Brian Williams Bows To Obama?

Bow, nod, whatever. 4 months into this abomination of an administration and nothing surprises me anymore.

I'm just glad it wasn't Matthews or Olbermann, it would have been x-rated.

12 I've been known to do that too (not to the Party in Question, but this is an etiquette question). It's Old School. To the max.

You did NOT shake hands with George Washington. Look it up. That little inclination of the head was the gesture of choice for the entire 18th century, and well into the modern era. It's not a bow. You can see a bow in John Adams. On the other hand, people owned slaves back then, brushed their teeth with a tree root, whipped their horses, and so on.

18 I don't see much here.  I do that a lot to people I respect and it is kind of a Buddist thing.

But the press is not supposed to go out of their way to show "respect" for such a powerful political leader.  They are actually supposed to hassle him a bit and make him explain himself at every turn.  I agree with you that I sometimes do a little mini-bow like that when I shake hands with someone whom I respect (like maybe an old WWII or Korea vet).  But I do it precisely because I wish to show my deference to them.  Which they should not be doing.

Williams should be extremely scrupulous about not showing deference to Obama like this.  What I wonder is if he just doesn't realize he's doing it or if he just doesn't care about impartiality.

Of course the bow in and of itself is not the problem.  It is just another symptom of the media's adoration of Obama.

Posted by: dan-O at June 03, 2009 11:37 AM (teb/C)

19

Yeah, that's way past a head-nod. That's a bow. Not a full on Obama-to-Saud bow, but still a bow.

Speaking of, did Obama bow this time around when he saw the king?

20 You know I work for GE right?  I'm a company man first.  A little bow here and there to protect the bottom line never hurt anyone.

37

OK. I read a story on the presidential bowing this weekend. People bowed to Washington and Adams. Those two bowed back. It was Jefferson who changed the Presidential approach and started the tradition of shaking hands. It was revolutionary. Aristocrats and foreign ambassadors were floored by this approach. Jefferson shook the hand of everyone and by doing this, he demonstrated that everyone who approached him would be recognized and treated as an equal.

So basically, Obama is throwing away 200 plus years of egalitarian tradition in order to have his ego stroked? I don't ever recall any of this MSM bowing to George Bush. Who's brilliant idea is this?

This press corps wouldn't even stand when Bush entered the briefing room, let alone bow to him.

This is a whole new level of bias.  The term "bias" doesn't even cover it.  This is subservience.  Swaths of the mainstream media are serving as tools of the Obama administration, not Fourth Estate watchdogs.

Obama does a head nod; Williams does an informal bow moving his shoulders; Obama did a full, formal bow to the Saudi king. Are you really this naive and stupid or is it some kind of take on liberal stupidity and double standards?

I vote for "he really is an imbecile".  No sentient being could force himself to argue that there is nothing wrong with a member of the American press bowing to an American President.  And, let's be honest here, our little unemployable teenaged twit PS isn't bright enough to convincingly argue that water is wet, so this attempt is doubly painful.

Remember, Jeff Gannon was crucified because he wasn't an anti-American Democrat cheerleader like that sack of ugly Helen Thomas.  In the way, way back days of two or three years ago, there was nothing more offensive to liberals than a reporter who wasn't willing to call the President's mother a bitch at every opportunity.

What a difference a coronation makes.

Posted by: VJay at June 03, 2009 01:25 PM (gQ+XA)

100 I really don't find his gesture by itself offensive.  I do it occasionally myself, especially when interacting with someone from a culture where it's more common.

Now, they were promoting the big follow-around on NBC last night, had an interview with Brian Williams and showed a clip of him in the limo with Obama.  Now THAT was a bit gross, watching him chicken-head everything the President said.  He couldn't even let Obama finish sentences without saying sh*t like "Yeah", "Uh huh", "O totally dude you are soo right and... oops I'm sorry I didn't mean to put my hand there I got jostled when we hit that pothole".  Of course the newsies had to mention how (awesome it was that) Obama had his feet up and his tie loosened (or something like that).

Posted by: whatever at June 03, 2009 01:25 PM (XIXhw)

101 Clearly there is a handshakes and then a bow, is the president single handedly working on bringing back the bow as a formal greeting again? This might seem like a small thing.. so what its just a bow? But its far more then that, we see a member of the media who is supose to serve in his role as member of the fourth estate to keep in check the political ambitions of those in power continuously shilling for the executive branch. Why is everything Obama says just taken as face value without an ounce of skepticism by the media? No one seems to want to ask what the methodology is for measuring jobs saved or created. Not a single raised eyebrow as the government picks winners in a bad economy and renegotiates contracts written between private companies and individuals. I just wonder when they will finally do away with the pretenses and refer to Obama as King Obama I.

Lol, I thought about making a similar joke.  I just think it's not too big a deal by itself, and at least the other part I saw (in the limo) was way "worse" to me.  Now, taken as a whole I guess you could make the argument that it's further evidence, but it's no proof in itself, and not even damning to me.  Although the bow is a bit robotic.  I don't know, I guess we'd have to see how he bids adieu to other leaders.

Again let me just be clear, I think BW is a tool, but more as evidenced by his interview on the news last night in promoting this, and the limo scene.  If you want to be ill watch that. I just wouldn't focus on this ("OMFG, have you read the wing nuts, they're going batshit because Brian Williams nodded his head to the President!!!!312)

128 No there there, so far as I can see.

This just looks like an affectation. Hell, I've done the same thing myself on occasion. If others start doing it, I'd get worried, but a one-off incident is hardly anything to get worked up over.

Obama's bow to the Saudi King was patently over-the-top. Elevating this little nothing to the President's obvious act of obeisance is a waste of time, IMO.

I thought it was you lefties who always said that the media is democracy's watchdog but they aren't using that interviewing style to anyone in Obama's administration, in fact, they are doing the exact opposite as seen with Williams' extended interview with Obama and in the bowing clip.

What are you, some kinda retard savant? I thought you understood the premise of the post and thread. But yeah, my understanding of the establishment of the policy of "freedom of the press" is that they should be critical of politicians and not carry their water.
The biggest violators of this concept are the MSM, esp the news networks, IMHO. The dipshits at CNN, Fox, MSN and AM radio usually fuck the story to promote their own "brand".It seems obvious to me and most anyone who hasn't handed their brain over to some preacher, politician, corporation or school teacher.

145 I heard clips of the interview on Medved's show and, if you can believe it, the bow was less offensive than most of what I heard.  What really really bothers me about Obastard is this stupidity about him going out for burgers.  First of all, shouldn't he be sending out some fucking underling to be doing that?  I mean he campaigned forever for this fucking job and it would be nice as an executive if he could send somebody to track down some fucking eats so that he might be working on matters important to the country.  Also doesn't the White House have a bunch of people around to cook for Barry Dunham and anybody else that happens to be there?  It's extremely obvious to me that this cocksucker has never worked a fucking day in his life and is just in it to fuck off on everybody else's dime.  We're so fucked.
