissent. If I go to a town hall and see "reserved" seating such as this, I'm sitting there and not moving. I'll not move to the back of the room and they'll have to arrest me to make me give up my seat. Then I'll be consulting an attorney.

Another post from AoS that is incredibly on point and expresses much of what I have been feeling, but have not really articulated, even to myself.

I'm all for keeping a sense of humor and not over-reacting during the madness that is the Obama administration, but I agree 100% with Ace that this is indeed breathtaking and stunning. Even though the liberal bias of the media has become dog bites man stuff, it has become so blatant, hypocritical, agenda driven, one-sided, and over the top that it is almost a parody of itself.

Ace, please keep up the good work, these points need to be driven home again and again. I do feel some people are beginning to slowly wake up from their slumber.

This is the issue that might kill the dem's agenda because it is so infuriating that even nonpolitical people are starting to see how bad it is becoming.  I will admit that I am a conservative that would never vote for a socialist like Obama. I generally keep my nose to the grindstone and gripe to my family about all these things that the dems and media (BIRM) do to piss me off but now I am going to actually get out and protest.  There is a "listening" tour event in Birmingham this month and I have requested a seat - I will try to ask a question as to why the congress and union/government workers won't be put on this "wonderful" health plan.  The media and the arrogant dems have fired me up - I am now listening to talk radio as of 3 weeks ago and talking to people about my beliefs even when I know that they might call me racist just because I don't agree with dear Messiah.  It is quite freeing - I am learning to embrace the labels that the left applies to me and mine.

We are not acting like a constitutional republic because the structures that enforce a republican (small r) model have been systematically weakened.

Right now, the tea parties are a legitimate grass roots phenomena, and hopefully the movement can prevent further federal consolidation.

The facts of the matter is that we MUST learn out to get the message out past the lying dogs in the media. We MUST work to get people on the news shows who will speak out about this sham of a health scam bill. 

 

It has become obvious that the wonks that run the Republican Party are not interested in speaking out against it. They want to push a modifying scam-lite bill and work with the communists.

 

What needs to happen is for some of the “tea party” people to get interviewed by the local press and do the setup so that the responses can not be edited to death or at least do like the IL utility did a few years ago. Have someone else filming side-by-side. Then get the video out there on U-Tube.

I'm getting to the point where i really believe we are a facist nation. Our media lost objectivity long ago, during the election they became cheerleaders and advocates, but this? This seems criminal to me.  This is pravda/isvestia. I realize most people that want to can find the truth on the internet, but what about those people who still watch the big 3 networks to get their news. We all know that it will be framed as "Violence between the right and left" and not what it has been in reality or is even plain to see in the videos which is "SEIU and other Unions attack citizens".  We truely as falling into something different. I don't remember any of this stuff happening during hillary care in the 1990s. I don't remember this stuff during the 2000 election. I have never in my life (25years) seen political violence like this incited not AGAINST the government in the 1960s, but BY the government and its allies.   Also the media, while always biased, has never been such an arm of one political party. Again i know they always lean democrat, but this is journalist fraud.  The country hasn't seen it this bad since William Randolf Hearst.

I am really worried about this stuff, and to be honest, angry.   I feel like there is no going back.  I know the Left complained about Bush, and while i wasn't a huge fan, he never sent "shock troops" to attack anti war protesters. During the run up to the Iraq war he never told the public to report on people spreading "disinformation" against the possible reasons for invading Iraq.  Bush, while a reckless spender, didn't aim to nationalize industries. TARP was created under the concept that the companies would pay the money back and the government would then no longer have any power over those businesses. Obama is going to nationalize some 15 percent of our economy, without plans to ever get it back. On the contrary it appears as though once they get a foot in the door that they will push their way through entirely. Obama broke bankruptcy laws to ensure the government and UAW gained controll of GM at the expense of the secured debt holders and ther tax payers. GM will NEVER be able to buy its ownership back from the government, but that clearly was the plan all along.

I could go on for pages, but I am genuinely concerned. At the beginning of the OBama admin, i felt my concern was like that of the Left wing during the Bush admin, essentially that he was damaging our country, however i am getting to the point where I think Obama is going to make changes that we will never be able to undo. Think of all the shit FDR did that we haven't gotten rid of 70 years later.

I don't think we are there as a facist nation yet. After all, we are -so far- still "allowed" to show up and protest or make our views known without fear of being arrested.

But I think you make some very good points and raise very valid concerns. I remember when Clinton was President. I disagreed with most of his policies and what he was trying to do. But I never thought they were really going to be able to institute any truly radical ideas (partly because of some Republican control in govt. at the time), and some of what they were doing was almost humorous in a way. And despite his leftist background, I never really thought the man disliked his own country; and as I recall, he never hesitated to debate Republicans and engage them. We just did not share the same vision, and that was OK.  

It is a totally different feeling now. I believe Obama believes a socialist model is where we need to go, and he is driving the train right over anyone who dares get in the way. There is a possibility that within a year or two of his taking office we could wake up and see ourselves  irreversably transformed into a country headed for European style socialism. As many have said, healthcare is the ballgame. He wins that, he's WON. If he loses, well, he's going to be running uphill for a while.

I must confess that I did not know Brooks Brothers sold so many jeans, capris and shorts.

If it was just regular people disagreeing you might expect to see a little back and forth yelling, maybe some pushingt.  People do have strong opinions and tempers get frayed.

However, it upsets me to see video of people in T shirts advertising that they are union members.  Maybe they aren't as clever at disguising themselves in khaki and denim as the right-wing drooling mobs.

I'm not usually much for conspiracy plots, but it is unnerving to think that the organization on the left is trying to create violence to make those who have real concerns look like lunatics.  The people in these videos look just like the people I see everyday at the grocery store, Walmart, work, etc.

The President has again shown that he is incapable of leading an entire nation.  He wants to keep us all divided by giving everything some sort of lable: racist, thugs, mobs, Latino-American, African-American, rightwinguts, etc.

I am also not much into going to rallies, but I am looking for one now!  Pity my husband outgrew his Brooks Bothers suit.

Yeah UAB – which is as blue as you can get.  Ten years ago, I ended up quitting my PhD program due to the harassment I experienced as being a lone conservative within the department on this campus.  It was the best decision that I ever made even though I am still working among the blue people.  You don’t work for the county or city, do you? 

 

It will be tough to bite my tongue at the “listening” tour but I am going to keep my head down and not offer my opinion unless or until I can get a microphone.  I am a pretty shy person but this has really fired me up and I am tired of silently sitting back.

 

I have been working on my dad to reload for me and just recently he told me to start collecting my brass.  Of course, that is probably because my mother goes through his ammo faster than he can buy it for her. 

 

I would love to have a moron meet-up here in Alabama.  Heck I was thinking of going to the next Atlanta one so I am even willing to drive a few hours to meet-up with like minded folks.

Exactly!  I say that to my dem friends all the time – taxation without representation.  I am a Shelby county resident also and it drives me crazy to have occupational taxes taken out.  I joke that I am going to throw the office coffee in the Cahaba to protest being taxed to work there.

 

I am embarrassed to admit this but I don’t usually pay attention to local politics.  The only other time I got motivated about a local issue was when I first moved up to Birmingham for grad school in 1993 when they were trying to get the Dome built (mapes?).  I see that this issue has reared its ugly head again.  I do know what you mean about Birmingham/Jefferson county issues but surely there is a non-corrupt Democrat that fits all the requirements.  Did you hear Sheila Smoot is running for Artur Davis’s seat?  Is that scary or what?

 

We really should have a Birmingham moron meet-up.  Who knows there might be more than the two of us in Birmingham?  Plus I am the lone gun nut in my social group in Birmingham and it would be nice to have other gun nuts to drag around.
