| Smart Diplomacy: Suck Up To Our Enemies, Annoy Our FriendsI guess it depends on how you define the terms. A few vignettes from Team Obama's brand of diplomacy. First, Krauthammer on the US, Israel and everyone else.President Obama repeatedly insists that American foreign policy be conducted with modesty and humility. Above all, there will be no more "dictating" to other countries. We should "forge partnerships as opposed to simply dictating solutions," he told the G-20 summit. In Middle East negotiations, he told al-Arabiya, America will henceforth "start by listening, because all too often the United States starts by dictating." An admirable sentiment. It applies to everyone -- Iran, Russia, Cuba, Syria, even Venezuela. Except Israel. Israel is ordered to freeze all settlement activity. As Secretary of State Hillary Clinton imperiously explained the diktat: "a stop to settlements -- not some settlements, not outposts, not natural-growth exceptions."Next, Germany. A rift has quietly opened up between Germany and the United States, marked by official statements of harmony and private grumbling. It is not an outright crisis in relations, but there are underlying tensions and disagreements on matters ranging from the global economic crisis to the future of inmates held at Guantánamo Bay. On a more basic level, there is a sense that the Obama administration is ignoring the needs and counsel of longtime allies. ...But signs of discord were evident even last summer, when Mrs. Merkel rejected Mr. Obama’s request during the presidential campaign to speak in front of the Brandenburg Gate, saying it was not an appropriate location for a candidate’s address. Mr. Obama drew more than 200,000 people to hear his speech at a nearby monument. ...There is a sense in Germany, that the smooth Mr. Obama and the flashy President Nicolas Sarkozy of France have a better connection with each other than either does with the serious-minded Mrs. Merkel.Ah yes, the Obama/Sarkozy connection. Not so great as it turns out. The Obamas turn up in Paris this evening, but have declined a dinner invitation from the couple next door: the Sarkozys. President Obama’s reluctance to spend more than minimum time with the French leader on his visit for the D-Day anniversary has come as an embarrassment to the Elysée Palace. ...Mr Obama’s irritation with his French counterpart began when Mr Sarkozy tried to grab the limelight at the G20 summit in London in April and talked condescendingly of the US President in private. Mr Sarkozy told colleagues that he found Mr Obama to be inexperienced and unbriefed, especially on climate change. Mr Obama hit back last month, telling a visiting French minister: “Please tell Nicolas that I shall do my homework, and in two months I’ll know all about climate change.”Brave Carla Bruni has decided she's willing to risk being seen found wanting for beauty in comparison to Michelle. Obviously the Obama's decision not to dine with the Sarkozys is just out of concern for Carla and her ego. Remember when smooth relations with our 'friends' in Europe was supposedly so important? The fact that Bush couldn't pull that off was a sign of what an oaf he was. Ah yes, good times, good times. If Obama's problems with Merkel and Sarkozy really are personal, what's that say about his reputation for getting along with such difficult people? If he holds grudges against allies because of personal snubs, that doesn't sound like a 'world class temperament' does it? Besides, he doesn't seem to hold a grudge against Chavez for the book stunt or the Iranians for mocking his out reach efforts. Of course, it could be political differences. As America has lurched left, Europe is sliding to the right (yes, Merkel and Sarkozy pass for conservatives in Eurpoe, well sort of). Funny how that excuse was never offered to Bush. Besides, how does that explain his apparent lack of anger to the likes of Castro and Chavez? Oh yeah, those differences aren't as big as one might hope. Somewhere, Don Rumsfeld is laughing his evil ass off. Comments1

Speaking of that NY Times article on Obama's riff with Merkel, in four consecutive paragraphs,
the author, Nicholas Kulish, also talks about how much the German
people love Obama. He even quotes a man named Dietmar Herz to prove it: “Obama is so popular with the German people that you have a lot of comments like, ‘Why don’t we have a German Obama?’ Nice. Anyway, in another paragraph, Kulish also writes: There is a sense in Germany, that the smooth Mr. Obama and the flashy President Nicolas Sarkozy of France have a better connection with each other than either does with the serious-minded Mrs. Merkel. Really? No, I mean really? Because if that's true, then the German people have their head in the sand. According to the The Times Online article, Sarkozy and Obama have an incredibly cool relationship. No "connection" exists at all.Again, this just shows that even when the NY Times tries to be objective, they fail miserably. Posted by: Nick at June 05, 2009 12:00 PM (GJl/1) 44

Sorry, off topic but breaking news: WASHINGTON – Rep. John Murtha, D-Pa., steered millions of dollars in defense work to a campaign donor and the Pentagon went along with it, despite the fact that two convicted drug dealers had been deeply involved with the company. Records filed in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh starting in 2005 raise questions about whether the government ever checked into the background of William Kuchera of Windber, Pa., a Murtha constituent who has been doing government work for over 20 years. The records point to the political peril of Murtha and other members of Congress directing federal funds to particular contractors, an oft-criticized process known as earmarking that has added hundreds of billions of dollars to the defense budget in recent years. The companies owned by William Kuchera and his brother — Kuchera Defense Systems and Kuchera Industries Inc. — have received $53 million in federal contracts in this decade alone. According to the court records, Kuchera was convicted of marijuana distribution in 1982 in Wisconsin. In addition, a man who describes himself as an early partner in Kuchera's business in the 1980s is a convicted cocaine dealer who has served two terms in prison, according to the records. More good news: Obama has nominated 2 new NLRB member, Craig Becker and Mark Pearce. Becker is counsel to the SEIU and Pearce is a founding partner of a union-side law firm. If confirmed by the Senate, they will join longtime member and chairman Wilma Liebman (Clinton appointee) to " 'create a majority bloc distinctly in favor of expanding the rights of unions and workers...employers must...prepare for the resulting shifts in the regulatory landscape" ( McKenna Long and Aldridge LLP). ' " "Law firms are advising corporate clients to be on alert." Of course John Sweeney, president of the AFL-CIO is backing these guys. (WSJ, Melanie Trottman 6/3/9). posted by runningrn at June 05, 2009 11:53 AM (aC/SY)
Mr. Becker, counsel to the powerful Service Employees International Union, has argued that unionizing rights should cover more workers and wrote an article titled "Better Than a Strike: Protecting New Forms of Collective Work Stoppages under the National Labor Relations Act." Mr. Pearce is a founding partner of a union-side law firm, whose Web site says unions are "frequently" faced with employers who try to dissuade employees from exercising their right to unionize. He's not stupid
I have seen no evidence to support that. Have you got a link? We'd know if we got to see those undergraduate and post-graduate grades. In regards to Krauthammer's take, this is nothing more than the Left's mindset on domestic policy creeping into foreign policy. Remember how we were going to become a color-blind society? How we were suppose to pick epople on merits and not on race/sex/sexual orientation? How the playing field, tilted so long, was suppose to bemade level from now on? The Left evolved that into quotas, set-asides, etc. Now the playing field must be tilted in the other direction and there's no excuse to re-level the field (our best example now is SCOTUS Sotomayor and the Ricci case, which have funtastically become joined at the hip). So now our foreign policy has morphed in the style of our domestic policy. What should have become dictating to none and listening to all has instead become in the Left's mind listening to those who we supposedly never listened to, and dictating those who we supposedly never dictated to. The foreign playing field, like our domestic policy playing field, has tilted from one side to another instead of being level. Now I agree that we need to start listening more and dictating less. But at the same time dialog is not foreign policy itself but a means of achieving foreign polcy. And we shouldn't have to listen to those who talk at us through with knives, guns, IEDs and possibly soon, God help us, WMDs. Unfortunately, The One™ has decided to take his campaigning apology tour on the road, literally. Posted by: David in San Diego at June 05, 2009 12:06 PM (GF+6V) 54
ahahahahahahahaha! Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, said Thursday "beautiful speeches" cannot overcome Muslims' hatred of the United States. Khamenei spoke at a ceremony in Tehran marking the 20th anniversary of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomenei's death, The Washington Post reported. He delivered his speech, heard on television and by several thousand people at the ceremony, shortly before U.S. President Barack Obama spoke in Cairo on the U.S. relationship with Muslims. "People of the Middle East, the Muslim region and North Africa — people of these regions — hate America from the bottom of their heart," Khamenei said. "For a long time, these people have witnessed aggressive actions by America, and that's why they hate them." Obama said the United States and Muslim world need a "new beginning" but Khamenei said any change would take more than "beautiful speeches. Don't worry, we're all Muslims now! Another lack-luster foreign performance? What Barry O needs is a comedy gag to put some life back into the room. Maybe he can get Sasha Cohen to fly down out of the rafters for a quick butt-sniff.

Does anyone really think that France, Germany, UK, Australia, etc, have not assembled dossiers about Obama?
I think we can take it as a sure bet that China and Russia know more about Teleprompter than Worf does. A few phone calls from Putie to his old comrade Billy Boy Ayers for starters. Posted by: kbdabear at June 05, 2009 03:06 PM (93F13) 85

Why Obama has secured America's greatness! Thorugh clever diplomacy he has secured pledges from the Russians and Chinese to stop spying, the Islamics will stop terrorism, and the Tooth Fairey will not release the photos of Lt Worf and Helen Thomas.

Thank GOD for Obama!!!!!!!!
In 5 months he saved the banking and credit markets from going under (most people would have wanted them to fail and cause a depression....rich white people), rescued GM and Chrysler (otherwise both companies would have been liquidated), has made America the beacon of truth and morality again, appointed the first black Attorney General, nominated the first Hispanic to the Supreme court, he has ramped up the fight in Afghanistan, which should have happened all along, has gotten billions in more aid for Afghanistan (through NATO), he helped pass the consumer protection from credit cards (BIG THANKS ON THAT ONE), expanded health care to all children who have none, and will close Gitmo (Americas black eye) within the year. This has to be the greatest 5 months of leadership since FDR!!!!!!!!!11 2 wars Financial ruin No allies hatred against America brewing in all corners of the world All before he came into office YES WE CAN, YES WE WILL, AND YES WE DID Posted by: Tristan at June 06, 2009 03:01 AM (sQ/IP) 88
