Hey, Who Is Up For Some More Sarah Palin Talk? MORE: Some Sort Of Announcement Today. UPDATE 2- CNN Reporting She Won't Run For Reelection

Quick above the post note...various commenters have tipped that she has scheduled some sort of announcement for 3pm eastern.

Not running for another term as Governor?

Strange day for it but stay tuned.

Cockholster Rick Sanchez on CNN (you know the guy who killed a man in a DUI incident) says she isn't running for reelection. Of course they are spinning it as she's too afraid to run again. More likely, it's a way to set up a run in '12 like Mitt. She can't travel as much and get the coverage out there in the middle of nowhere. Plus, her term runs through December 2010, so it's not like she's out of there tomorrow (in fairness Candy Crowley just made these points to Dirty Sanchez).

Original post:

Slow holidayish day but thankfully Jonah Goldberg fills the void by becoming the latest pundit to play a round of "I really like you Sarah but..."

You’re blowing it.

We haven’t met, but you might remember I was one of the first columnists to tout you for John McCain’s running mate. I cheered you mightily when Senator McCain selected you, and I still believe that you were the smartest choice he could have made given the obstacles before him. I’m also assuming you want to run for president some day.

...For starters, every time I see you on TV, you’re whining about unfair press coverage. Don’t get me wrong: Much of it is unfair, and some of it deserves a response. But it’s not presidential. It’s not even gubernatorial. You are constantly taking the bait, taking up the fights your biggest fans want you to take up.

But here’s the thing: Don’t listen to your biggest fans. Don’t alienate them either, but don’t think that because the Palin4Pres crowd cheers, you’re making progress. Politics is ultimately about persuasion, and you seem entirely uninterested in that, preferring instead to play the victim. Well, victims don’t get elected president. Ronald Reagan was a laughingstock for liberals and despised by the press. But he didn’t whine or take the bait.

Second, peddling a few platitudes and truisms about free markets and limited government is no substitute for really knowing what you’re talking about. Yes, you can talk well about the stuff you know — oil drilling, energy, etc. — but beyond your comfort zone, you fall back on bumper-sticker language that sounds fine to the people who already agree with you but is useless in winning over skeptics.

There's obviously more and Goldberg does take on the idiocy of the McCain people, the press and goes into detail about her abundant strengths. If you are going to beat him up for this column (and I have a feeling more than a few will) do him and yourself the courtesy of reading the whole thing.

I agree with Goldberg and Krauthammer before him (how brave of me, I know).

Palin is a tremendous political talent with skills that can't be taught and seems to have all the right conservative policy instincts. As Goldberg notes, she's great on issues she's comfortable with (energy, oil, values) but not so great in expressing herself in depth on a host of other issues a viable presidential candidate has to deal with.

I want to see her be able to talk more in depth about foreign affairs, immigration and economics. As I've said, it seems she has the right instincts but that's not enough.

Bush did to on some issues (taxes come to mind) but he could never quite explain them. I want Palin (or any GOP nominee) to be able to really explain to people why conservative policies are the right way to go.

Of course, as you all know, I also want to meet Judy Greer. Given the recent history of the GOP, I'm not sure which is more likely.

The simple fact is based on the candidate we saw last fall she's not electable as President. As everyone keeps saying, the good news is that's not an issue for another 3+ years. There's plenty of time for her to improve as a candidate so she capitalize on what she already has going for her. I don't know why pointing that out in a constructive way is tantamount to treason, yet for some it is.

(FTR-It's impossible to rewrite everything in every post, here are some more thoughts I had on her earlier this week.)

1 She's making some kind of big announcement, about her future, from Wasilla at 3:00 Alaska time today.

2 All I have to say about Sarah Palin is; I voted for her last time, and if I can, I'll vote for her next time.

3 Yeah just seen on Fox News she's talking about her future plans? Hmmm, maybe she reads AoSHQ.

Posted by: ProudinNC at July 03, 2009 01:38 PM (Edv29)

4 Drew pretty much summed up my opinion of her. She (or whomever is the GOP rep) will also have to be able to correct the media repeatedly during every interview, without sounding too confrontational.

Posted by: SDH at July 03, 2009 01:42 PM (QEwb6)

5 I have seen videos  of President Bush when he was Governor of Texas, he was quite articulate and agressive, I liked what I saw and heard.  Watching him attempt to get something done on social security, and watching our "free" press silence him, I have my doubts about Governor Palin.   I, too, voted for her, sent money to McCain based on her, but if our press/media silences her, it does not matter what she has to say, we will not hear it.

Posted by: J at July 03, 2009 01:42 PM (Ty7DK)

6 Ok. So I think she is kind of hot and you got to like conservative babes. But I do get tired of her quips. Mostly I like her because she pisses of the left so much. They become they're unvarnished unhinged selves when ever she speaks. I really would like an option other than Sarah.

Posted by: Locus at July 03, 2009 01:45 PM (hdEJE)

7 Pretty much spot-on. Great person, but not ready for the Presidency.

Posted by: Evil Red Scandi at July 03, 2009 01:45 PM (erlfI)

8 Yeah, I've been participating in this discussion at Hot Air and the majority view appears to be that because Jonah is already in the tank for Romney, that this is a stealth hit job against Sarah.  I don't know how in the tank Jonah is for anyone, but at face value his words do seem to make sense to me.  She can't play the role of pure populist and expect to win.  She's got to project the image of a far more serious candidate.

Actually this whole thing reminds me of the discussion they had at Redstate last year before the VP pick.  Several people were suggesting that McCain should pick an up-and-coming star in the GOP (they suggested Jindal) because even if his campaign isn't successful, it will give the VP nominee experience and exposure for his own run 4 years later.  But others were quick to point out that a failed VP candidate from either party has never gone on to win the Presidency in the next election.  Ever ever ever.  So here we are, McCain picked a rising star in the GOP, one that gets lots of people excited, and she has an incredible mountain to climb if she's going to be successful in 2012.

yea  and Ronald Reagan is only an actor who can possibly befieve that he can be president.

me thinks some of the objections to Palin on the conservative side is the belief that she has been too damaged by the Dems to succeed in 2012.  such beliefs are never acknowledged out front but rather it is usually couched in logical arguments such as those forwarded by Goldberg.

Posted by: canuk at July 03, 2009 01:47 PM (flu/p)

10 I'm thinking she's going to announce she's not running for president.  She doesn't seem the type to really want it, nor does she seem the type willing to put her family through more of the hellish muckraking her detractors seem to delight in.

Posted by: Salty Alaskan at July 03, 2009 01:48 PM (QohqE)

11 Sorry for the erroneous information up there, her announcement will be 3 pm ET.  So, fifteen minutes from now.

Anyone else hoping for a first secession to get the ball rolling?  Maybe get Perry out there next?

Posted by: CB at July 03, 2009 01:48 PM (9Wv2j)

12 Jonah should not have said a "laughingstock fairly or not..." That concedes too much but may have been unthinking.
He sometimes sounds like he got his impression of her from mangled MSM interviews with her, not her uncut, unedited interviews and speeches. I don't consider her a whiner either.
OTOH she does need to gain wider knowledge of some subjects but there is plenty of time for that. The question is whether she will be able to overcome the continuing MSM and Democrat demonization campaign.

13 Bumper Sticker platitudes don't work? Did you not witness the same election I did last year?

14 Maybe she's declaring Alaskan Independence!

Posted by: JohnJ at July 03, 2009 01:50 PM (giXIt)

15 I'm really getting tired of the endless "advice" from pundits.  First they say she has to spend more time in the lower 48 and travelling abroad, and then when she does, they say she needs to focus on governing Alaska.  Enough already.  Romney and Huckabee don't have real jobs.  They can spend all their time on self-promotion, fundraising, hobnobbing, interviews, etc.  She doesn't have that luxury.  She has a legislature full of corrupt idiots to herd, as well as a corrupt state Republican party apparatus that hates her guts and would love to destroy her.  Add into the mix the fat, ugly, unemployed libtard losers in Juneau who file ethics complaints against her for wearing an ArcticCat jacket, and several natural disasters such as massive flooding and Mt. Redoubt to contend with.  She doesn't have time to play their stupid games.

Posted by: ol_dirty_/b/tard at July 03, 2009 01:51 PM (dYG7I)

16 She was constrained by McCain's policy positions.

Posted by: Lipstick at July 03, 2009 01:52 PM (b+nOT)

17 Jonah missed his own point. Palin does need to improve her knowledge, but she does not need to showcase that she is doing so.

In fact, to reveal in any way that she is "boning up" (that ought to wake morons up) will drop the 16-ton weight on her campaign.

Let Reagan be Reagan and now let Palin be Palin.

18
I realized the other day why the Democrats are continuing their attacks on Gov Palin.

The Left isn't worried about Sarah Palin running against Obama in 2012; they're trying to torpedo her reelection campaign in Alaska. If she's decides not to run for another term I'm sure it has something to do with the bullshit her and her family are being put through by the Left.

Either way, the attacks on Palin are about the governorship in Alaska, not the 2012 presidential campaign.

O.K., one can dream.

Posted by: Blazer at July 03, 2009 01:53 PM (AoS9J)

20 it is the height of idiocy to provide public rebukes from conservative "intellectuals" to possible 2012 nominees - the left simply reroutes those immediately, and will continue to do so thru 2012, as "Even Conservatives say Palin is a fucking idiot"

Im very disappointed in jonah, krautie and now this blog.

if conservatives don't at least review why the left is ascendant now, the no holds barred verbal warfare with no friendly fire (i.e. what the left has done since nov 2000), and learn from it, no way we can get back on top in this modern media and political world.

that starts with our "leaders" in the media not putting knives in our political leader's backs.

Oh boy, if Sarah drops out we'll get a nice wonkish dishwater Republican with zero charisma, but he's respected by the insiders.

Time for a third party.

Please give us a conservative who will fight, with imagination, who will take the brickbats of the elitists who are driving this once great country into the ground for their own aggrandisement

24 .For starters, every time I see you on TV, you’re whining about unfair press coverage.

I'd like an example of this, because I haven't seen it.

Responding to a bunch of sleazy smear merchants is whining? Really? She should say nothing while people attack her kids?

Hey, you know what would be awesome. If all these dickbag "conservatives" who criticize Palin for talking about unfair press coverage would step up and take it on for her so she doesn't have to.

That's sorta their job, you know? Take a hatchet to the other side so the faces of the party can rise above it all.

But I guess that's asking too much, huh? Easier to stay on the sidelines and sneer at her like the rest of your cocktail party butt-buddies, isn't it?

With friends like this, who needs enemies?

You guys talk about how “bad” her interviews were and how she can do a good speech.  Doesn’t that tell you something?  Do you need to be hit with a clue bat?

How in the hell do you explain how she did so well in the LIVE debate with Plugs and then did so bad on the interviews by the MSM propaganda vendors News?

You all gripe about MSM bias and then turn around and take their interviews as gospel.

What Palin needs to do is get a campaign staff that isn’t out to “get” her and one that knows how to outwit the media. You know, someone who will tell them no editing or all interviews must be live.

What conservatives need to do is support her and quit sounding like damn “concern trolls”.

What liberal squishy R’s need to do is change the R after their name to D and STFU.

34 What 15 said.  Sarah Palin has the ability no other Republican has, and that is to generate buzz.  Talk of her lack of seasoning is laughable - check out the current occupant of the White House, the empty suit who beat a veteran Senator and bonafide war hero!  She has a lot more to teach the "insiders" in the Republican party than they have to teach her: how'd that RINO strategy work out for you, McCain?  Worked pretty shitty for America, doofus.

I don't think Palin supporters think it is. I do think they get annoyed at cocks like AllahPundit who plays up every single nasty comment or criticism of Palin and rarely mentions the substantive, policy-oriented things that she's involved with. I think they get annoyed by people who seem completely ignorant of the times that Palin does talk policy and only pay attention when the MSM freak show mugs her in broad daylight.

Thats because she can do more damage in The Senate. Being relatively young she can build and solidifly her conservative credentials even more and gain even more respect there for several years before concentrating on national office. I just don't think 2012 is her year. 2016 maybe.

Would she be better for the country than the Young Pioneers we've got now? Are you kidding me, a carrot would better than what we've got!

She truly is the girl next door, not some sort of larger-than-life leader. But since We The People, the people next door, people out here in the real world, have no representatives in Washington these days, she gets my vote.

66  Goldberg writes:

President Bush had the same problem you do, which is why there’s a hunger for Republicans who can effectively articulate and sell our policies and philosophy. That’s why the wonks have the upper hand. Mitt Romney, Indiana governor Mitch Daniels, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, and other hands-on types are what the party wants and, frankly, needs.

Let's see, Romney, he of the Massachusetts Health Card bill, very conservative.  MItch Daniels quote:
"A consumption tax on a product you'd just as soon have less of doesn't violate the rules I learned under Ronald Reagan."  Plus the 1% tax increase on people of Inidiana making above $100K a year, yes, yes very conservative, invoke Reagan and everyone gives you a pass I guess.  And the last I saw Jindal, he was being excoriated by the press for giving some geek response to Obama's State of the Union.   Sounds exactly like what the Republican party needs.  From the above and Goldberg getting in touch with his inner Katie Couric (who gave almost the exact same advise to Palin) I'd say that he was about to jump into the talk shows and needed this as the price he has to pay.

Me personally, I'm agnostic on Palin, like her personally, but don't know if she would make a good president, but if the likes of Romney is what is good for the republican party (I'm not a member) then it really does need to fade away.  It's just more of the same Dem lite as far as I can see.

69 I think people want reassurance that she's not just a pretty face. She doesn't have to telegraph anything. I'd love to see her give Reaganesque speeches about first principles. My biggest complaint is she hasn't seemed smooth.

I think she could give Romney good credibility with soc-cons. He'd be the front runner if the economy is still in the toilet. I don't know if Romney would want someone with an independent base on his team though. It'd be his loss.

I have seen videos  of President Bush when he was Governor of Texas, he was quite articulate and agressive, I liked what I saw and heard.  Watching him attempt to get something done on social security, and watching our "free" press silence him, I have my doubts about Governor Palin.   I, too, voted for her, sent money to McCain based on her, but if our press/media silences her, it does not matter what she has to say, we will not hear it.

Did they silence Reagan? No, and we had only a handful of media outlets.

I agree with Drew. I want someone who can articulate the conservative position clearly and consistently. Bush wasn't it. McCain sure wasn't. Palin can be, but needs to work on it.

Sure let's put up Bobby Jindel instead so that the media can spend the entire campaign season crucifying him for being a 'creationist who performs exorcisms"

Or Mitt Romney so the media can crucify him for imposing health care mandates which bankrupted the state of Massachusetts.

And mostly certainly do a Newt Gingrich, make sure that whoever is the next Reagan, insist that they raise their hands to Al Gore Global Warming hysteria.

Bumper Sticker platitudes don't work? Did you not witness the same election I did last year?

But it’s easier for voters to ‘get’ the liberal position on any topic (poverty? Give them money! Homelessness? Give them homes! War? Be nice! Health Care costs? Make the government pay!)

The conservative positions are less childish. It takes consistent promotion and explanation, and  it’s made all the more difficult with a media establishment rooting for the other side.

Reagan was explaining conservative ideas for 25 years prior to being elected president.

104 @93 CJ- The conservative positions are less childish. It takes consistent promotion and explanation, and  it’s made all the more difficult with a media establishment rooting for the other side.

Partly correct. Conservative positions are indeed less childish, as the vast majority of liberal positions could have been written by Peter Pan.

Additionally, consistent promotion and explanation of conservative positions IS needed ,  because the MSM is chock full of whining brats who are emotionally invested in their own rampant peter pan-ism. As such, they will continually misrepresent, alter, or outright lie about our positions as you stated.

However, liberal positions aren't easier to "get" than conservative positions intrinsically- I don't think Reagan's messages were all that complex- Daylight in America, Are you better or worse off than four years ago? America is an exceptional place, etc. are not all that complex.

The irony of Jonah Goldberg questioning Sarah's qualifications is that his only qualification when he burst upon the scene was that he was Luciane Goldberg's son.

You're right. There is a great deal of irony going on around here. Now we have, I assume, a conservative using left-wing talking points to criticize another conservative for apparently adopting the left-wing view of Sarah Palin and using that to criticize her. Interesting.

And, what is Lucciane Goldberg famous for, exactly? I had never heard of her until years after I knew who Jonah was. And, isn't kind of ridiculous that someone who has a (supposedly) famous parent cannot make a name for himself without being criticized? What the hell can he do about it?

I don't agree with everything in his article, but he's right in that Palin is going to have to make quite an effort to change the public's opinion of her if she wants to ever be President. Sure, the public's opinion was formed based on vicious and unfair portrayals by Democrats and their media allies, but the damage is done. The question becomes, where do we go from here?

I support conservatism first, Palin a distant second. If she can be the one to present a clear, consistent, and persuasive conservative message, great. If not, I hope someone else can. But she's not above criticism from conservatives just because the left hates her.

Most of the left's criticism are unfair, but so what? When have they ever been fair? That doesn't mean that every criticism of her is unfair.

Posted by: Jason at July 03, 2009 02:30 PM (sV0Yw)

106 I regret just ordering Goldberg's Liberal Fascism. I'll move up Levin's Liberty & Tyranny.

Amazing listening to these talking heads. See how well our government is working? Well, it just makes sense that we should follow the exact same templates and exact same process and exact same mouthpieces that we've followed before... so that we can get the exact same results. Idiots "leading" us with insanity.

The Beltway that is a ceaseless Borg. Doesn't anyone think it's time that maybe we should quit listening to all this "constructive criticism" from the DC bubble? It's a fucking failure and we suffer it and its fools every day.

We want a leader and a manager. Palin can do this. Hell, Obama got to be King and he is neither. Obama had a machine of supporters escorting through the gauntlet. The Right? Oh, let's tear Palin down because, well, the media has been utterly corrupt in smearing her and we should still give the smears life. We shouldn't, however, put up a fight, because well, we just shouldn't.

Now we have the Left and the Right saying she's inadequate. Bullshit. We are seeing a concerted effort by the Left and some "conservatives" to diminish a great person and fine politician. Perfect? No. No one is. But Palin remains entirely capable. She has met with more criticism, the overwhelming majority of which has been unfair, than anyone I've ever seen. She still maintains her class and common appeal. But what is the common thread of critics besides partisanship? An undying committment to status quo and a bastardized election process where image and projection mean more than character and integrity.

I'll listen to Palin. Goldberg? Less now than I did before.

buster, those are slogans and broad concepts, not positions.  Big difference.

Liberals have a government program for any problem you can name. And they can speak at length about each of them.  And they can weave them all together in a nice storyline about sticking up for the little guy.

Conservatives, by contrast, have to run by promising to do less if elected. That takes some explanation.
