Neda

More details are emerging about the 26 year old young woman whose cold blooded murder was captured on video and quickly became the face of the Second Iranian Revolution.

The BBC Persia (via HufPo, it's worth the click) has an interview with Neda's fiance. Needless to say, it's well worth the read. (scroll down to 1:03pm update for full interview)

Kasamin Makan, Neda Agha-Setan's fiancee, was interviewed by BBC Persia, noting that Neda would have turned 27 this year. "Neda's goal was not Mousavi or Ahmadinejad, it was her country and was important for her to fight for this goal. She had said many times that if she had lost her life or been shot in the heart, which indeed what happened, it was important for her to continue in this path," he said.

..."It seems that Mr. Mousavi's supporters are trying to portray Neda as one of his supporters. This is not so. Neda was incredibly close to me and she was never supportive of either two groups. Neda wanted freedom and freedom for all."

The regime outlawed any memorials for Neda but that didn't stop protesters from gathering. Of course, the thugs attacked.

"comatus" from the comments

I finally looked at her picture, and she looked familiar somehow. I think we have a statue of her in the harbor at New York. Delacroix caught a glimpse of her once on a barricade in Paris. She carried water to the cannon crews at Monmouth, and drove a chariot at Watling Street. She cut off Holophernes' head.

She will be missed, but she will be back. She's that kind of girl.

What Neda's death means to different generations in Iran. It's a Daily Beast link via Allah but worth the read.

I would also like to note that many diverse pople (lefties/righties for exampel) are putting aside their differences and working for Iranian people.

Mostly those who complain are those that are disapopointed their people are seeing/working with the 'other side' as normal people.  Not screeching lefites or hate filled righties.

For the fourth time in five months on the job, President Obama will hold a news conference with Washington reporters -- this time, in the Rose Garden of the White House. (tomorrow)

White House press conferences in the past have been seen as free-wheeling events, with notepad-waving reporters shouting and competing for the president's attention. But under Obama and his predecessor, President George W. Bush, they have been somewhat scripted and tightly controlled.

The president decides in advance who he will call on, choosing from a list before him at the podium. The opportunities for anyone not on that list is pretty limited, and asking a follow-up question generally depends on how aggressive the reporter wants to be.

8 Bush pre-approved journalists and their questions?

That's honestly the first I've heard of it.  Wouldn't you think there'd be endless screeching about it if this were the case?  Not sayin' it isn't true, but I'd be shocked if the press didn't whine about it for 8 years if it were.

11 Politico getting in on the act re Obama's falling numbers

FINALLY.

All it takes is a ton of emails to the editors to get some action

Eroding confidence in President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy and ability to control on spending have caused his approval ratings to wilt to their lowest levels since taking office, according to a spate of recent polls, a sign of political weakness that comes just as he most needs leverage on Capitol Hill.

The good news for Obama is that his approval ratings—57 percent in a Gallup tracking poll over the weekend—remain comfortably high by historical standards for presidents.

But the trend lines among a variety of polls over the past several days are unmistakable: Independents and even some Republicans who once viewed him sympathetically are becoming skeptical, and many people of all stripes are anxious about economic and fiscal trends.

Obama’s approval rating has dipped below 60 percent on other occasions according to Gallup, but while those slumps lasted only a day, this one appears to be more persistent.

15 You know Tiger lost today because the course, the weather and his knee (MO) got the better of him.  For some reason lately Tiger reminds me of the prez.  Glover played a good game on a tough, subtly difficult course, he deserved his win.   Glover realized early on that sometimes you have to go against what you know is the "right way in golf" and just use a different club from everyone else.  Mixing the art and the science are what makes the champions.

50 Maddogg is wrong about one thing: this was a necessary death for Iran to wake up.

Same as in the last revolution, and basically throughout all of shia islam, these people center their constructive protests around 'mourning'.

It's stupid, and it shouldn't be that way.  While I do think big changes are coming to Iran, I do not see these people moving away from theocracy.  too many crazies and too much apathy.  This girl didn't like Mousavi any more than Ahmedinijad, according to reports, but she's being used by Mousavi as a prop.  And he's probably going to get away with it.

You could tell he was tired, angry, frustrated, hopeless - not inspirational at all. We're in a position to inspire strength and hope in Iran and this is out the prez looks. 58 I am noticing a trend. Supporters are finding the position of the administration untenable given the straight up shot of reality we just got. Posted by: MikeTheMoose at June 22, 2009 02:08 PM (0q2P7)

59 Sorry, I just can't care too much.  I know that, objectively, since Obama plans to let Iran have nukes, it would be nice if the government were a bit less crazy, but I just don't like the Iranians as a people, though I know there are some nice individuals.  I have spent pretty much my entire media-aware life watching whackjobs scream "death to America", "death to the Jooz" etc., and I tend to think that most of them mean it.  Now some of them are screaming "death to dictators"?  How about "down with dictators" or "make my vote count" - and of course they are always still screaming "Allahu Akbar".  In the 1980s, they probably screamed "death to New Coke" and claimed that the switch was a Zionist conspiracy.

Frankly I tend to think that, as a nation, they are bent - too much propoganda over too long a period.  Maybe there are "good" educated elites, but if they achieve real democracy, that may not matter more than it does now.  I don't think even the vaunted youth democraphic likes America - sure they like American dollars, Nike, Coke, Pixar and all that, but they don't like America the nation (not that they really know or understand it) and they'll scream "death to America" at the rumor of a dropped Koran.

66 Holdfast,

Dude, I could round up as many people born and raised in the US to do that as you've seen in Iran.

They may not love us (though more than a few like us), them starting down the road to decency is in our interests. Even in a best case scenario they will want the bomb but if there aren't crazy mullahs with their fingers on the button and they decide they'd rather be rich than isolated because of their support of terror groups, the world will be a lot better off.

America's never been as loved worldwide as we like to imagine. No one really likes the star football player with all the money and girls, even if he is a great guy. In fact that usually makes us dislike them all the more. It's just human nature.

We don't need to be loved or even feared (at least by decent nations) just left alone and be able to do business with.

On all those counts, the people in the streets in Iran, on balance are our best hope.

On a personal note, I'm usually with the people who want 'freedom' and are willing to charge unarmed after armed thugs to get it. We can sort the details out of what it all means later.

I'm not all doe eyed over Mousavi. My hope (and that's all it is) is that they bring the Mullahs down. That will go a long way to making things better. Mousavi may or may not be different than the guy who was PM 25 years ago but if he gets the gig now, he will owe it to 'the people' more than the Mullahs. I'm betting (and hoping) that they are more interested in a better life than in being isolated because their goverment wants to blow up Jews.

I could be wrong but I'd rather see the fire burn and find out where it takes us.

Apology accepted, Captain Neda.

Too soon?

84 I finally looked at her picture, and she looked familiar somehow. I think we have a statue of her in the harbor at New York. Delacroix caught a glimpse of her once on a barricade in Paris. She carried water to the cannon crews at Monmouth, and drove a chariot at Watling Street. She cut off Holophernes' head.

And stabbed the terrorist Jean-Paul Marat to death in 1793.
