Obama In Talks With Pacific Island of Palau to Take Uigher Gitmo Prisoners; Cost to You, the Taxpayer? A Mere Fifth of Billion Dollars

Two hundred million, that is, but everything in the Age of Obama is denominated in billions and trillions.

The Obama administration is in talks with the remote South Pacific island nation of Palau to resettle a group of Chinese Muslims now held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, The Associated Press has learned.

...

A federal judge ordered them released, but an appeals court halted the order, and they have been in legal limbo ever since. Thus far no country has agreed to take any of of the 17.

...

Palau, with a population of about 20,000, is an archipelago of eight main islands plus more than 250 islets that is best known for diving and tourism and is located some 500 miles (800 kilometers) east of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean.

...

Two of the officials said the U.S. was prepared to give Palau up to $200 million in development, budget support and other assistance in return for accepting the Uighurs.

The third official did not deny that a significant amount of money would be involved. But the official denied it would be a direct transfer to the Palau government.

Would not be a direct transfer. Oh, okay, it will be an indirect, disguised payment supposedly for other purposes, like a development grant. That makes so much difference to me. It's critically important to me that you call it something else. Because I'm a friggin' moron.

Wonderful. Everyone wins, right?

Thanks to AHFF Geoff.

Granted it's only equivalent to a Hollywood 3rd wife's alimony, but there are drug lord in Mexico who get by on less.

MSM STILL NOT COVERING

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. — A Muslim convert charged with fatally shooting an American soldier at a military recruiting center said Tuesday that he doesn't consider the killing a murder because U.S. military action in the Middle East made the killing justified.

"I do feel I'm not guilty," Abdulhakim Muhammad told The Associated Press in a collect call from the Pulaski County jail. "I don't think it was murder, because murder is when a person kills another person without justified reason."

Muhammad told the AP he admitted to his actions to police and said he was retaliating against the U.S. military.

"Yes, I did tell the police upon my arrest that this was an act of retaliation, and not a reaction on the soldiers personally," Muhammad said. He called it "a act, for the sake of God, for the sake of Allah, the Lord of all the world, and also a retaliation on U.S. military."

In the interview, Muhammad also disputed his lawyer's claim that he had been "radicalized" in a Yemeni prison and said fellow prisoners that some call terrorists were actually "very good Muslim brothers."

.....

"U.S. soldiers are killing innocent Muslim men and women. We believe that we have to strike back. We believe in eye for an eye. We don't believe in turning the other cheek," he said.

....

"Those claims ... are all lies," Muhammad said Tuesday. "That never happened in Yemen. The officials dealt with me in a gentle way."

It claims Beshier was first suspended and then fired by the county for wearing a khimar, or Muslim head scarf.

Some facts about Palau:

Population: 20,842  (which makes the payoff come out to $9596 per citizen)

Area: 177 square miles (less than 1/8 the size of Rhode Island).

GDP: $158 million in 2006.

The US signed a compact with Palau in 1994 which made us responsible for their defense for 50 years.  So presumably they don't even have a military (or if they do, I bet they are not the most fear-inspiring characters).  So I don't know how we can be assured these guys don't get away.

54 34

Actually, the Palaus were taken by the 1st Marine and 81st Infantry (Army) Divisions. The battle of Peleliu was one the bloodiest until Iwo Jima and Okinawa, with some TRULY horrendous fighting and casualties.

The Uighurs, if they're the same ones I've been reading about, are not THAT much of a threat and  were swept up more or less by accident (again, if they're the same one's I'm thinking of) and were NOT actually fighting against us. Their beef is with China and they were in Afghanistan prepping for attacks there. This does NOT make them good guys, however, and frankly $200 million is an absurd amount when we could just, oh, leave them where they are for NO extra money. This is pandering to the hard left, plain and simple, and I resent having to pay tax money to make sure that overgrown children are placated and coddled.

That would be the left, not the Uighurs...

Dear Mama,

Greetings from lovely Pulau.  Joining the Jihad in Afghanistan was the best decision I ever made.  Who knew that I would get to travel to beautiful tropical paradises not once, but twice!  My first stop, Club Gitmo was amazing!  I enjoyed 4 star quality accomodations:  tastefully appointed rooms, gourmet halal meals (I think I packed on 50 lbs), free cable (220 chanels for my viewing pleasure!), massages and facials by highly trained aestheticians (I finally was able to have all my manscaping issues taken care of--for free, and I didn't have to leave a tip!)  Remember those pesky ingrown toenails and foot fungus I suffered from?  They are a distant memory of the past as I now sport a fashionable French pedi!  I am taking some great online classes and should be able to sit for my bar exam in just a few months.  Who would have thought a small time goat herder from China could end up so successful?  You would be so proud of me.  I just got settled in my new waterfront condo in Pulau.  You would just love it.  The people here seem very friendly and I hope to return their kind hospitality as soon as I establish my litigation practice.  I hope you and Papa can come visit me soon (Obama willing) and see how I've bettered myself.  Please tell everyone I said "hello".  Praise be to Baraak!

81 You have to be drinking the Kool-Aid to not understand what is going on.  Look, as far as I understand, and please correct me if I am wrong, there was a International Committee or some such, which inspected Gitmo.  The results, as I understand them, Gitmo passed with extreme high marks.  This transfer, which will occur due to political purposes, with total disregard to international security, will be borne by American taxpayers.  I have but one question, how is the New Improved jail an improvement over Gitmo?  Specifically WHAT THE FUCK IS DIFFERENT to justify these FUCKING ABSURD COSTS?  WHERE IS THE FISCAL MANAGMENT?  To all the Political Correct police, I meant all of the above in a nice way.  Actually, no I DID NOT.  Fuck You with a razor tipped dildo.

84 >>Would not be a direct transfer. Oh, okay, it will be an indirect, disguised payment supposedly for other purposes, like a development grant. That makes so much difference to me. It's critically important to me that you call it something else.<<

That's pretty much taken from paragraph 32(a) of the Democrat handbook: "If you want to pass a law that the voters are likely to oppose, give it a totally irrelevant title.  Since most voters are morons, and almost no one actually *reads* the literal text of a bill, this works every time."

86 @81 how is the New Improved jail an improvement over Gitmo?

I could be wrong, but I don't think think they are going to jail... they are being "relocated"... I think that means set free.

88 For $200 million, couldn't we just buy the island and build a prison ? Makes good on Obama's promise to close Gitmo, provides work for the natives, and Chrysler can be the general contractor. Seems like a win to me.

90 I go to the story link above (understanding FOX would update the original in order to provide more current info) but I'm not seeing any mention of the $200 million offer to the island nation from the US.     Instead, the Fox link puts a "humanitarian gesture" slant (which usually is intended to mean no quid pro quo) on the Palau government ... WTF?

91 Why the fuck would we pay to resettle a bunch of jihadis who would then try to forcibly convert the locals? Why does the fuckin' moron in the WH want jihadis free to travel? Does he think no one is going to come to visit the Uighurs? Next thing Palau is going to be a hotbed of jihadism as Obama's fellow Muslims gather to plot against us and to kill the locals.

95 Accepting, for a moment, that these prisoners are terrorists; why would sending them to an island off the coast of Southeast Asia, where the largest concentration of Moslems in the world reside and where multiple terrorist groups run unchecked, be such a good idea!!! Are we to believe that an island that derives all of its income from collecting pretty shells has a supermax that will keep these guys secure?

Insane... Truly insane.

99 Simple math.  Palau has a population of about 21,000 and is tkaing in 17 bad guys.  Assuming that the population of the US is 350m, that is the equivalent of us accepting and turning loose into society 283,500 known terrorists.  Good luck Palau.
