Awful...US Soldier Captured In Afghanistan

Oh God.

A U.S. soldier missing from his base in eastern Afghanistan since Tuesday is believed to have been captured by Taliban militants, the military said Thursday.

In a statement issued from U.S. military headquarters in Kabul, officials said "we are exhausting all available resources to ascertain his whereabouts and provide for his safe return."

...Military officials in Afghanistan, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the situation, said the missing soldier appears to have walked off his base into an unsecured area. It was not clear why he had apparently done so.

Let's pray this turns out better than seems likely it will.

Kipling suggested

"when you're wounded and left

On Afghanistan's plains,

and the women come out

to cut up what remains,

just roll to your rifle

and blow out your brains

and go to your God

like a soldier"

They mentioned this on Fox but didn’t have a lot of details. Be prepared for another gross video to be released.

4 The circumstances seem a little...odd.

But assuming things are what they appear to be on the face of it...I'm not the prayin' type, but prayers for the soldier and his family.

I heard sometime that an Athenian could walk the planet without fear because everyone knew that if you hurt a citizen of Athens it would reign down the full force of the Athenian Army no matter where it was.

Is it too snarky to presume that, because Barry "promised" to close Guantanimo, the Taliban will send the soldier back unharmed... with a free Bible?

Isn't that the math our apolgizing Prez has been using?

12 For military families whose hearts are in their throats right now, some reports say that the family of the missing soldier has already been notified.

19 teej -

No, I'm from Wisconsin.  "Winger" actually refers to 'WI N G' - Wisconsin National Guard.  I have a son who is with them, and I kind of took on the acronym.

Posted by: mama winger at July 02, 2009 09:14 AM (eTkwe)

20 Hmmm.  I wonder if it is going to be similar to that Army soldier that went missing in Baghdad a few years back that was muslim.  Why in God's name would you go out on your own in EASTERN AFGHANISTAN???  It was either booze or chicks is my guess.

21 I see. Cool way to come up with a handle. And from all of us who served before him (some of us, long before) thank your son for keeping it going.

22 I actually hope Ogabe passes this test.

Yeah, I hope he's all over it.

I expect if he mentions it at all, it'll be next week sometime.  Long weekend ahead--first he has some dreary boring irrelevant history crap he can't weasel out of, then he has to take The Thing somewhere expensive and trendy.

Boggles the mind.  I have to believe the troops are constantly cautioned about doing anything like this and/or made aware of tricks that might be used to lure them away.

I pray for his safe return.

As the mother of a soldier, my stomach turned when I read about this.

32 If the Taliban is smart they will trade the soldier for some captured terrorists - and Obama will deal with them.

If the Taliban is not smart and they behead the soldier on camera...well...even a spineless wretch like Obama will have to do something.

38 As someone else has pointed out, prayer is what's called for right about now--not for his life because we know there's no chance of that, but that his end will be quick and will hopefully serve some greater purpose. That brave Italian comes to mind, whose name unfortunately escapes me, the one who told his captors, 'Let me show you how an Italian dies.' He ruined their video, his bravery ruined their video. He made them look like the cowardly bastards they are.

There is nothing so bad that could happen to this guy which would cause zero to take any serious action.

Nothing.

Posted by: Richard Aubrey at July 02, 2009 11:11 AM (d0ih6)

40 I can assure all of you, the Taliban won't kill this soldier.  In combat the Taliban would kill any target they could actually shoot, but as for captives, these guys don't believe in the same type of stuff Al Queda does.  They'll ask for some stuff, we'll deny them, and eventually they'll either release him, or we'll rescue him.

45 I recall reading a story back during the "Charlie Wilson's War" days.  It seems that the Afghans would capture the occasional Russian soldier.  They would cut his achilles tendons so that he couldn't run away and then they would take turns sodomizing him for a couple of weeks then they would kill him.

That's just the way the Pushtun roll.
