| Obama Press Conference Follow-upI managed to watch most of the presser online and just wanted to highlight a few outright lies. (1) When the President claims that cap and tax will be paid for only by polluters, implying that it will not have an impact on the economy, he fails Economics 101. Polluters, aka producers of goods and services, aren't going to magic up the money to pay for cap and trade out of nowhere. That money will be felt by consumers (and by every entity in the chain of commerce between the first cap-and-taxed company and the consumer). Prices will rise. The President's intimation that they won't is an outright lie. (2) Obama stated that healthcare is "the primary driver of federal deficits." This is an outright lie. In fact, in 2008, the federal government spent $600,121,000,000 on healthcare (Medicare, Medicaid). That's 20.4% of the $2.93 trillion spent last year. By contrast, the government spent $615,256,000,000--20.9%--on social security. The government spent $607,863,000,000--20.7%--on national defense. Perhaps the President meant that healthcare will become the primary driver of federal deficits if Congress passes his $1 trillion plan (although, the spendulus gives it stiff competition, counting interest payments). (3) As I expected, the President tried to claim that he had not reversed himself on Iran by adopting a firmer stance. It's true that he is trying to have it both ways--condemning violence for us, but hoping that Ahmadinejad will see his tepid response for what it is. As expected, Obama used his favorite phrase "As I said last week" to claim that he hasn't changed his stance in response to criticism. The fact is, his statement "last week" came on Saturday--long after most of the Western world had already condemned the Iranian government and long after Congress and many Americans had condemned the President for being chill with brutal dictatorship. (4) This last is just because I'm a little punchy. But Obama claimed once again to be a "former smoker." That must be a new euphemism for "one who smokes not every day and not around family" because that's what he said immediately after claiming to be a former smoker. Aside from Obama's lies, he engaged in typical political exagerations throughout. It was especially egregious when he feigned ignorance about the effect a public healthcare option would have on private insurers. The only other noteworthy moment I saw was during the last question when he talked about Iran failing to live up to "international norms of freedom of speech; freedom of expression." Helen Thomas, Harpy-emeritus of the White House Press Corp, screeched from off camera and off mic: "What about the Iraq photos?!?!" I assume that she's referring to photographs of dead troops and abuses at Abu Ghraib, which the Obama Administration (like Bush 43) has been loath to release. Oh yeah: His Arrogance Obama, First of His Name, Master of All He Surveys and Muncher of Fine Arugula snotted that "Congress can do what it's going to do" but that "I'm the President, and I'm going to run my office the way I see fit." He was responding to quoted criticism from John McCain. It was a reprise of his earlier sneering "I won" delivered, apparently, whenever McCain's or Bush 43's names come up.Comments1

lack of experience show through. The man is over his head.
It will be a joy to watch him lose re-election. Perhaps the
democrats should nominate Hillary, who at least will have a chance of

Obama stated that healthcare is "the primary driver of federal deficits."
He's right! Without quality healthcare the people don't live nearly as long and cost nearly as much. With GH (government healthcare) the proper guidelines can be set and BO's enemies can have their lives manipulated and crushed. Bingo, less costly. As a simple example Obama spent $800 million to be elected. With no living opposition such petty things as democratic elections can be foregone to the benefit of the peoples. Erin Burnett just interviewed the CEO of Aetna, a very erudite man who is black. (not a racist comment, rather a comment for those who think just becasue someone is the same color as the prez that they agree wtih him) It was a great interview filled with facts, well done, particularly under the "guidelines" she has to follow at CNBC. Bottom line, when asked straight out if he supported the prez's plan, He said no, (probably wanted to stand up and say HELL NO but he was too much of a gentleman. If the itnerview goes up I will post the link, worth watching.

I'm glad I didn't. I would have gotten as far as the "Iran is having a debate" part. The Iran issue is not a problem at all for this President, it is a minor distraction in fact, a temporary setback. Obamajad's plan is obvious. Sit back until the Mullah's get a handle on the "debaters" and then "LET" them finish developing Nukes. Remember, Iran and Israel are linked to peace in the Middle East and that link doesn't happen until the Mullah's have nukes hanging over the Israeli's heads. CAIRO – Iran expelled two British diplomats Tuesday after bitterly accusing Britain of meddling and spying. The government also dealt a fresh blow to the opposition by making clear it will not hold a new vote despite charges of fraud. State TV said hard-line students protested outside the British Embassy in Tehran, where they burned U.S., British and Israeli flags, pelted the building with tomatoes and chanted: "Down with Britain!" and "Down with USA!" Witnesses said about 100 people took part. Posted by: TheQuietMan at June 23, 2009 01:44 PM (1Jaio) 42

I propose that the Republicans in congress suggest to the President that he expand the policy of non-interference (as he has applied to Iran) to include domestic issues. In that interference in international affairs can be seen as contributing to the problem, I posit that his interference in domestic issues is having the same effect, but magnified since he is actually here...in this country...another problem that should be addressed. What kind of talk is that?, look, why did she fall flat on her back the moment you called on her? Gibbs: The Shrieking Harpy prefers keepin' on her back! Remarkable reporter, id'nit, squire? Such tradition! Mr. Tapper: Look, I took the liberty of examining that Harpy when I got it home, and I discovered the only reason that she had been sitting on her perch her cage in the White House press room was that she had been NAILED there. (pause) Gibbs: Well, o'course it was nailed there! If I hadn't nailed that Harpy down, she would have nuzzled up to those bars, melted 'em apart with her voice, howled about something incomprehesnsilbe about Dick Cheney, and …… VOOM! Feeweeweewee! I am getting the feeling that it is dawning on people that this guy, Obama, is a dipshit. That he is a self absorbed, narcissist with no real plan. Half ass plans and proposals are not plans... What it really boils down to is this. When your back is up to the wall and you are on the verge of being killed, do you want emotional rookie help or do you want a proven and ice cold response. Obama can't run and dodge. It's put up or shut up time from a teacher who's only real asset is his ability to bullshit his way through life. It ain't about you O. It's about your country. going to work, without a yearly subsidy line-item in the budget.
(i.e., "It's not costing the taxpayers a dime! It's competing under
the same marketplace conditions as the for-profit companies!")
Basically, it's going to be a modified version of the Late 90's Dotcom Business Plan: 1. Get a truckload of startup money (from the taxpayers) 2. Offer services for free or almost free, even though you'll be losing money 3. ??? 4. (non-)Profit! Of course, for the health care plan we'll need to add an additional step every few years: 5. It's too big to fail, so we need a bailout. Posted by: Brendan at June 23, 2009 02:58 PM (saRwI) 126

Anarcho-primitivism is an anarchist critique of the origins and progress of civilization. According to anarcho-primitivism, the shift from hunter-gatherer to agricultural subsistence gave rise to social stratification, coercion, and alienation. Hehehehe. Agriculture invented coercion. Ecofeminism argues that there is a connection between women and nature
that comes from their shared history of oppression by a patriarchal
society:
Clearly ignoring history like So Elizabeth the 1st is not a good feminist because of the damage she authorized to the American Continent. pillager! Indira Gandhi is a bad feminist because she advocated increasing science and technology and launching India's nuke program; and the transition to NON organic farming. A pox on her house for the blight she represents to feminism. Margaret Thatcher clearly part of the "patriarchy" a sell out. A token elevated because of her subservience to the "patriarchy" right ecofeminists? Marie Curie whose work greatly contributed to what would eventually become nuclear power. EVIL EVIL EVIL not fit to be called a woman. Admiral Grace Hopper. Invented COBOL (I know: not even close to my favorite either but it was BIG at the time) giving large enterprise the efficiency to drastically increase output: deserved the fate of Joan of Arc right? And on and on and on... They sicken me for how they devalue the real contribution of women in history; reducing a gender to victims, rather than honoring their hero's. They recruit for their movement by attempting some sort of victim identification and exploiting a negative psychology instead of empowering women to seek their own individuality and potential. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 23, 2009 03:35 PM (0q2P7) 150

I think the budgets after 2008 are proposed budgets. Do note the $47,379,000,000 in VA Medical Care spending that Gabriel left out of his calculations. Gabriel wrote: Obama stated that healthcare is 'the primary driver of federal deficits." This is an outright lie. In fact... I think he needs to recalculate his numbers figuring in the $47 billion the VA spent on medical care. Posted by: poon at June 23, 2009 04:04 PM (i31Zq) 152
145 Please tell me you weren't referring to health benefits for our
veterans as socialized medicine. That health care HAS BEEN EARNED.
Sorry teej a spade is still a spade, whether the benefit was earned or not. (I happen to be a veteran myself) socialistic benefits for those in military service date back to the Greeks, and is generally seen as an obligation of the people incurred from the sacrifice of the veterans which could never be appropriately compensated. The point was that the Government supplied benefits were and are tied to a real obligation of the people to take care of those who have sacrificed for them, which is a valid expectation. In this case, socialized indicates that the healthcare is completely government run, consistent with the definition of socialism. The government could elect to simply pay for the medical care of said veterans, but they elect to completely run the entire process. The excuse of cost control must come up, but aside from eliminating a miniscule profit margin that insurance companies make how do they control costs? No malpractice allowed, you get the care we say you get, limmited number of facilities and personnell; exactly what you expect from government run medical care. It is the prototype for a larger scale role out. If I don't like how the VA treats me I can always go someplace else, and use my own insurance. Once Obama care becomes reality, the affordability of someplace else will be nonexistent, kind of like private schools now. The danger is the assigning of positive rights such that the whole of hummanity thinks it is owed something simply because their mom decided not to abort them and they made it to breath 1 or 5 or 20 or wherever the line is drawn these days. Instead of the traditional model of service to the people incorporates an obligation of the people to care for those who served: which inherently limmited the scope of socialistic expansion; where both parties voluntarily enter the agreement and both parties give, and is never intended to supplant private enterprise, It becomes, entitlements, dependence, and control under the true socialists model. Someone's gulping the AMA kool aid! If you would take the trouble to understandi Obama's proposals, he always begins with an assertion that if you like your current plan, you can keep it. If you don't like paying for the uninsured that get treatment at the emergency room then you must like any plan that makes it affordable for everyone to have insurance. #152 Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 23, 2009 04:07 PM (0q2P7) - Well that was a nice long paragraph and well spoken, etc. But, the fact remains that those benefits were earned. That veteran IS entitled to it. I wasn't forced to pay for someone's health care who isn't truly "entitled" to it. THAT is socialized medicine.

If you would take the trouble to understandi Obama's proposals, he always begins with an assertion that if you like your current plan, you can keep it. Oh, OK. You mean, after the government comes in with its infinitely deep pockets (courtesy of the taxpayers it robs at gunpoint) and uses the hammer of legislation and regulation to make it literally impossible for private insurers to operate at a profit (and seizes those profits if they somehow manage), you mean I get to keep my private insurance plan if that company decides that it doesn't need profits any more? Why, you're just the kind of naive, drooling imbecile Obama's pinning his hopes on! Posted by: VJay at June 23, 2009 04:44 PM (gQ+XA) 157

Someone's gulping the AMA kool aid! No I just understand a little about economics is all. It goes like this. 1 Establish govt insurance option partially funded by tax payers, partially funded by insured to help the uninsured (humanitarian) 2 Increase tax payer input year after year to "control cost" to low income earners (humanitarian) 3 Private insurance cannot compete with the govt insurance whom gets a huge amount of money outside of premiums payed by members. 4 Cost considerations force employers to switch to govt insurance. (Or else pass it on to their customers and become non competitive) 5 A vast majority of America gets on the govt program. 6 The govt increasingly uses legislative control until medical care is a government institution. With only the upper class able to afford private care. I actually read history, and this mirrors, almost to an exact, the government takeover of education, which is soooo efficient, and provides such a high quality product. And is really effective at keeping costs down. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 23, 2009 04:46 PM (0q2P7) 158
THAT is socialized medicine.
Teej at 155 I disagree with what you think the definition of socialized is. Whether medicine is payed for by the government (read taxpayers), or payed for by the individual, or some combination thereof, (or is due as an entitlement for services rendered) a system of medical care run and administered by the government is socialized medicine. I wouldn't like it any more if we still had to pay our way like we do now with 100% of the costs being born by the actual patients for the care they receive. Government controlled medical care is by definition socialized medicine, and would, at a very minimum lead to a complete stagnation of medical advances, and as it is treated more like an entitlement rather than a service you pay for, you find government rationing, high costs, long waits, etc. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 23, 2009 04:58 PM (0q2P7) 159
Gabriel wrote:Obama stated that healthcare is 'the primary driver of federal deficits." This is an outright lie. In fact...
I think he needs to recalculate his numbers figuring in the $47 billion the VA spent on medical care. Posted by: poon at June 23, 2009 04:04 PM (i31Zq) "Primary driver" does not merely mean largest budget item among many. It means "predominant, comprising the better part of" the entire budget. It is hyperbole. The military medical spending to which you refer has nothing to do with the proposed Obama health care program anyway. He is referring to changes in medicare, medicaid, and above all private insurance programs. Posted by: Wm T Sherman at June 23, 2009 05:22 PM (w41GQ) 160

#148 Posted by: Sort-of-Mad Max at June 23, 2009 03:35 PM ha ha ha I know what yer talkin' about! And to think that area you mention south and west of Hyde Park was a nice area once upon a time long ago. I live in a suburb southwest of Chicago and a large percentage are Irish-Catholic (incl. yours truly) and either refugees or the children of refugees from what were once nice southside neighborhoods. I don't know whether my neighbors are Dems or Repubs because we don't talk politics even at block parties which is sort of a blessing. I suspect many voted Dem but their heart isn't in it. Being a white ethnic especially Irish Catholic in these parts practically means you start out voting Dem because it's bred into you and part of your politcal DNA. That's too bad and they just have to get over it and to be fair many have. But problem is the Repubs in this state are just as corrupt as the Dems only more stupid if you can believe that. The Repubs can't take two steps without tripping over their dicks and their dicks are small ones too. It's a genuinely despairing situation. Posted by: de-lurker at June 23, 2009 07:38 PM (PDySa) 162

The report that the EPA wanted to be "disappeared." Frankly, I think the comments about EPA being painted as the bad guy should AGW be discredited are spot on. EPA has set itself up as a future “village idiot,” which will help the politicians to no end should they need to unwind the politics of AGW if facts on the ground create "AGW quicksand.”Posted by: Neo at June 25, 2009 10:18 PM (5d1ix) 168
