She has made a few trips, pressed the flesh, and was still a big draw, as in the whole 50th anniversery of Alaska/Seward thing.  She is still the target of nasty attacks, including from the McCain campaign, so I can see where she would wait a bit for that to heal. 

Right now, the consensus is that no Republican can win in 2012 (that is changing, though).  If that consensus is right, then it makes no sense for her to charge into 2012, especially if it takes only 6 months to actually prepare for the campaign.  She can study, travel some more, and improve without it appearing obviously ambitious a la Hillary or Michelle Obama, which I think is pretty safe.

Needless to say, I voted for the Chick.

Besides, Romney is ready for 2012.  If we are going to lose in 2012, let it be Romney.

Let me get one thing straight: nobody is senator over anybody. A senator represents, he doesn't govern: he sits in his chamber, and talks, and casts his vote - nothing more.

A mayor or governor, by contrast, is an executive. He draw up budgets. He makes appointments to managerial posts. He oversees day-to-day operation. Politically, he shapes and guides the passage of legislation. In emergencies, he organizes and commands the relief effort. That is the sort of experience that is relevant to the presidency, which the Constitution defines as the office of "chief executive".

A large state like Alaska, with its widely dispersed population, extreme climate, and natural resources, presents unique challenges to a governor, on both the political and the executive areas. Although its population is small, the challenges to an executive are great.

Obama, by contrast, had never run so much as a hot dog stand when he was elected to the office of chief executive. He was utterly inexperienced: and no, I don't count four years of running for president, occasionally interrupted by a "present" vote in the Senate, to be relevant experience.

Simply in terms of experience relevant to the office of president, Sarah Palin in 2008 was far better prepared than Barack Obama was - or, for that matter, than John McCain or Joe Biden. I'll go further: any governor, hell, any mayor of any town, anywhere in the country, is better prepared, in terms of relevant experience, to  become president than Obama was in 2008. Now, I'm not saying that being mayor of Dead Man's Fang, Nevada, is somehow sufficient qualification for the presidency: it's not. But I do say that that mayor is better qualified, in terms of experience, to serve as president than Obama was in 2008.

Now, I realize that some think Obama is some sort of super-genius. I see no evidence of that myself. Obama's appeal is in the fact that he is black - but not too black. If he were white, he would have been laughed out of the presidental race. If he were dark and "talked black", like, say, Jesse Jackson, the white power establishment in the Democratic Party would have seen him as too threatening. So, we got our black white man: a symbol, a cypher, an empty suit, and now we're paying for our folly.

Obama strikes me as being more like a Warren Harding: a handsome, personable man with strong ties to the media and a domineering, ambitious wife, who, thanks to a reaction against a deeply unpopular wartime president, is propelled into an office for which he is utterly unfit. And if the last six months are any indication, then he and his allies will have thoroughly wrecked the country well before November 2012.

Didn't polls indicate that about 13% of the support for the GOP ticket in November came from Palin (IIRC), which was a much higher vote tally than most VP candidates can bring to the ticket?

Do you think it's the case that that doesn't extrapolate to strong popularity among Republicans already, even though they had only a short window of insight into her policies during the campaign, plus her huge popularity among Alaskans?

(I guess I'm just asking for an opinion on whether she really isn't doing enough so far to ensure the support would be there for a run for president in 2012 or 2016, or whether just doing her current job well for now would translate into support for a presidential bid later).
