Harry Reid: No Health Care Bill In The Senate Before Recess...Tonsils Will Continue To Be Removed For Fun And Profit Unchecked*

Ouch.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said today that the Senate would not attempt to pass sweeping health care reform until after returning from the August recess.

“It’s better to get a product that’s based on quality and thoughtfulness than on trying to just get something through,” Reid told reporters.

Reid said the Senate would try to complete a package in the fall.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin said Wednesday that he expected that a bill would not be passed before the upper chamber breaks for recess on August 7.

“All this is no surprise to anyone,” Reid said.

Except for the President who set the August deadline and is now blowing in the wind all by himself.

Yesterday Nancy "I have the votes" Pelosi said she would wait to see what the Senate was going to do before bringing a plan to the floor (assuming they ever write one). Now she knows, nothing.

This isn't Waterloo yet but every Senator and Congressman is going to get more than an earful on how crappy this idea is for the next month or so and it's going to make it a lot harder when they come back.

Keep the pressure up!

Reid does predict that Senate Finance will have their report done by the recess. I doubt it. First, there's less pressure now to have something. That never moves the process alone.

Second, the Finance report is about paying for this crap. Do you really think those guys want to spend their summer vacation as the only politicians in America on record supporting the necessary tax hikes to make this happen? All while every other vacationing member of Congress spends their time attacking those taxes? I don't think so. That's a thin limb for them to go out on with no backup.

*Thanks to Michael Goldfarb (@thegoldfarb) for the joke inspiration.

Of course I've been guilty of misunderestimating just how dumb people can be, and just how duplicitous our Congresscritters can be. So, there you go.

22 Give your representatives an earful during the recess.  If they hold a town meeting, be sure and show up.  Keep writing, keep calling.  Push the competitive aspects of the Republican plan.  Multi-state options and groups, ala carte plans, expanded MSA's, personal tax credits for insurance, etc.

With any luck, the current plan will fail in toto.  Best case would be for the Democrats in Congress to take the Republican's ideas, implement them, and claim victory for themselves.

I could live with that easily.

23 There are times when I think that the only reason that the Congress passes bills are to justify their existence. Maybe we should just ask ourselves if we need a full time Congress. I would love to see a Congress start sorting through the legislation we have now and start throwing stuff out. Clean house on legislation and then clean house on legislators. Or vice versa.

Obama was supposed to close the deal on health care and instead goes off script about his good friend Harvard Professor of Outrage™ Skip Gates.

So people are not particularly into health care, they are talking about Gates, and basically Obama is worse off than if he didn’t have a press conference.

Or is he? Health care is Obama’s Waterloo, not if it fails but if it passes. When a craptastic system screws up everyone’s insurance and explodes the deficit, the Dems will be driven into the wilderness. Maybe Obama wants to lose at this point.

Aside from the will of the President, the Commissioner’s power would be unchecked. This is extremely troubling given the large scope of responsibility given to the Commissioner. In fact, the Commissioner is so powerful that the title is referenced almost 200 times in H.R. 3200. This government official would have:

• The power to decide which treatments patients could receive and at what cost;
• The power to decide which private plans would be allowed to participate in the Exchange;
• The power to regulate all insurance plans, both in and out of the Exchange;
• The power to determine which employers would be allowed to participate in the Exchange;
• The power to determine how many Americans will be allowed to choose health coverage through the Exchange;
• The power to form and control which physicians and hospitals participate in the government-run plan and in private plan provider networks;
• The power to determine which states are allowed to operate their own Exchange and terminate a previously-approved State Exchange at any time;
• The power to override state laws regarding covered health benefits;
• The power to determine how trillions of taxpayer and employer dollars would be spent within the Exchange;
• The power to determine who qualifies for premium assistance; and
• The power to automatically enroll Americans into the Exchange if they don’t have coverage, including potentially forcing these individuals into the government-run plan.
Also troubling is the fact the Secretary of Health and Human Services would decide which prescription drugs are made available in the government plan. Evidence has shown that government officials in other countries have used this power to deny access to needed treatments on the basis of cost.”

28 idiotic democrats managed to find a way to fuck themselves over, even with a supermajoirty.  unbelievable.

But clearly Democrats are afraid of where the political conversation is going on health care. White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and Obama’s top Hill liaison, Phil Schiliro, ducked into a meeting Thursday afternoon with Blue Dog Democrats who have held up the House version of the bill.

Reid said the Senate would try to complete a package in the fall. And he was merely confirming what Majority Whip Dick Durbin had said Wednesday, when he said a bill would not be passed before the upper chamber breaks for recess on August 7.

Also on Thursday, a group of nine Democratic freshmen senators signed a letter urging Senate Finance Chairman Max Baucus to craft a bill that gets “health care costs under control so we can compete in the global marketplace.”

“In the face of exploding debt and deficits, however, we are concerned that too little focus has been given to the need for cost containment,” the senators wrote. “We believe that any final bill must include innovation, hard decisions, and incentives to bend the cost curve.”

The letter was sent by Democratic Sens. Mark Warner of Virginia, Michael Bennet and Mark Udall of Colorado, Mark Begich of Alaska, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Roland Burris of Illinois, Jeff Merkley of Oregon, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Tom Udall of New Mexico.

Obama still has no idea what is in the health care bill as written and really has no idea what should be in any health care bill.  He's going off talking points and nothing else.

Obama is an empty suit, and nothing more.  He's a Manchurian Candidate: an unwitting (not because he's been brainwashed; because he's dumb) tool to get what the radical wing of the Democratic Party wants: socialism.  They feed him what he should say, gives him his talking points, and watch a slim majority of the electorate fawn over his background story and supposed oratory skills.

He's a product line, not a politician.  The only problem is, people are starting to see that he's all sizzle and no steak.  When he's backed into a corner with no TOTUS or talking points, he hems and haws and looks even more foolish than when he tries to throw a baseball.

He's in this presidency for himself.  He couldn't give two shits about the state of the country or the government or the people.  He wants to rewrite history - not for America, but for him.  That's what he gets out of it.  A big ego boost.

Don't stop pestering your representatives about health care and cap-n-tax.  They are most likely facing reelection before Obama; make sure they know they will pay long before Obama does.

But this tonsil thing by Obama is nuts.  Does he get his health data from watching reruns of the Brady Bunch.  They have stopped removing tonsils on a regular basis for decades.

Why not go with Andrew Sullivan's favorite cause (other than tormenting the Palins and searching for Trig Trutherism) male genital mutilation (aka circumcision)?  I am sure we can save a trillion billion dollars in costs if we stopped that procedure.  We only do it because evil Christianist Jew doctors do not want Andrew Sullivan to have satisfactory orgasms.  Oh wait, Muslims get circumcized too.  Nevermind.

Looks like Obama's pro death policy initiatives are working including his push to pay for abortions through federal funding.

See below.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NY nurse threatened, forced to assist in late-term abortion

ADF attorneys file lawsuit against hospital for violating Christian nurse’s rights of conscience
Wednesday, July 22, 2009

NEW YORK — Alliance Defense Fund attorneys filed a lawsuit Tuesday against Mount Sinai Hospital on behalf of a Catholic nurse who was forced to participate in a late-term abortion under the threat of disciplinary action, including possible termination and loss of her license. The hospital has known of her religious objections to abortion since 2004.

Hospital administrators told the nurse that the scheduled abortion was an “emergency,” though evidence shows otherwise, and insisted moments before the procedure that she assist doctors despite her repeated objections to the procedure, which dismembered a preborn child in the 22nd week of gestation. By federal law, hospitals that receive federal funds cannot force employees to participate in abortion procedures under any circumstances.

“Pro-life nurses shouldn’t be forced to assist in abortions against their beliefs,” said ADF Legal Counsel Matt Bowman. “Requiring a devout, Catholic nurse to participate in a late-term abortion in order to remain employed is illegal, unethical, and violates her rights of conscience. Federal law requires that employers who receive funding from tax dollars must not compel employees to violate their sincerely held religious beliefs, but this nurse’s objections fell on deaf ears.”

“Chasing away workers from the health care field is disastrous health care policy,” said Bowman. “An individual’s conscience is likely what brought them to the health care field. Denying or coercing their conscience will likely drive them right out.”

Administrators at Mount Sinai Hospital threatened senior nurse Cathy Cenzon-DeCarlo with disciplinary measures if she did not honor a last-minute summons to assist in a scheduled late-term abortion. Despite the fact that the patient was not in crisis at the time of the surgery, the hospital insisted on her participation in the procedure on the grounds that it was an “emergency” even though the procedure was not classified as such.

“Category I” is the classification reserved for “patients requiring immediate surgical intervention for life or limb threatening conditions.” The surgery in this case was classified as “Category II,” for operations needing to take place within six hours, indicating that the hospital had no reason to insist upon Cenzon-DeCarlo’s assistance in the abortion in order to protect the patient. Plenty of time existed to find a different nurse to assist, especially since evidence indicates that the patient’s condition did not rise even to a Category II. In fact, Cenzon-DeCarlo observed no indications that the abortion was a medical emergency while in the operating room.

ADF attorneys filed the complaint in Cenzon-DeCarlo v. The Mount Sinai Hospital with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York. They are also requesting a preliminary injunction that would order the hospital to honor Cenzon-DeCarlo’s religious objection against assisting in abortion and refrain from retaliation against her while the case moves forward. New York ADF-allied attorneys Joseph Ruta and Piero Tozzi are serving as local counsel in the case.
