| Barack Obama: Sarah Palin Just Didn't Have the Time That I Had to Prepare for National OfficeBuried in Todd Purdham's hit piece: Barack Obama's own concession that it simply takes time Sarah Palin didn't have to learn how to become an an acceptable, viable national candidate: . At least one savvy politician—Barack Obama—believed Palin would never have time to get up to speed. He told his aides that it had taken him four months to learn how to be a national candidate, and added, “I don’t care how talented she is, this is really a leap.”As I said ten times during the campaign, Barack Obama is just Sarah Palin plus six months of briefing books and town halls. On the other hand, she's kinda making me look like a liar by waiting so long to start that process. She seems to prefer instead to keep her politicking within her comfort zone of the personal, which may please some of the already-converted, but it does nothing to persuade that additional 6-8% of the electorate (at a minimum) needed to win an election. Barack Obama is just Sarah Palin plus six months of briefing books and town halls. I take issue with this statement. It is clearly fallacious. For one, she has very nice breasts. Among other things! I'm just saying, you know... for example, randomly, that's one of them. Nice breasts. Posted by: Entropy at June 30, 2009 07:59 PM (cok/k) 2

I really like Sarah Palin. I have liked Sarah Palin from day one. However I think Sarah Palin may be smart enough to realize that she doesn't want the Presidency and is happy in Alaska with her lovely family. I do think, however, that she is having a wonderful time keeping the democrats off balance at every turn and she is having a wonderful time keeping you republicans who are against her off balance too. She is doing a great service for the republican party. Similar to the service Hillary did to the dems. I like being an independent, I can't stand all the parties.

"waiting so long to start that process"
Are you f'in kidding me? The election is almost 3.5 years away. She's had some serious fires to put out in Alaska, with the Dems trying to kill her and the inbred establishment Republicans trying to get back at her. She's laying relatively low because she *can't* run like everybody else: as soon as she does *anything* outside of Alaska, it's big news. This is her huge strength -- it's the only way a conservative message will get out there in this media environment -- but dictates a rather different strategy than the "hey, look at me! I'm important!" crowd. The precedent isn't Obama in 2008, it's Bush 2000. The Democratic party picks pretty much randomly, but Bush knew he would be the nominee even before Dole lost. BS, he has been a national candidate all of his life. Nothing he did in Illinois was "local". I think you are 100% wrong, Muffy. The best quotation I ever heard about Sarah Palin - from somebody who worked with her as an adversary - was, "She's the fastest learner I've ever met and remembers everything." Quoting from memory, and sorry I can't find the link. I expect Palin will return and kick the holy living shit out of every asshat who gets in her path next time. It will be fun to watch. The most dangerous enemy is the one you underestimate. Both leftards and head-up-ass conceited conservatives hate Palin, and think she's stupid. Well, she's not stupid, she has genius level total recall, as many who, you know, actually know her, can attest to. Frankly, I'll be just as happy watching the conservatives she brings to tears as the leftards. stupid. Well, she's not stupid, she has genius level total recall, as
many who, you know, actually know her, can attest to."
Mwa ha ha. Whether or not this is true, it will certainly become the story if (when!) she wins and is successful. To the average lefty, a conservative can only be two things: a drooling idiot or an eeeeeeeeeeeevil machinating super-genius. (Or, with those sufficiently hated -- i.e. Bush -- both, at the exact same time.) So as soon as it's obvious that Generic Anti-Conservative Smear #1 isn't working, they'll switch to #2. I can't wait. Has there been a post here about ALBA, Zelaya, Chavez and Mahmoud? And how Obama is strangely in line with ALBA's mission statement? Honduras has joined Latin America's anti-imperialist project ALBA, hoping the trade bloc will solve problems caused by capitalism. The Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas "doesn't commit us to anything, it opens up hope for us in solving the serious problems created by global capitalism," President Manuel Zelaya said at a meeting with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez on Aug 26 2008. "Honduras did not ask permission from any imperialist country to join ALBA," Zelaya stressed. Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Dominica make up the alliance, which offers development projects and trade programs for the impoverished nations in the region. Honduran President Manuel Zelaya signed the documents in a public ceremony attended by ALBA members Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, Bolivian President Evo Morales, Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Cuban Vice-President Carlos Laje. And re Mahmoud, there is this from ALBA: El Universal: The member countries of the Bolivarian Alternative for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA), a Latin American integration project which describes itself as "socialist and anti-imperialist," backed Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and rejected "foreign interference" in Iran's domestic issues. In the final declaration of the 6th Summit of ALBA, the presidents of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez; Bolivia, Evo Morales; Nicaragua; Daniel Ortega; and Ecuador, Rafael Correa, condemned a "smear campaign against this brotherly country" after the results of the vote held last June 12 were made known and challenged by the opposition, AFP reported. It is not throwing the only check against Pelosi and Obama out the window.
Some check. Name one thing that has been stopped so far by refighting last November, looking for "common ground" and being afraid of this guy. Someone has to throw the gauntlet in the dust and make a case for limited government. Just this morning we discussed Steele's latest think piece where he claimed health care "reform" is necessary and only wanted to oppose parts of Obama's plan. FAIL. Posted by: Circa (Insert Year Here) at June 30, 2009 09:03 PM (uM+37) 106
There is no meaningful check on Obama and his party now. Majority in the House and 60 in the Senate means they do whatever they want. We need to make a point of being not-the-party-of-Obama. At this point it would suffice to toss one randomly selected crossover vote out of the caucus for every major Obama program that passes.

I agree with the comparison between Palin and Obama on the briefing and townhall meetings, but I disagree with your assessment that she is remaining in her comfort zone. For one thing, she still wants to govern Alaska well, and Obama started running for POTUS before he was sworn into the Senate. I think she is being cautious, probably too cautious for 2012, but who knows? She has made a few trips, pressed the flesh, and was still a big draw, as in the whole 50th anniversery of Alaska/Seward thing. She is still the target of nasty attacks, including from the McCain campaign, so I can see where she would wait a bit for that to heal.
Right now, the consensus is that no Republican can win in 2012 (that is changing, though). If that consensus is right, then it makes no sense for her to charge into 2012, especially if it takes only 6 months to actually prepare for the campaign. She can study, travel some more, and improve without it appearing obviously ambitious a la Hillary or Michelle Obama, which I think is pretty safe. Needless to say, I voted for the Chick. Besides, Romney is ready for 2012. If we are going to lose in 2012, let it be Romney. Posted by: Scott at June 30, 2009 09:09 PM (f3TRn) 115

As for Palin, I can't decide. Is it better or worse to start your campaign so early? One the one hand, an early effort means that the opponent will have an extra long period of time to shred her to pieces. But, on the other hand, it means that whatever they have will be revealed early so no reporter will hold on to a story that, with time, may be written by another reporter. So, you get all the bad out of the way. But...wouldn't that just exhaust her further? She's already being raked over the coals with bullshit lawsuits and accusations. Is it necessary to jump in quite this early? Hey. What about that whole Republican Governors organization. What's her future role there? Posted by: jmflynny at June 30, 2009 09:10 PM (L6mOe) 119

1) I believe Mrs. Palin should concentrate on governing Alaska well. That's the best thing she can do for herself right now.
2) And if she has any time left over after work, she should be doing fundraising and helping the Reagan wing of the party--specific candidates like Mr. Toomey. If she's giving speeches that advocate smaller government and criticize the inherent problems of larger government, she can help rebuild the Republican brand more than anything I've seen from the party in the last 8 years. No she should not campaign for the next few years. Just give speeches every so often and say she's not saying. 3) Her immediate retaliation of John Kerry's joke and her take-down of Letterman were a good start. You hit Sarah; she hurts you--with a smile. She's got to make it cost something to dis her. Posted by: Steve Poling at June 30, 2009 11:52 PM (UWHTf) 186

Why would Palin run against a guy who already crushed her once at the polls First off, 52% - 48% is not getting crushed when GOP voters hated the top of the ticket. Sarah Palin was responsible for giving McShame a respectable finish and dragging his sorry ass over the finish line. Also, "crushed" doesn't come to mind when you know Metro had 100s of millions coming in from his Saudi friends and still barely eked it out. Now get back in the basement. You left the TV on. You seem to forget that McCain was the top of the ticket, and not the other way around. The fact that she became the focal point for the attacks by both the Obama campaign and the media from day one should be an indication of how much of a threat she was perceived to be. She needs more polishing and to become more policy wonkish, but her basic instincts are good. Also, four years is an eternity in politics. After the 2004 elections pundits were wondering out loud if the election marked the end of the Democrats. Four years later, and look at where the Republicans are now. She seems to prefer instead to keep her politicking within her comfort zone of the personal, which may please some of the already-converted, but it does nothing to persuade that additional 6-8% of the electorate (at a minimum) needed to win an election. Well, the left sure seems concerned about that 6-8% moving toward Palin. Right now, Palin is doing the job Alaskans expect her to do. If you examine her record, you could make a strong case that she's America's best Governor. If Palin runs in 2012, the entire GOP primary will be about her. The other guys will try to portray her as a lightweight and scrutinize her record as Gov. If she successfully defends that record, she'll win easily. The general election will be about Obama's record, but if Palin doesn't take care of business now, she'll never get to that point. She's doing the right thing for her constituents, and the right thing politically. Posted by: Mr. Wednesday Night at July 01, 2009 01:38 AM (FD3EH) 204
Sarah! What is best in life?
" To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their campaign advisers" That is good! The secret of media has always carried with it a mystery. You must learn its riddle, Sarah. You must learn its discipline. For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. [Points to sword] Sarah: Hey, old man, where did you get this stuff? The Wizard: The dead... the gods are pleased with you, they will watch the battle. Sarah: Are they going to help? Do you REALLY want to make this argument? Look, give Gov. Palin credit for what she's done, but let's not compare. All I can say about Palin is that I'd be proud to fight alongside her, her husband and her son to defend the country that the Kenyan is doing his best to destroy. I wouldn't shake Obama's hand or even acknowledge his existence in person and that same level of contempt goes for most of the 535 sitting on the Hill. I could probably count the ones I have even the slightest amount of respect for on the fingers of both hands. It's pathetic we've come to this state. That said, we're here. It's going to get worse, too. I believe that our current form of government is going to change drastically because now neither side thinks it works anymore. The vast middle who used to believe in it have seen it hijacked and used to facilitate great crimes. They don't believe in it anymore and the only real question remaining is what will take its place. I don't think we'll have to wait long to find out, either. Posted by: mac at July 01, 2009 04:11 AM (CzB/V) 212

Exactly how hard do you think it was for Senator Manboobs to vote "present" over and over and over and over, letting the other 99 douchebags carry the weight? What exactly do you think he was doing "over" those 12.6 million people except accept their hysterical, irrational accolades for standing there doing nothing and making them feel progressive for supporting him? Isn't it obvious by now that Senator Zero's "preparation" for the presidency was resoundingly inadequate? Posted by: Kensington at July 01, 2009 04:20 AM (ZqTlA) 213
"Let me get this straight: a man who was Senator over 12.6 million people is not as prepared to become President as a Governor who oversees 660,000 people." Let me get one thing straight: nobody is senator over anybody. A senator represents, he doesn't govern: he sits in his chamber, and talks, and casts his vote - nothing more. A mayor or governor, by contrast, is an executive. He draw up budgets. He makes appointments to managerial posts. He oversees day-to-day operation. Politically, he shapes and guides the passage of legislation. In emergencies, he organizes and commands the relief effort. That is the sort of experience that is relevant to the presidency, which the Constitution defines as the office of "chief executive". A large state like Alaska, with its widely dispersed population, extreme climate, and natural resources, presents unique challenges to a governor, on both the political and the executive areas. Although its population is small, the challenges to an executive are great. Obama, by contrast, had never run so much as a hot dog stand when he was elected to the office of chief executive. He was utterly inexperienced: and no, I don't count four years of running for president, occasionally interrupted by a "present" vote in the Senate, to be relevant experience. Simply in terms of experience relevant to the office of president, Sarah Palin in 2008 was far better prepared than Barack Obama was - or, for that matter, than John McCain or Joe Biden. I'll go further: any governor, hell, any mayor of any town, anywhere in the country, is better prepared, in terms of relevant experience, to become president than Obama was in 2008. Now, I'm not saying that being mayor of Dead Man's Fang, Nevada, is somehow sufficient qualification for the presidency: it's not. But I do say that that mayor is better qualified, in terms of experience, to serve as president than Obama was in 2008. Now, I realize that some think Obama is some sort of super-genius. I see no evidence of that myself. Obama's appeal is in the fact that he is black - but not too black. If he were white, he would have been laughed out of the presidental race. If he were dark and "talked black", like, say, Jesse Jackson, the white power establishment in the Democratic Party would have seen him as too threatening. So, we got our black white man: a symbol, a cypher, an empty suit, and now we're paying for our folly. Obama strikes me as being more like a Warren Harding: a handsome, personable man with strong ties to the media and a domineering, ambitious wife, who, thanks to a reaction against a deeply unpopular wartime president, is propelled into an office for which he is utterly unfit. And if the last six months are any indication, then he and his allies will have thoroughly wrecked the country well before November 2012. Posted by: Brown Line at July 01, 2009 05:18 AM (yR8jX) 214

Didn't polls indicate that about 13% of the support for the GOP ticket in November came from Palin (IIRC), which was a much higher vote tally than most VP candidates can bring to the ticket? Do you think it's the case that that doesn't extrapolate to strong popularity among Republicans already, even though they had only a short window of insight into her policies during the campaign, plus her huge popularity among Alaskans? (I guess I'm just asking for an opinion on whether she really isn't doing enough so far to ensure the support would be there for a run for president in 2012 or 2016, or whether just doing her current job well for now would translate into support for a presidential bid later).

His antipathy against all American allegiance is his own disgrace. His popularity wanes not from disinterest from citizens but from strong repulsion. Why would Palin run
against a guy who already crushed her the loathed McCain once at the polls when she can
just wait another four years and run against _____?
Because, in 2012, Obama will actually have a record. And it won't be a good one: Record unemployment, high inflation, massive debt, high interest rates, less freedom in the name of 'green' orthodoxy, greater danger around the world from feckless foreign policy, more welfare at home, and incredibly higher taxes. Obama ran as a 'new' politician, but has been nothing but a boilerplate liberal. He ran as an enigma in 2009, only defined by the fiction he wove around himself. Now he has to run against reality, and the evidence of his record. Jimmy Carter x 10. Never mind the real issue that you willfully misunderstand: America has not moved Left. The government has wound up moving Left because the Right was not being represented by the GOP (the supposedly conservative party), and conservative voters stopped supporting them. The party that keeps its base wins, the party that loses its base loses. Very simple. A Conservative candidate will win, especially in a country that's tired of the radical Leftism of this supposed 'centrist' President and Congress. 2010 will tell the tale: Big losses for the Dems, despite ACORN tampering, vote fraud, illegal campaign contributions, and armed thugs at polling places. Obama will be forced to tack to the center if he wants to compete in 2012, but can only do so by repudiating his policies since being elected, which, again, does him no favors. If Palin is the conservative candidate, or if someone else is, matters little. The conservative will win. Posted by: nickless at July 01, 2009 08:24 AM (MMC8r) 229
no, obama has something else going for him that palin does not: media savy. i have said it before and i will say it again with the hopes that someone somewhere will listen to me before it's too late. sarah palin, although i respect her and like her, is NOT a viable candidate for president. if the rep party puts her up for a run against obama in the next election he will clean her clock. she is HATED by the vast majority of the people. yes, the majority of people do not follow issues closely and only catch the headline and of course miss the retractions printed on the back page.of course the NARRATIVE on palin is untrue but that does not matter! the truth does not speak for itself. people, hello! when will conservatives and republicans learn that it doesn't matter what the truth is, what matters is what people THINK the truth is. palin is soooooooo naive when it comes to the media. she doesn't know how to handle herself. she comes across as so folksy and "aw shucks," it's embarresing. she has missed the opportunity to re-create herself since the election. instead of laying low, hiring TOP media and PR people to teach her and work hard to reshape herself she has stuck her neck out again and again. the turkey interview was the last straw for me. that was a set up from the get go and she fell for it. reagan would have seen that set up from a mile away - ANY savy candidate would have seen that from a mile away. so please, please get it through your heads that she is NOT the candidate. she will do nothing but give us four more years of obama and we can not afford that!

So far Palin is following, almost exactly, the same path as Ronald Reagan.
In the mid-70's Reagan was considered a "joke" as a Presidential candidate. He misfired badly in 1976 (selecting liberal Richard Schweiker for VP prior to the convention) .. only to come back boldly in 1980. The Left fears Sarah Palin .. and they should. Essentially true. Barry's been busy writing books about himself, practicing his side-to-side teleprompter reading technique and being groomed by the DNC as a puppet-king for their liberal-socialist agenda, while doing nothing for the people of Illinois as Senator.
Sarah, instead of memorizing SCOTUS cases and assembling a national-level staff, has been busy doing things like eliminating bi-partisan corruption from Alaska energy boards, building pipelines, strong-arming oil companies to pay dividends to citizens for taking natural resources and achieving the highest approval rating of any governor in the nation. Four years from now Sarah will have Obama's national candidate preparedness. But four years from now will Obama have Sarah's achievements? So far, I see less than zero. Posted by: annak at July 01, 2009 08:37 AM (M4IOE) And this is what you will hear from the anti-palinites. It doesn't matter what you think. Sarah is hated by the Majority of the people ( and that's a fact just don't bother checking take my word for it). She's niave, she can't handle herself. "folksy" , "Emberassing"...all the negative buzzwords you need to hear and believe. Complete and utter bullshit. Posted by: Boskar at July 01, 2009 12:19 PM (pUO5u) 243
the reason i like Sarah Palin is because she hasn't been thur the same academic/social comformity grinder as the rest of the "acceptable" canidates, i could care less if she doesn't know who the name of the vice president of Mongolia. she's fine just like she is. Preparing to be a candidate? Heh. In his case, that's sort of like the Billy Joel lyric...all he needed were looks and a whole lotta money.
On the other hand, it's taking him time he doesn't have to get up to a minimal level of competent governance. Let alone her level. Posted by: Rich Fader at July 01, 2009 01:17 PM (pDTBP) 246
Barack Obama is just Sarah Palin plus six months of briefing books and town halls.
... Minus any executive experience, common sense, honesty, or rational thought. You missed the other side of the equation, you really should double check your work before you hand it in next time. You'd be lucky to get partial credit here; I'm just saying, teachers tend not to be impressed when you declare an equality while only doing half the work. Ace,
your entire post is wrong on so many levels. Palin has character, Obama does not. Palin came from a totally different background with different life events that have shaped her political as well as moral beliefs. Obama and Palin are nothing alike except for their lack of experience on the national scene. It takes longer than 6 mothns to form a person. It takes a lifetime. Saying Palin and Obama are alike is like saying Castro and Reagan are alike because that had years as a head of state. You can do better than what this post says. Posted by: unseen at July 01, 2009 05:36 PM (aVGmX) 248
Why would Palin run against a guy who already crushed her once
Why do libtards seem to think that Obama was running against Palin, not McCain? And why did a 2-percentage-point split mean Bush 'didn't have a mandate,' while a 3-percentage-point split, with the same voter turnout as in 2004, is "crush[ing]" the opposition? Obama is losing support fast on economic matters. Even people who voted for him are waking up to the fact that he hasn't got a clue and that he basically panicked and flushed an unprecedented amount of money down the toilet with no measurable effect. If America's sovereign rating gets cut he. is. gone. Meanwhile Alaska has budget surpluses in the billions. Think about what that means for Palin's platform if she runs in '12. Budget surpluses in the billions in her state, vs record deficits in Washington, with administration officials admitting left right and centre that they don't have a clue on the economy and never did. The only way you'll beat her is if the zombie MSM manage to resurrect themselves for one last battle. Posted by: mandible claw at July 01, 2009 10:48 PM (QKrrS) 249
Why would Palin run against a guy who already crushed her once
Actually on second thoughts this "Obama beat Palin once already" meme is kind of a tacit admission of how scared the left are of her. In actual fact, Palin brought enough support to the ticket despite the guy on the top, that they ran Obama almost as close as the previous election, despite every single Republican everywhere ever hating McCain.
