| Taxing the Middle Class to Pay for More SpendingWell, Damn, You Don't Think I Actually Read This Blog, Do You? See the post below for Drew's thoughts on this and the excerpt from the first link. We excerpted the exact same bit. Economic illiteracy from ABC News and the Treasury Secretary: Look at that first sentence. They're back to claiming outright that the U.S. can tax its way to prosperity. Not spoken--perhaps not even considered--is the economic truth that taxes are not good for the economy. Too much dead weight loss. Taxes may be good for a spendcrazy government still looking to pay off supporters, but they are not good for the economy as a whole. And there is no mention of that other time-honored method for reducing deficits: not spending so much of my money. This way Obama can break his promise that 95% of Americans would see no tax increase and claim with a shrug: "Desperate times..." Convenient times, too, since the Administration is considering extending unemployment benefits by 13 weeks. At present, unemployment benefits run for 79 weeks in the hardest-hit states (read: blue states). That's a year and a half of weekly payments while the recipient looks for work. That's a year and a half plus 13 weeks where the employed, who pay income taxes, subsidize the unemployed, who do not. Don't expect much protest from the GOP, though. Jim DeMint already said Republicans will support the extension. Which leaves me wondering what guiding principle leads him to believe that 92 weeks of benefits is okay? If 92 is okay, how about 100? Or lifetime benefits? I'm being disingenuous. I know very well that DeMint and his fellows are afraid of being framed as "mean and heartless" during the Great Recession. At heart, the problem is not unemployment benefits. The problem is that the government--in the hands of the Democrats--has done little to resolve our economic woes and probably exacerbated the situation. Now there's little choice but to treat symptoms like unemployment instead of the underlying disease.Comments1
Anyone get the feeling sometimes that this administration hasn't been entirely forthcoming with regard to its plans for the country?

The unemployment insurance here in NY is the only thing keeping me in my apartment. The extension would be great news since it is impossible to find work right now in NYC. Also our benefits are taxed and we don't get that money back, so we do pay income tax on our benefits. If it were so easy to get a job and get off the dole believe me I would in a second. So how about it, if anyone out there is in a position to hire a fellow moron here in NYC, here I am. Ace, you can go ahead and give my email to anyone interested in hiring a smart hardworking church going conservative. Short of that occurrence, this extension is actually desperately needed.

It is the same in Michigan, if not worse. If we extend the unemployment, we're in more debt. If we don't, more people lose their homes. Lose/lose either way. Worst part about it? Contrary to the state run MSM, I don't see the economy getting any better, so there will have to be more unemployment extensions, since no jobs will be created. In fact, if health care goes through, more jobs will be lost. Thanks 52% Posted by: shibumi at August 02, 2009 01:04 PM (OKZrE) 14
Yes, damn those Republicans that won't stop Obama. We sure showed them by not voting for them. Let's really show them and all stay home the next election too. Let's let the Democrats take more and more control until the Republicans finally figure out we're serious about our conservative principles. We're so serious about our conservative principles we'd rather see none of them implemented rather than compromise on a single one.
I know. If we had a 3rd party to vote for that would really show the Republicans. That would teach them. Maybe we can get George Soros to fund a 3rd party for us. He'll help us stick it to those damned Republicans. Posted by: principled conservative at August 02, 2009 01:04 PM (8zIIG) 15

What were these more serious issues that the GOP would rather talk about than a fucking birth certificate? Obama is hiding it from Americans who have a right to see it. They're not crazy for pushing the issue, and it's not like these Republican moderates are doing anything to halt the relentless march toward socialism underfoot in this country. The current economic recovery will provide enough increased revenue to balance the budget. Sure. Keep telling yourself that. Spending has gone up at a rate greater than any other time in our nation's history, revenues are still down, and the plan is to raise taxes on the middle class, which will put us further on the backside of the Laffer curve, i.e., further reduce revenues. even tho two posts, neither of you geniuses posted the actual estimate of cost of the "second stimulus" - SEVENTY BILLION
70 billion to extend unemployment benefits - all the axelfraud White House "officials" all agreed we "must" do this. President Barack Obama’s top economic officials said in interviews aired Sunday that the administration may support an extension in unemployment benefits. Some on Capitol Hill view that as a second stimulus package, although it is unlikely to be billed that way, because of rising concern about government spending. and, of course, it will cost 70 billion - but dont worry it will only be a temporary cost. Representative Jim McDermott, Democrat of Washington and chairman of the House Subcommittee on Income Security and Family Support, said he would introduce a bill in September to provide yet another 13 weeks of coverage in states with unemployment rates of 9 percent or higher. “Legislators will line up quickly when they start getting calls from desperate constituents,” he said in a telephone interview. The cost would be $40 billion to $70 billion, but the expense would be temporary, Mr. McDermott said. Some business groups remain skeptical. Douglas Holmes, president of UWC, a group in Washington that represents businesses on unemployment issues, said that there were early glimmers of economic progress and that it was premature to extend benefits again. The money might be better spent, Mr. Holmes said, creating jobs and training people to move into emerging industries. Traditionally, many economists have been leery of prolonged unemployment benefits because they can reduce the incentive to seek work. Where are you getting 79 weeks from? In Michigan you get your initial 26 weeks plus a 13 week extension and then another 13 weeks of a second "your state is over 10% unemployment" extension. (That is 52 weeks) After 1 year you have to re-apply for unemployment because an unemployment year is exactly 1 year from the date you first apply. They are now denying anyone reapplying for unemployment after being on unemployment for a year because you had no "income" in which to base the unemployment claim on. I know this because I was denied. Got layed off from Ford in July 08. Nobody is hiring in the automotive industry right now and if they are they are only hiring with less then 5 years experience because they are cheaper employees. People with experience (I have 16 years as an QE) are not being hired for anything because they know when times get better they will look for a job with more pay and jobs like retail or fast food won't hire you because they know when times get better you will look for a job in your field so they won't waste training someone who is going to leave. And trust me, that $362 dollars a week I was getting on unemployment is not any incentive to stay at home and live off the goberment. And moving out of state for a job is not possible right now for my family. And my story is a common story in Michigan right now. Looks like Obama will have to drag you big-spending Republicans kicking and screaming towards a balanced budget just like Clinton had to. huh? Clinton balanced the budget with Republican congress. I will give clinton credit, he did the right thing working with the republican house to have a balance budget, but don't neglect the fact that most of the prosperity from the 1990s came from the tech bubble in the same was a lot of the prosperity of the 2000s came froma housing bubble. I will agree about the "big spending republicans" jibe. I remember in 2004 being so excited thinking a new wave of small government was coming, little did I know that most of the republicans just wanted to supplant the democrats as wasteful spenders. That is what killed me the most about Bush, were his friggin entitlements and the TARP which paved the way from Obama to get away with Trillions. Bush has a MBA, he should have known better. The only major federal spending I am fine with is military and structural, none of which made it into the Trillions spent by obama this year. Posted by: Ben at August 02, 2009 01:31 PM (f0I0I) 48

No. Narcissists of Obama's stripe find it physically impossible to admit failure. Clinton had a healthy ego, but he was also very pragmatic when it came to retaining his job. Thus far, I see very little of the pragmatic in Obama. Obama will have his own mini Night of the Long Knives blaming/firing minions in droves before he could psychologically adopt a position that had him failing. Really don't think it mattered who lined the route to the town hall, whether it was tea party protesters or A korney suporters of the health care bill, they were all subject to the same treatment, no one was singled out. So makes me really concerned about what the SS is so worried about since he was going to a town hall in the US, not in a foreign country.

Maybe someone can clarify for me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that the unemployment count was based on the number of checks going out. So if people fall into non-employment where they're not taking government money, they don't get counted. It's probably worth it in the short term (until 2010) to keep extending the benefits and force everyone into some semblance of honesty about how bad the economy is.
And on that note, I'd like to tell our troll that he's full of shit. I have a friend who oversees sales of electronics to businesses, so he sees a pretty wide swath of the economy on a day to day basis. No one is planning any hiring in the next year nor programs of any kind that won't result in immediate cuts in spending. He doesn't like to take political positions, but he told me in no uncertain terms that anyone talking about recovery is lying their asses off. And we live in Illinois that got a disproportionately large chunk of the 'stimulus.' Posted by: Methos at August 02, 2009 02:26 PM (XBQ9x) 93
The unemployment insurance here in NY is the only thing keeping me in
my apartment. The extension would be great news since it is impossible
to find work right now in NYC. Also our benefits are taxed and we don't
get that money back, so we do pay income tax on our benefits. If it
were so easy to get a job and get off the dole believe me I would in a
second.
Same here in Boston, only it's worse due to being fined for not having insurance for several months. The state refused to offer it through unemployment due to some clerk repeatedly losing my paperwork and mispelling my name, adress, gender, etc. I'm expected to pay a fine for the period I wasn't covered thanks to their screw-ups, all for semi-useless insurance I'll never use. Even in this economy Massachusetts is doing everything it can to chase businesses and tax payers out of the state, while welcoming illegals with open arms in the name of diversity. Then again, I guess what the state deserves after electing Mini-Obama Deval. Posted by: Blue Falcon in Boston at August 02, 2009 02:27 PM (SMD8k) 94

That's a year and a half of weekly payments while the recipient looks
for work. That's a year and a half plus 13 weeks where the employed,
who pay income taxes, subsidize the unemployed, who do not.
OK first off people collecting unemployment are taxed on that income so lets throw that by the wayside. Second I have been working since I was 13 in 31 years I have never before collected unemployment - considering my employers have paid into the insurance fund for all that time I don't feel real guilty about collecting benefits. Posted by: chad at August 02, 2009 03:05 PM (WNcvq) 113
You also paid into UE insurance fund as an employee. I can't believe it is taxed as payroll when it is already a prorated amount from the former paycheck.
Posted by: kmiller1k at August 02, 2009 03:12 PM (YebhT) 114
Unemployment is no picnic in California. Unless you are a professional hustler and know how to game the system.
The default is now to deny the claim and see if you appeal. Then they see if you can prove a negative. Then only 44% ever win the appeal. And the three-five month backlog on appeals means the incentive is even more on the side of denying the claims. And all this time you sit and watch your bills get later and later. I have been paying into the California system since I was 14, and this fucking Hopenchange bullshit has finally made me go hat in hand to the counter for my own money back. Then if you get unemployment, they take income tax out or you get fucked next year for back taxes. I'm not one of those wise latinas that "borrow" each others' kids to drag down to the EDD office to get extra money. Or somehow manage to stay on the dole for an entire generation. Unemployment insurance is funded by employers, not employees. There is no deduction from your paycheck for UI. And, sifty, there's no adjustment for having kids (that's only the welfare system). Your weekly amount is determined by how long you worked and how much you made.

There is a dependent modifier for unemployment. And I guarantee you that the same hustlers that game the unemployment in California are also going next door to the AFDC office. Most times they are the same building.
from EDD website. Overview - Unemployment Insurance The Unemployment Insurance Program, commonly referred to as UI, provides weekly unemployment insurance payments for workers who lose their job through no fault of their own. To be eligible for benefits, you must be able to work, be seeking work, and be willing to accept a suitable job. The UI program is funded by employers who pay taxes on wages paid to employees. Right. If I hadn't been busting my ass for 23 years, there wouldn't be much to bitch about.I guess I should feel guilty about collecting unemployment. Maybe guilty enough to let my kid go without. Posted by: sifty at August 02, 2009 03:35 PM (2DmCh) 121
"Traditionally, many economists have been leery of prolonged unemployment benefits because they can reduce the incentive to seek work. Posted by: Anti-Harkonnen Freedom Fighter at August 02, 2009 01:14 PM (5r0Tz)" what are they kidding? don't know one single person who has lost their job that isn't absolutely exhausting every avenue trying to get another job, or two part time jobs or anything that pays better than unemployment insurance becasue you can't live on unempoyment insurance. Posted by: muffy at August 02, 2009 03:40 PM (p302b) 122
Hey, I'm not saying that anyone should feel guilty about collecting unemployment. I've been out of work for almost a year and I've been getting UI checks since October. And, of course, employers take the federal and state taxes for this into consideration when they calculate their gross payroll costs. But it's a very small amount . . . FUTA maxes out at $56 per employee per year. That's on top of the state contributions, I'm not sure what they are, but they are not all that high. The rates are adjusted going forward by claims made based on that employer's previous employees who collect, which is one reason a lot of employers will fight the determination of eligibility.

Anyplace in California where you could possibly live on unemployment insurance would be too scary for a law-abiding citizen to live anyway.
Any money you saved would go on treating your gunshot wounds and ambulance bills. The impression of the hippy sitting on his couch watching Flintstones and toking on a bong while decent people work is not always correct. There are enough scumbags to make the impression, which is sad. It galls me to have to look in these unionized cubical-mice's faces and ask for money. It's a new experience. And one that leaves marks inside. Brought to me by Hopenchange! FU52 Posted by: sifty at August 02, 2009 03:46 PM (2DmCh) 125
