Free the Budget!

Most transparent, administration EVER EVER.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House is being forced to acknowledge the wide gap between its once-upbeat predictions about the economy and today's bleak landscape.

The administration's annual midsummer budget update is sure to show higher deficits and unemployment and slower growth than projected in President Barack Obama's budget in February and update in May, and that could complicate his efforts to get his signature health care and global-warming proposals through Congress.

The release of the update - usually scheduled for mid-July - has been put off until the middle of next month, giving rise to speculation the White House is delaying the bad news at least until Congress leaves town on its August 7 summer recess.

The administration is pressing for votes before then on its $1 trillion health care initiative, which lawmakers are arguing over how to finance.

In other words, 'don't worry about the budget, just pass my craptastic bills.' Normally, such behavior from an administration that promised historic levels of transparency would be something of an outrage, but it's becoming par for the course these days. If the fabled Blue Dog Democrats actually exist, this would be a perfect time for them to start making noise. The White House is hiding information they need to do their jobs in a responsible fashion and they should refuse to vote on any bill that has a significant fiscal impact until the budget update is released.

Still, this does raise an interesting question. If, as Obama claims, the healthcare bill will actually save money, why hide the budget figures until after it's passed instead of presenting the plan as a strategy toward greater solvency?

Update - Moron Chew Toy poon says the fact that President Bush delayed his mid-summer budget update in 2001 makes this post "seem kinda...pointless."
I think the Bush administration, like all, should have worked to get budget information to Congress in a timely fashion. However, poon's frothing Bush-hate leads him to overlook the fact that the Obama administration is trying to push a massive health care bill with significant fiscal impact through the Congress with little regard for how bad the economy is getting. Unless I missed a rather significant development in 2001, President Bush was not.

Their haste to pass a bill before updating the Congress on the budget violates the spirit of the unprecedented transparency we were promised. What's the hurry, other than a cynical attempt to outrun his falling poll numbers? Well that, and pure ego.

So seems I was wrong. They are not "hiding" the information, they're doing something far worse: they're going forward with a budget-busting bill with inadequate information as to the current state of the budget.

Seems they're guilty of incompetence, not malice.

My mistake.

He also answered some very tought questions from Rick and, for the most part, proved rick right. Funny comment though Rick said "can I ask paul ryan a question and the answer was "well you can Rick but you know the producer isn't going to like it". So, that is sort of proof positive that CNBC is censoring.

He must know that some nasty numbers are on the way which is why he's pushing like hell to get this thing through. There is ALWAYS a reason for Obama's urgency and that's gotta be it.

Another thing, does anyone else here find Hillary's return from political Siberia surprising? She was completely off the radar for months and now she is laying out her own agenda publicly? 25 A lot of his voters are starting to get upset. One got up during a TV commercial last night and said "I'm sick of them saying you can't keep your private insurance, of course you can, they are such liars, these republicans." One of our friends calmly turned to this friend and said " the companies are allowed to opt out, they can pay a tax and take away your insurance. And then they can dump you into the private plan, what are you going to do? object? You'll lose your job right? You'll be stuck". The person still wouldn't believe it and others began to urge the person to "read the bill". The person arguing made things worse by saying they already read the bill. We all knew they hadn't read the bill but the talking points watered down version of said bill. What was so frightening was that they were in a room full of people telling them this and they got angry and upset and absolutely refused to believe this was true. They ultimately said "if this is true, if I will lose my private insurance, then I will become a republican and actively fight the democrats". They said this fully believing that we would all be proven wrong.

And the Rs need to be beating the drum that they're hiding the economic numbers-- there's no obvious reason to do so unless it's to hide them until after the HC vote, and that's going to look bad in the eye of even the star-struck voter.

"But quality care shouldn't depend on your financial resources, or the type of job you have, or the medical condition you face. Every American should be able to get the same treatment that U.S. senators are entitled to."
So sayeth Teddy, Lionheart, Kennedy. Let's parce the ridiculousness of this statement.
1. Quality care has to depend on someone's financial resources, doesn't it? I mean, $100k pieces of medical technology don't just evolve from pine needles. No, No, you don't understand, the government will pay for everything, so YOUR financial resources don't matter. Unless, of course, you pay taxes. But hey, look at that unicorn.
2. The "Every American" part is so rich as to just stand on its own. No parcing necessary.

These people have no souls.

The previous invitee was Tim Geithner. He also thought it might not look good to have the Treasury Secretary address the board of a firm that has received over 50 billion in guarantees as they announce a boombastic quarter.

99 Well, Paulson ramrodded massive subsidies to Wall Street. You confuse what was actually done by President Bush with unrealistic plans offered in Congress by a neutered GOP. It is objectively true that the Bush administration acted decisively (and for good reasons, imo) to reinflate credit markets. Keynesian!

And then the next step was effective demand stimulus. That's the Obama side of the story. Of course, the banks have taken the money and run, as the congressional oversight report today shows.

No. It's a mistake to think the Republicans are in any way substantively more than the sum of hapless rhetoric wrt stimulus. They were right in there, writing big checks to Goldsman Sachs and friends.

109 TARP intended to buy toxic (shit) assets in order to "unfreeze" credit markets and keep consumer spending going. Stimulative.
That's how it was promoted, but not how it's worked out. All it did was allow banks to sweep the bad debt under the rug and pretend it wasn't there. That's why you hear about some of these larger banks supposedly making a profit now, even though credit markets aren't close to "unfreezing". That bad debt hasn't actually gone anywhere and it's going to continue to be a drag on the market unless the banks are allowed--or forced--to start clearing it out. Bush signed TARP into law, but Obama's perpetuated the farce. Hardly the actions of a person supposedly committed to "transparency."
It's the same story with the "stimulus"--it was promoted as a vehicle for putting hundreds of billions of dollars immediately in the hands of the private sector to create jobs and stabilize the U3 at 8%. Instead, the money has been used to prop up shortfalls in state budgets and social services, shortfalls that will still be there next year and will likely force further infusions from the stimulus that will mean yet more jobs in the private sector not being created. Obama has been lying about what it's original intention was, and has adopted the primary criticism of the stimulus as something he had planned all along, even though he never made any argument of the sort.
The lesson here is that when the government proposes something costing massive amounts of money, it's best not to take them at their word as to what the effects will be. Karl Popper's law tends to take over in those kind of situations.

Finally dug up some facts? Nice work.

I think the Bush administration, like all, should work to get budget information to Congress in a timely fashion. However, you're ignoring the fact that the Obama administration is trying to ramrod a massive health care bill with significant fiscal impact through the Congress with little regard for how bad the economy is getting. Unless I missed a rather significant development in 2001, President Bush was not.

Their haste to pass a bill before updating the Congress on the budget violates the spirit of the unprecedented transparency we were promised.

So even if they are not "hiding" the information, they're doing something far worse: they're going forward with a budget-busting bill with inadequate information as to the current state of the budget.

Seems they're guilty of gross incompetence, not malice.

My mistake.

Hey moron, not to rain on your idiocy parade, but perhaps you missed this:
http://tinyurl.com/mymsvh
Neil Barofsky, the special inspector general over the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP), will tell lawmakers on Tuesday that taxpayers are being left in the dark about what banks are doing with bailout money, don't know the value of the government's investments and will not know the full extent of how the money is invested.
Barofsky said that while the TARP program that Congress passed amounts to $700 billion, the total federal government support since 2007 for the economy and the financial sector could reach a far higher figure of $23.7 trillion. The government has committed significantly more money through a variety of other federal agencies and programs.
$23.7 trillion, dipwad. And you have the nerve to claim that everything is A-OK?
Where was the "most ethical Congress ever!" when these committments were being made? Where is the "most transparent administration ever!" when the IG for TARP is calling out the government for committing 33 times the amount authorized by Congress?
If you think Obama's "doing well," you're either lying or delusional.

So you're happy to have your comment section edited for wingnut correctness by anonymous goons?

See how I think this phony moral posturing will actually work? After I practically celebrated the imminent torture and death of a U.S. soldier? I'm pretty fucking stupid, it appears.

Posted by: Little poon the loser troll at July 20, 2009 03:34 PM (i31Zq)

142 So you're happy to have your comment section edited for wingnut correctness by anonymous goons?

Actually, the system was put in place to get rid of trolls (one or two in particular) who attempt to get past bans with proxies.

I remember when the Republican's welcomed rational debates.

When you achieve rationality, let us know.

Posted by: Slublog at July 20, 2009 03:37 PM (qjKko)

143 See? I came right back as soon as I thought the coast was clear. I literally have nothing better to do.

144 If you aren't deleting them, who is?

I am. I'm tired of your blather. Get your own blog.

Posted by: uosuɥoɾ sǝlɹɐɥɔ at July 20, 2009 03:44 PM (V+Hje)

145 You changed the subject.

Pot, meet kettle.

You (or as you claim, someone else) deleted all my posts.

Or not, but you're free to believe what you wish. Given the lack of coherence in some of your comments, I have no doubt you're capable of constructing some rich and detailed fantasy worlds.

Posted by: Slublog at July 20, 2009 03:49 PM (qjKko)

146 Look, I'm not sure you guys are really understanding JUST how sorry you should feel for me.

Picture me in a graying pony tail typing frantically like a crack addled monkey if that helps.

Posted by: Little poon the loser troll at July 20, 2009 03:58 PM (i31Zq)

147 If only other posters hadn't quoted my deleted posts this debate about
whose version of reality is more valid might be interesting, eh?

Not really. Although no matter how inane your comments were, I disagree with the decision to alter them.
