| The Road To Health Care SerfdomKeith Hennessey, Director of the National Economic Council under George W. Bush, has gone through the health care 'reform' bill drafted by Ted Kennedy and Chris Dodd. Yeah, it's as bad as you might fear. Lots of regulations? Check Increased demands for private information? Check New taxes? Check And the hits keep coming, Read the whole thing and weep. Remember when Obama savaged McCain for a plan to tax health benefits? Yeah, now that may not be such a bad idea after all. Hey, if a God doesn't have the right to change his mind, who amongst us does? Of course, McCain's plan came with an offsetting tax credit. Obama's? Not so much. The best hope we have for maintaining freedom in the health care market and avoid government control of another huge swath of the economy is the details of the plan. "Health care reform" is fairly popular in a generic, non-specific sense. When you start putting plans on the table and having to make hard choices support tends to fracture. Obama and the Democrats will try to make this a battle about 'saving the economy' (you have to spend money to save money or something) and about covering the millions of uninsured (a case which is often overstated to say the least). Republicans and conservatives need to make this about freedom of choice (something the Democrats claim to be in favor of in other circumstances) and the ability to keep their own doctor. Welcome to the Second Battle Of HillaryCare! AoS gets results!* Republicans begin push back.In a letter President Obama, key Senate Republicans say they're unwilling to support one of Obama's pillars for health-care reform: a public/government insurance program to compete against private plans. The letter was signed by all but one of the Republicans on the powerful Finance Committee, one of the panels writing the health-care bill. (The one Finance Republican who didn't sign: Olympia Snowe.) Citing the looming financial crisis for Medicare and Medicaid, the senators said that "creating a brand new government program will not only worsen our long term financial outlook but also negatively impact American families who enjoy the private coverage of their choice."Olympia Fucking Snowe. Who couldn't have seen that coming. *I keed, I keed. Comments1

Of all the things that scare me about this administration, nationalized healthcare frightens me the most. Let's hope that congress rejects much of these concepts laid out in the Kennedy proposal.

Trust me, Ted Kenndy's present illness would have, one way or another, treatment by the finest doctors money can buy. Now on the other hand, under govt. healthcare if YOU were to become stricken by what he has, in terms of prompt diagnosis, good treatment, comfortable hospitalization if needed...good luck, a likely nightmare. You don't need a smart blogger to do this. So once we have nationalized health care, where will the Canadians go for needed medical treatment?
I know a guy who is Canadian who had lived in the US for at least 15 years and had an American wife. He took a job in Canada and relocated the family to Hamilton Ontario. A few years after they were established in Canada (ie his entire family is under the government "free" health care), his wife had an appendicitis. They went to the nearest hospital and they couldn't see her. They went across town to another hospital that couldn't take her. They then went to a third hospital and they refused to take her too. They finally decided to cross the border into Buffalo where the first hospital they came across saw her immediately and performed an appendectomy. They paid a whole $1,300 on his credit card. The doctor told them she would have died if they had waited any longer. Because their search for a hospital that would take them not only included the driving time but a 2-3 hour wait at each hospital, they spent over 18 hours looking for a hospital while his wife was in excruciating pain. I have an even better story about Canadian "free" health care but this one was related to the question that was asked. Let me know if you want to hear it. 34: I believe you're thinking of "John Q" with Denzel Washington. Caught part of it on TV (enough to get the gist of things, not enough to care about them). Per my own experience, I had a brush with cancer (surgery, no rad/chemo) almost two years ago, and I had no insurance worth speaking of (mini-medical plan that maxed out after two doctor's visits and a couple tests). I ended up with close to $50,000 in bills, some of which I'm still paying. I'm also still in follow-up, which means more bills. But I would rather lose my house and car and declare bankruptcy than do it again under this plan. Posted by: Joanna at June 08, 2009 12:53 PM (orTXJ) 45
There are some things I want to hear addressed before any half-baked healthcare schemes get off the ground. Namely, what is the value of a human life? Does that value decrease as one gets older?
Free healtcare obviously does not mean there are no costs involved, and not even Obama will deny that. So how much is a 30 year old worth to taxpayers? A 60 year old? Is Ted Kennedy worth more than my grandfather? I'm talking dollar amounts here. With today's medical technology, unlimited amonunts of money could be spent keeping an individual "alive," so which bureacrat is in charge of determining when the costs of treating an individual outweigh the benifits to society? These are questions that must be answered before this moves any further forward. Posted by: Fortunate Son at June 08, 2009 12:55 PM (FaLC9) 46

Rush had a guest on that said (pardon the pun) that rushing into a healthcare plan like this is incredibly stupid and would never be done in the corporate world. Basically, he said that limited trials need to be done to see how the system works, then it should be tweaked, etc. That made sense to me, which of course means that the libtards will not even consider it.

Oh, that's pretty easy: 1. Sen. Kennedy is just a regular Joe the Plumber: he's dead, as the treatment options would not be "cost effective". 2. Sen. Kennedy is a wealthy individual, but not politically conncted: he packs his bags and flies to a country where he can buy decent care. Probably not as good an outcome, as most of the rest of the world aren't as talented as his Duke surgeons. 3. He is Sen. Kennedy: identical to what he got. @#40, That is a scary story that hits home. I spent a night in the hospital after an ER visit last week. The docs told me they caught the problem early enough that a night on IV antibiotics would probably take care of it, but that if untreated, could have turned quickly into a life threatening injury. My health insurance, which I pay for myself since I am self-employed, will cover it. Maybe not perfect, but trust me after a night in the hospital, I can tell you there is more than enough bueracracy in the medical system without adding the fog and incompetence of a government mandated system.

Simple question (really): Is Medicare cheap and does it work the way it's envisioned? Kind of. My Mom is currently on Medicare dealing with some really serious health problems. She pays out of pocket for a supplementary Medicare policy (around $120 a month) that she gets from Blue Cross. She also pays for Medicare Part D, which is prescription drug. I'm not sure how much Medicare is, it gets taken out of Mom's social security check. All of this being said, she has had minimal bills. Minimal. She can go to whatever doctor she wants, to whatever hospital she wants. We have had all procedures, tests and hospital visits covered. The hospital costs for things like tests are astronomical- that needs to be fixed. Everything that Medicare doesn't pick up, Blue Cross covers. I have heard from other people that have different policies that they are constantly getting billed for different things that aren't covered. My Mom has a good policy from Blue Cross. That is not the case for everyone. I have also been hearing about doctors who are no longer dealing with Medicare- not a good sign. Did this help? Let's hear your other story, Lemmi.
Ok, me and my wife get invited to wedding where we are sitting at a table with one of my wife's Canadian friends and her husband who coughs a lot and is missing a leg. The conversation starts heading in the direction of what is different between Canada and the US and naturally health care got brought up and she proceeded to tell us about how her husband lost his leg. Her husband slipped on some icy steps and broke his leg. They rushed him to the hospital and they couldn't see him that day so they gave him some pain killers and made an appointment for 3 days later (in case you don't know, a broken leg is a life threatening injury). He gets in to see the doctor and gets x-rayed and then they set the bone and put it in a cast but to save money they never x-rayed it after the bone was set. A few weeks later at his follow up visit he was complaining of extreme pain so they gave him some stronger pain killers. At his next check up the doctor actually did what doctors do and investigated the pain and found out that the bone wasn't set properly and gangrene had set in. The only option at this point was to amputate his leg. About 6 months later the guy gets extremely ill and goes back to the hospital to discover that they didn't get all of the infection when they amputated and it had spread to his kidneys and lungs (that's why he coughs all the time). He showed me all of the pills he has to take every day and explained that the treatments were only slowing the infection down and not actually getting rid of it. The doctors expect him to live 2-3 more years on the current treatments unless some better treatment comes around. The wife told us that the Canadian health plan has paid over $300,000 for his "treatments". Then she turned to us and said "I don't know how we would afford all of this if it wasn't for the Canadian health plan. If we lived in America there is no way we could afford all of his medical expenses". I had to leave the table to avoid strangling her right then and there. If the Republicans consistently refer to "health care reform" as the "health care rationing" that will result from the "reform", this lunacy can still be stopped.

Sassy, I feel the exact same way. As a matter of fact, the terrible night that we learned Obama won the election, I laid awake that night as my eyes welled up with tears fearing this very thing. At the very least, I thought his upcoming disastrous spending could be reeled in if people were smart enough to cut bloated "gimme" programs. But socialized healthcare scares the ever loving crap out of me. I am extremely, extremely worried about this. I pray something can stop this utter nightmare. We all know what it means and none of it is in the least bit good. Posted by: Twinks at June 08, 2009 01:47 PM (V+x9W) 88

And in spite of the botched treatments, your acquaintances are oh-so-grateful to their blessed Canadian universal health care plan. Makes them feel smugly superior to all you dog-eat-dog Americans as well. Sickening (pun intended). This is the rationed, inferior, required health care coming your way, guys. Don't let it happen. I think Medicare is partly to blame. DC sets their prices and that's what participating hospitals/physicians get, end of story. Whatever shortfall may arise is most likely passed on to those who have private comprehensive insurance. Is it too early to start getting hammered-ass drunk? About two years ago, my Mom fractured her hip. It was in the early evening. She went to the hospital, they x-rayed her, and the next morning, she had surgery. Less than 24 hours later, her hip was fixed. We went to a decent hospital, had the doctor of our choice, and she had no problems. If they had behaved properly in the first place, there would be no $300,00 health care bill, the guy would have his leg and would be healthy. IMHO, the people you were talking to were suckling at the teat of the government. If they had a better system, the guy wouldn't be disabled. I would rather pay for premiums and get good care than get f*cked by bad hospitals and doctors. And if they were in America, their who escapade would have never happened. You're a better, more controlled person than I. I would have stared at her, blinked a couple times and countered with my cancer story. The only reason I didn't have rad/chemo was because I went in for surgery within three weeks of my diagnosis. It would have been three days, but my doc let me wait until after my birthday. Of course there will be medical practices that don't want to deal with government insurance programs....look at Sotomayor's brother as one of those. (I won't go into the politics of that..other posters are likely to be more cohesive in their arguments). There's so much inefficiency in govt. run programs (name any one you'd like) it scares the daylights out of most people...we had an agency call up to schedule a doctor's appt. for my father, 6 months after they were informed that he passed away. Yep....tax payer dollars, hard at work. Thus far, the only change I believe in is in my piggybank,,,,which is experiencing more shrinkage than George Costanza.

Is Medicare cheap and does it work the way it's envisioned?
My understanding is that Medicare is totally ****ed up. The bureaucracy sets all the reimbursement rates, and if you've ever looked at a medicare beneficiary statement, you know the doctors and hospitals are really getting squeezed on a lot of their costs. I look at it and ask myself: they went to medical school for this paltry sum?? As a result, there is a tremendous amount of cost shifting by doctors and hospitals to non-medicare patients, which increases costs to the rest of us. On the other hand (to use a phrase that sort-of-God uses a lot), it appears that medicare is covering some things they shouldn't be covering (like those motorized scooters that all the elderly are running around in whether they need them or not), giving rise to fraud, waste and abuse. Complete misallocation of resources typical of government program. But it looks like here in Norte Venezuela the people have been promised "free" health care, and by "God" that's what they're going to get. Posted by: chris999 at June 08, 2009 02:00 PM (B/WwP) 104
If they had behaved properly in the first place, there would be no $300,00 health care bill, the guy would have his leg and would be healthy. And I mean that quite soberly. No exageration or hyperbole. In the US, had a hospital done that, that man would not only would not pay for his treatment, but would never have had to work again, nor would his widow or any surviving children ever have to work. Course, while the two 2nd mistakes are always possible given gross negligence and incompitence, it wouldn't have happened to begin with but the 1st mistake is simply absurd. No hospitals here ever turn you away or send you home for 3 days if you have a wood sliver or a hangnail. Posted by: Entropy at June 08, 2009 02:02 PM (m6c4H) 105

Does Obamacare frighten me? A little. But not half as much as Waxman/Markey's little carbon-rationing nonsense.
Why not? 'Cause what we've got now isn't working all that well unless you're a wage-slave at a big employer (or married to one.)
'Guaranteed issue' and 'modified community rating' might sound like the insurance industry's worst nightmare, but in the end they're going to be necessary, and the playing field's got to be leveled between big group plans and everyone else.
Letting Obamacare run its own insurance program is another issue and an altogether nastier one.

50 "OT. Has anybody else heard that the two reporters jailed by the Norks were probably abducted from the Chinese side of the border?" --I just heard on the news that the reporters have been sentenced to 12 years of hard labor. Since they were working for Al Gore's Current T.V. there is speculation that the Big Guy is going to N.Korea to negotiate their release. On topic, Medicare is a disaster. Doctors are reimbursed at a much lower rate than private insurance. There are a lot of doctors who currently do not participate with Medicare. I also find it just a complete disgrace that Torte Reform is not being included in this discussion of health care reform. Legislators would never want to bite the hand that feeds them, the ever powerful trial attorneys. Other countries that have socialized medicine in place do not have the litigation we have and their health care workers are paid markedly less than here. Nationalized health care in other countries is a disaster without the added burdens of lawsuits and labor unions. Republicans better man up, get some balls and fight tooth and nail against this debacle. I feel like this is the equivalent of Custer's last stand.

The core of any sensible health care financing reform needs to be a
1. High deductible universal catastrophic insurance program that everyone participates it. This makes health care portable between states, jobs, and individual coverage. Ideally, it would also include Medicaid. 2. Minimally, the deductible for such a plan should be set to something like AT LEAST twice the cost of a simple pregnancy and this barrier can't be changed by less than 3/4 majority. The purpose of having a high deductible core is to prevent the typical benefit creep that politicians want to tack onto typical insurance plans. 3. This core coverage would be relatively inexpensive for individuals or government/taxpayers to cover when compared to full feature insurance. 4. Having a strong universal catastrophic core would allow the marketplace to develop and offer all sorts of enhanced plans for various prices with additional benefits and deductibles much like today's market, with the big exception -- individual plans would cost about the same as employer plans because of the common catastrophic core. 5. Employers could offer employees a voucher to buy coverage in lue of employer based coverage. Employees could use the voucher to buy a plan in the marketplace that best suits their situation. It could be anything from a high deductible HSA to full coverage with all the bells and whistles. Posted by: drfredc at June 08, 2009 04:15 PM (ljMiA) 122
