| Obama: I'd Be A Laissez-Faire Kind Of Guy But Bush Screwed Everything UpAs Slu put it in the sidebar, this is from the "Are you fucking kidding me department" (I didn't use the $#@$ like Slu, it's just how I roll). Here's what the largest stockholder in 2 of America's 3 auto manufacturers, many of it's largest banks the guy who just appointed a 'compensation czar' and is proposing to take over about 1/5 of the US economy through health care 'reform' has to say about his preferred style."I think the irony … is that I actually would like to see a relatively light touch when it comes to the government," he said Tuesday in a White House interview. ..."You set up some rules of the road, ensure transparency and openness, guard against huge systemic risk that will lead...government potentially having to step in to avoid a depression, and then let entrepreneurs and individual businesses compete and do what they do. "And so it's puzzling to me sometimes to hear the standard conservative critique of what we're doing, when essentially every step we're taking involves cleaning up the mess that we found when we arrived here at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue."He'd prefer a light touch by government much like Paris Hilton would really rather just be doing charity work in Africa out of the public spotlight or Bill Clinton would rather just spend a cozy night spooning with Hillary. Unfortunately, life doesn't always let us do what we want. In that case we must do what we have to, which in Obama's case is regulate the hell out of the private sector. The Obama administration last night detailed a series of proposals to involve the government more deeply in private markets, from helping to steer borrowers into affordable mortgage loans to imposing new limits on the largest financial companies, in a sweeping effort to curb the kinds of reckless risk-taking that sparked the economic crisis. ...It also asks Congress to authorize the government for the first time to dismantle large firms that fall into trouble, avoiding a chaotic collapse that could disrupt the economy. Federal oversight would be extended to dark corners of the financial markets, imposing new rules on trading in complex derivatives and securities built from mortgage loans. The government would create a new agency to protect consumers of mortgages, credit cards and other financial products. And the administration would increase its coordination with other nations to prevent businesses from migrating to less regulated venues.Ah yes, the mark of a light touch by government...ensuring no one can escape its grasp. Poor Obama, forced to enact all of these statist policies by that mean George W. Bush. Why can't the man just finish his waffles while reading Adam Smith? Comments1
I actually would like to see a relatively light touch when it comes to the government. I don't think that phrase means what he thinks it means. I think that in his mind, what he's doing is a "light touch" because it isn't straight out fascism/communism. In the end, there will be only... Messiah's double talk. To deflate that impression, Mr. Obama's chief White House economic
adviser, Lawrence Summers, was in New York a few days ago to give a
speech saying essentially: No, we aren't socialists.
Mmmhmm. As he gave his speech, Obama announced he wanted further control over the financial sector. Then he announced that he wanted to control the compensation at banks. And then he said that he wanted to nationalize the medical industry. I take heart in Summers announcing that this is definitely not socialist. Quite a load off! El Dueche was just on the news (Fox) talking about his new plans for extensive regulations to tack onto an already over regulated industry. He spewed forth one lie after another. Such famous Commie gems as “risk taking” greed et al that caused the financial meltdown. What really pisses me off is not one mention by the Fox talking heads of the FACT that the meltdown was CAUSED by regulations like CRA and F&F oversight as well as Bwarney Fwank and Piss Dodd opposition to reining in these problems. He wants more power for the Fed and they were a heavy contributor to the housing bubble as well.
No didn’t expect the Liar ‘n Chief to mention the Commiecrat culpability in this mess but I would expect the network that did the one hour special that pointed out a lot of the problems that led to the mess to at least mention the fact that the real problems were not being addressed.

This might require some deeper analysis by bigger brains here, and maybe I'm stating something the rest of the planet already knows, but it has recently dawned on me that it's not really the message but the PERCEPTION of the message. If you are competent, but communicate that competence incompetently, then you may as well be incompetent. To me, this is a cognitive breakthrough, because I always thought that basic competence always wins out and now I no-longer believe that. At the end of the day, it is marketing the message, and no so much the message itself. Go ahead, mock me for my naiveté. Well, we _do_ need better regulation, and/or better transparency, over the damn derivatives. We also need to try to keep leverage reasonable, at least in institutions that are "too big to fail." And it's hard to argue that the SEC was doing its job properly when it came to the Madoff scandal; they had plenty of detailed warnings about the guy. Now, I'm not blaming W himself for any of that, and I sure as hell wish the regulatory reforms weren't coming from BHO and a Dem congress, who are going to muck it up probably. I've mentioned before that I live in a former communist bloc country. They are still struggling with how to actually implement capitalism, but I guarantee you that these people have NO desire to go back to the "bad old days." (And, God bless them, they are pretty anti-Barry at this point.) So, if countries that have actually LIVED through Communism don't want that form of government, why the heck do the Dems/Liberals think Americans, who have always had the right to life, liberty and the PURSUIT of happiness (not necessarily always getting it) want to embrace a socialized state? And why should I have to pay taxes to support some other, worthless SLC (shitty little country) who's mysogynistic tyrant leaders seize wealth for themselves, and do nothing to try to bring the standard of living of their country up to reasonable standards? Bush forced him to screw the bondholders of Chrysler and GM and reward the UAW with our money? I guess Bush forced him to drop the charges against voter-intimidating Black Panthers, too? Did Bush force him to politicize the census? Do I get that right: Bush made him appoint tax cheats to the cabinet and a racialist mediocrity to the Supreme Court? Bush leaves him no choice but to force the cap-and-trade energy tax and federal health care on America? Now we know why Obama had no idea what Reverend Wright was preaching: he was secretly reading Hayek and Milton Friedman in church. But seriously, folks. Blaming it on Bush is just misdirection. When he says "the mess we found" he is referring to the way America is. Take his word for it: he wants a "clean break with our troubled past" since we are a country with a "tragic history". We have a flawed constitution that, according to Barry, only says what the government cannot do to you, but fails to specify what the government must do FOR you. Which is where BO comes in (the president, not his dog). He would have taken the same radical steps in 1992, 2000 or 2016. And he will never be satisfied and he will never stop turning the country inside out. Posted by: El Gordo at June 17, 2009 10:54 AM (Jacdc) 95

This's why American politics is in the toilet right now.
We can't have an honest debate because the Dims/leftards run as stealth candidates and the media doesn't do their job of informing the public. So, BO can say silly shit and no one asks him the obvious question. If he were honest about what he wanted to do, we could have that discussion. But because he won't and the MSM refuses to do it's work within the framework of republic, we get these goofy cults of personality around Dim candidates no matter how fucked up they and their policies are. And non-issue oriented abuse of candidates(see Palin) that bring and run on real honest policy and threaten the "god's" charisma factor. #94... +1 It would be interesting to see just what could break the addicts of their O-habit. I can think of something that would, eventually, turn the MSMbots against their god. Suppose this jug-eared, crypto-fascist snot-twaddle had an epiphany, learned something, and realized the gubmint is the problem, not the solution. He could enact reforms that would make wingers drool... for example, a payroll tax moratorium for two years, accompanied by executive orders to cut twice as much in expected revenue from departments like Education and HHS. Or ordering shares of GM and Chrysler owned by gubmint to be distributed to taxpayers, and cutting off TARP corporate welfare to banks. Or opening ANWAR and pushing for Yucca Mountain to open. Or spearheading serious tort reform on behalf of doctors. Or finally telling corporate farmers that they no longer get subsidies. "We can't afford everything we want. In my spirit of bold experimentation, I have decided we must try a different direction, because our current one isn't working." And I'll bet the MSM would not only let Barry get away with it, they would praise him for it... just because he's Barry. But after it becomes clear that such a path is actually shrinking gubmint, and letting people mind their own business, they would finally turn on him, and with a vengeance. One can dream. Prosper? Not so much. Posted by: George Orwell at June 17, 2009 11:22 AM (AZGON) 135

Why aren't the GOP talking heads out there telling people on SS that they voted for O because they didn't want to lose benefits, but that is exactly want BHO is doing. Because of his economic decisions, states/cities/Fed gov't have raised taxes and fees on everything and that reduces their money. Cap and Trade will raise the cost of everything - that reduces their money. Obamahealthcare will not only reduce their money because it will raise the cost of drugs, but they will not get the treatments that are available to them now. Not only that, but right now they can get into a doc/specialists today but under OHC they will be on a long waiting list. The level of care (not including treatments) will also be greatly reduced because the number of docs will dwindle yet the number of patients to be seen will be greatly increased. Hell, I'm a stay at home mom and I know this. Why don't they? Where are the commercials, web ads, mailers, etc? Posted by: momma at June 17, 2009 12:21 PM (penCf) 196

With JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and other big banks reportedly set to start repaying TARPfunds as early as tomorrow, many are ready to turn the page on this sordid chapter in our nation's financial history. But Barry Ritholtz, CEO of Fusion IQ and author of Bailout Nation, is still trying to figure out why we went through the whole exercise in the first place. In his new book Bailout Nation, Ritholtz discusses the possibility that TARP was all a giant ruse, "a Hank Paulson engineered scam to cover up the simple fact that Citigroup was teetering on the brink of implosion," has he writes in his popular blog The Big Picture. "A loan just to Citi alone would have been problematic, went this line of brilliant reasoning, so instead, we gave money to all the big banks." Because they're stupid. Otherwise they wouldn't have voted for Obama. Plot out a Venn diagram of those who are economically and financially ignorant in one circle with lack of rational thinking or deductive reasoning in another. Your Obama voters are right in the sweet spot. I lived and worked in Canada for a year as a manager. When the topic of health care would come up, the Canadians would all brag about how it was "free." *I was getting paid out of an American entity, so I wasn't taxed at the Canadian rate. When I pointed out the difference in our tax rates and what I paid in health premiums, I explained that they were actually paying more for their "free" health care than I was, plus longer wait times, less access to modern drugs, etc. *BLINK* *BLINK* *BLINK* "But, Jeff... it's free. We don't have to pay any money when we go to the doctor." You can't expect someone to act in their own economic self-interest when they have no understanding of the term. *this is not representative of all Canadians, just the majority as represented in their parliament. Certainly the principals in the company are very astute and have do adopt the approach that the only thing they can do to combat the avarice of their gov't was to make enough money to become bulletproof. Happily, they're doing very well. Posted by: Empire of Jeff at June 17, 2009 12:35 PM (xGIqT) 200

This sociopath is convinced, thanks in part to the MSM, that he is entitled to all the power he’s grabbed. Not “meddling”? “Light touch”? That’s what this bald-faced liar calls his ham-fisted approach while he’s destroying our economy. ".....government potentially having to step in to avoid a depression, and then let entrepreneurs and individual businesses compete and do what they do." They can’t compete, you feckless jackass. The “rules” you’ve set up have forced some of the largest corporations in America to become government-owned assets. It’s already being felt by smaller businesses in a kind of domino effect. Of course he has to spew the requisite ‘It’s Bush’s fault I have to force socialism down your throats’. You know it’s bad when former Soviet/communist countries are warning against the acceptace of a socialist state, and Hugo Chavez marvels at the fact he and Fidel Castro are ‘to the right of Obama’. Welcome to the USSA.

This is particularly funny considering the videos that Verum Serum has been surfacing about their plan to force out private medical insurers with their "parallel" public system that gives patients a choice.
Here it is: http://www.verumserum.com/?p=5660 Have you all seen Keith Hennessey's analysis of the health care bill? http://keithhennessey.com/2009/06/09/house-health-bill/ That is not a "light touch". That is redistribution of wealth using health care as a smokescreen. Posted by: Wintery Knight at June 17, 2009 09:17 PM (aZbIY) 233
Ooops, I just walked away from here, and thanks to a tip from one of my commenters ECM, I found this story at the LA Times.
Excerpt: Under the plan, expected to be released Wednesday, the government would have new powers to seize key companies -- such as insurance giant American International Group Inc. -- whose failure jeopardizes the financial system. Currently, the government's authority to seize companies is mostly limited to banks. Posted by: Wintery Knight at June 17, 2009 09:21 PM (aZbIY) 234

This is basically what all modern statists say. "We'd be as pro-freedom as the next guy, but . . . [X] screwed things up." "X" being Bush, greedy businessmen, the Hoover Presidency, the Trusts, whatever. It makes one miss the relative honesty of the Pharoahs, Nero, Tamurlaine, etc., who didn't offer any phony philosophical apologia for their actions: it was just: "Hey, I've got this huge army at my command. Do what I say or die. That's it. F*ck you." Although even they, I suspect, occasionally may have felt the need to justify. I can just hear the first Pharoah saying, "You know, freedom was great when we were in caves but those damned Hebrews screwed things up. Now go build my pyramid or I'll throw you to the crocodiles."
