| SC Governor Mark Sanford Was In....Argentina?I guess it's better than the speculation he was taking part in Nude Hiking Day. I'm a big fan of Sanford's but this is, um, a little strange.South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford was in Argentina during a dayslong unexplained absence, not hiking the Appalachian Trail as his staff told the public when state leaders raised questions about his whereabouts, the governor told a newspaper. The State reported that Sanford arrived Wednesday morning at Atlanta's international airport on a flight from Buenos Aires. ...When The State asked Sanford at the airport why his staff said he was on the Appalachian Trail, Sanford replied, "I don't know." Sanford later said "in fairness to his staff," he had told them he might go hiking on the Appalachian Trial. ...Sanford, a trim, 49-year-old former real estate investor and Air Force reservist, is typically drained at the end of a legislative session, former aides said. State Sen. Tom Davis, a Beaufort Republican and Sanford's former chief of staff, said he visited with Sanford last Wednesday and could tell the governor was ready for a break. "It's not unusual to take off and kind of be by himself," Davis said. "It's part of what makes him him."I get that people, even governors, need a break and the public doesn't have to know where they are 24/7/365 but you do have to leave a note and contact information with someone on your staff (or at least your wife) if you are a governor. Unexpected things happen that governors need to deal with all the time. This isn't the 19th century where government is a part time gig (unfortunately). For a guy who may have presidential aspirations, having the word out that the SC legislative session leaves you drained and in need of going off the grid for a week is not a good way to introduce yourself to the country. As I said, I really like Sanford and was looking forward to him running for the nomination in 2012 but he's going to need to be able to make this not seem as flakey as it does right now if he wants to make a go of it. Just follow a few Democrat politicians around during their down time and this should die down rather quickly.

In principle, there's nothing wrong with Sanford jetting off to
Argentina for a few days. And I would continue to defend Sanford
against media claims that he was "missing" or that he needs a
permission slip from the MSM to leave the state or have some "me time".
It does look as though there was severe communications breakdown between he and his staff. They just lost a lot of credibility by pushing the hiking story. Posted by: Robert_Paulson at June 24, 2009 09:06 AM (zjgCD) 4

He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.
Trying to make such a drive could frustrate a weekend visitor to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Avenida Costanera is the only coastal road, and it's less than two miles long. Once again, it's the attempted cover-ups that look worse than the initial act. Either he did something completely innocent and he, his wife and staff have handled it very, very poorly...or he did something weird and isn't getting away with it. My guess, based on absolutely no facts which I think means I should have an above the fold byline with the NY Times, is that it was plastic surgery of some type, probably an eye job. Does anyone remember waaaaay back when Clinton was first running for President and he took a few days off the campaign and came back looking "rested"? Yeah, I still think he had a wee bit of work done. Again, I'm completely talking out my ass here, but when this first bubbled up, that was my immediate assumption. Not by latitude, but by longitude it's pretty damn far. And jet lag also has to do with length of time cooped up on an airplane, not just time zone difference. Posted by: I have a Jalen Rose jersey at June 24, 2009 09:20 AM (4yrb2) 26

I like Mark Sanford. He's my governor. All this is very bizarre though. I have no problems with him getting away to decompress. But hell, what's with all the different stories and why would he not have told his wife or intimate staffers where he was in case of emergency? If a Democrat disappeared in Bangkok for a month, got caught with two underage prostitutes, a corpse and a kilo of crack, Democrats would leap to his defense, and back him to the death. Jet lag is an excuse used by pansy-ass delicate waifs to make up for their own brittleness and lack of toughness. I flew 14+ hours to South Korea and didn't suffer a lick of "jet lag." Jet lag is just "whip lash" (another supposedly chronic effect that sort of disappeared around 1999, odd how they don't sustain themselves) for the 2000s.

I don't under estimate this guy for a minute. He still owns the company he founded. He is a smart cookie as grand ma would say. What I do think is so funny is people's reactions to this, especially you conservatives/republicans. As an independent I find him way more appealing, why he dared to walk out of the "this is what conservatives are supposed to do" box and he's probably not going to say where he was and the dems probably have private investigators all over Argentina and still don't know where he was and what he did and it is going to drive them stark raving mad. This is funny and look, look at all this publicity. If he's lucky, he'll surive to another news cycle and everyone will know his name. And, some won't view this as the negative some are making it out to be, some will view it as an adult being an adult.

I really don't get why this is a story. The suggestion is no one except Sanford knew where he was. It's total BS. At least one staff member knew, I guarantee it. Why? Politicians, especially Governors don't pay there own bills, he was using a credit card. His wife knew too I am sure, she told the press she didn't know where but that doesn' mean she didn't know how to contact him if she needed too. The same goes for his staff.
If anything this whole bit shows how pathetic the MSM has become. 10 years ago there would have found the guy under a rock on the moon. Because there's a substantial difference between staffer and Governor. The options here are: 1) He's covering something up. His staff knew exactly what was going on, as did his wife, but for whatever reason we the public can't know what he did. 2) He did no exactly what he said he did and no more and was just insanely stupid about communicating.. Everyone makes mistakes, but if you want to end all the rampant speculation, he needs to better address the situation. Saying "I wanted to do something exotic," just ain't gonna cut it. If you wanna run for Prez, you need to be better at managing the media. 3) He's some sort of super genius and did this to get his name in the papers and more attention to the South Carolina situation. Any other reasons why this happened the way it did that I'm missing? Posted by: I have a Jalen Rose jersey at June 24, 2009 09:46 AM (4yrb2) 53
You guys have to lighten up. Watching the media get hysterical and stamp their feet about this is just too funny. I mean, was anyone on the plane with him? Did he really get off a plane from Argentina? Or, did they bring him to the airport and he pretended to get off the plane? And WS blogs were implying way more interesting stuff characterizing him as the only gov who rejected the stimulus and intimating God knows what happened to him at the hands of you know who. This is fun stuff, fun stuff. Instead of rejoicing that a Conservative Republican governor is playing the media, you are jumping on the donkey cart with them. Too funny, too too funny.

ALL republicans that can carry/garnish/aquire power are ALL winners, and if we don't start treating them ALL that way we are doomed to stay in the hinterlands till the end of this republic, which will be greatly hastened by that very fact. Look at the Dems - their most powerful menbers are some of the dumbest, most corrupt, vile, racist bastards & bitches on the planet, and they got to all that power and position because when they screwed up, the democrats actually gave them standing ovations! (For taking underage prostitutes out of the cuntry to bang them 'legally'!) People are flawed. Face it. Conservatives should stand up for their principles and certainly reject members of their coalition who do not uphold those principles in their official capacities. But when we willingly burn any successful republican/conservative at the stake whenever they make any moves that even SEEM 'unusual' EVEN WITHOUT ANY FACTS, as in the current case, we are just slicing off our own nuts. When we diss any republicans other than our own 'main man', we diminish our own brand, win a battle, lose the war. To hell with that, I say. Posted by: West at June 24, 2009 09:52 AM (1Rgee) 64

Much ado about nothing.
Argentina can be a dangerous place, so I don't blame him for keeping his itinerary secret. I'm guessing his wife probably knew where he was, but thought it was none of the media's fucking business. Don't believe the media bullshit. They attack people like him and Palin because they're conservatives. Notice they never go after RINO's like Mitt, Pawlenty, or Huckster (and Huckster actually had some real serious ethics problems), unless one of them wins the nomination, then they'll open fire with both barrels. Also, Sanford and Palin have been defending each other over their rejections of Porkulus money, and I'm sure anybody defending or defended by Palin will be media target #2 behind Palin herself. So don't drink the koolaid on this. I'm a big Palin supporter, but we don't know if she's even going to run in 2012, so let's not throw Sanford under the bus. He's a good guy. I haven't been to Argentina, but I know a lot of people who have. In my circle, it's a fairly popular place to go to cool off in the summer or do some bird hunting. Good food, nice people, no time zone change and all that. My sister and her family loved it.
It does sound like a long way to go for 4 days though. Posted by: stace at June 24, 2009 10:09 AM (g/wgk) 76

Is this how conservatives going to defeat Obama's Marxist policies? What are the ramifications of Sanford's walk about as compared to Cap and Trade and Healthcare? Posted by: Thomas Jackson at June 24, 2009 10:11 AM (B8gqF) 77

Speaking as someone who lived in Buenos Aires for the past year, I can tell you that either high-quality whoring or plastic surgery are both possibilities.
However, I tend to take the guy at his word. Argentina is a hella fun place to visit. In fact, it is probably the best place in the world to be a man: the chicas are stunning, world-class fly-fishing, unmatched wingshooting, you are encouraged to drive like a Formula One racer on the city streets, and every meal is steak, steak, steak. The only real downside to Argentina is that soccer is a national obsession, although, on the upside, they also love rugby. If Sanford says he went to Argentina to have a good time, I believe him. Notice they never go after RINO's like Mitt, Pawlenty, or Huckster The most 'conservatives' can say about Romney is there is something about him they don't trust. They have to ignore his accomplishments and mispresent his views. The most 'liberals' can say about Romney is that he took a vacation with his dog strapped to the roof of the car. They can't use their usual meme about a Republican's intelligence because he's smarter than anyone out there. Posted by: polynikes at June 24, 2009 10:17 AM (m2CN7) 84

Posted by: Tom in Korea at June 24, 2009 09:46 AM (9H4sW) -------------------------------------------------- I say fuck the Dems too, simply because they're not held to the same standards. It's easy to meet moral standards when they're not just low, but subterranean. That said, Sanford should have laid low right after the whole federal money blowup. You don't pick your nose in the kitchen while the diners are watching, no matter how much of a habit it is and how much you wash your hands afterwards. And to the dumbasses who are now claiming that it's an MSM conspiracy, Sanford admitted going to Argentina to a newspaper reporter, and told the reporter he considering going hiking, but at the last minute changed his mind because he wanted to "do something exotic". The MSM pumps this shit up, yes, but Sandford is a politician and should be more aware of how he is perceived politically. To ignore that is to show political incompetence. I see only four possibilities: 1. He was participating in this study: U.S. Government Funds $400,000 Study on Gay Sex in Argentina Bars. 2. He wanted to experience the David Carradine Two-Point, Split-Rope, Exploding Balls TechniqueTM, but didn't feel like truly flying halfway around the world to do it. 3. He just wanted to take a drive down a beautiful coastline, without his wife and kids, on Father's Day weekend, and thought nobody would notice or mind. Hey, Argentina's got a pretty coastline, right? Because the rabidly anti-Republican MSM will just let it slide, right? 4. He was face down in an opium den somewhere in the US for 4 days. Any one of thse options means he's too crazy, stupid, or inexperienced in the ways of the press to run for president as a Republican. Rightly or wrongly, that's just the way it is. Huh? We've been talking a great deal about Crap & Tax, as well as Obamacare, as have most other conservative blogs. Hey, I'm not tossing Sanford under any bus. I don't believe one word of the msm, so what their take on any of this is moot to me. They're serial liars. Yeah, I know any conservative pol is going to have a big, fat target on their back. I don't think the assumption that we're falling for their obvious "tear down the conservative guy" is correct. Just because the guy disappears and the reasons, thus far, are a bit murky has only led to us questioning the particulars. Nevertheless, EVERYTHING was ripe for a climate of Him Disappearing = Shit. Why did he do this? Someone Who Wants To Climb (Politically), would NOT do this, especially without an irrefutable defense!
Sorry. I now have doubts, and unless those doubts are thoroughly refuted (has his nemesis succeeded?), then he's, um, a wanker. We, The Conservatives, canNOT afford someone who is questionable! Can someone explain to me how thinking this is strange is drinking the kool-aid? Posted by: I have a Jalen Rose jersey Everything you know about this event is from Sanford's enemies. It's a totally made up controversy. Try using some common sense. "After being baptized, Jesus fasted for forty days and nights in the desert. During this time, the devil appeared to Jesus and tempted him to demonstrate his supernatural powers as proof of his divinity, each temptation being refused by Jesus with a quote of scripture. The Gospels state that having failed, the devil departed and angels came and brought nourishment to Jesus.*" After such a strange event, he of course never got the Republican nomination. Amen. *Plagerized from Wikipedia.com. I don't know where they plagerized it from. Is there a Godwin's Law for comparing someone to Jesus? Posted by: klrtz1 at June 24, 2009 11:43 AM (Q5asM) 109

Everything I've posted is readily available on the governor's website. Use a little deductive reasoning and common sense and you too can conjecture and opine with the rest of us. BTW, heard fox, (only fair and balanced when it comes to republicans or conservatives) interview the reporter who "heard things" and decided to "drive to Atlanta to meet the only flight coming in from Buenos Aires" to speak with what she described as a governor just as surprised to see her as she was to see him. When asked about what he did in Buenos Aires she exclaimed that they were working on that but sort of left the door open, in my mind at least, to more mystery and intrigue. Apparently, he is supposed to give a press conference this afternoon. The only reason I spoke out was because this entire thread so reminded me of the palin threads, here and elsewhere, on the day McCain announced her as his running mate. Everyone jumping to conclusions and trouncing her before she opened her mouth. I so despise when people aren't given the benefit of the doubt before people and the MSM and the blogsphere attempts whether intentionally or unintelntionally to nearly destroy them and their careers. I am a big Sarah Palin fan cause she surived that onslaught and is now more of a power player than she was before. I think everyone should give this guy a chance.

Via Twinks: "I like Mark Sanford. He's my governor. All this is very bizarre though. I have no problems with him getting away to decompress. But hell, what's with all the different stories and why would he not have told his wife or intimate staffers where he was in case of emergency?" ------- You're wondering why he didn't tell his wife? You know what they've got in Argentina? Some of the world's most beautiful women. Know what else they got? Legalized prostitution. Wait, I'm not saying it's true. He may have legitimate reasons for visiting Argentina. Granted, nothing comes to mind, but I suppose it's possible. And, yeah, he's done. Anyone with eyes on the presidency shouldn't pull something this stupid. And, what, he couldn't find a local pro? I know some Republicans took issue with the "Buy American" language in the Stimulus Package (for good reason), but c'mon, he's the Governor for chrissakes. Support the local economy... Presidential material? - not with the yoke of the puritains on him! The Dems can use that to leverage us against us again like the way they nullified Newt (no pun intended), Cuomo and Pataki with the anti-drug concerned christian conservative crowd, for smoking pot, which most normal people (again, no pun intended) have tried, did for a time, still do, or those that dont, but just want the stupid pot laws changed already...

Left my apology on the other thread. You guys were right, I was wrong. Wow, gave him the benefit of the doubt. It is so disheartening to see that no one seems to have character and integrity anymore. You are going to think I'm nuts but read about this initially on a WS site. If you read between their lines, you might think it was something else so maybe an affair was the lesser of two evils? Who knows. Unbelievable. Guess that's two, who's up for third?
