More Polls...Americans Not As Eager To Shut Gitmo As We've Been Led To Believe

In fact, they seem pretty dead set against it. Who knew?

Americans are overwhelmingly opposed to closing the detention center for suspected terrorists at Guantanamo Bay and moving some of the detainees to prisons on U.S. soil, a USA TODAY/Gallup Poll finds.

By more than 2-1, those surveyed say Guantanamo shouldn't be closed. By more than 3-1, they oppose moving some of the accused terrorists housed there to prisons in their own states.

The findings underscore the difficult task President Obama faces in convincing those at home that he should follow through on his campaign promise to close the prison in Cuba, especially in the absence of a plan of where the prisoners would go.

In many parts of the world, however, Gitmo has become a symbol of U.S. arrogance and abuse, and Obama has cited its closure as a way to lay the foundation for better relations. He is scheduled to deliver a major address aimed at the Muslim world on Thursday from Cairo.

Here's my pet peeve....how exactly did Gitmo " become a symbol of U.S. arrogance and abuse"? Maybe it had something to do with all the screeching from people on the left like Obama, Andrew Sullivan and the rest. Gitmo wasn't self-discrediting, it took the work of people opposed to the US taking strong measures to defend itself in the wake of 9/11.

The newest lefty talking point is the General Petraeus wants to close Gitmo and said that we have violated the Geneva Conventions in some unspecified way.

Andy McCarthy takes a look at the General's statements and walks through why there's not much there there.

4 I credit Cheney - his clear, succinct explanations of the importance of Gitmo have resulted in folks questioning the logic behind Obama's insane desire to close Gitmo and relocate the prisoners. He should try and ram it through, it will be political suicide, even the Dem senators are nervous about this (they probably got an earful from their constituents).

7 I can't believe either Obama or the dems were ever serious about closing Gitmo.  Even they can see the next step in the process is housing terrorists on US soil and that's so obviously politically radioactive they'd never dream it.  We'll get a few "we tried" bills that never make it to a vote, Obama will says he looked at it and then let it drop.

At Guantanamo Bay we're confined to our quarters,
We're scratching and sweating, we're waiting for orders,
We're watching the harbor, we're counting the wrecks,
And we're wondering which we'll be shipping on nex'.

At Guantanamo Bay, call her Gitmo for short,
Not much of a base, much less of a port,
One look at the docks, and you know that you're seein'
The goddamnedest hole in the whole
Caribbean.

So, hurrah for old Gitmo on Cuba's fair shore,
The home of the cockroach, the flea and the whore,
We'll sing of her praises and pray for the day
We'll get the hello out of Guantanamo Bay.

Here you pay twenty cents for a bottle of beer,
They call it Hatuey, and it tastes mighty queer,
There's the Indian Chief on the label to show,
The Indian sign makes you go, go, go, go.

And the U.S.S. Alaska comes steaming in view
To scrape off her bottom and pick up a crew,
But nary a seaman was fit for the sea,
They'd all been on leave, and they all had VD.

I'm actually in favor of closing Gitmo...And sending those coddled muzzie loons to be cared for by those gentle folk who work at Russian military prisons in Siberia.  Nothing like some bracing cold weather!

And Geneva Conventions?  last time I checked, those captured without uniforms could be shot.  Might as well do it.  What could the Left complain about?  We was just following the rulz and they wouldn't have to feel guilty about prisoners in Cuba.  Everyone wins.

Here's what I'd like Obama to do:

1) Close Gitmo. It's purely symbolic, but if it earns him political capital with some other country that he can cash in later, great.

2) Open another detention facility in the Northern Mariana Islands. New location, everything else exactly the same.

3) Don't tell anyone, for crying out loud.

Call it the FireHorse Plan. If you never hear about it, all the better.

That's because the outrage over gitmo was phony to begin with. It was created by an alliance of Bush haters in America, international leftitst that love seeing us fall on our faces, and anti-american muslims that pretend to be offended by everything to intimidate people into caving to their demands. Now that we have a socialist with a (D) behind his name in the WH, the outrage is gone. I really wish people in this country would consider who is outraged before we start letting their disingenuous screeching dictate who we elect.  None of these people ever gave a rat's ass about gitmo. They just wanted to pound the drum long enough and loud enough to get their allies in the msm to turn it into an issue that could be used to persuade the masses of uninformed dolts in our society to vote for Obama. And it fucking worked.

I don't think the majority of the American public was ever passionately invested in closing Gitmo -- the "horror of it all" was/is a media creation, much like our President.

The thing that woke people up was having to consider the reality of the alternative -- murderous, dedicated jihadists housed, and possibly freed, on US soil. I guess we can thank Obama's bumbling for that.

Another interesting poll:

As he marks his 100th day in office, President Barack Obama has enjoyed substantially more positive media coverage than either Bill Clinton or George Bush during their first months in the White House, according to a new study of press coverage.

Overall, roughly four out of ten stories, editorials and op ed columns about Obama have been clearly positive in tone, compared with 22% for Bush and 27% for Clinton in the same mix of seven national media outlets during the same first two months in office, according to a study by the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism.

The study found positive stories about Obama have outweighed negative by two-to-one (42% vs. 20%) while 38% of stories have been neutral or mixed.

84 @ 28 "Thank g-d we got Saddam's WMD's before he had a chance to attack us again."

Good point.  There was certainly no reason to think Saddam could ever be connected with an attack on the World Trade Center.  Except for, you know, having been behind the 1993 attack.
