Iran: Election Protests Spread

Ahmadinejad says he won, Mousavi files protest and all hell breaks loose.

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his re-election was "real and free" and cannot be questioned — but that isn't stopping his campaign rival from appealing the results.

Reformist Mir Hossein Mousavi accused the government of voter fraud and many of his supporters have clashed with police in Tehran's streets.

"Today, I have submitted my official formal request to the council to cancel the election result," Mousavi said in a statement. "I urge you Iranian nation to continue your nationwide protests in a peaceful and legal way."

Protesters set fires and smashed store windows Sunday in a second day of violence as groups challenging Ahmadinejad's re-election tried to keep pressure on authorities. Anti-riot police lashed back and the regime blocked Internet sites used to rally the pro-reform campaign.

PJ Media has a rundown of the reports getting out of Iran. Some highlights...

* From Tehran and Tabriz to Mash’had, Esfahan, Kerman, Shiraz, Sanandadj, Babol, and many other cities and towns across Iran people are out in the streets, rioting against the Khomeinist regime’s election results, chanting “Death to the Dictators.”

* Following Khamenei’s order of disconnection of the text messaging and SMS system across Iran on Thursday, since late Saturday evening, June 13, all the cellular phones in Tehran have also been entirely disconnected.

* Entekhab News Agency reported on late Saturday night (June 13) that the other three candidates, Ahmadinejad’s opponents, Mir-Hossein Moussavi, Mehdi Karoubi, and Gholam-Hossein Karbashchi, are now all under house arrest. This report adds that thirty of the journalists who write for the newspaper Etemad’eh Melli (National Trust), owned by Karoubi, are all now also under arrest.

There are unconfirmed (via StopAhmadi Twitter feed) that there are tanks on the streets of Tehran. Please add the appropriate amount of salt to that. One of the benefits of local reports is immediacy, while confirmation can be an issue.

The White House is taking a wait and see approach, which in fairness is about all they can do.

We've been hearing for years about the need for the people of Iran to change their government and how much the US should support dissidents. Well, here's their chance. Are the people of Iran able to change the course of their country or will the regime beat them back? Also, the last time the Iranian people overthrew a government, things didn't turn out so well, so let's not delude ourselves that there's some silver bullet here.

While everyone seems to be pinning their hopes on Mousavi as a moderate and reformer, it's helpful to remember that he was Prime Minister under Ayatollah Khomeini.

Update: Haaretz: Mousavi arrested. Plus this YouTube channel of Iranian street protests.

Speaking before the election, John Bolton wasn't optimistic that much would change (especially on foreign and nuclear policy).

A Iraninan protest would not be complete without a "Death to _______" chant.

Yeah, great 'reformers' you got there, Iran.

From what I understand, the evidence they have for voter fraud is 1) high turnout and 2) a popular opposition party.

Those are the same claims made by the Leftists in 2004 after Bush won. They simply could not *believe* Kerry lost because everyone *they knew* hated Bush.

3 The White House is taking a wait and see approach, which in fairness is about all they can do

That's all they can do now, after doing nothing to encourage a dynamic outcome up til now.  They can't even tout the success of democracy in next door Iraq since Obama didn't support it.

(admittedly, Bush didn't do enough with Iran either.  Opportunities squandered all around)

I won't be able to form an opinion until Adriana Lima or his boyfriend Nigel Tufts, who posts from the same computer, tells me what's up. I'm sure he and he are truly informed insiders about the Iranian elections. I'll just wait until he or he posts whatever drivel is bouncing around his or his skull cavity and declares overwhelming victory against people who are either ignoring him or mocking his dumbassery.

So. Which one of the candidates is the white guy?

The 'reformers' in Iran also claim the race was extremely close therefore the landslide victory does not jive with the pre-election predictions.

Close according to whom? The opposition, that's whom. If their claim of the race being close is bunk, then their entire claim for fraud is total bunkum.

I'm not defending Ahmadinejad. But I smell a rat. I think the 'reformers' are every bit as corrupt as the current regime. And as a rule, I don't believe anything that comes from that part of the world. Liars, all of them.

11 Guys, does it matter if Dinner-jacket stole the election?  No, what matters is the mob thinks he did and appears to be willing to do something about it.  I say any instability for Iran before they get nukes is a good thing.

The fact that they were on their roofs at 4 in the morning shouting 'Allahu Ackbar' as a means of protest doesn't really hearten me to their intentions, though.

And please bring on the Nazi to tell us about Iran's superior democracy.

12 Perhaps the mullahs finally went too far this time.

Not to say that the "reformers" are very trustworthy themselves,  but I hope all their rioting ends up bringing Iran's current rulers down, I have a feeling that the "reformers" may not neccesarily change too much but would still be a lot better than what Iran's got going on right now.  Plus I'd love to see Khomeini and A-jad get their come-upance.

Those a-holes have been trying to get their hands on Iran since at least WWII.  Anyone think they've given up on that?

Whenever chaos rules in a place like Iran, you can bet your ass that there's a bunch of guys named Boris pushing buttons in the background.  Add to that the Chinese interest in Iranian oil, and you've got a real behind the scenes cluster.

For some reason, I don't like the chances for real reform, what with the pack of Nancy-girls we've got in the WH and at State, holding hands and blathering on about "rights" and "human love of freedom" while the hard guys get busy kneecapping the opposition.

Actually they were chanting Death To The Government.

However, don't count on Barry and Co. coming out and denouncing this. These are exactly the types of thuggish tactic's they promote and encourage. Using a partisan apparatus to hijack the voting process to subvert the will of the people and undermine Democracy is a page right out of a liberals playbook.

If he say's anything denouncing the current regime all Achmadinejad has to do is go: "*ahem* ACORN

That's why as I have perused the left side of the web today,  liberal outrage over this to me seem's fairly disingenuous.

I have to, over at Huffpo which actually had pretty good coverage of the event. But they didn't let me down when I went to the comments. Every comment on every page discussed the comparison between this and the "stolen elections" in 2000 and 2004 and how Americans are pussies for not uprising then.

Thank God others were there to tell them all to fuck off in trying to compare what is happening in Iran with a Supreme Court ruling. And they are frothing at the mouth as we speak.

I assumed Aramalamadingdong would be re-elected, no matter what the actual outcome of the election was. I'm surprised it took those in Iran (or anywhere else) by surprise that this was the outcome.

That said, I don't know enough about Iranian politics to comment knowledgably, or even ignorantly. It doesn't sound like the other guy would've been that much different than Aramalamadingdong, and the mullahs are supposedly the ones really in charge, but then you have the revolutionary guard and it seems like the one who controls them controls the country.

Am I supposed to be hoping the revolution succeeds? Or hoping that it is quickly put down?

40 The reports of Arab-accented or Arabic-only security forces working the streets in the cities is really interesting. Despite the common religion, Persians and Arabs haven't exactly had a loving relationship, historically speaking. If the reports are true, it tells me that the mullahs are hanging on by a thread. If they can't trust their own Revolutionary Guards to act forcefully on the streets, that's a sign of profound weakness.

The American equivalent would be the British use of Hessians in the Revolution, and the Third Amendment (quartering of troops).

41 PGIS, Dave has it right, a lengthy confrontation that leaves Obama no one to have his direct negotiations with is best for preventing him from harming the situation.  Particularly good is if the 'youth' discontent extends to Iran's military.  If we could get someone like a Musharraf to emerge in Iran, that's probably the best we can hope for at the moment.

43 The Mullahs f'ked up here.  At least from what I've read about this guy, they probably could have continued doing what they've been doing and more pressure would still have been put on Israel to back down now that a reformer was in charge.  Now, it makes it tougher for the U.S. to tell Israel to sit back and shut up, and even if Obama wants to do that, this turn of events would make it easier (and the choice clearer) for Netanyahu to go it alone and ignore him.

There were (if I remember correctly) hundreds of thousands of people holding candle-light vigils in Tehran after 9/11.  There are legitimate, reasonable, sane moderate Iranians.  The Mullahs have the final say in whether someone can and can't run for office, so I don't discount that the other guy here may still be a nut, but that shouldn't be applied to the population at large.

He had previously issued a fatwa, against rigging of the elections in any form or shape, calling it a mortal sin.

I got that from Drew Sully, won't link it, but he's actually been spot on in his coverage of this. So I'll give him credit where credit is do.

However, take it with a grain of salt. I believe the The Supreme Leader is actually a puppet of Achmadinijad now and has been for sometime, not vice versa. Dinnerjacket just uses the Ayatollah to feign legitimacy and has been very effective at installing people who are more loyal to him than the mullahs into his apperatchik over the years.

71 Shit on Twitter is getting weird. Heard a few "rumors" on there asking how long the flight is from Israel to Iran. They are reporting that fighters and refueling tankers took off a couple of hours ago. They didn't where they were going, could easily be routine exercise, and could be plain bullshit.

Either way, still weird.

81 You guys are forgetting the reason there are no sane candidates in an Iranian election, it's because the mullahs pre-approve everyone that runs for election, and mouthing the usual anti-Israel and anti-western platitudes are pretty much a neccessity to get that approval.  I believe most Iranians are not so anti-western, and many could probably be described as pro-western.  But the current political arrangment in Iran guarantees no such candidate will ever stand for election.

It may be that the Iranian protestors are misplacing their trust in an establishment figure like Mousavi but I think most of them genuinely want to end the theocracy in favor of a real democracy.  The interesting question, I think, is how far does Mousavi take this?  Is he a true believer in the islamic revolution?  Or is he willing to push this at risk of destroying or crippling the mullocracy?  After all Mousavi IS an establishment figure and has benefited form the political arrangment in the mullocracy.

Saddam Hussein was arguably a more brutal dictator than the Iranian mullahs and most Iraqis, to this day, hate their liberator, George Bush and the U.S., with a white hot passion.

Yet I'm to believe that Iranians yearn for freedom and democracy? They want regime change?

The Iranians don't want a western-style democracy; they want a Muslim-leftist-theocracy.

I see it's your turn at the computer. We really don't care about the Iranian election, being the crypto-fags that we are. What we really want to know is:

1) When you post, are you sitting on Adriana Lima's lap?

2) If so, what kind of lube do you two use? KY is old-style, always dependable, but we hear Astroglide might be the very thing for you and Adrian to finally reach that nirvana you've been looking for.

Since you're so into role-play, Nigel Lima, I'd recommend you grab some lace wigs from that remywigs guy who posts here all the time. He's quite popular! His site doesn't have any wigs labelled "Nazi Poof" or anything, so you'll have to make sure you and Adriana come to a firm decision on how your sexual role-play is to evolve. I bet with a scissors and a comb, you can come up with something.

86 I've been hoping that Israel would take out the Iranian nuke facilities for some time and believe they eventually will. However not only is this the perfect time to do it, it's also the worst time to do it.

An attack by them now on Iran would take what ever steam this possible revolution has in it, get the people back on the side of the government and give creedence to some conspiracy theory bullshit that somehow the Zionist's have infiltrated and were behind this upheaval all along.

Occam’s Razor suggests that this is a true coup, with Ahmadinejad rigging the results himself and then somehow forcing Khamenei to bless them. But how could he manage that? What’s really going on here?

Exit question: How soon before Hezbollah and Hamas are ordered to attack Israel to distract the Iranian masses?

Posted by: kbdabear at June 14, 2009 05:13 PM (93F13)

89 Damn, Blazer. That's exactly what I was thinking. Here's what I was going to post on that very issue.

The devious part of my character is thinking that this may be, at least partly, a ploy to get Israel to stand down from hitting the Iranian nuke sites. The rhetoric was really ramping up, Bibi is now in power, and everyone was expecting an Israeli strike within weeks.

But if the Israelis strike now, the Iranians would most likely rally around the government against a foreign attacker, even with the unrest that's going on. It's similar to the effect that the Iraqi invasion had on the revolution in '80.

The Israelis are sophisticated enough to know this, so they stand down.

The question I have is: are the mullahs sophisticated enough to plan something like this? I doubt it, but it's worth considering.

90 FYI, Reza Pahlavi, the pretender to the Iranian throne, called yesterday for the end of the Islamic Republic.  This may not carry that weight inside Iran (though I suspect it does carry some with young Iranians who've known nothing but theocracy), but it's hugely significant to the post-1979 Iranian diaspora throughout the rest of the world.

And if the mullah's are fracturing, instead of the nuclear program, how much bombing would it take against dinnerjacket loyalists to create the chaos that would give the rioters room to grow?  Just a thought.  And it's too bad we don't have anyone in government who might consider taking advantage of the situation.

I'd actually like to see the restoration the Iranian monarchy.  Call that "progressive" if you want, but I regard it as rather more conservative and organic to the Persian people than is revolutionary totalitarian theocratic fascism based on Khomeini's heterodox interpretation of Shia Islam.  The Persians were already one of the world's great and ancient civilizations when Arab barbarians like Mohammed were living in tents.

106 The cool thing about calling myself a conservative (this is what mobies do) is that it allows me to distance myself from the Nazi connotations.  You see, the Nazis were originally founded and supported by a bunch of flaming homosexuals--Ernst Rohm, the top of the SA, etc.  Now, don't get me wrong I support everything they believe in, and they were cute and all, but if you're an open homosexual, you're only going to get other open homosexuals.  To really seduce a butch guy into jabbing his dick up your ass, you need to play it straight. 150 No need, AD. I'll take your word for it. I know he lies and changes his identity. I guess I just figured a moby would try to pretend to be a little more ... ummm ... what's the word ... oh yeah ... sane.

I thought the endgame for a moby was to foment dissension among commentators on conservative blogs. He actually provides a diametrically opposed dynamic.

I got no problem allowing for the possibility he is a stupid and batshit insane moby.

151 he may be a leftist moby hoping that someone will agree with his racist crap so that that can be exploited on another blog, he may in actuality be a nazi dickehead. i don't know i don't care. i'm not amused really. anyone that spouts that shit has to be taken at face value and it's totally unacceptable.

155 And calling you a nazi isn't a point of debate.  We all agree that you're a nazi and you've referred to the glorious history of fascism, so obviously you know you're a nazi, destined to similar fate.  That's the one thing we agree on.

no debating with nazis, reason is useless and does nothing but respectability to their views. nazis want to create genocide and death.  i won't argue with them or tolerate them whatsoever.

Well, to get back on topic, hopefully, there are several possibilities here:

1.  As Hot Air thinks, maybe Ahmadman is in fact trying to pull a coup, counting on his support from the Revolutionary Guard and the rural poor to do whatever he wants done.  Possible, not likely.

2. Ahmandman is doing the bidding of the Mullahs in the supreme council, who want to create an image of weakness to prevent an Israeli attack until their nukes are ready. Possible, most dangerous if so.

3.  The supreme council is divided, with the majority wanting to rig the election in favor of Ahmadman and a minority pulling for someone else, hence riots in the streets. Possible.

4.  Despite being vetted by the supreme council, the opposition guy is a real reformer and his followers are spontaneously protesting a rigged election (in other words, for once things really are as they seem).  Can't rule it out, but in a theocracy where they happily hang people in public with public approval, not likely in my book.

I personally think number 2 is most likely, but YMMV.

i don't equate libs with nazis. the nazis advocated genocide from day one. anyone who holds those beliefs is my enemy to death, because sooner or later if they take power it will be me or them. libs are basically democratic and appeal to reason at least ostensibly so. i beleive in human nature and hence i believe  in capitalism, the majority  of people will inevitably do what is best and what is right.

175 Let's take a closer look at the guy the moronosphere prefer to have won the election, Mousavi:

"Mousavi's socialist ideology became very apparent during the 1980s when he initiated Islamic Socialist policies such as subsidized food coupons, oil coupons and converting private enterprises into government controlled entities. Mr. Mousavi ordered the mass-executions of 1980-81, as well as the summer 1988 executions of over 30,000 political prisoners, who were then buried in mass graves.[3][4][5][6][7][8] Mousavi’s parliamentary followers supported continuing islamic resistance operations in Lebanon...Mousavi partially favored state controls over the economy rather than free-market policies. He had also opposed ending the Iran-Iraq war, claiming that "a large portion of the masses" were indignant over the cease-fire."

Mass graves, socialism, supporting Hesbollah...you sure you guys want this cat?

"Back at the time when Mousavi was the Prime Minister -- when this office existed as the actual head of the cabinet in the 1980s - under whose direction Islamic Revolutionary Guards entered Lebanon in huge numbers and laid the framework for today's Lebanese Hezbollah and established the IRI's hold on Lebanon, for the purpose of militarily engaging and destroying Israel. In 1981 in the magazine Payameh Enghelab Mousavi stated that “We are ready to participate within an armed force to fight Israel… We have repeatedly announced that we are ready to have an actual, real and military presence in Southern Lebanon and on the borders of the occupied Palestinian lands…we believe that with the support of the popular forces in Lebanon we shall be able to gradually find effective and powerful bases in the area for fighting Israel …we believe if the flow of oil in Muslim Lands is in the hands of Muslims and if the ideology of Islam controls the opening or closing of the oil valves we shall be able to bring the World Arrogance to its knees, to strike Israel and to destroy it.”"

So, glad that Ahmadinejad won, or is he insufficiently anti-Israel for your liking? :-)

Has anyone thought about the possibility that the Iranians finally just gagged at their entire gov't? And this is a protest because they want to rid themselves of the entire mess? Pity them if so, there's no leader to step in that can be seen.

Of course, that'll mean the present regime will simply stomp a large group of iranians flat, and life will go on as before.
