Vid: Sanford's Presser

A few points:

1) He came pretty damn clean. In fact, he's being criticized by many for providing too many details. A guy on FoxNews said this showed poor political judgment. I don't know -- maximum candor may be the best political judgment and avoid the drip-drip-drip, and even if it's not, there's still something of value in maximum candor, anyway.

2) Shep Smith is a lying liberal weenie and people need to stop giving him ratings. All he could squawk about were Sanford's "lies, lies, lies," but, under the circumstances, Sanford told relatively few lies. Yes, he did obviously lie about his whereabouts to staff members, and he did, as he kinda-sorta admitted (while hedging disingenously), intend those staff members to propagate the lie on his behalf.

Still, given the situation, there were relatively few lies told. I mean-- this was a four day scandal, during which he himself was stone silent. The lie told -- maybe repeated a couple of times, but the same lie -- was that he was hiking. And he told that to staffers.

A lie is a lie is a lie, but Shep Smith seems eager to multiply them into the hundreds.

3) Sanford comes off badly when attempting, half-heartedly, to disclaim any attempt at lying or cover-up. He doesn't quite admit this and doesn't quite deny it. Better to just admit the obvious than engage in such a half-hearted attempt at obfuscating. He does this, I imagine, because he doesn't want to invite that comparison with Clinton, that is, the cover-up of the scandal. But in Clinton's case, it was actual a criminal cover-up, so it's already distinguishable, and there's no sense disputing the obvious.

Plus Sanford's thing went on for four days.

4) He spends a lot of time -- too much time for many commentators -- explaining his relationship with his dear, dear friend. I think commentators want the typical playbook call where he disowns the relationship entirely and writes the woman out of his life completely.

He doesn't do that. I think that's because he's in love with her and won't throw her under the bus.

That doesn't make it noble or anything. But the media seems to be expecting him to say "and it's all over now, and a huge mistake," etc., etc., and he doesn't appear nearly willing to say that. The complaint seems to be that Sanford's not saying the typical, Oprah-approved contrition stuff, and they're holding it against him that he's deviating from accepted Contrition Tour form.

I don't know. This seems a silly complaint. Hold it against him for the affair and etc., but not that he's deviating from the damage-control PR checklist.

5) Obviously his presidential chances are over, and likely his governorship, too, although he only has a year left in his term.

His Priorities: Girl Thursday writes:

In his press conference, he seemed more concerned about the mistress than his wife and sons.

I don't know if I'd go that far but that's what I was getting at, too. I don't say it makes it "better." But I think it's clear he's not writing this woman off. I'd say the chances of reconciliation with his wife under such circumstances are very low indeed.

I just mean it makes this different. This doesn't seem to be a fling. He seems in love with her. I don't argue that thinking he's in love makes an affair better, but it seems odd to criticize him according to the usual just-a-fling-type-affair standard, when this doesn't seem to be that.

Update: Brian in New Orleans writes:

His wife released a statement maybe an hour ago saying they had separated two weeks ago when she found out he was having an affair. She told him not to have any contact with her or her children and that's why she didn't know where he was.

I guess that sort of explains his Argentinian getaway. He felt "free," even though he really wasn't free at all.

Love Letters: Emails leaked to the press.

Embarrassing details.

You have a particular grace and calm that I adore. You have a level of sophistication that so fitting with your beauty. I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night’s light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...

Three and finally, while all the things above are all too true - at the same time we are in a hopelessly - or as you put it impossible - or how about combine and simply say hopelessly impossible situation of love. How in the world this lightening strike snuck up on us I am still not quite sure. As I have said to you before I certainly had a special feeling about you from the first time we met, but these feelings were contained and I genuinely enjoyed our special friendship and the comparing of all too many personal notes ...

Leaked by whom?

The story says these are from his personal email account.

I can think of only one person, off-hand, who would have likely access to his personal email account and have an interest in exposing the affair.

Of course, it could also be an aide I don't know about.

The fact that someone has these emails sure suggests that the same person tipped the AP to start inquiring as to Sanford's whereabouts.

I think this actually hurts Sanford all the more. I think a lot of people are more forgiving of Clinton-style use-'em-and-lose-'em predations than they are of this guy falling in love.

Plus, a lot of people don't think that a sober, older leader-type should lose his heart and therefore his head at all. It may strike many as extra-special flakey and foolish.

The State gets hold of the very personal, at times pained correspondence between Mark Sanford and a woman named Maria in Buenos Aires:

"I also suspect I feel a little vulnerable because this is ground I have never certainly never covered before - so if you have pearls of wisdom on how we figure all this out please let me know... In the meantime please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul," Sanford wrote last July.

45 Dear Governor -

You want to do this kind of stuff - do it on your own time as a private citizen.  When you parade around the talk show circuit as the face of the new direction of the conservative movement, you better darn well watch your step and walk the walk.  If you want to sniff around Argentina, you better not link your cause to mine.  You only demean me and the battle I am  fighting.  I don't like that one little bit, and frankly I can't afford the luxury right now of your little heart-wrenching romantic middle age crisis.

Signed,

46 I dunno if "dear friend" sounds like someone he's in love with. He probably just wants to figure out whether a reconciliation with his wife is possible before he takes definitive steps to break up with his mistress. Or: if he's telling the truth about spending some of that time in Argentina alone, he may not be really "with" the other woman. Could be that she is just a friend: the damage to his existing family relationships is probably at the top of his mind right now.

The press and his political opponents broke this story before he had a chance to figure out what was going on in his marriage.

So he's confused right now, and there won't be much he can tell the press until he and his wife figure it out themselves.

Looky here Sanford.  This is very easy to disappear.  Just stand before the microphone and say, "forgive me Lord for I have sinned."  Look upward with tears streaming down your cheeks and it will fool the rubes.

It's all about the con, and I have been a master at the art, having done this same trick when caught with hookers in my car, another hooker in a motel, and once while getting a blowjob behind a restaurant.  It's all about forgiveness and nookie.

Oh, my good lord. I want one. Republicans should pick this up and run with it. Unlimited immigration for hot latinas. Hell, buy 'em a ticket. That would ensure the 12 to 99 y.o. male vote for the next century. All of it.

But why stop there? Sponsor the Hot Chick Legalization and Polyamory Act of 2009. Hot Iranian girls can come too. They have to be screened by the Marines guarding the embassies, though, not the beta-male ambassadors.

I think it'd be a winner.

Being an Argentinian, the girl may not be a Latina, of Spanish descent. More likely of Italian or Scottish descent, maybe even German. Argentinians pride themselves as being the only "European" nation in South America. The non-Spanish (no-Latino) look down on people of Spanish descent and even more on Mestizo. I learned all this from an Argentinian girlfriend of Italian descent.

Well, Mr. Sanford, since we cannot vote for you for president any longer, we, too, would like to enjoy the curve of your girlfriend's hips, her tan-lines, and, perhaps we're being a bit selfish here, even her holding her two magnificent something-or-others.  Care to post a pic, Mr. Sanford?  Isn't that the least you can do for us?

102 This man is very much in the thralls of public sin — he’s perfectly clear and perfectly confused at one and the same time — showing decision and indecision with equal decisiveness. He cited “God’s law,” yet he refused to call it “adultery.” He apologized and asked forgiveness, but his statement was cold, clinical, and remorseless. He talked about working through it, but he left the distinct impression that he intended to work through the details of dissolving his marriage as he tried to repair his relationship with his children, as he kept the hot tamale on the side. It was clear that he wanted the best of both worlds — his personal family life (children) as well as his new lover — and that he cared nothing for his wife, except that she may be feeling some pain at the moment.

What I said above #84 ... I'm not sure but I think Argentinians of Italian descent may actually be the majority ethnic group. As I said, lots and lots of Scots too. Somehow the non-Spanish Argentinians convinced themselves that the Spanish don't really count as Europeans at least not the South American Spanish. And the elites really despise people of mixed i.e. mestizo blood. But there aren't many of those in Argentina because the Europeans totally wiped out the indigenous peoples of Argentina in the 18th century. I mean TOTALLY. There zippo, nada, zilch Indians in Argentina. Which come to think is probably why they can get away with saying they are the most truly European country in South America. Again this is all according to my Argentian/Italian ex-girlfriend.

Don’t be too hard on Waffles. His humor’s always been laced with nastiness, which is why he periodically finds himself in clusterfarks over “botched jokes.” It’s not that he hates Palin. He’s just a jerk.

The Bay State senator was telling a group of business and civic leaders in town at his invitation about the “bizarre’’ tale of how South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford had “disappeared for four days’’ and claimed to be hiking along the Appalachian Trail, but no one was really certain of his whereabouts.

“Too bad,’’ Kerry said, “if a governor had to go missing it couldn’t have been the governor of Alaska. You know, Sarah Palin.’’

The Democratic-centric crowd laughed.

I'd assume it was from his wife, egged on by her divorce lawyer, but I thought it was illegal to release other people's emails... so I don't know that an atty would advise someone to do that.

Scenario 1: Wife caught him, gave him an ultimatum with a deadline, he stalled (blaming the budget wrangling), then he tried to punt so she exposed it

Scenario 2: Political enemy got wind of this (either through blabbing wife or a staffer - I'm sure at least one staffer knew about the affair) and released

If it's #2, I hope the enemy was a Democrat. I'd hate to think that a Republican would do something like this when it's so important that the party be strong enough to oppose Obama.

Of course falling Republicans are likely to be replaced by a never-ending-stream of other ones, but like in any "war" eliminating the oppositions leadership is key.

If you're a Dem, eliminating Sanford is a prize, because he was leader of the Republican Governors, a real fiscal conservative, and a pain in Obama's ass.

Her statement said that she agreed to the separation as a way to strengthen the marriage...pfft!  If that is the case, then why not try to cover for him instead of the mysterious, "I don't know where he is and I am not worried".  She decided it was time he own up...she just helped it along.

That is why I knew there was some scandal here..the wife didn't know where he was?

141 It just kills me that he mentioned his wife and sons third as people he's hurt ... and he mentioned her first. If this is a love affair rather than a lust affair, I suppose it does show him in a slightly better public light. But to his family, it has to make it worse. If you're his wife or one of his sons, you've got to feel like you're coming in a distant second place right now.

And speaking of his sons ... I think one of the things that makes it worse when politicians and other public figures cheat (vs. the no-names in the general citizenry) is the stigma their families live with. In South Carolina, his sons are always going to be known as the kids whose dad flew to Argentina to be with his mistress on Father's Day ... then embarrassingly went on and on about it to the media. I don't know how old his sons are, but they'll probably have to deal with the effects of this at least throughout their elementary and high school years. Poor kids.

If it's #2, I hope the enemy was a Democrat. I'd hate to think that a Republican would do something like this when it's so important that the party be strong enough to oppose Obama.

I disagree.  Politically speaking, whoever leaked those emails did the Republicans a favor.  Think if this guy ran for Prez, won the nomination, and then his affair came to light.  You know the affair would have eventually come out...they always do.

166 >>Politically speaking, whoever leaked those emails did the Republicans a favor.

Not right now.

Look, right now he's a prominent governor who was actually standing up to Obama. In a couple of years, he wouldn't even be a governor, so I don't know how good his chances would be for President... but, in any event, it was premature to "vet" him. We don't even know if Obama will be vulnerable in 2012, so why worry about GOP candidates. What we do know, is that RIGHT NOW he's damaging the country (and the world).

Since a media outlet was sitting on the emails, I suppose the third possibility is that the "leak" really was just reporters blabbing to each other, with perhaps some coordination from the WH dirty tricks office.

The difference being, a Republican unknown will have the MSM horde devoted to uncovering anything that can be made to appear like a scandal, regardless of whether it actually happened or not (If it actually happened, that's a bonus for the MSM, but it's not a requirement).  For an example, see Palin, Sarah.

197 Hey ACE -

If Sarkosy could get rid of a wife and marry a mistress while being the president of France, why can't this guy get rid of a wife and kids and marry the Argentina babe?

If he's going to salvage something, he needs to marry the A/b quick after an even quicker divorce so it seems like LOVE is IN THE AIR.

Save him.
Shove the embarrassed ex in the background of the story.
If the Argentina babe is pretty - its a twofer for the photo ops and LOVE, which anyone will forgive.

Except maybe Newt.
Or every other republican that has divorced and remarried.

198 "I think this actually hurts Sanford all the more. I think a lot of people are more forgiving of Clinton-style use-'em-and-lose-'em predations than they are of this guy falling in love."

Well, I would disagree with that.  I think people more throw up their hands when somebody gets bitten this bad with the love bug, as there's nothing you can really do.

Whereas someone who just cats around as a way of life - that's not something that is easy to forgive.

If forgive is even the right word.  "Understand" may be a better word.

Or maybe it's a male vs female point of view thing?

As a female, if this were my guy, I'd figure he apparently couldn't help it, and I might as well give up and go find someone better.  Why stay with a guy who loves someone else more and is pining for someone else? But if he were having affairs as a recreational sport, that I would never forgive.  I'd kick him out then, too, of course, but with less sympathy.

In any case, Sanford has obviously gone off his rocker, jumped the shark, whatever you want to call it - but is not mentally stable, judging by his politically suicidal actions (as Krauthammer put it).

What a freakin' mess that would have been (deja vu John Edwards). What the hell could he have been thinking??

Billy Graham (among others) did not allow himself to be alone with a woman other than his wife. Not only did that protect him from false allegations, but it also protected him from that moment when everything is set in motion (and most people can pinpoint the moment). It's something our politicians might consider. Or maybe we should just get down with the French and Italians and celebrate studliness of men.

222 NO, he'll NEVER live this down. He ran off. He left the country...even, and informed no one on his staff. He made a vague lie to cover himself, for others to lie with, but the worst of it is they actually had to employ the services of state police to try and locate him. THey had to check cell-phone pings. They had to interview a federal officer/agent who had spotted him at the airport. They tracked a state car - not his usual , just one he "borrowed" for unofficial busines to the Atlanta airport.

Then he lied on top of lies. When his Argentina trip was cut short he tried lamely to get the curious press to simmer down with the oddest claim - that he spent his trip driving up and down the coast of Argentina. The is ONE coastal road and it is two miles long. Plus who goes to Argentina to go "driving". It didn't make any sense. If he just wanted to hit the road he could have seen the USA in his chevrolet,

His love is this weird narcissistic fantasy, arising out incontinent emotional unsteadiness; he incontinent in character and unrealistic.

He skipped out of his obligations and that should be enough to ruin him.

Gov. Sanford acted like an idiot.  He did a terribly destructive and irresponsible thing by engaging in the affair and by going off on a foreign jaunt with no way for his staff to reach him.  He's a chief executive of a state - not a dime-a-dozen state legislator.

That said, I can't find it in my heart to despise the guy.  He was a good financial conservative and seems to be a generally decent guy besides this enormous failing.  Ace's read of the situation strikes me as accurate.  Gov. Sanford fell in love with this woman and isn't ready to toss her away regardless of what it does to his job.  He should try to reconcile with his wife, but it sounds like that's not likely to happen.  I'm glad to see he didn't flush his family and career for the sake of a meaningless fling or a tryst with a prostitute.  The really sad thing is that his foolish trip and painful press conference are plunging his wife and kids into media Hell.  They don't deserve that.

His love is this weird narcissistic fantasy, arising out incontinent emotional unsteadiness; he incontinent in character and unrealistic.

He skipped out of his obligations and that should be enough to ruin him. Posted by: SarahW

229 Too bad women never cheat on men. I hope that reads sarcastic enough.

Anyway I liked the republicans better when they demanded these guys resign. I used to be able to defend these things by pointing out that our guys were purged while the dems promoted their scandle guys. I can't do that now because these fuckers won't do the right thing.

I'm talking to you Ensign, Vitter and Sanford.

230 This is one of the funniest comments I've read today (I would have said so on the site but, for some inexplicable reason, I'm not able to post to the site), well anyway, here's the comment:  "I'm jus ticked because it wasn't an American broad. What's wrong with these people???  Damned imports are ruining everything! ; )"

233 I have an idea for Sanford to save his political career. Switch parties!!!!!!!! Once you're a Democrat you can kill someone, be a member of the KKK, have your gay boyfriend run a prostitution ring out of your apartment, have sex with underage children, have a family member convicted of bribery, steal elections, befriend terrorists, commit massive campaign finance laws, steal and destroy national security memos, leak damaging national security secrets, commit perjury, take kickbacks, fire people investigating your party, ally yourselves with enemies of your country and never once pay any price for your misdeeds.

235 First:

I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night’s light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ...

Now Sanford's wife Jenny

Pretty hot woman considering her age and the fact she has had 4 sons.

What's the problem? Or should I say problems?

Yeah, you got it. You see this all the time, middle aged women go over the top with the diet. Don't do it ladies. The sexiest parts of a women are made up of fat.
As long as the waist is smaller than the hips and bust men will go for the "fat" every time. It may be a great burst to your ego to boast to your friends how you are a size 4 again but there aren't many guys who are going to appreciate the costs.

Does this excuse what Sanford did? No he's a cheating scumbag but that doesn't change reality here.

236 Below are excerpts of e-mails, obtained by The State newspaper in December, between Gov. Mark Sanford's personal e-mail account and Maria, a woman in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

One thing I would like to know here is how the hell this is legal?
I am fairly certain neither Sanford or "Maria" gave permission for these to be published. This is a personal e-mail account. How can it be legal for them to publish these? Has the wife already filed for divorce and these are evidence or something? Calling Gabriel Malor!

Posted by: Rocks at June 24, 2009 10:27 PM (3RHzM)

237 Rocks, Gabe said in another thread that he ws going to see Transformers.  So you probably won't get your answer till he returns.  But great questions.

238 While he might be forced to resign over concern that he can no longer execute his job as Governor under this scandal, that's not necessarily true.

Its not clear to me that Sanford can be impeached over this. . what crime did he commit?

Running away and not telling anyone where you are (or lying about it) is irresponsible, but as far as I know its not illegal.

Er, you don't have to be a felon to get impeached.  You just have to piss off enough folks to get thrown out.

241 Like I said above, I truly think he went a little, um, lot nutso over this chick. I do think people can fall in love having an affair. Sure, it's a dirty way to get into a relationship, but hey, people do feel the way they feel. I think he should resign, NOW. My ex screwed around on me, and I found pics of him in a shower doing 2 18 yr olds while he was out of town "working." I ran over him with my car. Unfortunately, he lived. I still get the feeling it wasn't just a bang for Marky Mark. Those corny ass e-mails don't sound like just trying to get poon. I feel sorry for EVERYONE involved in this mess, but I don't make a big deal out of him not being there for Father's day. Supposedly his wife told him to take a hike (for reals) and he wasn't supposed to be there. Plus, holidays like Mother's day and Father's day and all that crap annoy me.I had rather get attention on the other days not sanctioned by someone else's Hallmarkian ideas.

#48 I don't blame shep for this.  When a man cheats on his wife, its a natural reaction not to trust anything else they have to say.

Not that I'm excusing this man but relate that logic to JFK who didn't seem to suffer any loss of credibility over his womanising.  Though to be fair, only the media were in the know and they weren't telling.

I'm confused.

1.  I thought the news organizations decide during the "Slick Willy" thing that was something private and just between Mr. and Mrs.  I guess the Democratic propaganda ministry sent out new guidance to the media to feed to the sheeple and brain dead (52%ers).

2.  Why do I care what a second rate RINO does?  He has repeatedly gone against most conservative positions since becoming governor and this is a surprise

Posted by: Magic at June 25, 2009 11:14 AM (8X9tr)

251 One thing I've been wondering about is, the wife thru him out...of the Governor's mansion?  She can do that?  An unelected wife can throw the Governor out of a place that's set-up the communication equipment, staff, security, and whatever else is in there for the Governor?  That's it "hit the road Jack!"  Doesn't seam quite right...

Sanford went into way too much detail... on and on.  Who cares?  He just gave the libs more ammunition to yell about.  Maybe he's hoping to disappear back to Argentina while leaving a sullied legacy to his family.

A quick one minute presser would have been better than this pathetic display.
