Eric Holder: Hey, Let's Jail the People Who've Kept Us Safe for Eight Years

Considering prosecuting the "torturers."

Attorney General Eric Holder is considering whether to appoint a criminal prosecutor to investigate the Bush administration's interrogation practices, a controversial move that would run counter to President Obama's wishes to leave the issue in the past.

Holder plans to make a final decision within the next few weeks, a Justice Department official told The Associated Press on Saturday night. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on a pending matter.

Justice Department spokesman Matt Miller said Holder planned to "follow the facts and the law."

"We have made no decisions on investigations or prosecutions, including whether to appoint a prosecutor to conduct further inquiry," he said. "As the attorney general has made clear, it would be unfair to prosecute any official who acted in good faith based on legal guidance from the Justice Department."

BTW: Remember, it was Eric Holder who decided to void the conviction of the armed, uniformed Black Panthers who stood outside a polling place and intimidated voters. Even the ACLU was upset at the Obama administration's decision to allow a little voter intimidation, just as long as it was coming from the "right people."

So apparently the rule of law applies vindictively against those who seek to secure our right to life itself, but not so much to those who seek to take away our right to vote.

Some constitutional guarantees are more important than others, and some victims more worthy of vindicating. Swarthy third-worlders who wish to murder us > white suburban voters just trying to cast a vote.

Distraction: Ah, distraction. Obama's favorite meme. As a commenter points out, maybe he's doing this to distract us from the fact he can't fix the economy and in fact seems to be hurting it.

There is a long-storied presidential tradition of turning to foreign policy and emphasizing foreign policy initiatives and successes when the economy goes sour. Jimmy Carter and George Bush the Elder used this tactic a lot, preferring to meet with the press only in the Rose Garden when flanked by foreign leaders, strongly hinting that foreign policy was the important thing to ask about.

Obama can't do this as he seeks no foreign policy victories. His plan is simply US capitulation in almost all foreign disputes.

So what does he turn to? "Defending the constitution" by prosecuting CIA officers. That's sort of foreign policy, kinda. And the only "foreign policy dispute" he can win, as it doesn't involve an actual outside foreign power.

6 this actually may turn out to be a secret in disguise.

The moment Holder announces an investigation, it will shut down everything.

Pubbies will fight back hard because its either that or everyone, metaphorically, hangs.

Imagine Obama trying to get health care or climate change through once the entire Democratic leadership of the House and Senate is forced to testify in court and confess that they knew about and endorsed everything.

Imagine what happens when the civil servants in the CIA, NSA, DIA etc start the nonstop leaks to the press.

When the American people understand that Obama is throwing national security personnel and potentially formerly elected leaders in jail because they were being mean to a guy who helped kill thousands of Americans, there will be a backlash.

10 Eric Holder is a hero. Willing to plunge into the depths of Chimpy/Darth Cheney villiany to expose the truth. Willing to defy the will of his master Barry Acorn. With a sense of social justice and smug righteousness as his only weapons, Eric Holder heroically embarks on a quest to save the world from cosmic treachery. In a world riven by darkness, only one man can bring back the light. Behold, Eric Holder!

22 "a controversial move that would run counter to President Obama's wishes to leave the issue in the past."

Apparently Holder has gone rogue. Obama can't control him! He's a loose cannon!

Obama just wants to move forward, but that Holder, man he is a stickler for the law. In fact when Obama interviewed him for AG he asked him, "What's a weakness of yours?"

Holder answered, "Well, first, I think I work too hard sometimes. I put too many hours in. Second, I think I might have TOO MUCH respect for the law. I'm kind of a stickler that way and not everyone likes that."

Oh, and last time I checked we were the ones missing two large buildings in NYC and 3000 US Citizens –just saying.

I hope there are enough people in CIA that actually care about protecting this country and will start leaking some things detrimental to the idiots starting this new smear campaign.

It's getting really hard to read and watch the news lately because everything coming out has the usual spin on it and is designed to make people forget about the real problems we have.

And Michael Jackson is still dead. And AIG is still going to get their new bonuses. And my GM stock is still worthless. And the Dems are still going around the constitution in more ways than the Repubs ever dreamed of.

This is not a good sign. The economy must be tanking.

I believe that the June unemployment numbers were massaged.  We lost a lot more jobs than would be normally indicated by a 0.1% increase.  Somehow this got put into the "not looking" category.

The minimum wage is shooting up in July.  That means job losses in states with a low cost of living and an increase in the costs associated with union contracts.

I'm sure some of this has already been planned for, but it has to have an effect on July and/or August numbers.

37 But Holder is such a 'deep' person:

It's the morning after Independence Day, and Eric Holder Jr. is feeling the weight of history. The night before, he'd stood on the roof of the White House alongside the president of the United States, leaning over a railing to watch fireworks burst over the Mall, the monuments to Lincoln and Washington aglow at either end. "I was so struck by the fact that for the first time in history an African-American was presiding over this celebration of what our nation is all about," he says....He doesn't dwell on the fact that he's the country's first black attorney general

40 Let's face it, we all know where this is going. The left is desperately trying to criminalize any political belief or policy that doesn't march lock-step with their radical agenda. That will result in retribution from the right the next time Republicans control congress and the White House (criminal charges for economic crimes committed by those in office now). The lefties always argue that Republicans are "divisive", but the truth is they usually start the volley of investigations and then complain when it is returned against them.

poon's remarks here are a good indication of the general mood of the Left.

They're scared. The big move to socialism has stalled and even some Democrats are killing Obama Care and Cap & Trade. It's very telling when they have to use Ronald Reagan as a defense for Obama's failures.

The Michael Jackson funeral is over. Sanford and Ensign are old news and no one cares, anymore. Without distractions, the Democrats are now center stage and will have to answer for their failed and reckless policies.

74 "Exactly. Whatever complaint there was about Bush (left, right or center), Obama is leagues worse."

Posted by: AmishDude at July 12, 2009 03:08 PM

The problem is that some of the over-the-top bitching about Dubya's policies -- left, right and center -- led us to Obama. The Left painted Bush and his foreign policies as the worst since Hitler and his economic policies as the worst since the Great Depression. While the Right defended most of Bush's foreign policy, they joined in the chorus about how horrible were Bush's economic policies. Even though, much of the problems were caused by Democrats.

But, that never got out to the general public. All the general public heard was the Left's cries of Hitler and the Great Depression and the Right bitching up a storm over the spending and deficits (even though it was in line with spending by Clinton) and then the mushy middle listened to all this and came to the conclusion that Bush was probably somewhere between Hitler/Great Depression and bad. Conventional wisdom then became that "we cannot continue the FAILED policies of the last eight years!!!".

Enter Obama, repeating all these false memes ad naseum and bingo, easy win.

Had the Right not gone over the top in their bitching about Dubya's domestic policies the last eight years and put things in proper perspective, while still being critical, we may not be in this mess.

Am I blaming the Right for giving us Obama? No, but we sure didn't help matters, by aiding the Left in their meme of "the failed policies of the past 8 years".

It's easy for everyone now to have perspective when compared to Obama, but where was this perspective in real time, compared to say, the Clinton years, as the American Thinker article above does? Where was this perspective during the Bush years, trying to prevent the meme of "the failed policies of Bush = Great Depression, etc" from becoming conventional wisdom?

When in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.
He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders.  The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.'
You could have heard a pin drop.
There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American.  During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done?   He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims.  What does he intended to do, bomb them?'
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear powered and can supply emergency  electrical power to shore facilities; they have three  cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck.  We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?'
You could have heard a pin drop.
A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'  Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, 'Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.'
You could have heard a pin drop.
Robert Whiting, an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on. "You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked  sarcastically.  Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !"
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard  look.  Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to."
You could have heard a pin drop.
Remember, The Left worships at the alter of the little "G" (government).   I prefer to worship the Big "G"  (God) .   I am proud to be of this land, AMERICA.  We must Never forget Sept. 11.  Our hearts are broken, but our spirit is not.  God is with us, even now.

I wouldn't be so cynical, katya. The Democrats have certainly won the propaganda war since 2004, but don't forget that 92% approved of Bush's response in the weeks following 9/11. They witnessed the horrors of Islamic terrorism firsthand and they were okay with wiping out ALL those muslim terrorists.

My point: People have short memories and they're like sheep who jump on the bandwagon, but when the Democrats are seriously defending the rights of muslim terrorists, there will be a backlash.

Posted by: katya at July 12, 2009 03:57 PM (9tW8u)

105 There was one man in a better position than anybody in the Republican Party to defend George Bush's policies and record and that was George Bush.

Especially during his last term, he fell off the map and left it to others to defend his policies while he did little (politically or in the media) to defend us or himself.  I don't blame him for failing in this endeavor.  I do blame him for not even attempting it.  When he was straying from conservative fiscal policies, we got the blame for that.  In doing so, in not vetoing more bills, and not emphasizing what Democrats were foisting upon him, we wound up in the position where we both: 1.) would have had to defend policies that are anathema to us; and 2.) bore the blame as Republicans in no longer being trusted on fiscal matters.  The Democrats realized they could toss anything at him and he wouldn't fight back--the politician who doesn't fight back always appears from the get-go to be guilty.

He made a conclusion that he was not going to bother with defending what he did and would look to Harry Truman as a model (Truman had low approval numbers upon leaving office, but, of course, is now widely considered to be a good President).  In doing so, he may look good in a history book 60 years from now, but he weakened the position of his own side and weakened the support for every policy he believes in.

I thank him for his foreign policy and still believe he acted better than Kerry or Gore, but he bears more blame for Obama than any Republican except for John McCain, Steve Schmidt, and Nicole Wallace.

They're deathly afraid of Sarah Palin.

I'm not just saying that because I want to believe it; it's true. How do I know? Well, if Palin is such a non-threat and really bad for the GOP, why do they spend so much money, time, and energy trying to destroy her in the eyes of the American people?

Take, for example, Dennis Kucinich. He's a very popular figure on the left; Kucinich has a loyal following among the Democrat base. Kucinich is also a buffoon and a clown and has absolutely no hope of ever becoming president, or even senator in Ohio.

We would love to have the kooky Dennis Kucinich as the face of the Democrat party and the Democrat nominee of any presidential election. But we don't waste time destroying Kucinich or even talking about him because to us he's not a threat.

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, is a threat. By the Democrats own actions, they're admitting she's an influential figure in American politics who can do a lot of damage to the Democrats.

Can you imagine a bunch of conservatives trolling the internet in a massive anti-Kucinich operation, or the right-leaning media attacking Kucinich day after day because he's such a doofus? Of course not. Q.E.D.

If they go after too many, or Cheney or Bush, the republic is over. They can never afford to give up power after that.

The govt. has acted with a sort of gentlemen's agreement that the administration leaving power peacefully would not be prosecuted for anything. If that ends, it will be the surest sign they do not intend to leave office, ever. Turnabout would come into play and liberals make too many alliances with pure thieves. We will become a banana republic or an empire, but our republic will end. The current administration doing that, or allowing the idiots in congress to do that, will be all the sign you need.

Agree with pretty much everything you had to say here. My biggest beef with Dubya (other than on policy issues such as Amnesty) was his refusal to defend himself against the mass media, against the Democrats and against the Left. I would defend his policies against smears and lies and false information only to have the tools with which I was debating say "well, if that's true, then why doesn't he just say that". All I could do was shrug my shoulders and say "fuck if I know..."

But, while I sympathize that conservatives were seemingly stuck either defending spending and deficits with which we did not agree or joining in the attacks on such policies, I still say there is no excuse for the lies and smears and attacks on his policies as the worst in the history of the galaxy to become the conventional wisdom. We didn't need President Bush out there saying 2+2 != 5 when the Left, Democrats and mass media were pushing that fallacy for political gain. That is what they do. It's their SOP and they are not going to stop. It is our job to continue the good fight, no matter whether or not our representation in government leads the way. A fact is no less a fact if it is not stated by our government representatives.

All that said, I share your opinion that Dubya shares some of the blame. I would just add, in the same sense, Conservatives do as well. Because the mushy middle never bothers to stop and check what the complaints are, they only hear that 'both sides' are unhappy. When they hear that, they think 'damn, if both sides are unhappy, then he must REALLY be bad!' And that as not the case in the least.

It's like those stupid polls on the war, where Bush would get a bad result, where people would say they were not happy with the war effort. Only, half the 'unhappiness' was due to some wanting the effort to be more aggressive while others wanted us to cut-and-run. But the question was deliberately vague so as to give a general negative result.

245 I keep reminding everyone.  OBAMA DOESN'T GIVE A RAT'S ASS ABOUT THE ECONOMY.  Barry is all about the REDISTRIBUTION of wealth in this country.  Every one of "his' programs is aimed in this direction.  All else is smoke and mirrors in order to accomplish his goal.

He's taking hits because the economy isn't getting better via Obamanomics.  Time for a little "distraction" for the common folks.  Whip 'em up into another frenzy to keep 'em occupied.  When that wears thin, I'm sure he'll trot out those ol' evil greedy CEO's for another round of whipping.  In the meantime, he'll be cavorting with Pelosi and Reid to ram thru Crap & Tax and ObamaCare.

Well, except one time when my friend Dylan said the coke we bought off him wasn't a whole ounce and he waved a gun in our face. Dylan slammed the car into reverse and hit a parked car. Luckily they weren't good shots and we got away. When Dylan's dad asked him what happened to the car he bought him since he's paying for the insurance, Dylan and Justin told him some Mexicans rear ended us and ran off. I had to ask mom for an advance on my allowance to buy a new backpack though, got powder all over the inside and had to throw it away. I told mom some black kid stole it.

Lets be clear here you disingenuous asshole. There is not one fucking difference between a Black Panther and a Nazi skinhead. Those were not just black men standing around minding their own business. That particular polling station was heavily used by old retired white women who would probably be quite scared and intimidated into not voting by two racist thugs carrying weapons. They knew exactly what they were doing.

In fact the polling station itself was in the lobby of an apartment building who's tenants were primarily old, white and retired.

They were shouting racially charged insults and epitaphs and were overheard shouting over and over: "No One Is Going To Stop A Black Man From Being President !!

Now if these would have been White Supremacists instead of Black Panthers and old retired black women instead of old retired white women, the MSM and the left would have had a meltdown and demanded those guys be frogmarched into prison.

You are an intentionally obtuse and hypocritical shit stain on humanity.

Dude, you let out an honest opinion. That's why the Dem machine were so delighted to get a light skinned non-scary "black" candidate for 2008. That guy in the picture is just way too dark for the Libs to even let in the servant's entrance up in the Hamptons. Eh?

331 In the interest of fairness, since Obama says he's all for fairness, if his administration prosecutes and jails the CIA who waterboarded those terrorists then they should also prosecute and jail Jamie Gorelick, Robert Torricelli and the other guys who dumbed down our intelligence during the Clinton years and built the wall that cost us two large buildings and the lives of 3000 people.  Not to mention everyone including Clinton himself who failed  to accept Bin Laden when he was offered to them on a  silver platter several times.  And even Jimmy Carter for allowing our embassy and the diplomats to be captured by the Iranians with no backlash to the Iranians.  Also for not backing up the Shah and allowing the militants to gain power in Iran...the author of all our troubles with Iran today.

When a love interest tells you "I like you as a friend", she's dumping you

When he/she/it tells you "it's not you, it's me", it's you.

Moving the goalposts is when a known racist militant organization with weaponry stands in the way of little old white ladies snarling "nobody going to stop a black man from being president, cracker bitch" becomes just a couple nice black fellas standing around beaming "good morning ma'am, ain't it a nice day"

347 Unconstitutional - the accused have a right to a quick and speedy trial; Holder has dragged his feet for 6 months (more if you count the briefings received after the November election, and especially more if you count the briefings senator Obama got).  They aren't allowed to masturbate until the 2010 elections, and then want to pretend their hands aren't sticky as they start show trials.  If Obama and Holder were actual lawyers, instead of Ivy League quota recipients, they would understand constitutional law and basic criminal law.

350 The "serious" right-wing blogs (Hot Air, Patterico, LGF, etc.) all have a policy of correcting errors when they are pointed out.

I gathered from some of Ace's recent posts that he wanted this blog to start being taken seriously...correcting errors is the first step towards that goal.

Posted by: Queen Sarah the Quitter at July 12, 2009 08:01 PM (i31Zq)

355 A lot of the craziness we are seeing coming out of this administration can simply be attributed to the fact that Obama is a statist and a neo-Marxist. What's equally disturbing is that it seems more and more apparent just how deeply indebted he is th the radical fringe leftists in this country. Their ultimate wet dream has always been Bush's head on a platter, and this Holder-by-proxy shit is a good indication that he (Obama) is willing to deliver.

Posted by: Soap MacTavish at July 12, 2009 08:33 PM (/2hGD)

356 I knew Bush should have issued a blanket pardon to his entire administration... but on the other hand, let's look forward to all the criminal persecution of punks like Barry and Eric and Leon this sets the precedent for.

For starters, I want to see people go to jail for releasing details of America's interrogation program. And, for nominating an outspoken, unrepentant sexist racist to the Supreme Court. Not to mention bankrupting, quite deliberately, the nation.

Actually, the Black Panthers were not facing convictions, as the case was a civil matter, seeking an injuction and fines.  If the case were criminal in nature, the defendants, upon failing to appear in court or failing to file any written  response to the DOJ lawsuit, would have faced arrest warrants issued by the presiding judge.

The dismissal by DOJ was filed for record out of court, so DOJ averted making statements of explanation to the judge, although the judge would not have had an option to require such statement from DOJ.
