WSJ Opinion: Wal-Mart's Latest Move on "Pay or Play" Healthcare Not Necessarily Altruistic

MFO.

This week the nation's largest employer blessed an employer mandate, aka "pay or play." This would require businesses that do not offer "meaningful coverage" -- i.e., government-approved -- to pay some percentage of their payroll to a federal insurance plan. This mandate is one of the more controversial policies in the Democratic health package, and Wal-Mart's endorsement will help it along, or at least give liberals political cover against business criticism.

The Boys from Bentonville are a little more interested in the cover it provides them against assaults from the Service Employees International Union and the United Food and Commercial Workers, both of which have been fighting like hell to organize Wal-Mart stores (and losing) for 10+ years.

Not to mention giving themselves another competitive advantage over smaller businesses who can't afford to do what they already do, which is pay workers above minimum wage and negotiate powerfully better rates for private health care insurance because of their f'n' ginormousness.

Wal-Mart sees two other advantages in this beyond the PR win. a) They get to help steer the crafting of a public health care bill, and b) pushing the public health care plan helps them dodge a very real hit to the bottom line, a forced employer health care requirement targeted at businesses who employ lower-wage earners.

They're terrified of being shut out of Democratic health negotiations lest they get stuck with the bill. Wal-Mart may also be trying to pre-empt an employer mandate the Senate is considering that would target companies with predominantly low-wage, low-skilled or entry-level work forces.

The problem the rest of us face is that businesses would just as soon hand off this crap to government and pass along the incremental cost rather than eat it at the expense of competitiveness.

Meanwhile Obama continues to lie about his intent (to get rid of private insurance altogether, while saying he doesn't want that at all) by claiming all innocently "If it's such a great deal, why are they worried about competing against the public plan especially when they say government can't do anything?"

*coughBLOWJOBcough*

It's utter bullshit, but I repeat myself, because the public health option will not have to carry huge financial reserves that the private carriers must, and the public option will dictate the fees to providers for service (they already do), private carriers will continue to have to negotiate these things. And take into account the forced lowball from the other side.

Not exactly a level playing field.

The good news is that all Americans will get to enjoy crappier care, pay for it anyway in taxes, in many cases die waiting for care, and euthanize the elderly for the benefit of the greater good.

SO I don't see a downside to this, but I'm still working through the details.

Now hiring with free healthcare....soon.

So, which senetor switched their 'yes' vote on card check?  We will have to keep an eye out for the congressman that switched from yes to no.  You know that at least one did.

We should really call the Pres.  'Back Door' Pres.:

*He likes to f*ck us and f*ck with us.

*He shows you one room while they are burning the Constitution in the other.

*If he can't get it done, he has the EPA threaten they will do it.

*His secret meetings.

*Everything is done back room/thug/union style.

Glenn Beck had a guest on yesterday who said they wanted to do this because it would give them a competitive advantage over Target. i.e. Target would be forced to provide insurance for their lower workers at a higher cost than Wal-Mart.

(Note that Wal-Mart already provides insurance for associates who stay with them a while contrary to the lies being spread by the uinions)

One other thing, like the MA fiasco all the businesses know that within a few years it will all devolve into a one payer government system. That is what Bambi wants, that is what the businesses want. They all want this but none of them are considering the long term impact (or they just do not care).

8 I see Wal-Mart's actions no different than WWII Nazi collaborators (I automatically win this arguement now!) who helped the SS ferret out resistance fighters, eventually becoming victims themselves in the end.  They're being extremely shortsighted about this, i.e. getting the union thugs off their backs.  In effect, they're helping to sell the rest of us out.

9 This week I needed to buy a swim cap.  Wal-Mart did not have the swim cap.  Target did have the swim cap.  Target does not carry macadamia nuts.  Wal-Mart does.  Target has an entire wall of Jelly Belly dispensers at my disposal.  However, the lever on the Berry Blue one does not work.

Outcome:  Fuck 'em both.

Payroll falls worse than expected.

The entire article is butt clinching.

Equity-index futures extended losses, with contracts on the Standard & Poor’s 500 Stock Index falling 1.3 percent to 907.00 at 8:36 a.m. in New York. Treasuries rose, sending yields on benchmark 10-year notes to 3.510 percent from 3.538 percent late yesterday.

Government payrolls decreased by 52,000, the biggest decline since July 2007, after dropping 10,000 the prior month.

The decrease reflects the layoff of workers hired on a temporary basis to prepare for the 2010 census. The U.S. Census Bureau has said it will hire more than 1.4 million people over the next year to conduct the population count that happens once every 10 years.

Here's will O will get the 'looking up' numbers.

HRW’s anti-Israel obsession was stated as the major reason for holding this Saudi fundraiser: “The group is facing a shortage of funds because of the global financial crisis and the work on Israel and Gaza, which depleted HRW’s budget for the region.”

13 Keep in mind, I think this entire push for socialized medicine is abhorrent, and the idea that an industry giant like WalMart would buy into it even more so.  The only question I have about this is, what is wrong with "...what they already do, which is pay workers above minimum wage and negotiate powerfully better rates for private health care insurance."  Weren't we being fed the line of b.s. from the unions that WalMart was somehow abusing their workers?  This kind of puts the lie to that, doesn't it? Not that we didn't already know it.

15 Intergalactic Health Care - good campaign issue, be in favor of, and keep the details fuzzy. Win election.

Enacting and legislating Intergalactic Health Care - political third rail

But you gotta say this about Slick Willie; he knew when to pack it in and move on and the voters didn't seem to hold it against him. Don't think the Obamateur Administration will be that smart. There's  probably a way to do it, but I think financial conservatives would be much better than liberals at coming up with a solution that won't further bankrupt the country.

Maybe he didn’t say “one payer” but he did say the government was running the system and paying for most of the costs.

And it was a disaster.

Posted by: Vic at July 02, 2009 08:38 AM (5ynkO)

21 Just as Medicare already dictates most health care payment schedules for the insurance industry today, a government (clown) foot in the door will dictate all payment schedules in the future.  "One payer"  health care is moot.  And as a physician, I doubt the "one payer" will pay at all.

Posted by: dfbaskwill at July 02, 2009 08:56 AM (7Gs5S)

22 Yeah this is just WalMart's transparent attempt to use government as a club against its competitors.  It wasn't that long ago that WalMart also campaigned for a higher minimum wage, even though most of its employees already make more than minimum wage.  Why?  Because its competitors do make minimum wage.

Check this out for a revealing look into the mind of WalMart:

Not to mention the public option has the luxury of operating at a loss.  Permanently.  How can you beat that competion?

Watched another one of those so-called “fair and balanced” debates at lunch. This one between that idiot duechnozzle Bob Beckle and some toad who was a minor official in the Bush administration.

Beckle spewed one damn lie after another and the idiot from Bush & co didn’t dispute a word of it.

The topic was “taxing other people’s health benefits to pay for the Obama plan” and the reversal of the no middle class tax hikes.

He started with a snarky remark about how he pays for his own health plan and he is tired of subsidizing the tax free benefits that other people get.  Proper answer: STFU lying duechnozzle. It was your boy Clinton and the Dem congress who took away the tax deduction for health insurance and expenses. Answer provided: crickets chirping

He said presidents always have to reverse themselves on a few campaign promises. He referenced Bush’s “no nation building campaign promise”. Proper response: There you go again lying dickweasel. How about a little thing about terrorists flying aircraft into buildings and killing 3,000 people calling for a change of plans while the only thing changed with Il Douche is his street address. Answer received: Obama should keep his promises.

I could go on but it is all the same. It looked like campaign 2008 all over again.

Folks, until we run the milquetoast liberal weenies out of the positions of power in the Republican party we are doomed.

When Wal-Mart refused to stop carrying magazines such as US, Rolling Stone, and Vanity Fair after their continued hit pieces on Sarah Palin and her family, I lost all respect for Bentonville.   They clearly do not take care of the people that take care of them.  Think Sears & Roebuck.  That is Wal-Mart's future.
