White House Doubles Down On Honduras

Major Garrett of FNC live Twittered (Tweeted?) today's White House briefing and has these two notes on Honduras.

First, the US is insisting that Zelaya is still President and must be returned to office.

Gibbs also tried to explain the US reacted so quickly to the Honduran situation compared to the protests in Iran because the US wanted to stave off charges we were behind Zelaya's removal.

Um, wasn't the reason Obama gave for not saying anything about Iran was to avoid charges of meddling and not linking the protesters to the US?

In Iran silence=not meddling. In Hondurans talking=not meddling. Um, okay.

The only consistency here is Obama taking the side of the authoritarian figures against the rule of law and those demanding their rights.

Meanwhile, Zelaya says he's heading back home.

Flanked by Latin American leaders who have vowed to help him regain power, Manuel Zelaya said late Monday that Organization of American States Secretary-General Jose Miguel Insulza had agreed to accompany him back to Honduras.

But the man named by Honduras' Congress as interim president, Roberto Micheletti, indicated Tuesday that Zelaya would risk arrest if he returns because "the courts of my country have issued arrest orders" against him.

Should be interesting to see how far Obama is willing to go to vindicate Zelaya's claims.

Arrest and execute. Problem solved!

I doubt Obamma has the balls to do anything about it other than lodge a strongly worded letter of protest.

normally i don't root for people to get killed.....who am i kidding, i am always pulling for it... i hope the hondurans show the Obama/Castro/Chavez alliance that no one gets to mess with their domestic affairs and shoots the president upon his return, or at least puts him on trial then executes him

the sad thing is that Honduras has always been a good ally of america, so now we are essentially fucking over the democratically elected officials, the supreme court, and the new president who is from the old presidents party, for a wanna be el jefe. I don't think the hondurans will forgive us any time soon.  I am still spellbound that Obama is taking such a hard line against the Hondurans who are true to their constitution and in favor of preventing a new caudillo.

We just created an new enemy in our hemishphere

I am really surprised that Zelaya is not taking a dirt nap after coming down with .45 caliber lead poisoning. Really, it's the best way to deal with someone who thinks that they are above the law. Pissing off Hugo + Fidel is simply a bonus.

I had my doubts about how Honduras would turn out when I was there 25 years ago. They seem to have found their way better than we have, in some respects.

a) Obama didn't check with anyone before he jumped up to defend a guy who was trying to set himslef up as a dictator,

b) Obama did check, and then went ahead and defended him anyway.

c) Obama did check, but since State is full of Castro moles, they gave him the dictator-wannabee's spin on things.

BO is all about form over substance.

He doesn't believe in democracy, voting rights, etc - he believes in the process as a dog and pony show.

Just like most dictators like to have show elections. A 98% "vote" ratifies the tyrant.

This is the common thread between Iran and Honduras. In Iran those damn demonstrators disturbed the orderly "democratic process". In Honduras those damn military guys followed their Constitution and disturbed the "democratic process".

We need to be very aggressive during the next few election cycles about vote fraud and the integrity of the vote. BO is very consistent and this shows us what he really thinks about the vote in a democratic republic.

72 at what point does alienating our allies, destroying democracies, backing authoritarian regimes in a post cold war world become so dangerous that it may kill some of us.

Yeah, I mean, there's that. There's also the complete absence of anything remotely resembling clear thinking on the economic front. There's pending back door legislation that could bankrupt ordinary middle class citizens (that cap-n-trade california housing code thing), and above all there's the fact that everybody - EVERYBODY - knows that this guy is lying out his ass, but a majority of people seem to think it's okay.

I mean, what's been dawning on me over the past couple of days is the fact that the President isn't just a lefty or a naif. The guy is actually out to hurt ME. Voter fraud is a big factor. The dems have known for decades that subverting the democratic process is much cleaner and easier if you manufacture votes. Hell, how many times have we seen a dem get elected with more votes than there were registered voters? Then the judges that you own can feel OK with declaring the fraud a winner, and the majority of the country says "Well, if the judges OK's it, I guess it was legit."

I think 0bama is all concerned because some people woke up and said enough is enough. Hugo was printing up the ballots, what could possibly go wrong? Hell, the ACORN crooks are going to be doing the counting for our census. They sure have a reputation for honesty, don't they?

Honest votes will ruin their plans.

85 When you're as narcissistic as Teh One laws don't mean as much as they do to the rest of us.  That, and the whole Marxist thing...

87 Its amazing how Obama is turning foreign opinion against us by his support for despots and dictators.  How can America support a man who promotes tyrants?

88 The vast majority of Obama voters don't even know this stuff is going on.  They have no interest, they do not ponder current events.  They voted for this fraud because they bought into his hype and it made them feel good.

Don't worry. By now, even Hoduras realizes that Obama isn't going to back up his (foreign policy) words with anything resembling consequences.

Nope, Woodrow F. Wilson is still worse by leaps and bounds. Until Obama starts locking up political prisoners (like WFW did among other amusements - see the Wilson chapter in "Liberal Fascism") we're not even in the same ballpark.

BTW, the "F" stands for 'effin.

Yes, but we survived Wilson.  Not sure we'll really survive Obama.  Not as a democracy (republic) anyway.

96 You know, I may be coming in to this story a bit late, but can anyone answer for me these two questions: (1) Does the Honduran constitution provide for removal of the president by impeachment instead of through military action such as was done here, and (2) if so, why wasn't that procedure followed here?

Yeah, he "meddles" so fucking well. Especially when he speaks up for brutal dictators in Iran and Honduras.  Gawd forbid he should be accused of supporting a coup.

Fuck, 2012 cannot come soon enough.
