Confirmed? General Strike in Iran Called for Tomorrow?
Claim: Anonymous Sources Say Rafsanjani, Other Clerics Eye Replacing Supreme Leader Khameini With Governing Council?

Via Twitter.

They've been discussing this possibility on FoxNews. One pundit stated that general strikes were critical to the success of the Iranian Revolution of 1979, and that such a strike would definitely have an impact. Particularly if those working in the oil sector join the strike.

The Revolutionary Guard is threatening to crush further demonstrations, meanwhile.

Anyone who doesn't show up for work is fired, the regime barks.

And an unconfirmed tidbit:

According to unconfirmed reports in Balatarin [Farsi] , Gen. Ali Fazli, the head of revolutionary guards in Tehran, has been arrested after refusing to execute Khamenei’s order of using force against demonstrators in Tehran. He is a war veteran who lost an eye during the Iran-Iraq war.

The turning point in an uprising comes when many the regime relies upon begin fence-sitting, waiting for a victor to emerge. This particular report may not be true, and other similar reports may not be true, but, assuming some of them are true, it looks like more and more power-players are deciding it's unclear who will prevail in this. Which is deadly for the regime, of course, because 80% of their power derives from the belief that they are powerful and are in a position to punish those who defy them.

The Last Piece of the Puzzle? ParanoidGirlInSeattle wrote in the comments earlier that Iranian friends of hers doubted this counter-revolution would succeed, because general protests, especially when made up mostly of students, don't change anything. The situation would turn serious, she said (based on her friends' understanding) when businesses and workers took up the cause.

She now writes:

And I've posted this two or three times in various comments threads about Iran as a woman I know from Iran told me last week this is what was needed, the support of the business owners and the infrastructure people (transportation, garbage etc.), it's how what is going on now continues to gain momentum there. It's their real hope for change at this point.

Full-On Coup? A huge rumor picked up by Patterico, found in Al Arabiya.

Religious leaders are considering an alternative to the supreme leader structure after at least 13 people were killed in the latest unrest to shake Tehran and family members of former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, were arrested amid calls by former President Mohammad Khatami for the release of all protesters.

Iran's religious clerics in Qom and members of the Assembly of Experts, headed by Ayatollah Rafsanjani, are mulling the formation of an alternative collective leadership to replace that of the supreme leader, sources in Qom told Al Arabiya on condition of anonymity.

It gets even more interesting. Al-Sistani of Iraq is said to have had a representative present at the meeting where this was discussed. I'll leave that quote at Patterico, which explains why al-Sistani might be invited.

Yes, Al-Sistani. The guy who has frustrated us by seeming to be on the side of the good guys a lot of the time in Iraq, and yet would not put himself too much out on a ledge for them. (I think he constantly vetoed any plan to outlaw al-Sadr, for example, but my memory is fuzzy.)

It would be interesting -- and politically useful to supporters of the war in Iraq -- if Bush's noble and bloody experiment in Iraq turns out to contain the chickens which will go home to roost in Iran.

That was always pretty much Bush's real plan in Iraq -- not just that we'd win a war in a single country, but that a successful, prosperous, free Iraq would have positive spillover effects throughout the Muslim world.

Obviously I'm getting far ahead of the information here, so I'll stop.

Thanks to someone.

1 I assume general strike basicly means "nobody goes to work".  Can someone enlighten me if that's not the case?

Probably but one thing it means for sure is direct defiance of the regime. They've pretty much made it clear that was not something they were going to allow. There were reports of threats being made against business owners over the weekend to show up at work or suffer the consequences.

It's an economy on the edge as it is and this would definitely be a step up by and a test for the opposition. Will non-student types join? If so, it's really on.

general strike has been called for in Iran.

All people don't goto work.  All people do bank run, start reporting fake protests, attacks.  All people start removing street id signs.

In general, not just a group not going to work.  Everyone starts to muck with the govt.  Stop paying all bills. etc.

Like in 1979.

Of course, gov't has said all who do not show up for work are fired.

Oh and are sentenced to Death.  (oh, i made up that last line)

10 While I support the concept of perhaps calling for the idea a general strike, on the other hand, not calling for a strike would send a message of a willingness to find a peaceful resolution to Iran's internal debate.

it looks like more and more power-players are deciding it's unclear who will prevail in this.

Exactly. Last week the business owners, the wealthy men who aren't involved in politics and yet still have influence in the country, were sure the regime would prevail, but that isn't obvious now so there's more willing to risk siding with the revolutionaries.

Another component, as of the vote and right after there was still the idea that Mousavi was the same difference as dinner jacket as both were selected by the ruling council. But, now even if that were true it no longer is, if Mousavi prevails he'll have a mandate for change. If that makes sense.

Yes, a general strike means roughly that all unions put all their workers in all workplaces on full strike. (And obviously they might attract non-union sympathisers too.) It's the nuclear bomb of industrial action, the furthest the unions can take things short of actual sabotage and violence (and not always short of them). If the Iranian opposition can manage anything close to a full general strike then the regime has a problem. General strikes helped to bring down the Shah, apparently.

I hit post too early:

The fact that the protests have been going on as long as they have is important.  A good hard-fisted crackdown early would have shown that the regime was united and resolved.  All of this time and these threats of a crackdown show weakness and disunity in the regime, and perhaps that they are not confident in their security forces giving the protestors 'a whiff of grape'.  If the 'special guards' are wavering, or perhaps not completely trustworthy, the regime has problems.

Keep an eye on who joins in the protests.  As noted, if it is just students it is localized and can be crushed.  Over-educated malcontents, the lot of 'em.  If it is businessmen, laborers, and old ladies, then you have people who have a stake in stability challenging stability.  That is dangerous for a regime - they think the risk of instability, of losing everything they have, is better than leaving you and your stability in power.

Also, keep an eye on the army.  No army historically has liked 'special guards' and their claims on the defense budget and on honors.  If the army opens an armory to the protestors than the game is really on.

62 As we learned in Iraq, you don't have to be perfect in messy international conflicts. You just have to be better than the other guy. So Bush f'ing up one thing or another wasn't the story because the other side f'd up worse (and when the other side is totalitarian AND religious fundamentalist it's a virtual certainty that they'll mess up worse). In Iran, the government perpetrated electoral fraud and was too lazy to make it plausible (the guy responsible is currently looking for his balls in the Tehran sewer system). So maybe O was slow (it seems to me he was) but does it matter with any significance? I'd say no - Iran's incredible stupidity (on par with, say, in the middle of an economic crisis announce a long range budget that 'features' trillion dollar deficits more often than not) on the election is the single spark for the crisis and the level of Iranian government stupidity to follow will decide where it ends.

67 Yes, Sistani's apparently the heaviest-hitting living Shiite ayatollah anywhere. (He's also a Persian from Iran.) Supposedly he's one of the grand ayatollahs who have never supported Khomeini's position that Shiism calls for a theocratic government. (He's not very tolerant of homosexuality, though, to say the least.)

I read somewhere that the regime might end up sending the IRGC into Qom to crack down on the Guardian Council. That would be mondo bizarro: not completely unlike the Pope invading Rome.

Lets see, who could have seen this coming, and nearly exactly how it happened?

"These are the stirrings of Middle East democracy, and they carry the promise of greater things to come," he predicted.

And in Iran, "the demand for democracy is strong and broad," Bush said, pointing to the welcome home received by Nobel Prize winner Shirin Ibadi.

Iran's current regime, Bush noted, "must heed the democratic demands of the Iranian people or lose its last claim to legitimacy."

George Bush Nov. 6, 2003, discussing democracy and freedom in Iraq and the Middle East.

Like Ronald Reagan within a year of leaving office great fruits are ready to be harvested -- will they be allowed to die on the vine to satisfy Obama's stubborn adherence to his one world philosophy?   Lets hope we end up the right side of history and human rights on this one like we did in 1989.

Re: democracy spilling over to other parts of the muslim world.

I thought that was Bush's point all along. My own theory about why Obambi won't stick up for the protestors is that he hates Bush so much (and can't admit that Bush was right) that he doesn't want to see Iran go democratic.  It would be sort of cutting off one's nose to spite one's face to condemn the Iranian people to death and tyranny just so you could say "Bush was wrong," but as somebody pointed out, that looks just like Andrew Sullivan is doing. Is bambi as looney as sullivan? or as petty?

I know a number of Persians, and their opinion is that if Bush wanted to start a war to promote democracy in the middle east, Iran was a better place to do it. The average Iranian is very pro-American - my friends say practically everyone dreams of getting to the U.S. even if they're just driving a cab.
