Obama: A Man Tyrants Can Do Business With

Andy McCarthy pokes around in Obama's psychology, and comes out with an unflattering portrait.

The key to understanding Obama, on Iran as on other matters, is that he is a power-politician of the hard Left : He is steeped in Leftist ideology, fueled in anger and resentment over what he chooses to see in America's history, but a "pragmatist" in the sense that where ideology and power collide (as they are apt to do when your ideology becomes less popular the more people understand it), Obama will always give ground on ideology (as little as circumstances allow) in order to maintain his grip on power.

It would have been political suicide to issue a statement supportive of the mullahs, so Obama's instinct was to do the next best thing: to say nothing supportive of the freedom fighters. As this position became increasingly untenable politically, and as Democrats became nervous that his silence would become a winning political round for Republicans, he was moved grudgingly to burble a mild censure of the mullah's "unjust" repression — on the order of describing a maiming as a regrettable "assault," though enough for the Obamedia to give him cover. But expect him to remain restrained and to continue grossly understating the Iranian regime's deadly response. That will change only if, unexpectedly, it appears that the freedom-fighters may win, at which point he'll scoot over to the right side of history and take all conceivable credit.

I think Victor had this right on Saturday: "Obama is almost more at ease with virulent anti-Westerners, whose grievances Obama has long studied (and perhaps in large part entertained)," (though I'd have omitted the "almost"). Mark Steyn made the same point in a post last week (about a Robert Kagan column that Pete Wehner also discussed).

It's a mistake to perceive this as "weakness" in Obama. It would have been weakness for him to flit over to the freedom fighters' side the minute it seemed politically expedient. He hasn't done that, and he won't. Obama has a preferred outcome here, one that is more in line with his worldview, and it is not victory for the freedom fighters. He is hanging as tough as political pragmatism allows, and by doing so he is making his preferred outcome more likely. That's not weakness, it's strength — and strength of the sort that ought to frighten us.

He did something very similar when Russia invaded Georgia, burbling some nonsense about both sides needing to stop the violence. When a cautious statement of support for a democratic country would have actually gained him a bit politically. As well as, you know, being the right thing to do.

Only when his friendly-to-invaders statement was criticized by McCain did he manage to say something nice about freedom and sovereignty and so forth.

Thanks to DrewM.

Michael Barrone on Obama: Dodge Facts, Skip the Details, Govern Chicago-Style: Sounds about right. Here's the bit about dodging facts:

First, Obama likes to execute long-range strategies but suffers from cognitive dissonance when new facts render them inappropriate. His 2008 campaign was a largely flawless execution of a smart strategy, but he was flummoxed momentarily when the Russians invaded Georgia and when John McCain picked Sarah Palin as his running mate. On domestic policy, he has been executing his long-range strategy of vastly expanding government, but may be encountering problems as voters show unease at huge increases on spending.
His long-range strategy of propitiating America’s enemies has been undercut by North Korea’s missile launches and demonstrations in Iran against the mullah regime’s apparent election fraud. His assumption that friendly words could melt the hearts of Kim Jong Il and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have been refuted by events. He limits himself to expressing “deep concern” about the election in the almost surely vain hope of persuading the mullahs to abandon their drive for nuclear weapons, while he misses his chance to encourage the one result — regime change — that could protect us and our allies from Iranian attack.

Well, I for one am not sure Obama would rather have a free Iran. It ruins his "Obama saves the world" Plan. And, if he does prefer an free Iran - would it kill him to say so? Just so we will know for sure what the heck he is thinking?

Its a strength to be willing to side with those who hate everything the US stands for as opposed to supporting those who wish increased freedom and liberty?

What is clear is Obama would be no dofferent from the mullahs if he could exercise this power.

His ineptness, ideology, arrogance, and incompetence are on display once again when even the dhimmicrats can sense what is the right thing to do before Obama can act.

Oh for the days when we could look forward to the competence of Carter, the honesty of Clinton, the charm of Nixon, and the clear thinking of Wilson rather than deal with this chimp community organizer.

The left especially, but also the right, have chosen since before the election to ignore the facts of Obama's associations and to somehow conclude that despite years of very close relationships with the likes of Ayers, Rev. Wright, Kalidi, Davis and several other radicals, that Obama himself had somehow managed to remain uneffected by these, his mentors.

I wonder whether the picture is becoming clearer now?

There's a quote from Jimmah Carter to the effect that he prefers to deal with dictators, because they don't have to answer to the masses. Which, on its face, is true -- they're easier to get an agreement out of, because they don't have to consult with anyone. Unfortunately, their agreements are meaningless, as their primary goals are their own power and aggrandizement.

I don't know about Andy's statement. Just as everyone assumed Bush was a dumbass( or was he an evil genius, I guess it depends on the day), it seems to me that the default assumption is that Obama is a calculating genius.

My take,he's like every other liberal who dreams big but refuses to think things through, and when confronted with the reality he'd rather plug his ear, close his eyes and shout at the top of his lungs to make sure he can't hear anything else.

Rather than being an intellectual juggernaut, he's a political naif who's stumbling along, learning on the job when it's time to lead.

29 I think that one reason that Obama fails to condemn sheer evil when he sees, as in Iran, North Korea, and the Russian invasion of Georgia, is that Obama does not see himself as the protester seeking liberty but rather as the thug beating the protester down, or more specifically, as the beaurocrat who orders the thug to beat the protester down. Bolton was on Beck this morning and described Obama as a narcissist. Obama thinks that in any rational world, his obvious superiority would be so apparent that any protesters against him would necessarily be irrational and thus would need to be beaten down. He can clearly see that a superior being, such as himself, Kim Jong Il, and Former President Putin, may encounter resistance from the ordinary man which can not be allowed to prevent the coming uptoia. If a few eggs get broken, there is still alway the hope that they will change into an omlette.

Obama believes by being silent he encourages freedom. By not condemning the violent acts of dictators he enhances freedom. Obama hates freedom, he hates democracy. He is the bastard of communit parents, raised by communists, and has always associated with Marxists.

37 It is more than rare that evil presents itself nakedly to the eyes of men. No, evil will always seek to hide itself, be it under the cover of darkness, in a lie or behind a wall of silence. Always evil hides. It does so because it knows itself to be what it is: evil. It knows that if its nature were revealed all would recoil from it and it would have no power.

The value of the American Presidency in international affairs derives in no small measure from its power to adumbrate evil deeds in shadow, and so rob them of the tacit legitimacy that silence confers. Mr. Obama’s initial silence followed by a muted “Tut, tut, my good man!” speaks to, at best his own moral ambiguity, or more frankly, to his own predisposition to befriend the darkness.

First, Obama likes to execute long-range strategies but suffers from cognitive dissonance when new facts render them inappropriate

Obama's a proponent of Alinsky, the concept of the OODA Loop is not in his psyche. I've noticed several times that without a planned and scripted policy scheme, he cannot function well. He comes unglued when sudden events render his plan unusable or obsolete. That's why these foreign events like Iran and North Korea are "distractions"

Lowry's response is pretty much why I stopped reading the National Review Online. It's like a whole lot of people - including most on the National Review - simply can't see what is in front of their eyes, because they cannot fathom that we could have possibly elected someone who is this radical, and who really doesn't see freedom the way we do, or care about it.

I wouldn't have fathomed it either, until we actually elected it. So I just wait for more people to get the gauze away from their eyes. People are basing their analyses of Obama on premises that are flatly false. They are projecting their own principles onto Obama, as if he holds them, too. However, he does not. He is unlike any president we have ever had.

As a result, it amuses me no end to see people on National Review and elsewhere - reasonable, thoughtful, intelligent people - approaching Obama as if he, too, were reasonable and thoughtful, and most importantly, as if he were as American in thought as they are.

> First, Obama likes to execute long-range strategies but suffers from cognitive dissonance when new facts render them inappropriate.

Excellent observation. And it shows how to fight him.

First, you have to oppose every policy you don't like. Opposition confuses him.

Second, you have to keep fighting. Since Obama is all into the long term stuff, short-term setbacks won't stop him. If you think you blocked something (say health-care nationalization, for example) in the Senate don't think that fight is over. He won't stop. If you've moved on to the next fight, he wins the old ones.

The second point may make it seem like it's impossible to stop him but you have to remember the first point. He doesn't repond well to opposition. So the more he's opposed the less he accomplishes. In other words, it's easier to fight him on 20 issues than it is fight him on 2 or 3.

Wrong. Well, the frightening part is true, but the "strength" attribution isn't.

In this case Obama would be riding on the coattails of history - IOW creating (if you can call actual neglect "creating") a policy subsequent to events rather than driving events via policy. Obama is the malignant witness to a crime. Rather than protect the little old lady in front of him from a mugging, jump ahead to become a tougher target, or even yell at her to not go down the alley any further, Obama would realize the most likely inevitability of events and try to convince the muggers not to attack him.

Some would call that cowardice. It hardly suffices as strength.

#23, Rob Crawford, it's a good thing I decided to read all the comments before jumping in with my 2 Rial. I also remember that quote from Jimmy Carter, and I think that it explains everything reasonable people might wonder about the left and their preference for buddying up to tyrants. Democracy is a messy process, and agreements you reach this year might not stand after the election. No way to build up any momentum. The major problem with this approach, from the viewpoint of the Carters and Obamas is that any agreement you reach with tyrants will not stand either, as witness the way that Jimmy put an end to North Korea's quest for nuclear weaponry. Lowry is wasting his time if he basis his points on Hussein's milk of human kindness. He thought it would be simpler getting an agreement with the dinner jacket, and the possibility of revolution getting in the way would unsettle all his plans. He was quite mistaken in believing that his charm would persuade Iran to give up its quest for a nuclear edge. All he could accomplish, even assuming that they would sit down and talk with him without resistance and insults would be to lead them to hide their nuclear progress. If he hasn't answered for himself the questions, "What do I do if North Korea nukes Hawaii?" or "What do I do if Iran obliterates Israel?", and if Iran and North Korea don't believe deep down that the answer is "Turn those suckers into radioactive glass, before you take another breath!" then one of them is bound to try it out.

Oh, and I think it's a fine thing to take your kids out for ice cream. The president is paid to think, and you can think when you're eating frozen treats with your family. Sometimes you think better and more clearly that way.
