NY Senate: GOP Gets Its Ass Kicked

A bit of house keeping. I blogged a few times about NY Republicans in the state Senate wresting control of that house through the defection of two Democrats. One returned the next day leading to a month of chaos while the Senate was deadlocked 31-31.

Late last week the second Democrat re-defected giving the control of the Senate back to the Democrats. Pretty much aside from some new titles for a bunch of folks (and of course, some raises!), everything is back where it started.

That was fun. At least now New York can go back to laughing at California.

2 And the GOP and the Dems are trying to spin this so that the 5 week delay was somehow good for something. GOP is calling it a reform and the two Dem dipshits are claiming that it advances the interests of the hispanic community. Naturally, both sides are pissed that Paterson appointed a Lt. Gov., which may have broken the stalemate, assuming Paterson had the authority to do so. The only winners in this fiasco are the election lawyers.

First, the threat:

And the fact that the reporter changed the nature of her quote:

Moments later, he took aim at Sotomayor's 2001 statement that her standing as a "wise Latina woman" would sometimes allow her to reach a better decision than a white male.

She did not say “sometimes,” which implies on rare occasions or in the minority of cases. She said “more often than not,” which implies states unequivocally that – all else being equal – her ethnicity makes her a better judge.

So, the reporter fundamentally alters the meaning of the quote that prompted Republican opposition – making strong opposition appear to the reader to be unwarranted -- and then passes along the threat that the opposition better not be too strong. Slick.

One day after the coup, Senate Majority Deputy Secretaries Meredith Henderson and Patricia Rubens each received nearly $23,000 in raises. Both staffers received an additional raise on June 23, for a total of nearly $32,000 each, backdated to Jan. 1, 2009. Both staffers are paid $140,382.

Mortimer Lawrence, a top Smith aide and already one of the highest-paid staffers on the Senate payroll, was given a $16,000 raise on June 24 that was backdated to Jan. 2. His annual salary is now $177,231.

On June 26, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Indira Noel received a nearly $11,000 raise that bumped her salary to $118,000. Counsel for Latino and Immigrant Affairs Lourdes Ventura received a nearly $12,000 raise, increasing her annual pay to $131,000. And Curtis Taylor, who holds the title of special adviser to the majority leader, received a $13,500, taking his annual salary to $135,000.

New York is worse than California. At least California has recall. We were stuck with Client 9 until he cut his deal with the Feds.

California is going for high speed rail between Los Angeles and San Francisco. New York is talking about high speed rail between New York and Buffalo. I like Buffalo, but if you don't have family around there, there isn't much reason to go there. Borrowed Billions for Rail to Buffalo. Not a winning campaign slogan, in my opinion anyway.

The big lesson from this whole fiasco is that Albany did nothing for a month, and nobody cared. I think it's time to limit their sessions to 6 weeks per year. Budget, pass any required legislation, and go home.
