It says that 1800 years ago the catholic church conspired to hide the fact that Mary Magdalene conceived a child to Jesus of Nazareth, a line that continues until this very day in a woman who is the descendant of God himself. Biologist, farmer, writer, architect, statesman, geographer...probably a few things I'm forgetting. Jefferson lived at a time when it was possible to become knowledgeable in all fields--not necessarily an expert, but more than "oh, yeah, I heard of that...". Since then, all the scientific fields have exploded. You can pick one of those things and not learn all there is to know. And most people remain ignorant of most fields (see also Congress, regulating technology, health care, the economy, the weather, etc, and most of them not knowing their ass from Al Qaeda).

ginaswo--algorithms are just methods, blueprints if you will. Humans can follow them, computers just follow them faster. Patterson didn't need a computer to create the cypher algorithm...the first programmers (Ada, Babbage) didn't even have electricity.

Vlad strikes back
MOSCOW (Reuters) - Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will use next week's Moscow talks to relieve President Barack Obama of mistaken impressions he remains mired in Cold War thinking, Putin's spokesman said on Firday. The spokesman was reacting to comments Obama made in a pre-trip interview. The U.S. leader told the Associated Press that Putin needed to "understand that the Cold War approach to U.S.-Russian relationship is outdated" and that Putin had "one foot in the old ways of doing business." Putin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, in mildly-expressed comments, said: "I see that he does not possess full information. After visiting Moscow, President Obama will know the realities better. Well, well, well it's good to see that Barry's enlightened diplomacy is working so well. No more of that cowboy stuff that made the world hate us. 12, Jefferson always reminds me of this Heinlein quote: A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects. -Robert A. Heinlein Sadly, we live if a society mostly composed of insects of insects it seems. NPR this morning in full spin for Obama on Honduras: talking about how most countries have condemned the "coup", including Venezuela, but that Obama's approach has been more "nuanced". For the first time, however, there was a reference to the referendum on extending his term that the ousted president was prepping. This was in an interview with a junior cabinet minister, and the NPR reporter quickly reminded us that the US did not consider the "non-binding" referendum to be a "threat to the Honduran Constitution". Yeah, it was just for shits and giggles... until, after promising the poor a free pony in every pot, he won. Then it would have been the Voice of the People. Prediction: NPR is an early harbinger of a shift toward gradually moving Obama to the right side on this issue. But it has to be done carefully, because after sitting on his thumb over the Iranian uprising for a week, he jumped right out of the gate on this one, and didn't leave himself any wiggle room. The press certainly has to work hard at protecting Obama from being exposed as the erratic tyro he is. Posted by: sherlock at July 03, 2009 09:52 AM (L4jPh) 35

They are said to be as light and comfortable as tennis shoes. They laced up and were quite a close match for his khaki suit. 29-- Actually RAH via Lazarus Long... RAH was a huge influence for me early on and ever since. I consider myself a Heinlein Libertarian. I guess nowadays I refine that to: Robert Heinlein/John Derbyshire atheist/agnostic libertarian. "The power to tax, once conceded, has no limits; it contains until it destroys." --The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress is essential. Oh and this from Lazarus Long: "What are the facts? Again and again and again --- what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore divine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, Care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history" --- what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always in to an unknown future; facts are your only chance. Get the facts!" Amen. Posted by: Bat Chain Puller at July 03, 2009 10:09 AM (SCcgT) 42

The MSM wants the communists in power and they will issue their propaganda as needed to that end.

What the Patterson/Jefferson cipher tells us is how hard it is for even very clever people to create usable hand ciphers that are truly secure in a modern sense. The only hand cipher I know of that has what would be considered genuine cryptographic strength (other than a one-time pad) is the Solitaire cipher from Neal Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.

SYDNEY (AFP) –
People who live on vegetarian diets have slightly weaker bones than their meat-eating counterparts, Australian researchers said Thursday.
A joint Australian-Vietnamese study of links between the bones and diet of more than 2,700 people found that vegetarians had bones five percent less dense than meat-eaters, said lead researcher Tuan Nguyen. The issue was most pronounced in vegans, who excluded all animal products from their diet and whose bones were six percent weaker, Nguyen said. From the WaPo's DC lobbyist-Obama admin official- madam story, here is part of the paper's response.
In response to requests for comment, The Post issued a statement that stopped short of canceling the event. Kris Coratti, communications director of Washington Post Media, a division of The Washington Post Company, said: “The flier circulated this morning came out of a business division for conferences and events, and the newsroom was unaware of such communication. It went out before it was properly vetted, and this draft does not represent what the company’s vision for these dinners are, which is meant to be an independent, policy-oriented event for newsmakers. “As written, the newsroom could not participate in an event like this. We do believe there is an opportunity to have a conferences and events business, and that The Post should be leading these conversations in Washington, big or small, while maintaining journalistic integrity. The newsroom will participate where appropriate.” This is the main issue afflicting journalism today...not reporting the news, but wanting to create and lead the news, iow, become the actual story. Thus the endless self-interviewing of reporters as "experts" on any number of topics and issues and presenting these charades as "news". The self-inflicted chalk-line progresses nicely. Here's some disturbing news from the London Times (http://snipurl.com/lphbb): Iran’s top legislative body announced today that British embassy staff accused of inciting post-election violence will be forced to stand trial in Tehran. The surprise move by the Guardian Council caused relations between London and the Iranian regime to sink still further ... Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, head of the Guardian Council which ratified the presidential election on Monday, said: “In these incidents, [the British] embassy had a presence, some people were arrested. Naturally they will be put on trial, they have made confessions.” Not to worry, though. The EU is on the case: After rejecting British and Czech moves to pull out all European ambassadors from Tehran yesterday, the EU agreed [to] a strongly-worded joint letter expected to be published tomorrow. That'll show 'em. Posted by: sauropod at July 03, 2009 10:54 AM (r45p0) 68

There is so much wrong with that statement. You are right though, she will NEVER get anything but BAD press, most of which is a collection of outright lies. We who profess to be conservatives should not repeat ANYTHING that the press says about her.
What we should be doing is repeating the things that people who attend her talks say that she said. We need to cut the media out of any discussion about her whatsoever. This includes Goldberg now.
I agree with Gran. It was an attack. Posted by: Vic at July 03, 2009 11:03 AM (5ynkO) 71
It might be interesting if she uses that Washinton outsider status to turn the GOP on its ear and start a third party: the conservative party. IMO voters would abandon the clueless, corrupt and increasingly liberal GOP. Most red staters already feel alienated from them already. I think within 6 years the GOP could count on about 5-10% of the overall vote. Folks like Krauthammer would be bewildered and refuse to accept reality that they had isolated themselves from the average everyday Republican voter. When election time came, those 5-10% would probably secretly pull the handle for the conservative candidate anyway as they would know that their own candidate was a wasted vote. Palin's role in this new party would not be to run as a candidate, but rather to run, shape and mold the new party to be successful and to be a fundraiser/rainmaker. Media types like Beck, Limbaugh, Malkin, and Hannity etc would be the new superstars and liberal north eastern country club repubs left out in the cold. The power brokers in the GOP are the Washinton insider types that are exactly what is wrong with the party. They have money and plenty of access to power but few votes. IMO they feel that in the last election McCain didn't win because he was not liberal enough. An interesting fact that these folks often overlook about the McCain campaign (and that Schmidt and his ilk are only too painfully aware of) is that it was almost broke before Palin was named. They were in a state of disarray. IMO that was OK with the Krauthammer types because they wanted Republicans to lose so they could play the underdog and get sympathy. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way as the press was delighted and then proceeded to rub an ocean's worth of salt in the wound. The democrats were delighted because the know that they will never be held accountable by any of their ADD voters/press because they are incable of googling history nor remembering any event over 6 months old.... Sigh. If you actually read Jonah's article you'll see that he dishes out all sorts of praise on Sarah too, and rightly so. She deserves a great deal of praise. I'd vote for Sarah over Romney any day. But she's not God, she's not perfect, she has some work to do. Complaining about the press is one of those things. Look, how else are we going to accept constructive criticism if not from those who are sympathetic to our view in the first place? We understand that "constructive criticism" that comes from Kos or Carville is meaningless. (Same goes about Frum and Noonan.) But from Jonah? Hell he wrote a whole book calling out liberalism for its fascist roots. That doesn't sound like a squish to me.

73 I agree JG is not a squish, but Palin won't ever get a break from the movers in her own party because she reminds them of just how irrelevant they themselves are. As far as her not acting like she will run...good. As long as she is out of the official mix, the Democrats can now focus on their real enemies: other democrats. Remember that the diametric opposite of a fanatic is a fanatic. Lets let them destroy themselves from within... If Palin were to run in 2012, the best thing she could do is get nominated by a draft Palin campaign. This would necessarily be grassroots. It would tear folks like Romney to pieces for the primaries and give her a great deal of momentum for the national campaign. Posted by: Bozo at July 03, 2009 11:28 AM (4uAeQ) 77
@73 "sigh" yourself. I did read it, and I stand by my statements. The problem with the conservative intellectuals isn't that Sarah might not read up and become more policy oriented - they're concerned that she won't read the correct books that shape the intellecutals' philosophy. Coming from a union background and as someone who started her own small business, Sarah might be more from a Teddy Roosevelt or William Jennings Bryan populist tradition, which threatens the massive corporate interests that backed Bush through most of the decade and Obama now. Romney, if elected, would surely be a Big Business president. Romney seems intent on doubling down on neoconservative foreign policy. There's no guarantee Sarah will go for either. Remember, strong defense and the big business neoconservative movement are not one and the same - in fact, they butt heads on important national security issues (immigration, anyone?) Her actual or precieved naivety or lack of understanding on issues could be a good thing. We complain about the wonks and talking heads, she is a breath of fresh air(for now). Like JG said , she has to strike that balance between her hard core supporters and those who aren't quite sold, tuff to do nowadays-you cannot deny the microscope she is under. And she has to wear those tight little running shorts...often!

I love cryptology. I'm reading Cryptomonicon for the 2nd time. Also, I'm re-posting this tidbit from the ONT because I am still a bit surprised by the change: Holy cripes, how did I miss this in the news today (from MSNBC): The Obama administration will proceed with a Bush-era plan to use National Security Agency assistance in screening government computer traffic on private-sector networks, with AT&T as the likely test site, according to three current and former government officials. ... The activities of any private citizen who visits a "dot-gov" Web site or sends an e-mail to a civilian government employee would be screened. That's a fair criticism for every part of the conservative spectrum. You can only complain about the media bias so much. Let it be the elephant in the room that people don't talk about. Don't keep score: "You covered A but didn't cover B!" will rightly come down to apples and oranges for the dull undecided voters..

I thought Goldberg's piece was basically fair. Palin is diminished in stature every time she gets into a fight with the media or a late-night comic. Not to mention the ongoing trickle of embarrassing revelations about her family, most of whom seem to be auditioning for guest spots on the Ricki Lake Show. Goldberg uses the term "laughingstock." I'd say "sideshow." There's a trailer-trash carnival-midway aura around the Palin clan that's rapidly rendering her unelectable. I'm not sure it matters much. If the economy recovers anytime in the next three years, Obama will probably be reelected, no matter who is running against him. Even if the economy is still in the toilet, I doubt Palin could defeat an incumbent president with the media wholly on his side. She can give a great speech, but she's terrible in interviews, and she doesn't seem to know the issues. Add in all the personal baggage, and I just don't see what all the excitement is about.

Perhaps you need to read the response from Conservatives4Palin. There has ONLY been 1 time when she spoke out on the media bias and that was in the interview for the documentary film about the media bias.
The comments from the “late night comic” were across the line and needed to be addressed.
Goldberg’s piece was just another opportunistic POS designed to sell copy and push the agenda of the liberal wing of the party. Posted by: Vic at July 03, 2009 12:47 PM (5ynkO) 93

It's remarkable just how far ahead of it's time Jefferson's wheel cipher was. For all practical purposes, it was unbreakable until almost mid-20th century. Even during WW2, it was good enough for low-level communications. The Army used a variant device called the M-138 and the Germans (no slouches at code-breaking) never cracked it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M-94 It's a shame Jefferson's device was used so little by the US. For most of the 18th, 19th and the first 40 years or so of the 20th, the US had crap for crytpo-systems. BTW, the linked article is referring to a differenty system one of Jefferson's friends came up with. That used pencil and paper - Jefferson used a simple machine for his brilliancy. 96 She didn't pick that fight with Letterman. He started that with his rape "joke". What was she supposed to do - just let it go? If some late-night hack had made a tasteless joke about a member of Ronald Reagan's family, the Gipper would have responded with a deft quip and a smile. Then he would have "let it go." He knew the importance of staying above the fray. By putting herself on an equal footing with Letterman, Palin diminished herself. After all, no one is going to elect Letterman president.
