Swine Flu Pandemic - Declared

The WHO has officially said it, spread of this flu strain is a "pandemic".

The term's meaning has been modified a few times since the last huge ones(1968, 1957). But it generally means what they say it does, significantly measurable rates of infection in x number of countries.

About half of those in the US.

Not quite 30,000 people in 74 countries, and it's killed 140+ people. A lower rate of lethality than other influenza strains, still, it's flu.

The UN claims it wishes to avoid spreading "panic". Words, deeds, etc.

I'm probably out here in left by myself, but I'm interested in seeing the effect of immunization (H1N1) and how that may have lowered lethality in this particular strain. The last bad round of H1N1 was called "Russian Flu", a 1977-78 epidemic. They've included that booger in the brew since then, which may have helped those of us who take the shots every year.

Also don't cough on me.

4 Eh, that's the problem with words that have both a technical meaning and a popular meaning. When I hear something like "pandemic" I expect semi-naked people to be dying in the streets in unlikely poses like a woodcut from the time of the Black Plague. Still, I might change my common practice and actually get a flu shot this year.

5 Also don't cough on me.

Is it okay to sneeze on you instead (can't use my own hands as one is holding a bottle of Valu-Rite and the other is, um, holding something that people have a hard time depicting in ASCII format).

6 Meh we've already been there, done that. As a nation we have moved on to other things we can panic about. It seems like every week there is something different.

Unless you spend a lot of time in the sun (without sunscreen), you should be supplementing with Vitamin D.

Why is the US being hit so hard? Because we're a bunch of fat pasty losers who either don't go outside or can't go out in the sun without slathering ourselves with suncreen.

15 Standing in line with my kids a food joint a couple of weeks ago and some dude behind hacks a huge cough. I turned around and said (joking) "That's not swine flu is it, buddy?"

He said: "It's worse. I'm from Ohio." Everyone around us laughed, because everyone from Pennsylvania knows that everyone from Ohio is the lowest scum of the Earth. They also laughed because I had a gun, and my kids were each holding signs that read "Daddy likes it when you laugh."

Mostly true story.

The thing is, anyone who tells you they know what's going to happen with this bug, regardless of what sort of academic alphabet soup they have after their names, is full of shit. Sure, it could peter out. But it could also hook up with the bird flu now that it's hit Egypt and Asia, and go full-on Grim Reaper. Flu is unpredictable.

Imo, it can't hurt to sock away a few things now in case mutant pigbird men roam the streets coughing and hacking cold death upon all passersby come October.

Also consider talking to your doctor about getting a pneumonia vaccine this summer, especially if you have one of those ubiquitous 'underlying conditions' they keep mentioning every time someone kicks from this. Asthma, smoking, overweight, autoimmune, etc.

Oh, and if you're pregnant or have a family member who is, be very cautious about going to public gatherings, wash hands, etc. It may be mild for most, but 17% of serious cases to date have been preggos.

39 Like #26 said, the real fear isn't what the virus is now, but what it could mutate into as it keeps spreading. Influenza mutates like crazy, which is why the (regular) flu vaccine changes year-to-year, and why various flu strains hop species pretty regularly (as this one originally did). So yes, it could just wind up giving a lot of people coughs and headaches, but it could also pick up a gene or two from another flu strain, or evolve a new allele on its own, and become a super happy fun death virus, especially when the next Northern Hemisphere flu season gets underway (remember, it's almost summer here up north o' the equator). I've read a number of companies are working on vaccines specifically for H1N1, so let's hope they get a working one out and allow us to nip it in the bud.

Posted by: Slowking Man at June 11, 2009 11:53 PM (97WGL)

40 Frightening, this, a strain of flu that's one-half as lethal as the regular ol' influenza that kills 35,000 Americans every yea...

Wait, what?

Posted by: sanssoucy at June 12, 2009 12:15 AM (gMO2s)

41 Also add to this that the crumb crunchers are out of school, and we are not shut up now like we are in the winter. They forecasted, or at least hinted their greatest fears about this is what will take place this fall and winter.

#39 and #26 are correct. This thing already has strains from 3 flu types and we do not know how this is going to play out as it continues to evolve. It has bird flu, swine flu and the regular flu as the major components. Thank goodness most people here have responded well to the treatment, but the scary part is how are the hospitals and doctors going to be able to handle the numbers who could be infected this fall?

They think my Mom had it. They finally got enough antibiotics in her and she is doing much better now, but it has been a long recovery. It seemed to quickly go into pneumonia.

If you think you have it, please do not wait long to seek treatment! This stuff goes from like a cold to the flu ,and to something really bad very quickly.

Posted by: freeus at June 12, 2009 12:30 AM (zxRJP)

42 Yeah. Whew.  If you get flu-like symptoms, run in circles, start crying, and rush to the emergency room.  Keep wailing and sobbing until the ER crew gives you a fucking lollipop.

Fer shit's sake, Chicken Little, stop hyperventilating about flu.  Man the fuck up and get over it.

46 As long as you are not young, or a pregnant woman or a diabetic or have exposure to arsenic or pollution or are a smoker or have TB or AIDS or are a human or a pig then you have little to worry about.

Actually it isn't this strain that causes me concern but the version of it which might adapt to the cells of the lungs and become lethal. The more people who get this strain, the more chance there is for that to happen. I don't want to have to work overtime because my coworkers are in bed or attending funerals. And when I go to the hospital for a court mandated urine test I don't want them to be too over worked to take care of me properly with a smile and a clean cup.

Posted by: Snake Oil Baron at June 12, 2009 07:53 AM (ZhIQq)

47 Let's see... 30,000 cases, divided by the approximate world population (we'll even round down a bit) of 6,700,000,000 ~ 0.00045% of all humans have been infected.  I submit we need to come up with a different term for this sort of thing; pandemic sounds disproportionately bad.

We're going to die.  In the meantime, get your flu shot, and wash your hands.  That way you'll die with clean hands and a sore arm.  Change your underwear too, like your mom told you.  You wouldn't want to die with dirty underwear.

What, the flu shot doesn't work with this strain?  We're going to die.  With sore arms.
