David Letterman: Isn't It Funny That Bristol Palin Got "Knocked Up," Just Like I Knocked Up My Girlfriend?
Update: Audio of Palin's Response: "Pathetic"
Correction: The Palin Daughter in Question Was Willow

Correction: Commenters tell me that the daughter who accompanied Sarah Palin to the game -- and the one who Letterman would therefore be talking about -- is Willow Palin, not Bristol. Willow was born in 1995 and is therefore 13 or 14.

Question: Obama's older daughter is approaching that age. Can we expect similar knocked-up jokes for her?

Dan Riehl notes the "Chelsea Clinton Rule" seems to only apply to Chelsea Clinton. And Obama's kids, I'm certain.

I had this in the sidebar but it seems to be stirring a lot of anger.

I would note that Letterman, who is 94 years young, "knocked up" his long-term live-in girlfriend accidentally. And that he did not marry his babymama for six years or so since his kid -- technically a bastard during this period -- was born.

I don't really get it. Why is a 17 year old girl to be ridiculed for the same carelessness the 122 year old decrepit fossil David Letterman exhibited?

BTW, I really doubt that was the only time Letterman knocked someone up. I'm guessing this is the first time the woman in question refused an abortion.

He's not just a has-been. He's been a has-been for years. He's actually jumped the shark at being a has-been.

Response: Palin on John Ziegler's show. Audio included.

Wow, it's almost as if every time Sarah Palin makes a public appearance, Certain People contact their friends in the media and tell them to turn up the heat.

I will not be a bit surprised if Jon Stewart does a Palin 'joke' tonight on his stupid show.

I'd like to run a DNA test on that offspring. Or would that require a "carbon dating" test when sperm that old are involved? (I know Letterman isn't really that old, although he looks like it)

10 Is there any way to stop this ridicule?  The double standard is completely on display as is his bias.  Which isn't new to most of us morons.  But at some point normal people have got to say, "this shit ain't funny anymore".  Does David Letterman think it's still funny?  Do his producers?  Does his audience?  The joke just runs it's course...kinda like Brian Dennehy.

He was nice to her and the audience loved her. For Letterman to turn on her like this tells me he has a deep-seated self-hatred.

I hope it eats his guts to see Conan O'Brian getting the gig he lusted after his whole shitty life - hell even Jay Leno is better than you, Dave.

21 Who even cares about Letterman, anymore?

The guy stopped being funny sometime in the last few years of the previous millenium.  Except for the Joaquin Phoenix interview can you name a single thing he's done since 2001 that's merited our positive attention?

The only time you now hear about him is when he's pulling some bush-league bullshit, as he did with McCain during the election.

Bush-league, that's the exact correct phrase to use for Letterman.

Johnny Carson was a classy guy.  Jay Leno is nice, and Conan O'Brien seems decent and tries hard to be pleasant.

But Letterman?  He's a petty, bush-league douchebag.

25 The 'Chelsea Clinton rule' seemed to extend even through her college years. But if she had gotten knocked up at some point, I suspect the press would have found a way to bend the rule. They might have been gentler on her, treating it as a teaching moment but they still would have covered it. The Chelsea rule was easy for the press to follow because Chelsea was kind of boring.

Unfortunately for Bristol, she's attractive, interesting, and her mother is loathed by the media elite.

30 It seems apropos to share some thoughts I've been having about the difference between "nice" and "good".

It's been pointed out to me -- many times -- that I am not a particularly nice person. My interlocutor always seems to be a bit taken aback when I respond that I'm not particularly inclined to be nice. In fact, I consider "niceness" to be a character flaw rather than a virtue. Why?

I consider myself an ethical person, and often a kind one. But kindness and ethics don't imply "niceness". A "nice" person might give a toddler a Sharpie if the kid howls for it, but a truly kind person will refrain from giving the kid the indelible marker, knowing that the kid will undoubtedly scrawl on walls, their clothes, and themselves. "Nice" is not concerned with consequences; "kind" is. Kindness (and ethical behavior generally) implies discretion, judgement, and a calculation of cause and effect.

I'd bet that most Hollywood types consider themselves to be "nice" people (as do leftists in general). And yet they seem to be gushing fountains of bile disguised as humor when confronted with situations and people they find objectionable. "Niceness" demands that they serve up this bile with a laugh and a wink, but the ichor always bubbles underneath. (Do you think Letterman would have made the same crack about a pregnant teen black girl in the inner city of Baltimore or New York with the same tone?)

I am happy to leave "nice" to the glad-handing assholes of the Left. I am not nice. I may tell you that I want to punch you in your stupid sheep's face, or that I consider your mental functioning to be only marginally above that of a howler-monkey suffering from late-term syphilis. But you may be sure that if and when I say this, it will be said honestly, directly, and un-ironically -- not with a grin and a wink, but with a seriousness of purpose and thoughtfulness that will impress upon you the depth of my black hatred for every atom in your misbegotten corpus.

So, David Letterman, I say this to you: you are a sniveling little slime-coated turd. This is not a nice thing to say, I know. However, it is truthful. No one has said this to your face because they were trying to be nice, but a kind person would have told you long ago and perhaps given you the impetus to become a better person. But no one did, and so we are left with the middle-aged bile-filled husk that you are now.

31 OK, I'm sorry, but do any you for one minute think if there was a KNOWN video of Bristol or Track or any of the Palin's or even the Bush's snorting coke the media would be in ethical deliberations of airing such a video because the subjects did not know their coke whore-ness was being filmed? Or do you think the video owner would have gotten a pretty penny and the check was long cashed?

The media acted the same way about John Edwards KNOWN affair, embargoed it and yet they are STILL trying to get inside a 17 year old girls uterus for gawds sakes.

Reminds me of the GOP establishment that tried to shut down Reagan

WINNERS AND LOSERS: One of these people is about to lose his bid for president in the 1980 campaign. Guess which one? George Bush had cruised into New Hampshire after an overwhelming victory in Iowa. He was the guy to beat. Ronald Reagan? A has-been! Shortly before this photograph was taken at a GOP fund-raising dinner, Reagan had been told that his time for rebuttal had been limited in the last debate, which was to take place a few hours later. When the chairman of the debate tried to cut off Reagan's microphone, he grabbed it back, and exclaimed, I PAID FOR THIS MICROPHONE, MR. CHAIRMAN! There was a gasp in the auditorium as, collectively, the audience realized there was a lot of life left in the Gipper. It was the end of George Bush in 1980.

4)  Dave gets his genital ripped off in a horrible car accident

3)  Dave gets arrested for DWI and thrown in Riker's Island, where he is punked out immediately and brutally sodomized for 17 hours straight

2)  Todd Palin runs into Dave on the sidewalk and breaks every tooth out of Dave's head before publicly horse-whipping him in the street

78 and I'm thinking WTF? It's pretty much the opposite. I don't have the energy to deal with an idiot today, but I'd love to see someone else respond.

It would do no good. The weird thing about many of those bile-dripping lefties is that they know that what they're saying is untrue but -- in true Orwellian fashion -- they believe it anyway. They have built a mental model of the objects of their hate and if reality does not match this mental model, why, so much the worse for reality. (They carry this rather cavalier attitude to fact to many other areas of their lives as well.)

I find this obsessive hatred rather odd. It's almost never expressed as simple disagreement or even distaste, but rather as a kind of physical revulsion or personal rage. Hate is a personal emotion just as much as love is -- to truly hate someone requires a relationship, just as love does. A hated person looms large in the mind, just as a loved one does; perhaps even more so. The hated person becomes an obsession, a focus of mental energy that in a weird way provides mental nourishment: if the hated person were to leave that mental space, it would leave a vacuum behind. Just look at the shadow Nixon cast over an entire generation of liberals. Whatever the vices and virtues of the man himself, he occupied an immense territory in the minds of the people who hated him.

I simply cannot bring myself to hate in such a promiscuous fashion. Hating people you never met and probably never will meet, who don't know you even exist, is a  terrible waste of your own mental energy. It's an act of auto-cannibalism: your mind can only feed on itself.

Letterman is an asshole. And jokes about Willow getting knocked up are way out of line. I'm just glad he didn't say Piper because then I would've had to fly to NYC and throw rotten eggs at him.

That said, I have to confess that it is a refreshing change to see an older celebrity male with a sort of below average looking woman close to his age, instead of the usual ancient guy with hot 20 something chick.

The DC Republicans are simply the current minority wing of our ruling class.  And they need to be shown the door almost as much as the Democrats.

And that's why they're scared shitless of little ol' Sarah Palin from Wasilla, AK. She has to fight the dems with one hand and the inside-the-beltway GOP with the other.

Grassroots conservatives don't have to support Palin, but we should be absolutely done with 2 things:

1) Supporting Republicans who campaign as conservatives at home but govern as Dem-lite when they're in DC

2) Letting the MSM pick our candidate

Wow, can't hang the trophy-wife smear on Dave! I'd like to think she's a nice person, beauty only skin deep, etc. but since she's Dave Lettermans's wife, I'll make an exception. 93 One more thing: I've known a couple of professional stand-up comics (one pretty one, and one to say hello to), and both of them suffered from extreme depression at different points in their lives. Comics as diverse as W.C. Fields, Steve Martin, and Rodney Dangerfield have lamented the fact that the comic has no private persona: the jolly man in public is assumed to be jolly in private, to think no deep thoughts. Steve Martin has managed over the years to advance his more cerebral side: a musician, a writer, and a lover of art. But he's not known for these things, and his gravestone will probably read "Wild and Crazy Guy!". Robin Williams is another such: his manic "comedy" barely masks a festering, inchoate rage.

I suspect (though I do not know) that Letterman suffers from this syndrome, and probably more than most. It would explain why his "humor" has become so constrained and bitter as the years wear on -- here is a man that wishes he had made his mark doing something, anything, else.

It wouldn't change of the mind of the person who wrote it, but other people might not know about the charity work the Bush daughters have done, the arrest of Gore's son, etc.

I was just talking to a relative earlier today and heard a story about dealing with people who lie all the time. One can forget that such people can't be counted on to even tell you the correct day and time. Likewise, if you read something and no one refutes it, it may not occur to you that the exact opposite is true. You might think it's an exaggeration, sure, but I'm still suprised when people write that the sky is green and below us.

Top Five Reasons Dave Letterman Married An Ugly Woman:

#5: That's not his wife, it's his personality made flesh.

#4: Shows sympathy for gay marriage by wedding woman who looks like a man.

#2: She's sympathetic about Dave's erectile problems. She's also the cause, but Dave's too dumb to figure that out.

111 I've heard leftists say that they actually get energy from their hate -- that they feed on it.

There was a study done some years ago on what we would today call "celebrity-stalkers": people who followed celebrities around and tried to involve themselves in the celebrities' lives. Many of these people were amazed to find that the celebrity in question did not know them at all, did not even recognize their faces. These people had spent so much of their waking hours obsessing over the obejct of their affection that it seemed impossible that the attention was not reciprocated.

There's probably a larger political point to be made based on that, but I'd need to think about it before making one.

114 I've had a long-running case of Letterman nausea. In about 95-96, I went to a show taping of his here in London. For guests, he had on Jamie Lee Curtis and David Duchovny. Curtis and Mulder were great--interacted with the audience--warm and expressed a sense of being grateful that we the audience were there.

Letterman always has that cup of "coffee" on his desk during the show. It ain't coffee. And that cup is refilled a hundred times a night--when the camera is focused elsewhere on the stage. By the time the middle of the show (and thus time out for the commercial) arrived, Letterman was piss-trippingly drunk. He lurched over to the center of the stage, looked out and up at the audience, blocked his vision with his hand, muttered something only the first few rows could hear. They laughed, and then Letterman roared, "What the FUCK are you laughing at? This shit isn't funny!"

No. It wasn't. And the few other asides that he made during the breaks, and in general, simply the CONTEMPT that he oozed, left me unimpressed to this day.

To hear him go after Palin's daughter doesn't surprise me, but it still sickens me.

Just another example of the left's inordinate hatered of women; it's about time women took the blindfold off and realized it too, imho.  Goodness knows they've been letting the mantle drop a fair bit lately.

As for the man himself? Yawn.  I've watched parts of his show maybe a half dozen times in my entire life, and I think I might have gotten a chuckle two, maybe three times at most.  I'm a pretty easy person in the "makes me laugh" department -- not a good track record Dave.

135 forgive my rudeness at openly stating my own opinion.    the GOP elite's dislike and disdain for Sarah Palin stems directly from her political ideaology, Sarah is not a progressive, she bases her political philosophy on the idea's set forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and not on academic dogma spouted by collectivists for over a hundred years now.   she's still my gal as long as they hate her, they're hate for her only convinces me further   Democrat and Republican have become meaningless labels used to distract us from the fact that both parties continue marching us down the road to Facism.   Progressives always find a way to justify ever larger and more intrusive, controlling goverment, they always look to expand the power of the central government. liberal progressives couch their language in terms of  individual freedom, not freedom to do something, but freedom from something (hunger, unemployment) liberal progressives are more likely to actually call themselves progressives.    always be careful when they offer you freedom from something, they can only "free" you from it by limiting your choice to it.    conservative progressives always seem to have their hands tied "the good of the nation determines we must do such and such, i don't like it, but there is just no choice" the conservative progressive is often very hard to spot, one dead give away? almost to the person they will site Teddy Roosevelt as one of if not their favorite President.    both major Political Parties are controlled by the Progressives.    we must vote out ALL incumbents in Nov 2010, it is the only message they will understand.    oh and if you can't tell all ready, i would eat broken glass for Sarah Palin.

151      DAVID LETTERMAN'S HATE, etc. !

Speaking of anti-Semitism, it's Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who've gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
Wrong! It's the ancient Jewish prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that'll outdo even Hitler's by stating that "Judah hath dealt treacherously" and "the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this" and asks "Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?"
Haven't evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin's continuing "crucifixion"!
While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!

152 What if remarks had been made to Regina Letterman for living in sin with David for years.  Who would have thought she would stoop so low as to live with him out of wedlock after having her baby.  Poor  Harry will have to answer so many questions for his moma and daddy.  Please fire David Letterman as soon as possible.  CBS get him off the air  as our children should not have to tolerate such an ugly stupid old man by the name of David Letterman.  His jokes that he approves are just sick, and have been for months.  I hope he has to get on his knees to Sarah Palin.  Who does he think he is only half apologizing and still making ugly jokes.  Imus was fired .  Hurry and fire Letterman!!!  This man is out of control and gets by with it.  Who does it take to stop him?  He really thinks no one can.  Gail Rambo

153 Mr. Palin should be allowed to go on Letterman's lousy show and kick his ass in front of the 400,000 fools that watch his show.

Posted by: Bill at June 12, 2009 03:42 PM (jNzG2)

154 All these comedians like Letterman should make the playing field equal.  Why not make jokes of the Obama daughters and Michelle!  C'mon dirty old man Letterman, you can make a few laughs using those girls in your dirty jokes.

I agree David Letterman is an asshole. I will never watch him again.

He should bend over and kiss his ass goodbye. See you later Dave.

Guess he is proud to be a B.O. high paying tax payer. Good for him.

And republicans who use the media to take out their own should be thrown out. Out of office. Out of the party. Out of town.
