| US-Israel Relations Still CrumblingAnd it's getting worse. First with the petty, commentators in Israel are angry at this photograph, released by the White House, which shows the President on the phone with PM Netanyahu: ![]() Israel's Channel One TV reported that Netanyahu was told Tuesday by an "American official" in Jerusalem that, "We are going to change the world. Please, don't interfere." The report said Netanyahu's aides interpreted this as a "threat."The message could not be any clearer: "that's a nice country you got there. It'd be a shame if something were to happen to it." I don't even have the words to say how shameful Obama's treatment of our allies has been. But this is more horrifying than merely irritating our coalition partners; it goes beyond destroying our special relationship with the UK. Those are bad things, but this is beyond the pale. He is throwing a good people to the wolves. It sickens me. Some Israelis are now preparing for Obama to make good on his threats. Minister-without-Portfolio Yossi Peled, who is not a far-right fire-breather, has circulated a letter suggesting that Israel be ready to sanction the U.S. Peled added that faced with an American government with an activist agenda that does not mesh with Israel's, traditional reactions are no longer relevant. He said he expected that Obama would eventually realize that appeasement and dialogue with countries that support terror would not have positive results. But in the interim, the minister suggests reconsidering military and civilian purchases from the US, selling sensitive equipment that the Washington opposes distributing internationally, and allowing other countries that compete with the US to get involved with the peace process and be given a foothold for their military forces and intelligence agencies. "We must make every effort to maintain our relationship with the US and I respect Obama, but Israel has its own interests and we have to know what our alternatives are," Peled said. "I don't think what I suggest is vengeful. I just think that even a superpower must behave like a partner."PM Netanyahu has a speech on Sunday, which is being viewed as a response to Obama's message in Cairo. I think his coalition gives him almost no choice but to respond in kind to the President's refusal to negotiate on settlements. Comments1
These are just the problems Obama inherited from Bush.

Agreed. I've never ever understood the Left opposition to Israel. This is truly horrifying. And, bluntly, makes the world less safe. Israel is being backed into a corner. Bad bad bad things happen when a country is facing an existential threat to its very existence and there are few allies. Posted by: alexthechick at June 10, 2009 12:17 PM (SHHaV) 7

So the One is throwing Israel to the wolves in order to appease Muslims. Good to know. Of course, this IS what the libs and 52% want, they did vote for him knowing full well he is an anti-semite. It will be very interesting to see what Netanyahu has to say, I hope he tells the One to f**k off and offers an alliance with China and/or Russia. They may be ruthless but at least they stand by their allies.

Obama simply hates America and its history, or at the very least thinks it is a joke - no other explanation for him to allow release of a photo with his feet up on the Resolute Desk.
Also, since Arabs know what an insult it is to show the soles of your feet/shoes, they will see this (correctly or not) as a further signal that Obama intends to abandon Israel. With his treatment of the UK, Sarkozy, Merkel, Israel, Canada and India, it is clear that Obama wishes to snub and hurt any country or politician with whom W had good relations. I thought Clinton was dishonorable and just out for a good time and opposed him because I have higher standards for city dog-catcher than he displayed, but nonetheless I never felt that he intended malice towards our country. Neglect in his duties yes, but not malice. Obama and his ilk represent an enemy power occupying Washington, IMHO. He represents everything that my parents and I escaped from 50 years ago when escaping from Soviet communism. My father has passed away but my mother is appalled as am I. I must preface my remarks by saying that Israel is not a "friend" of America. Nations don't have friends. They have allies. And allies change over time. Seventy years ago Japan was an intractable and vicious enemy; now they are close allies. Who knows what will be true seventy -- or twenty, or even ten -- years from now? Israel, even if it survives as a nation, may not always be an ally of the United States even if the Palestinian issue is resolved. This is the nature of things.
That being said, what disturbs me most about Obama's foreign policy is how he's setting up the chessboard. If you take it as a given that the Western world is largely in conflict with the Muslim world -- which I think is obvious regardless of public rhetoric to the contrary -- then Obama's moves only make sense if you assume that the Muslim world is in the ascendant. Obama obviously believes that Muslim countries would make more advantageous allies than Israel (or, conversely, that Israel is more trouble than it is worth as an ally). I'm not opposed in principle to getting tough on Israel if it advances US interests to do so. (Remember, Israel is not a "friend". It is an ally, and it is an ally because allying with Israel supposedly brings some benefit to the US.) The problem is that Israel's value as an ally -- a democratic island in a hostile sea of mostly-Muslim Arabs -- is still manifest. America and Israel's political goals align more than they differ...if you take it as a given that the Muslim world's interests are incompatible with that of the West. Obama clearly does not believe this, which has some serious implications. The most obvious is that Israel now has to face existential threats (such as a nuclearized Iran) with no promise of American backing. From Israel's standpoint, it means two things: first, other allies must be cultivated (Russia or France, perhaps); second, that the Israeli nuclear deterrent must be revamped and perhaps expanded. It's hard to see any upside to this scenario; perhaps Obama thinks that the Muslim Arab populations of places like Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, Jordan, and the like would become more favorably disposed to the US. This is fantastically unlikely, though, to the point where even the hope should be considered naïve. Muslims don't oppose us because we are Israel's allies or because the poor Palestinians are oppressed; they oppose us because we're not Muslims. Obama has apparently partaken of the Carterite beleif that "diplomacy" is a good thing in and of itself, regardless of any outcome. "Talking" is the goal, not a route to some resolution. It's magical thinking of a kind that the Democrats have excelled in since the end of the second world war. If only we support the Cuban Rebels in the Bay of Pigs, things will somehow work out. If only we throw the Shah of Iran to the wolves, somehow things will work out. If only, perhaps, maybe, could be, might be.... It's no accident that Democrats love the Churchill "better jaw-jaw than war-war" quote, but not the "we will never surrender" speech. Democrats prefer the comforting illusion of progress as opposed to the messy realities of international diplomacy. Diplomacy is only useful as means to an end, not an end in itself. Israel knows this, which is why I think that Netanyahu will have very different private conversations with Obama than he has in public. The public discussions center on amity, on mending fences, on finding common ground, all the usual useless diplo-speak. In private, I think Bibi's message will be much more blunt: Israel will not stand around and wait to be annihilated. Posted by: Monty at June 10, 2009 12:43 PM (/0a60) 68

The only thing keeping him from achieving some form of Chavezian power for life is our military. And that is where the next shoe drops. If he tries in any way to emasculate the military either by budget, leadership changes, policy, etc. then we are in for the hard ride of life. When this happens his master will finally show his face. I respectfully disagree unless you have another term besides friend to
differentiate between an ally like Turkey and an ally like Australia.
Let me change that up a bit and bring up England. England, culturally, is mother and father to us. Australia, like us, is an offspring of England. So is "ally" the right word to use? In some ways -- in many cases (such as the Suez crisis), the British foreign policy goals went crosswise to those of the US, and we actively opposed them. But it never sundered the relationship between us. I think that what we call the "Anglosphere" (the US, Canada, Australia, the UK, etc.) exist outside of the usual national alliances. These countries really are family. Not "friends", necessarily, but family. Will this always be true, though? There will probably come a time when the United States' racial and cultural underpinnings are no longer Ango-Saxon, and I think at that point the old bonds will erode. This may in fact already be happening in the case of the UK -- Bammer is notably cool to old Albion. I think it was Lord Palmerston who observed that nations did not have permanent friends, but only permanent interests. Posted by: Monty at June 10, 2009 01:02 PM (/0a60) 96

Once Obama's affirmative abandonment of Israel sinks in with world leaders you can expect all hell to break loose. Maybe this is what Ole' Joe was referring to back during the campaign. Putting aside (if you can for a moment the ramifications for Israel), just consider.
Russia reclaiming the Baltic states? Maybe not all of them, but you can count on it. China seizing Taiwan. Check. North Korea attacking South Korea and/or Japan. I wouldn't bet against it. I am surprised that people aren't concerned about Peled's threat to sell sensitive AMERICAN military technology (that we GAVE to Israel at U.S. taxpayer expense) on the world market.
The threat to use that as a pressure point, while fully understandable from the perspective of Israel's national interests, is absolutely a threat against the United States. If you are going to take time to carp about how politically incorrect it is to take a photo of some shoes, why not show a little sensitivity about selling technologies which could come back to kill Americans and weaken our strategic advantage? You take the time to read a "threat" into the administration's request that Israel not interfere with US foreign policy, but you ignore the OVERT threat made by Peled. Of course, it makes sense to criticize Obama's policy. But equipping foreign governments, industries, and agents against our national interests is just beyond the pale. China seizing Taiwan. Check.
I'm part Taiwanese and I have relatives over there. I used to envision this as a scenario where the island was blockaded by Chinese destroyers and a shooting war broke out. Not so much anymore. The current Taiwanese government supports "one China" policy and has been warm and fuzzy towards the ChiComs. It's similar to North/South Korea in that there is a sizable number of people in Taiwan who support reunification and rather touchingly believe that they can get the Commies to keep them in the manner to which they have become accustomed. Small nations with unfriendly neighbors like Israel, South Korea and Taiwan have the most to lose under Obama's new "throw 'em under the bus" policies. He is making it crystal clear that the US is no longer going to ride in and save the day. (Especially now that the national debt has ballooned and China holds the purse strings.) Posted by: Angry Beaver at June 10, 2009 01:12 PM (7sVL1) 111
Sure Obama is responsible.
But if we follow your logic, then Israel (or any foreign government) would be entitled to do whatever they want to the United States, whenever they wanted. Which, in a sense, is true. But then, we would be entitled to treat them with the same concern or lack thereof. And, quite frankly, I might not support Obama on everything. But when it comes to defending the United States against military threats.... I know what side I am on. So, sure, an Israeli might say, "The United States deserves to have its secrets sold on the world market." But an American might reply, "Not so fast." And we could back that up. Posted by: bt at June 10, 2009 01:17 PM (TBoxe) 112
100 - Israel is a small country. The technology that he is speaking of is Israeli technology that the U.S. has asked Israel, as a good ally, not to sell to governments who are friends with Israel e.g. India, but who are not necessarily consistently friendly with the U.S. Israel, as a good ally, has respected this request even to their detriment financially. Much of the Israeli technology, by-the-way, has been shared with U.S. defense companies to make it possible for the U.S. to do cool things like intercept ICMBs and such (the actual list would take a week to compile).

Of course Israel has come up with some good tech on their own. But everyone knows that the Israeli defense industry and the IDF is critically dependent on the United States, they have been for decades.
And, from a strictly nationalistic perspective, if the United States thinks the sale of a technology is going to compromise the effectiveness of our military, I think the United States should stop them. Israel is its own country and they can do what they want. But I think Americans have a moral obligation in word, if not in deed, to say "HELL NO!" to Israel in this case. It's blackmail, plain and simple. And we should think long and hard about whether or not we want to run around calling countries like this our "friend" or referring to a "special relationship." Does anyone else besides me see a potential for domestic conflict brewing, and perhaps the necessity for it? One bit of a bad note though: from what my kids in the military tell me, don't count on any joy from our armed forces -- most of them are totally in love with the big owe, from officers to enlisted, from paper pushers to legs, and of all gender, ethnic, and racial persuasion. In fact, my kids have been called "the Devil" and "a very bad person" for speaking critically (off hours of course) of just some of his decisions, as in "I don't think that was a very good idea" -- that got them called, literally, "in cahoots with the Devil". I said it once and I'll say it again, I stand by the United States. I feel for Israel and I hope that when push comes to shove, Obama will back them up, provided it is in our interest to do so. But I am not going to stand by another country's threats just because I don't like this particular president. Well, what exactly did Israel threaten? To not buy our stuff, to sell stuff to other people, to partner, ally and work with other countries instead of us. All of which they are perfectly within their rights to do. They did not threaten to bomb Florida. And if the US will not be any aid to them, what do you expect them to do? I do not fault any person for acting in their own best rational self-interest. Nor will I fault any country for acting reasonably in pursuit of it's own's interests. Posted by: Entropy at June 10, 2009 03:41 PM (m6c4H) 159
I hope Bibi can hold strong against our President-Moron. As 2010 approaches, Congress will be able to somewhat temper Obama's Israel hatred, but not that much... It's the executive branch that really calls the shots on foreign policy...

That's just my kids' personal experiences within the services -- but they're stationed at pretty big bases -- essentially it comes down to the same split within the ranks as there is in the civilian world (there are those that don't care for him, those that do but are beginning to have buyer's remorse, and those that are absolute cultists -- and just as moonbatty as they come "yur tha Debil!" sweet Jesus on a stick!...but with shooty things); there are the ones that see him as the great multiculti hope and a fair number of academy types that "like the cut of his jibe"), however the dude is the CinC so he does get their professional support and that has to be kept in mind by folks. So while I hate to be the bearer of sour raisins, and goodness knows it sort of depressed me too, just making sure people's reality-o-meter is firmly fixed: the military has a sworn duty to do; they won't let sentiment stand between that, and even if something were to happen, you'd probably see a split in the services much like the split within the country itself -- so don't go counting on any majority support from the military, just sayin'. Sorry. Posted by: unknown jane at June 10, 2009 03:50 PM (EpmMs) 161
I think Barry Sotero did this on purpose. Everything he does is political calculus. Remember, this is the man child that gave Hillary the finger during a Raleigh campaign event. He is an arrogant, unprofessional, immature douchebag. Posted by: runningrn at June 10, 2009 04:11 PM (aC/SY) 162

I know OF them the good people i know think they are shitbirds and didnt like those folks before they declared who they supported in the election. But there are far far more who didnt vote his way. Unkown jane, is your family Army Navy or AF? I know AF is downright different that the people i know. So it might depend on the branch.

Oh, that White House protocol office, they're almost as gaffetastic as the Vice Buffoon. What bright bulb thought it would be a good idea to show the President talking to any world leader with his feet propped up on his desk? Does that look like a thoughtful stance? A pose you'd make to show how serious and intellectual you are in your approach to that country's problems? Not quite the Scare Force One photo op, but still dumb. Posted by: eringobragh at June 10, 2009 05:27 PM (XqEBL) 166
No, the more I think about it, this was not stupidity. It was calculated. I lived in a Muslim country for 5 years and I still won't show the bottoms of my feet to people even here. It becomes reflexive habit and really, it is sort of rude to do that anyway. Obama grew up in Indonesia. He's sending a message. Flipping the bird to Israel, and reinforcing his message in Cairo that he's working for Muslim interests. Don your apocalypse gear. Posted by: eringobragh at June 10, 2009 05:33 PM (XqEBL) 167
Oh, bullshit. Obama can read a telemprompter and give a good speech but he can't change the world like he wanted to. Just look at the European elections. Obama is a weak figure. Nobody takes him seriously.

My family is militarily...miscegenated. I'm USMC (as was my dad, my uncles, my cousins, my grandpa), my husband was 2nd Ranger. The two oldest girls are Army (although I am holding out hopes for my son and at least one of the younger girls -- Semper Fi). My one daughter is 96 Bravo -- that's what she went in as, but they may have changed her MOS, because technically she's supposed to be a Fobbit -- although they've got her running Ma on missions beyond the wire from time to time as well as doing 96B work, so she gets a lot of contact with different MOS and non-Army -- from what she's seen: yes, Army and Marine legs and arty are the least likely to be happy with him, same with some, some older NCOs and mustang officers; the AF are more likely to be pro and, sadly, a fair few of the women are pro owe no matter what MOS they have or rank or branch;. The other girl went in originally as what was 21Utah, but they've combined that with 21Sierra and it's 21 Foxtrot now (???); she doesn't get out beyond the wire, at least not yet (for which I am grateful) -- and it's about the same split there too. Once again, a lot of ladies are pro-owe. Fortunately my daughters aren't. It may change with some as the realization of what's going on -- there's already some griping about people's bonuses and promotion raises getting frozen; that doesn't make the troops happy. The main thing is the ROTC and academy officers coming in, the greenies wanting to be careerists -- they are, according to both, very pro owe and extremely political (for the most part, there's always those who aren't). Remember he has "experienced Islam on three different continents". There is nothing, absolutely nothing to indicate he did not behave this way in the picture on purpose. He has gone out of his way to make it crystal clear how he feels about Jews. The speech the L.A. Times covered up was one, Rev. Wright for 20 years, Rashid Khalidi, Raila Odinga, Rezko, Ayers, Said, Farrakhan, Frank Marshall Davis and the list goes on and on with names of people who are anti-Israel, and anti-American Jews.
Look at the people in his Administration! Susan Rice! etc. etc. I am with Monty on the new ally lists. Those who were, are being taken off the list, and those who desire our demise are on. We should have seen the Israel positioning coming after he has decided not to allow the former Soviet block countries a missile defense program to protect them from Putin. Israel is not the only nation we are going to find hating us. Arutz Sheva and the JP both have comment sections where most Jews are pissed to the max at us. What I found weird was some American posting comments actually told these Israelis that most Americans do not like Jews anymore and that the GOP on has 20% of its people who will desire Obama to protect them. How do we convince Jews all over the world we despise POTUS, and fiercely wish this was not happening? Will we be able to recover? Peled did not mention one asset Israel has which we desperately need. Intelligence! We need whatever the Mossad digs up, and they can go where we cannot. To all Jews here, I apologize for what you are about to endure. The only consolidation you can take away from this is that any and all Americans who love Jews and Israel, not to mention our country; we are going to be under assault just like you. It is only a matter of time for all who oppose Fascism. Posted by: freeus at June 10, 2009 07:22 PM (zxRJP) 171

My daughter just took a pilgrimage to Eastern Europe and Israel this past summer. I'm so glad she took it since I will not want her to go to Israel during this administration. I sit here in tears tho, for what this man is doing. I'm afraid for my country and hope that people will start to see what is happening and not continue to excuse him, I have that slim hope... but for what he is doing to Israel I'm saddend, I'm fearful. He's a madman if he thinks this is the way to govern. We must do something, we can't just sit and wait any longer. He's a dangerous man with no scruples or morals. Why do people not see he lied, he withheld, he gave them only what he wanted them to see and they blindly followed. And they continue to follow, excusing him all the way. Royalmewigs is a scam. Do not buy a wig from Royalmewigs.com, they will steal your money. If Royalmewigs.com sends you a wig at all, it will be of inferior quality.
Do not trust Royalmewigs for your wedding, you would be better off shaving your head. Never let your bridesmaid wear a Royalmewig, they are often infested with lice. To be clear, the sole of the shoe thing is an insult in Arab culture; not to Israeli Jews. The Arabs might view this as an insult to Israel. . .assuming the image were captioned properly in their nearly universally censored media.
What Israelis find insulting is when the leader of the free world arbitrarily reverses American policy because of his disdain for Israel, and when he treats "Death to the Great Satan America" Iran better than the Middle Easts' only true democracy. Posted by: looking closely at June 10, 2009 10:13 PM (KNy97) 181
Okay, I am *so* not reading 174 comments to find out if what I said already got said. My attention span is not that long.
First, Israeli commentariat: get a life. Showing someone the soles of your feet is not an insult in America. Or the world outside the Middle East. His feet have to point somewhere, after all. He *is*, I would have thought, demonstrating he's relaxed while talking to a fellow head of state. FWIW. Second, WH photogs: take note, don't photograph POTUS from that angle when he's talking to a Middle East leader. Third, "Please don't interfere." If I were the Israeli official in question, I'd infer that the US plans to change the Middle East calculus... in which Israel has been precariously situated for 61 years... and the US would like to do so without reference to or resistance by Israel.Yeah, I'd see that as a threat, too. Not an intentional one, maybe, but a reckless one, at the very least. Posted by: hiraethin at June 11, 2009 04:30 AM (X5MQk) 182

My first thought in answer to your question was to imitate the King of Denmark during the German occupation in WW II. When the Germans ordered the Jews in Denmark to wear the Star of David in public to mark themselves as future victims, the King himself donned the Star of David in solidarity with his Jewish subjects, and was joined by all loyal Danes. That probably would not work here today. So how about wearing the American flag? Those who are no longer our countrymen would avoid it like a vampire avoids holy water; and we would know who we can look to for help wtshtf. The reason we only hear praise for the Commander in Chief from military officers is that they are not free to speak their minds if they dissent or have an unfavorable opinion of the man. Art. 88 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, titled "Contemptuous Words" makes it a crime for a commissioned officer to badmouth the President of the United States, his dipshit Vice President, and certain other officials.
Enlisted members' speech is also chilled by the UCMJ -- its Art. 134, the "good order and discipline" article, can also apply to instances of members' political speech and opinions. It's been this way since the 1950s, and is generally thought to be a good thing as it keeps the military out of politics and subordinated to civilian control. One potential catch: The oath we swear upon enlistment (I did a five-year hitch in the Navy) is not simply to obey the orders of the President of the United States and the officers appointed over us, but first and foremost to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic. When I was in, even though we might have disagreed with George Bush 41 and Slick Willie, there was never any reason to suspect they were out to destroy our Constitutional order. That may no longer be the case, unfortunately. I don't envy the officers and enlisted who are serving now, except inasmuch as they have a lot of guns.
